This paper draws attention to the interests of the victim in the criminal justice system in relation to the use of charge bargaining and the sentence discount in UK law. The paper argues that debate in this area tends to assume that these practices, particularly use of the graded sentence discount, are in harmony with the needs of crime control and with the interests of victims, but that they may infringe due process rights. Debate tends to concentrate on the due process implications of such practices, while the ready association of victims' interests with those of crime control tends to precl

Abstract:
This chapter details how Hissène Habré’s victims themselves had started their own process of documentation in prisons. Souleymane Guengueng had been detained and tortured by the Documentation and Security Directorate (DDS). While imprisoned, he began quietly documenting the torture and death of his fellow prisoners in order to build a dossier for later prosecution. Guengueng then discusses how he emerged from Habré's jails to organize a victim movement—the Association for Victims of Crimes and Political Repression in Chad (AVCRP)—that ultimately led to the conviction of his jailor. Indeed, he later became a representative of Chadian victims. Guengueng was aided in the pursuit of justice by Reed Brody of Human Rights Watch (HRW). Brody was the public face of the Habré trial in the Anglophone world. Working with Chadian victims' groups, Brody used the power of HRW's international brand to galvanize international awareness of Habré's victims.

Abstract:
This chapter assesses the ongoing battle to deliver victims’ reparations. Arguably, reparation was always important to victims of Hissène Habré. Nevertheless, it did not have a central place in the advocacy and efforts during the years leading to his trial by the Extraordinary African Chambers (EAC). The Statute of the EAC refers to the chambers' ability to award reparations and provides that reparations can be awarded to victims ‘individually or collectively, whether they have participated or not in the proceedings before the EAC’. By the end of 2015, with the hearings in the case coming to an end, there was still no clarity as to how victims who had not participated in the case would be able to access reparation, what link they would need to show to Habré's crimes, nor what the reparations phase of the case would look like. In addition, victims' associations, which had been working tirelessly to bring Habré to justice, only had partial data on the thousands of victims they represented. There had been no systematic record of the specific harm suffered by each victim. The chapter then argues that the same efforts and dedication that led to the successful conviction of Hissène Habré should be applied to ensuring that Habré's victims receive reparation.

This chapter details the context, content, and effects of the Face to Face programme in furthering the development of the Prison Radio Association (PRA), and argues that the case demonstrates the potential of prison radio to promote, facilitate, and inform restorative justice practice. First, the chapter examines the restorative justice theme within the contemporary political context before turning to the programme itself, the wider reception, and its impact and significance for the PRA. Through discussion of the increasingly victim-centred reporting of crime within mainstream media, the chapter shows that prison radio not only provides a voice for prisoners, but is able to empower victims of crime.

Abstract:
This chapter considers the flipside of globalization and economic progress in Miami—urban crime. Crime is not homogeneous; there are several distinct types, each with its own etiology and consequences. Homicide, for example, is related to but emerges from causal configurations different from those leading to property theft or money laundering. The chapter reviews leading theories of urban crime in order to develop a framework to fit empirical findings. It highlights the fact that not all urban crime occurs at street level or involves personal victims. It indicates the physical association between different forms of crime and locations in urban space. It shows that wealthier areas of town are not crime-free. They are sites for different forms of crime—more complex, apparently “victimless,” but at times more insidious than the street varieties.

Abstract:
Although male trafficking constitutes a considerable part of the human trafficking flow, men are rarely identified as victims. Victims of labor-related trafficking, mainly men, are being overlooked. The same happens with the marginal but not negligible percentage of male victims of sexual exploitation. Identification is crucial to promptly assist, support, and protect victims of trafficking. The overall objective of this chapter is to identify the causes and consequences of the invisibility of male victims of human trafficking. It aims to show the association of human trafficking with female non-citizens being trafficked for prostitution, combined with a securitarian approach to migration control, interferes with efforts to identify and protect all victims of human trafficking. As a result, male victims of human trafficking are prevented from accessing justice, thus rendering the transposition and implementation of the Palermo Protocol and the Anti-Trafficking Directive contradictory and ineffective.

There are few studies about the association between bullying, cyberbullying, eating psychopathology in clinical populations. This study aims to 1) analyze whether people with eating disorders were victims of bullying and cyberbullying, 2) explore whether bullying and cyberbullying were associated with eating disorders, psychopathology and coping strategies, and 3) analyze whether being a victim of bullying was a predictor of cyberbullying. Thirty-four participants with eating disorders filled out the questionnaires: EAT-26, DERS, EBIP-Q, ECIPQ, MBSRQ, BRIEF-COPE. Results showed that 100% of the patients had experienced both bullying and cyberbullying. Furthermore, bullying and cyberbullying were not associated with body satisfaction, eating attitudes, emotion deregulation, or coping strategies; however, a trend was found between cyberbullying, body satisfaction, and emotion deregulation. Finally, the authors found that having experienced bullying was a predictor of cyberbullying. The assessment and treatment of bullying and cyberbullying in eating disorders is necessary.

Numerous cases of sexual harassment in French higher education institutions led to the creation in 2002 of a student association dedicated to anti-sexist action against sexual harassment in higher education (Collectif de Lutte Anti-Sexiste Contre le Harcèlement Sexuel dans l’Enseignement Supérieur, also known as CLASCHES). More recently, the French minister for higher education introduced a policy requiring universities to take steps to eradicate sexual harassment and commissioned a survey of violence and gender relations in universities. Focusing on one of the universities where the survey was conducted, this chapter presents key findings from the survey and discusses the university’s responses. Although the university governing body set up a Victim Support Unit and organized activities annually to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, it has not used the survey to develop a specific policy but has, in fact, tried to obscure the results. Students criticize the university’s governing body’s discourses for blaming victims and making perpetrators invisible.

Criminal organizations have opened up to profound global transformations, putting themselves on the financial markets and creating a network in Mafia style. The present contribution intends to offer a framework of transnational criminal organizations, starting from defining aspects, normative forecasts and peculiarities, and then describing the Italian mafias and those of Eastern Europe, China, and Nigeria. Through these analyses the author intends to demonstrate how although Italy is the only country to have introduced “the Mafia Criminal Association” ex Art. 416 bis of the Penal Code, other countries also know this phenomenon. China, Russia, sub-Saharan Africa have given rise to mafia-style criminal organizations, even though they have not legally defined them. Today the branching of these associations at transnational level brings out their mafia values and the need to intervene with the legal and investigative methodology that was first experimented in Italy.

Digital data production increases on a daily basis due to the widespreaduse of Internet and interconnected computing devices. Actingsecurity mechanisms may result in several types of information,if processed and correlated, since their output logs range from IPaddresses/regions to attack events. Hence, the application of datascience techniques is essential to extract knowledge and insightsfrom this massive amount of data. In this article, we present a platformfor cybersecurity data visualization in an effort to identifytrends, associations and patterns, which enable better data-drivendecisions

Presentations at a meeting held in New Delhi in September 2003 highlighted findings from recent studies
