Hinderaker, Amorette Nicole. "Leaving the Family: Exit from Totalistic Organizations." Diss., North Dakota State University, 2013. https://hdl.handle.net/10365/27138.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore how members exit totalistic organizations. Existing organizational communication research has treated employee membership in an employment institution as the universal organizational relationship. This study argues that certain organizational relationships are best understood not by the presence or absence of pay, however, but in relation to the extent of organizational reach into the member's life outside the organization. This study advances the notion that such totalistic organizations share important characteristics including value-based memberships, centrality of organizational values to the member's life, the involvement of primary relationships, and a requirement of organizational fealty. This study advances the study of organizational exit within this totalistic context. A microstoria narrative analysis was used to examine the exit narratives of members of both paid and unpaid totalistic organizations (police officers and firefighters: N = 50, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: N = 50) to gain a better understanding of exit from totalistic organizations. The findings of this study suggest several contributions to the study of organizational communication and exit. First, the findings of this study expand our definition of organizational memberships beyond current literature, which defines memberships based on payment. Second, consideration of totalistic exit challenges existing models of role/vocational socialization, suggesting that foundational values can originate from an organizational source. Third, the process of exit revealed by the narratives of this study suggests a view of exit that was unlike both current phasic models or considerations of volunteer exit. The process of exiting a totalistic organization was less linear and more prolonged than exit describe by existing literature, and was marked by deep personal doubts and fears. Finally, members of totalistic organizations described active concealment of both their decisions to exit, and the doubts about both the organization and the self that contribute to exit, suggesting a communicative pattern during the exit process that diverges from the expected announcement/exit phase of Jablin's (2001) model.

Hunt, Alfred Ian. "Mutual enlightenment in early Vancouver, 1886-1916." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/27664.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the social and intellectual history of an apparently disparate group of voluntary associations and their members in Vancouver, British Columbia, 1886-1916. These associations sought to educate their own members, and often the general community, in the arts, in history, in science, in public affairs, and in matters of physical, vocational, and moral welfare. Vancouver's Art, Historical and Scientific Association, its natural history and literary societies, and its YMCA are central to the discussion. These associations' educational practices embodied a form of "intentional mutual enlightenment." The term refers to the non-formal education of adults through voluntary associations. Primarily through social, economic, intellectual, and political inferences from historical evidence, the thesis explains the meaning that "mutual enlightenment" had for participants. It pays attention to the contexts of late Victorian and Edwardian intellectual thought, and of British Columbia social and economic development. The thesis describes and explains both the reasons—stated and structural—for participants' involvement, and the social, political, and economic functions of the mutual enlightenment associations. To get at those reasons, the study examines interrelationships between ideas and their social circumstances, and how these inter-relationships gave rise to mutual enlightenment. Further, it examines mutual enlightenment (1) through an analysis of ten exemplar voluntary associations, (2) through a study of the ambient social structure and its reflection of and support for mutual enlightenment associations, and (3) through a conceptually satisfying definition of "intentional mutual enlightenment." The argument is this: the context largely determined, and now explains the nature of mutual enlightenment. Vancouver's social, political, and economic arrangements, and its residents' ideas, manners, tastes, and values accounted for the objectives, programmes, and membership of mutual enlightenment associations. Vancouver's intellectual climate and cultural forms had been imported primarily by middle-class residents from their original homes and homelands, mainly from Great Britain, or from Britain as modified through Central and Eastern Canadian experience.

Alexander, William Lee 1963. "Voluntary associations of and for the homeless in Tucson." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/277193.

Full text
Abstract:
An overview is presented of anthropology's interest in voluntary association, from the classical influences and studies to sociological and anthropological work that illustrate recent trends from the last decade. Information is presented from the author's fieldwork with the Tucson Homeless Union and the Southern Arizona Coalition for the Homeless that describes the homeless situation in Tucson and the efforts of these groups, whose members share a dedication to improving conditions for socioeconomically marginal people through activist means of protest and civil disobedience. Marked by fluidity of membership and unique internal dynamics, these groups present a special case-study of voluntary associations as a means of urban adaptation through self-help and as a vehicle for social change. It is demonstrated how and examination of the values expressed by the existence and actions of these associations is useful in understanding the nature of society and the stability of the political system.

Cheng, Jing. "Humiliation, pride and identity in the digital age : unpacking Chinese online nationalism." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2018. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/50486/.

Full text
Abstract:
Nationalism has been an important issue for China in both domestic politics and international relations. In the Post-Tiananmen Era, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) turned to nationalism as an ideological instrument to bolster the faith of the Chinese people and legitimise the Party’s rule. Meanwhile, the early 1990s also witnessed rapid developments in information and communications technologies (ICTs) in China, which have catalysed the emergence of online nationalism. Much of the existing literature focuses on either the external impact of Chinese nationalism on foreign policy or highlights the rise of popular nationalism as an independent force that makes the state fragile. There is, however, insufficient attention paid to the internal construct of Chinese nationalism. In the digital age, it also becomes increasingly evident that contemporary Chinese nationalism cannot be properly understood without reference to the role of digital communication. This thesis analyses the politics of Chinese nationalism through the lens of digital communicative practices. This offers an original and nuanced understanding of the political and social dynamics in contemporary China. The thesis focuses on two dimensions. First, it highlights the link between official nationalism and popular nationalism, revealing the changing dynamics within the construction of Chinese nationalism. Second, it focuses on Chinese online nationalism, illuminating the relationship between nationalism and technology. The thesis presents the first major work in examining both top-down construction and popular reception in Chinese nationalism studies from an ethnosymbolic approach. It highlights that the theoretical framework of ethno-symbolism is helpful in providing a more situated, nuanced understanding from a historical and cultural dimension. This thesis considers the (re)construction of China’s national myths of the Second Sino-Japanese War and examines the construction of national humiliation and national pride in the changing state-society dynamics. The study primarily focuses on discourse, in both textual and visual modes, relating to national humiliation and national pride that constitute the two key ingredients of Chinese nationalism. Accordingly, two cases are chosen for empirical investigation: the commemoration events for the Nanjing Massacre and the 2015 Victory Day Parade event. The study uses discourse analytical tools from Discourse Historical Approach and multimodal approach and highlights the importance of having a situated understanding of Chinese nationalism from historical and cultural perspective. It argues that Chinese online nationalism is (re)constructed by a multiplicity of discourses via digital practices, characterised by the evolving dynamics between state and society and situated in the wider political and cultural contexts. The thesis shows that digital communication has changed the means by which the landscape of Chinese nationalism is shaped, which is manifest in two ways. Firstly, national symbols and rituals, as an important means of patriotic education for the CCP, have been “relocated” from physical space, such as Nanjing and Tiananmen, to virtual cyberspace. By incorporating technology into its patriotic education framework, the CCP increasingly extends its discursive power in propagating patriotism, thereby making the Internet an institutionalised patriotic education venue. Secondly, online nationalist expressions and communication provide fertile ground for Chinese Internet users to explore their discursive space in political communication, allowing them to reshape the mythscape of the national past and reconstruct national identity.

Della, Mea Carolyn L. "A comparison of two procedures for peer group assignment of institutions of higher education." Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/54511.

Full text
Abstract:
The exchange of institutional information for the purpose of comparative analysis is an established practice in the decision-making and planning processes of institutions of higher education. For comparative analysis to be meaningful, the institutions must be sufficiently alike to be comparable. Hence, colleges and universities are placed into peer groups, comprised of institutions categorized on the basis of relevant criteria. Comparative analyses and the decisions resulting from the analyses are only as good as the peer groupings that provide the sources for comparison. Thus, the way in which peer groups are formed is a cornerstone of the comparative analysis process. The purpose of this study was to compare two grouping procedures, focal proximity, and cluster analysis, in forming institutional peer groups in higher education. The two procedures were examined in terms of their relative reliability, determined by the stability of group membership over a five-year period of time, and in terms of their comparability at a single point in time, measured by the degree of agreement between peer groups formed in 1983 by each of the two procedures. Discriminant analysis was used to examine the relative importance of the variables used as criteria in the grouping procedures. Both procedures were found to form peer groups with greater than chance stability over the five year period of time. For one sample of institutions, focal proximity was found to be more reliable than cluster analysis in assigning institutions to peer groups. There was no difference between the two methods for a second sample of institutions. For both samples of institutions, agreement between groups formed by focal proximity analysis in 1983 and those formed by cluster analysis at the same point in time was greater than could be expected by chance. The variables that loaded most highly on the first discriminant function of the total canonical structure were PHD (proportion of degrees at the doctoral level) and LRES (research expenditures). The variables that were most important when holding all other variables constant were BA (proportion of degrees at the bachelor level) and MA (proportion of degrees at the master's level).

Abstract:
Why did EC enlargement negotiations with Spain take so long? This thesis argues that agricultural issues dominated negotiations despite the political and strategic aims of stabilizing Western Europe's southern flank that underpinned the raison d'être of this enlargement. The framework of Historical New Institutionalism is used to argue that several 'biases' operating at three levels account for the length and nature of these negotiations. At the first level, the 'bilateral' format of the negotiation procedure between Spain and the EC favoured existing EC members and protected the acquis communautaire. The Community's negotiating positions, as bargains in themselves, tended to be inflexible, and reduced Spain's input in the discussions and in the agenda-setting process. At the EC level, the CAP exhibited an unusual capacity to withstand the changes required by enlargement. This was because the EC's decisionmaking structure was fragmented into sectors and levels which allowed a closely knit 'policy community' to run the CAP in a way that was relatively insulated from other issue-areas. Change in the CAP occurred to cope with enlargement, but in a path-dependent way, passing the cost of adaptation on to Spain. At the national level, member states' so-called national interests with regard to enlargement were mixed, with no clear priority, and conflicting sectoral views. This resulted from the mechanisms of interest intermediation and inter-departmental co-ordination, which shaped the formulation and representation of national views in Brussels. Spain's accession was finally made possible when new redistributive policies for the Mediterranean and fresh budgetary resources were agreed. These were approved as part the wider package-deals surrounding the Single Market project and the Single European Act. HNI provides a new and persuasive framework with which to understand the difficulties of institutional change associated with enlargement negotiations.

Zeng, Jinghan. "The Chinese Communist Party's capacity to rule : legitimacy, ideology, and party cohesion." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2014. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/64241/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis studies the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)’s capacity to rule in contemporary China by examining (a) its quest for popular legitimacy and (b) its search for party cohesion. In explaining the CCP’s ruling basis, a plethora of political science and economics literature has pointed to China’s economic growth. Conventional wisdom considers ideology to be obsolete and the political reform to be too limited to take any substantive effect in China. This thesis argues that ideological adaptation and the institutionalization of power succession play crucial roles in maintaining the CCP’s popular legitimacy and party cohesion. China’s economic success is certainly important, however, it also creates a fundamental dilemma of the CCP’s rule. If a communist party is not to deliver communism and class victory, why is it there at all? There is a potential contradiction between generating economic success by utilizing quasi capitalist economic policies on the one hand, and the fact that this is a communist party that supposedly justifies its rule by being the vehicle to deliver a communist society on the other. This thesis shows how the CCP has been constantly revising its ideological basis for justifying – if not legitimizing – its rule. By studying the CCP’s ideological discourses, the mechanism of ideological promotion, and their effectiveness, this thesis makes a valuable contribution to the relevant literature. In addition to ideology, the institutionalization of power succession is also crucial to the CCP’s rule. During Mao Zedong’s rule, an un-institutionalized power system had caused endless fierce power struggles within the party, which indirectly led to economic stagnation and social unrest. Thirty years of institutionalization has made leadership transitions in China more stable, transparent, predictable, and smoother now than ever before. By offering a large amount of first- and second-hand data on China’s leadership transition, this thesis shows how the institutionalization of power succession helps to maintain regime stability and legitimacy.

Hawkins, Robert L. "Training transfer and utilization: an empirical investigation into the perceptual effects of middle management training in an organization." Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/71276.

Abstract:
Administration of educational curriculum beyond the traditional classroom are becoming an increasing concern for public and private sector organizations that offer formalized supervisory and management training. Training is expensive. Salaries of trainers, materials and equipment, and especially lost production are factors that go into the decision-making process when companies invest dollars into training employees. The establishment of cost effectiveness in terms of whether or not training content transfers to the job is of vital concern. Studies of learning transfer are rare, but even rarer are long-term measures. This study empirically, measured learning transfer and utilization from Communication, Stress Management, and Team Building content seminar/workshops at both short and long-term intervals. The study was divided into three distinct phases. The first phase was an experimental design using randomly selected treatment and control groups with an uncorrelated t-test used in the statistical treatment of group measures. The second phase of the study utilized treatment group only comparison of matched item measures at six-week and one-year intervals. A correlated t-test was employed for statistical analysis. The final phase of the study utilized external interviewing of supervisors of the managers who received the treatment. The supervisors were employed as external anchors to provide testimony as to the perceptual effects of learning transfer. The study suggested that learning transfer and utilization did occur in all three areas of intervention relevant to Phase I. Phase II suggested that long-term effects were present in two of the three interventions. External interviews in Phase III were not found to be highly contributing to the conformation of training transfer.

Asche, Jane Ann. "Social exchange: an assessment of its role in successful volunteer/salaried staff partnerships." Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/71275.

Full text
Abstract:
Managers of nonprofit voluntary associations are seeking volunteers to work with salaried staff in the delivery of human services as government agencies reduce or eliminate support for programs. Competition among organizations to attract and retain talented volunteers is increasingly a problem. One of the ways organizations are increasing the effectiveness of their programs is to recruit management volunteers to work at all levels of program development and delivery. The specific purpose of this study was to analyze factors affecting the motivation of individuals to accept and remain in a management-level, volunteer job similar to that being performed by a salaried manager. This was done by conducting ten in-depth case studies of pairs of salaried and volunteer managers working together as a management team at the top administrative level of a national nonprofit human service organization. Data collection for the study was done through the ethnographic interview process. A structured method for carrying out analytic induction was used to perform the data analysis. One major cultural theme and patterns of related minor themes emerged from the dimensions of similarity and contrast across the ten cases and the three different management sites at which data were collected. Key motivational factors identified in each of the case studies corroborate the importance of certain theoretical variables identified in Blau's theory of social exchange for attracting and retaining volunteers to management-level jobs. However, these theories did not fully explain the interaction of certain variables to create a pattern of high satisfaction for both partners in certain cases. Other factors that contributed to the level of expressed satisfaction in the partnerships were related to certain aspects of the management style of the salaried manager, self-esteem of the volunteer manager, organizational climate of the management site and the cultural traditions of volunteerism within each of the three geographic regions in which the sites were located. These factors that created satisfaction with the salaried and volunteer managers are important because of the relationship indicated in the research literature between motivation, job satisfaction and organizational productivity.

Polakiewicz, Frank J. "A legal and descriptive analysis of the authority, governance and performance of the Virginia High School League, Inc." Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/77780.

Abstract:
Purpose of the Study Since 1977 the Virginia High School League (VHSL) has been the subject of reports, legislative agendas and resolutions introduced in the General Assembly. These documents raised several questions concerning the authority, structure and performance of the VHSL. The purpose of this study was to answer the following primary questions: 1. What is the legal source and basis of the VHSL's authority? 2. Who governs the VHSL? 3. Does the VHSL provide adequate due process? 4. What is the source of any dissatisfaction that may exist and how can such dissatisfaction be abated? Design of the Study The study consisted of two phases. The first involved the research and analysis of state statutes and case law related to the administration of interscholastic athletics, and a review of the handbooks of selected state athletic associations. The second phase was the design, construction and implementation of a survey to determine and compare the opinions of a sample of principals, local superintendents, local school board chairmen and legislators concerning the authority, governance and performance of the VHSL. The data were analyzed using the cross-tabs and frequencies commands available on SPSS-X. Conclusions 1. Based upon their implied authority to implement rules and regulations necessary to supervise the schools within their jurisdictionL . local school boards have delegated the administration of interscholastic athletics to the VHSL. 2. The VHSL is governed by the principals of the member schools, but avenues of participation do exist for local school boards, the state department of education and others. 3. The due process provided by the VHSL satisfies any requirement that may exist . concerning the provision of either substantive or procedural due process. 4. The respondents were satisfied with the performance of the VHSL, but authority and power was a source of dissatisfaction. Most high school principals believe the VHSL should be able to pass regulations binding upon local school boards, but the remainder of respondents disagreed. Most local school board chairmen believe they have no input into the formulation of VHSL policy, but believe they should be actively involved in the governance of the VHSL. Principals disagreed and stated th~t local school boards should have an advisory role. 5. If the dissatisfaction of local school board members is not abated, the VHSL will be made accountable to local school boards by the concerted action of the local school boards or the General Assembly. The VHSL could reduce existing dissatisfaction by increasing the participation of local school boards in the governance of the VHSL within the existing structure of the VHSL. Most respondents did not favor the intervention of state agencies.

Abstract:
Thesis (DPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 1992.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Culture is and always will be of paramount importance to man. If the culture base is threatened, serious conflict and other problems will ensue. Even though there has been talk about a so-called internationalism that denotes a world devoid of different cultures, reality has caught up with the much advocated "melting pot" theory. Depriving groups of their cultural rights, or simply overlooking these rights, can result in a dangerous "boiling pot". Each culture group has a need for its own identity. Because only a small portion of the world population live in culturally homogenious states the potential for conflict is great between different groups that want to uphold and develop their own cultures. This is especially true where minority and majority groups exist within the same national boundaries. For any minority group wishing to preserve and develop its culture a logical solution would be to organize people in cultural organizations to maximize their effectiveness in attaining their goals. In this study, the task and activities of the cultural organization are examined, especially in respect of preserving, maintaining, and developing the culture of a specific group, in particular within minority cultures. Firstly, minorities as a group are discussed, with special reference to their particular needs, conflicts and threats and the conditions for survival.Subsequently, culture as a humanphenomenonis examined. In chapter 3 the cultural organization as a distinct organization, with its own characteristics, problems and success factors, is discussed. Chapter 4 examines cultural organizations and analyzes different ones, especially those of minority groups. Chapter 5 discusses Afrikaans cultural organizations along broad lines, emphasizing their chronological development, problems, inadequacies and challenges. The ATKV, as a minority cultural organization, and its activities are extensively discussed in the followingchapter. In conclusion, the study deals with the requirements and challenges for the successful task fulfilment of cultural organizations in order to understand, plan and evaluate their important task, especially within minority cultures.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis is a study in the field of organisational decision making. The focus is on decision making where the organisation is the unit of analysis (as opposed to the individual). It is a systemic approach rather than a behavioural or personal approach. The methodology employed is a conceptual study, which comprises the description and discussion of four models of decision making. Each model is discussed individually. The models date from the late 1940's to the middle 1970's and are known as the 'rational', 'procedural', 'political' and 'anarchic' models of organisational decision making. In conclusion, a major problem in the understanding of organisational decision making is discussed. This problem relates to how generic organisational decision making activity can be understood, without having to consider the behavioural features of decision making.
Die benadering is sistemies eerder as 'n gedragsbenadering of persoonlike benadering.

Abstract:
In the last two decades, against the backdrop of multiple anti-foreign protests in China, among which the anti-Japanese protests were prominent, debates emerged over the rise and meaning of Chinese nationalism. This thesis analyses the nature and formation of China’s nationalism towards Japan, with an emphasis on bottom-up manifestations of nationalism. The analysis compares the anti-Japanese demonstrations and boycotts of 2010 and 2012 triggered by disputes over the contested Diaoyu/Senkaku islands in the East China Sea. The current literature on Chinese nationalism is largely dominated by top-down perspectives which neglect the prospect of a nationalism separate from the state. This thesis argues that it is not only that bottom-up and top-down forces coexist, but that they interact in a dynamic and bidirectional process. This interaction, explained through Giddens’ structuration theory and Wendt’s constructivist theory, is significant in understanding how nationalism is shaped. In the detailed analysis of nationalism theories of instrumentalism, along with those of primordialism and ethnosymbolism are used. It is through these lenses that each step of the “nationalism” is studied - from history and triggers of nationalism to popular manifestations, current discussions of nationalism and its effect on China’s domestic and foreign policy. By placing China into the historical context of the last century, it is shown that anti-Japanese feelings in China are the result of embedded memories of war and a need of unifying the nation against Imperial Japan, rather than purely the result of a political machination. History, combined with threat perception and China’s development, led to large anti-Japanese manifestations over the Diaoyu/Senkaku islands in 2010 and 2012. The authorities employed a number of strategies in order to tone down these events domestically. Through interviews conducted with Chinese academics, researchers, protesters and activists, and discourse analysis applied to state media, it was identified that history, territorial sovereignty, mistrust and reactiveness to Japan’s actions frame the meaning of anti-Japanese nationalism in China. These shared themes brought together a wide spectrum of state and non-state actors, who put aside their dichotomous views over loyalty to the Party-state and loyalty to the nation, and showed their support for the Chinese government. The problematic effects of this type of “unified anti-Japanese nationalism” are that domestically it sets restrictive “standards” for what it means to be a “good nationalist” in China; internationally, it raises serious concerns over China’s foreign policy should a fatal Sino-Japanese accident in the East China Sea occur. The substance of Chinese nationalism may be indicative of the type of international power that China aspires to be and informs the domestic challenges that may influence its external behaviour. By understanding the substance of nationalism, China’s perceptions of itself and “the other”, as well as its intentions home and abroad are captured. Policymakers within China and abroad should not ignore the challenges nationalism poses at the domestic level; they should look into the intricate disputes and negotiations among state and non-state actors, driven not only by economic and political calculations, but by a shared past and emotions that contribute to the internal dynamic of Chinese nationalism.

Abstract:
The need for minimalize the environmental impacts generated by buildings makes imminent the taking of concrete action to improve the quality of the built environments. In search, for the environmental quality, new management models were created, like the certifications for buildings environmental performance. Therefore, this study had as its objective the elaboration of a methodology for certification applied to operational sport and recreation associations, based on the existents environmental certifications. The analysis of the management system for energy, water and waste of one of these associations was also an objective of this study. For the certification elaboration criteria from LEED, AQUA, Casa Azul and PROCEL were selected and analyzed. These criteria were organized in predominant groups with the bigger relevance into the environmental management of the buildings, such as water management, energy management, solid waste management and social responsibility. In order to determine the punctuation for each criteria a research with a specific questionnaire was conducted with professionals realated to the subject. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used, which uses a pairwise comparison of the elements to determine the importance scale. As a result, the analysis of certification tends to be inadequate for use in sporting associations in operation. The AHP proved to be satisfactory as an instrument to support decision-making, since it allowed observing the hierarchy of the criteria of the certification against the opinions of professionals of each area. Regarding the association that was subject of this study, is possible to affirm that there is the possibility of improvement in environmental and social matters. In relation to the energy ambit of the association, the efforts to renew the lamps by the LED technology (Light Emitting Diod). However, the fact that the training pools are installed in open facilities, which implies the loss of energy in the form of heat mainly by evaporation. and consequently, in a greater consumption of diesel oil. With regard to water management at the club, it is worth noting the use of rainwater to supply irrigation demands. There is also the widespread use of water-saving devices such as automatic taps with aerators. However, the main negative point observed is the lack of water meters, since the main source of water is the sources and there is no way to measure the amount withdrawn in each use in the club. In the management of solid waste was verified the correct destination of the recyclable waste of the club, which allows the club to have a financial return from the sale of these materials. As a negative point the lack of segregation at source, resulting in a larger volume of waste sent to the landfill. With regard to the project studied, it is possible to attend a water and waste management with more contributions to environmental management of the club. There is a possibility of improvements in terms of energy management.

Abstract:
Thesis (MMus (Music))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
Die Oranjeklub was the first Afrikaans culture organisation in Cape Town. Active since 1915, it strove to shape Afrikaner identity and advance Afrikaner art and culture. The main aim of the club was to inspire national sentiment, especially among young Afrikaners, and to help cultivate a love in this constituency for their language and history. This national sentiment was nourished by meetings of social and cultural significance. In this respect, Die Oranjeklub played an integral role in early twentieth-century Cape Town to oppose a perceived English political and cultural supremacy, acting as a buffer against the so-called ‘ver-Engelsing’ or Anglicization that was seen to threaten the identity of especially urban Afrikaners. Programmes during meetings usually comprised of a speech, supplemented by music and recital items that were generally contributed by Afrikaans club members. Meetings that deviated from this norm were mainly evenings where plays were performed or festivaloccasions of national importance in which the club was actively involved. The club’s management comprised two levels: an honorary committee and an executive committee. Many historically important figures served on the honorary-committee. The list includes names like D.F. Malan, J.B.M. Hertzog, C.J. Langenhoven and J.C. Smuts, amongst others. The executive committee had equally noteworthy chairmen, like the writer I.D. du Plessis and the critic C.H. Weich. The names of many important musicians can be found on club programmes, including Arnold van Wyk, Blanche Gerstman and Stefans Grové. Important actors and role players in theatre also participated in club events, amongst others Anna Neethling-Pohl, N.P. van Wyk Louw and Sarah Goldblatt. Speakers included personalities like D. Craven, C. Barnard and P.W. Botha. In 1976, after many decades trying to advance culture among white Afrikaners in Cape Town, the club was disbanded. This thesis documents, for the first time, the history of Die Oranjeklub. It also considers the meaning of the club’s cultural activities, especially its efforts to advance music among its members.

Abstract:
This master's thesis studies Utländska biblioteket, a 19th century foreign literature subscription library in Karlskrona, Sweden. The aim of the thesis is to investigate Utländska biblioteket between 1835–1864. The material consists primarily of primary sources from the archive of Utländska biblioteket. The main primary sources are the library's accounts book, its minutes, and two book catalogs. Using analytical tools from Jürgen Habermas, feminist criticism of his ideas and from Pierre Bourdieu, as well as results from previous research on older library forms and female organization in the 19th century, the thesis answers questions relating to the library as a society, its members and its book collection. The investigation shows that Utländska biblioteket was a subscription library as well as a book circle. Based on its regulations, it should be viewed as a sort of public sphere, but in reality Utländska biblioteket was an exclusive group, consisting of a socially homogenous group of people who in large extent knew each other. Its members were in large part female and aristocratic. The reading of foreign literature and the focus on quality, can be viewed as an act of distinction. Utländska biblioteket was, compared to other similar libraries, unusual primarily because of its large female membership. This is in the thesis explained through the viewing of the library as a female organization, where the male members in part play a role as acting agents in the library's contact with for example book dealers. Also, the book collection shows proof of a certain female subject interest. Based on these facts, Utländska biblioteket can be viewed as a female counter public, where women created a space for themselves where they, through the literature and through the membership in a society, could reflect on their identities, as well as make claims on what a woman was and could do. This is a two years master's thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.

Abstract: The Community Health Agent?s work in the Family Health Strategy is technical, in the care and assistance to population and political organization in the popular demonstration, understood as the relationship between the community and staff. The specificity of the Agent?s work is permeated by difficulties in the process of identity and psychic suffering, identified in previous researches. The theoretical framework was the Social Psychology, Work?s Psychotherapy and Collective Health. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of the activity of the Community Health Agent in your privacy by living around workplace. The methodology was qualitative, using a combination of resources in data collection: focus groups and participant observation. Overall, the results indicated some points of increased wear of the Community Health Agent , some directly related to loss of privacy, living in the territory that works, hardly manageable because dealing with the health-disease process of people who living daily, sometimes friends and relatives, is a situation that hardly any technical account management get resolve. Others, such as lack of space to discuss the cases treated, devaluation, could be minimized through changes in management and continuing education.

Abstract:

The pickers of potentially recyclable and reusable materials are present in society for a long time, often living on the fringes of this that does not recognize the important role they play in the sense of environmental preservation. Its importance was recognized with the implementation of the Brazilian solid waste Policy (PNRS), both on the issues related to management and environmental management in relation to working conditions. Given the importance of this professional to society and the environment, this study had as its objectives: to check if the organisation of collectors (members and nonmembers) interfere in situations and working conditions of these professionals and; identify how studies are being developed on municipal solid wastepickers in Stricto Sensu courses of engineering and Environmental Sciences in Brazil during the period from 2001 to 2013. It is a documentary and bibliographic research using data from the report extension project entitled "capacity-building and Project support for activities of Informal garbage collectors in the city of Caxias do Sul and the research project developed by the Center for studies and research in Public and Social Policies, called" Labour Activities of solid waste pickers: impacts on Life andon Environmental Quality ". From the data collected, we have selected some variables that are related to socio-economic conditions and working of these professionals, whose data were presented in the form of charts and graphs. To identify the number of dissertations which refer to dung, was made a survey of the dissertations published in the Bank of the CAPES. The results show that the Organization of pickers into associations results in significant improvement in the situations and working conditions of these professionals and to be in associations is important for improvement of these situations and work conditions. As the dissertations, despite the large number of works in the area of engineering and environmental sciences that mention municipal solid waste was identified a small number that has as object of study the dung, suggests an increase in such studies.

Abstract: This study analyzes the relation between education and work, based on na investigation of the history of the Dom Bosco Vocational School in Poços de Caldas, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, from the beginning of its activities in 1946 until 1970. This institution¿s first priority was to meet the needs of less fortunate children and adolescents and the focus of its educative process was education for work. The main objective of the research is to understand education related to work and the transformation of society, in each period, as well as the relation to educational policies as directed toward vocational education. One of the questions that guided the research was to verify whether the "preventive system" of Dom Bosco has common points with "work as educative principle" of Gramsci and with the "Foundation of the School of Work" of Pistrak and, moreover, with the "Methodology for the organization of the educative process" of Makarenko. The study seeks, beginning with a dialogue with the secondary sources of Brazilian historiography and with the primary sources collected at the institution, to contribute to the line of research in the history of Brazilian education that works with the History of Institutions of Education, specifically, in the HISTEDBR [¿History, Society and Education in Brazil¿ study and research group]. The research is organized in four chapters and final considerations, showing that different presuppositions in educational proposals, whose structure is based on the work/education pair, imply different relations with the transformation of society

Abstract: This research deals with the actors, initiatives and processes involved in the concept of participatory legislation implicit in empirical referential used in this dissertation, the Standing Committee of Participatory Legislation the House of Representatives. Standing committees are collegiate bodies, composed of deputies, members of the legislative process, which aim to analyses the issues or proposals submitted for its examination and deliberate on them. Indeed, it was attributed to CLP, as major competence, the ability to i) receive various types of legislative suggestions, in other words, initiatives, deriving from civil associations legally constituted ii) deliberate on the suggestions accepted, manifesting by through sight iii) submit the initiatives of laws suggestions approved to started the conduct in the legislative process. The research sought to answer the one hand, which include the ability of the mechanism of law initiatives in the legislative process. Moreover, we intended discuss, without attempting an exhaustive analysis about the possible effects on a model institutional of mechanism having allowed civil organizations to propose initiatives under federal law. The results from the first topic point to a real and high capacity inclusion initiatives in the legislative process. However, as they start the conduct in the legislative process a great number of obstacles are found, that cannot be misled by CLP and part of a bigger problem, of relationship between the legislative an executive powers even as regards the legislative production in Congress. Regarding the second topic, the raised discussion suggests that civil organizations seem to be exerting the function of representation that locus par excellence is the one of traditional political representation. Moreover, prior to those discussions, we seek analytic interpretations about the emergence of a mechanism like the CLP within the legislative process, noting, amid a recent wave of institutional reforms, opening processes of traditional institutions, worldwide, plus a national context of growing proliferation of so-called participatory institutions

Abstract:

Summary :

As suggested by the title, this research contributes to a study of the institutionalization of the governance of organizations, institutions or enterprises. Two parts are developed :the first one explores the concepts, notions, theories and methods ;the second one concerns various studies through content analysis, factor analysis, typological analysis and classic binary analysis.

In the first part, the first chapter, after an introduction dedicated to the definition of the concept of institutionalization, is concerned with the description of what ‘organization’ meant. A second chapter contains literature about the concept of power, while the third one questions the goals or finalities of the organizations (and their power). The fourth chapter, which has a particular status, explores the literature covering the concept of governance (of organizations). We analyze in this chapter the relationship between the notions of power and governance. The fifth and last chapter of this first part is devoted to the methodology. It is a hyphen between the first part called theoretical and the second part called empirical, in the sense that it mobilizes and describes the methods and analytical techniques used in the various realized studies.

The second part is based on an analysis of the perception of discourse on governance through a content analysis of some reference’documents (texts) for governance (including the discourse that contributes to the institutionalization of governance) and a statistical analysis displaying a questionnaire. Four studies are carried out. The first one consists in a content analysis of corporate charters of the enterprises of Bel 20. The aim is to see how is structured the discourse supported by these documents. The results show an ‘anchorage’ link between the content discourse of these charters and the content discourse of belgian corporate governance to which these companies declare their allegiance. In the second study, interviews are conducted to understand how the writing and publication of these reference’documents were realized. In order to check if the institutionalization of governance (and discourse about it) exists (or not), another content analysis of charters and belgian governance codes is achieved (third study). It consists in the study of the trace, indices and indicators analysis (about this institutionalization) in two charters (company Befimmo) and two belgian governance codes (those of 2004 and 2009). The results show a tendency to institutionalize governance and discourse on it through the development of psychological factors identified in these documents. At the same time, this study reveals the institutionalization of this discourse by the law (including recent laws that regulate certain matters of governance).

To close this research, a fourth study is proposed on the basis of a questionnaire (statistical analysis). It aims to understand the structure of the perception of the discourse on governance within a category of actors, namely students at Free University of Brussels (ULB), future organizations’actors. It is takes the form of a case study :six cases. The goal of this study is to try to collect the possible perceptions and observe how they are structured. The analysis shows that ultimately the discourse on governance is more perceived (by a majority of students) as a management approach that focuses on informal mechanisms underlying the negociation, cooperation, dialogue… Moreover, in the overall, the results of this study suggest the existence of an institutionalization of governance through the discourse on governance (laws, charters, governance codes…) and the perception of it. This discourse advocates less formal and more informal mechanisms ;hence the institutional power underpined by the formal mechanisms must be redefined or reinvented. This institutionalization presents then an impact on the power of organizations ;hence it must be better investigated and managed to promote their adaptation.

Abstract:
This study seeks to revisit the debate of the potential recyclable material’s management from the case of the association of recyclable material ACUBA, located in Curitiba-PR. Initially, the actions from the public power for recyclable material’s management in Curitiba-PR were reconstructed. The role and forms of participation from the collectors association on the solid waste management process. Characteristics, hierarchies and behaviors from the work organization on the ACUBA were identified. An organization chart and a flow were drawn up of the organization of the waste management and the contribution of the collectors association in the process of collecting, sorting and selling. The program “Reciclagem e Inclusão Total – Ecocidadão”, directed by the “Secretaria Municipal de Meio Ambiente” of Curitiba-PR has contributed to the social inclusion of the waste collectors policies. However, the inclusion measures are not sufficient to change the vulnerability state of the exercise of this kind of work, the discrimination on the personal personal treatment, the lack of respect and the risk of accidents. Those contradictions are being worked on projects, products, programs, techniques methodologies in Curitiba-PR, which aim to minimize the conditions of precariousness and informality in the work.

Abstract:

This dissertation analyzes the development of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), a Muslim-American religious association, from the Iranian Revolution to the inauguration of our nation's first African-American president. This case study of ISNA, the largest Muslim-American organization in North America, examines the organization's institution-building and governance as a way to illustrate Muslim-American civic and religious participation. Using nonprofit research and theory related to issues of diversity, legitimacy, power, and nonprofit governance and management, I challenge misconceptions about ISNA and dispel a number of myths about Muslim Americans and their institutions. In addition, I investigate the experiences of Muslim-Americans as they attempted to translate faith into practice within the framework of the American religious and civic experience. I arrive at three main conclusions. First, because of their incredible diversity, Muslim-Americans are largely cultural pluralists. They draw from each other and our national culture to develop their religious identity and values. Second, a nonprofit association that embraces the values of a liberal democracy by establishing itself as an open organization will include members that may damage the organization's reputation. I argue that ISNA's values should be assessed in light of its programs and actions rather than the views of a small portion of its membership. Reviewing the organization's actions and programs helps us discover a religious association that is centered on American civic and religious values. Third, ISNA's leaders were unable to balance their desire for an open, consensus-based organization with a strong nonprofit management power structure. Effective nonprofit associations need their boards, volunteers and staff to have well-defined roles and authority. ISNA's leaders failed to adopt such a management and governance structure because of their suspicion of an empowered chief executive officer.

Matheis, Christian G. "Creating and sustaining a whole community in hierarchical institutions." Thesis, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1957/30867.

Abstract:
In this thesis, I examine some of the relationships between hierarchy and community that exist in institutions. Within institutions, individuals are separated from one another and organized hierarchically based on arbitrary inequalities. In general, I discusses inequalities based on race, class, gender, sexual orientation, age, ability, etc. Institutions organized based on arbitrary inequalities cannot create and sustain a whole community since such inequalities result in hostile or coercive treatment of individuals based on characteristics or criteria over which they have no control. If it is true that people want and/or need community, then it matters a great deal for us to know whether or not community can exist in hierarchical institutions, since certain kinds of hierarchies interfere with building and sustaining community. I explain how the concept of "whole community" allows for the unity of unequal beings, provided that the inequalities are based on merit. Furthermore, I describe two fictitious institutions. One, Cloister University is organized on the basis of arbitrary inequalities. The other, Mores University is a whole community, organized on the basis of merit.

Abstract:
All in all, modernization, marketization, and policy fluctuation can explain the development and change of civic associations in 1980s and 1990s. The policy fluctuations plays the key, and has been more significant in the late 1990s. But as to the state-society relations, it also shows that it is not a zero-sum game, but a win-win game in recent years.
Civil associations have been a window to state-society relations in China, which catch eyes and minds of students of China since middle-1990. The theoretical perspectives always adopted include civil society and corporatism, which pay more attention to the political aspects of civic associations. Based on case studies, previous research does not explain the variations of civic associations both in time and spaces.
In analyzing the first period, various sources of data are collected to verify the prevailing modernization hypothesis and transition hypothesis. Emphasis has put on the impact of political fluctuations in 1980s. Data shows, the higher level the association registered, the more sensible they are when facing the fluctuations. Based a time series comparison, the sensitivity to fluctuation is also a function of the types of associations. Business associations, recreational associations are more sensible than others. Marketization is closely related to the development of business associations and professional association. State played a key role in the development of them. Modernization is a key factor in the development of academic associations and recreational associations. However, in a cross-sectional analysis, modernization also accounts for a part of variations of associational density between different areas, but the correlation is weak. The balance of power between state and society brought by market transition shows no correlation with the difference of associational density in the cross-sectional analysis.
In understanding the development of associations in the second period, data comes from a nationwide sampling survey and the Statistical Yearbook of Chinese Civil Affairs. Comparing to the situation in 1980s type by type, it is shown that policy change and political fluctuation are the most important explanations for the development of associations in 1990s. It finds that during the re-registration and houseclean campaign, the total number of associations dropped greatly. But more grassroots association were accepted and the autonomy of civic associations are also strengthened. But a panel analysis of provincial associational density between 1992 and 2003 shows that economic development and marketization are positive to the associational density after controlling the policy fluctuations. But there is no significant relations between the social modernization and associational density. When a interaction between the covariates and the policy change are considered, all except the urbanization are not significant related to the associational density.
To fill in both empirical and theoretical gaps, my research intends to analyze the macro political economy of civic associations in China. After reviewing the history and mapping out the landscape of civic associations, I put forward a comprehensive theoretical framework integrating modernization, marketization, and policy fluctuation as independent variables to interpret the development of civic association in Reform China. It has been divided into two periods: 1978∼1991 and 1992∼2004.
