Graphs provide interesting ways to generate families of lattice polytopes. In particular, one can use matrices encoding the information of a finite graph to define vertices of a polytope. This dissertation initiates the study of the Laplacian simplex, PG, obtained from a finite graph G by taking the convex hull of the columns of the Laplacian matrix for G. The Laplacian simplex is extended through the use of a parallel construction with a finite digraph D to obtain the Laplacian polytope, PD. We consider the problem of maximizing the second smallest eigenvalue of the weighted Laplacian of a (simple) graph over all nonnegative edge weightings with bounded total weight. This thesis studies collinearity graphs and commuting involution graphs associated with sporadic group geometries, and the conjugacy classes of semisimple elements in the exceptional Lie-type group E8(2).First we construct plane-line collinearity graphs for the sporadic simple groups and their associated minimal and maximal 2-local parabolic geometries. Our aim is to calculate some graphs associated with two of the larger sporadicsimple groups, Fi₂₄ and the Baby Monster. Firstly we calculate the point line collinearity graph for a maximal 2-local geometry of Fi₂₄. Grape root borer, Vitacea polistiformis (Harris), is an oligophagous pest of grapevines in the eastern USA. Neonates must burrow into the soil to find grape roots. In Virginia, larvae feed on roots for ~2 years, then pupate just beneath the soil surface. Emerging adults leave an empty pupal exuviae at the soil surface around the vine base. I give a complete characterization of the C*-correspondences associated to directed graphs as well as results about obstructions to a similar characterization of these objects for generalizations of directed graphs. Viewing the higher-dimensional analogues of directed graphs through the lens of product systems, I give a rigorous proof that topological k-graphs are essentially product systems over N^k of topological graphs.
