Abstract:
Reconstruction is an essential measure for a society in a state of flux as a result of man-made- conflict. A long-term approach must become a priority and the guiding goal of reconstruction. Reconstruction rebuilds literally the infrastructure for damaged societies, and this process can succeed only if there is a national commitment to redevelopment of a fit-for- purpose built-environment as well as a commitment to involve the affected community’s facilities user-needs within an integrated asset-management framework.

Abstract:
The surveys proposed in this work intend to show the extraordinary and expressive frequency, not yet examined in the studies about the author’s works, in which these characters, here called reader-characters – the characters that the short story’s plot identifies as readers of books –, appear, manifest themselves and receive considerable space in Machado’s short narratives. After outlining a historical panorama about the conditions at which occur the circulation of books and about book-reading habits in the city where Machado lived, Rio de Janeiro – considering the leading roles practiced by readers, books, authors, translators and editors in the second half of the 19th century, in Brazil –, this study examines objectively, in reviews, 123 Machado’s short stories that have reader-characters or references to characters that read books. The inventory brought about in this study identifies and classifies books and authors read, idiomatic origin of literatures read, non-literary readings, reading manners, patterns of reading manners in different short stories, the book as an object, age and social situation of the reader, amount of reader-characters and of short stories with reader-characters, female and masculine readings, most read books and authors and novels, novels’ titles, novels’ subjects, short story’s first publication date, period of history in which takes place the story’s plot, periodical or anthology that published the story, prices of books read, non-specified readings and readings specified by subject or author or title, amount of stories in which is read some author or title or literature or type of book, and characters’ opinions and thoughts on readings and on book-reading habits.

Babiker, Ahmed Gasmelseed. "Age at Sexual Assault and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in Females Residents of Virginia." VCU Scholars Compass, 2005. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/893.

Full text
Abstract:
Background Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric debilitating condition that can occur in individuals who experience extremely stressful or traumatic life events. Sexual assault is considered as one of the most traumatic stressor in life. Although few studies investigated the association between history of sexual assault and PTSD, no studies have examined the impact of age at sexual assault on PTSD.Method A cross-sectional telephone survey was conducted among adult female residents of Virginia from November 2002 to February 2003. A total of 1,769 women aged 18 and older were interviewed using a random digit dialing method. Detailed screening questionnaire was utilized to ascertain the occurrence of sexual assault, age at sexual assault and PTSD. The DSM-IV diagnostic criteria were used to define PTSD.Result The prevalence of PTSD among women with no history of sexual assault, those victimized before the age of 18 and 18 and above was 8.1%, 35.3%, and 30.2% respectively. Multivariate logistic regression model showed an increase risk of PTSD among women assaulted at a younger age. Compared to women with no history of sexual assault, women who were victimized before their 18th birthday were 2.8 times more likely to suffer from PTSD [OR=2.78 (95% C1=1.87- 4.23)]. The risk of PTSD among women victimized as adults was 2.6 times higher compared to women with no history of sexual assault [OR=2.59 (95%CI =1.43-4.70)].Conclusion This study provided important information on the association between PTSD and age at sexual assault. The risk of PTSD is relatively higher among those assaulted before the age of 18. The adverse effect of sexual assault as a risk for PTSD in addition to other negative health problems is a major public health concern. Primary prevention strategies should be in place to detect sexual assault victims and prevent the occurrence of PTSD.

Wildi-Yune, Jeanny. "Does accreditation assure quality?" Thesis, University of Leicester, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/9583.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis delves into the question of whether accreditation can assure quality. To answer this, an accreditation scenario of a private international higher education institution is studied in depth. There are four principal objectives to the research question which are: 1. To investigate how quality is conceptualised by various stakeholders 2. To assess the effectiveness of accreditation standards 3. To examine whether the accreditation process is valid, reliable and relevant, and 4. To evaluate if the accreditation agency enacts what it purports to do. Based on current theories and approaches to quality and quality assurance, certain elements are highlighted in the research process such as the use of quality standards, issues of accountability and continuous improvement, and the culture and context surrounding an accreditation event. The methodology used is one of participant observation applied to a case study. The occasion of the decennial reaccreditation of a for-profit Swiss school by an American accreditation agency serves as the field of research. Data were collected firsthand from the various constituents engaged in this reaccreditation. Fundamentally, the process comprised of self-evaluation and an on-site peer review, so there is focused discussion on these two critical audit methods and their interrelationship. The field notes are supplemented by longitudinal data representing the last twelve years of involvement in accreditation of the case study school including two other quality assurance approaches, one Swiss and the other, ISO. After a review of the various school activities which come under the remit of the agency, the accreditation procedures are examined for validity, reliability and relevance. An analytic induction of the findings confirms that accreditation does indeed assure baseline quality, albeit its current orientation towards publicly funded establishments. Thus accreditation of for-profit schools represents an imminent domain of future research.

Abstract:
Monitoring a program's execution is fundamental to the debugging, testing and maintenance phases of program development. This research addresses the issue of monitoring the execution of a distributed program. In particular, we are concerned with efficient techniques for evaluating global state predicates for distributed programs. The global state of a distributed program is not well-defined, making the monitoring task complex compared to that of a sequential programs. Processes of a distributed program execute concurrently, and the events of the program cannot be totally ordered. Each process has its own local memory, and the local memories are physically separate.;Despite the difficulties of defining a distributed computation's states, monitoring a distributed program requires reasoning about constituent processes' execution as a single collective entity. We have extrapolated the semantics of the sequential program's assert statement into the distributed context. A distributed assert statement is a global predicate that is anchored at a control point of one processes, and that is evaluated when that process executes the assert.;We have developed a runtime method for monitoring both stable and unstable properties that does not disrupt the computation of the distributed system. A distributed assert statement is evaluated with that statement's causal global state which incorporates the state of the system as a whole as it may have causal impact upon the assert statement. A runtime protocol has been implemented that constructs the causal global state and evaluates the assert statement. No additional synchronization or message passing is imposed on the distributed application although some message sizes are increased to propagate state information. The causal global state is immediately available providing real-time feedback.

Pepper, Sarah E. "Self Blame in Sexual Assault Survivors and Attributions to Other Sexual Assault Survivors." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2009. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc12181/.

Full text
Abstract:
Previous research indicates that survivors of sexual assault often blame themselves for the assault. Research has also shown that people blame the perpetrator in some situations and the survivor in other situations involving sexual assault. The purpose of this study was to discover if survivors of sexual assault who blame themselves tend to blame other survivors (survivor blame) in situations different from their own. Another purpose was to assess whether or not sexual assault survivors who do not blame themselves for their attack tend to blame other survivors. The participants' attributional style was also assessed in order to understand the relations between self-blame and survivor blame in situations involving sexual assault. Findings indicated that certain types of attributional style are related to self-blame in sexual assault survivors and blame toward sexual assault survivors depicted in vignettes. This indicates that attributional style may have important implications in the clinical setting to aid sexual assault survivors who experience self-blame, as well in educating society about sexual assault and the ultimate responsibility of perpetrators.

This research intends to suggest how Nikkei religiosity in Brazil, between 1932 and 1950, was developed through non-institutional channels like religious representations and practices present in cemeteries. For that, the sepultures existent in Cemetery of Assaí – PR – are utilized like privileged sources, comprehended like artifacts of material culture, as well as other documents like interviews, literary works, statistic data, journal’s articles and criminal processes. It seeks to question the idea according to there wouldn’t have religion among Japanese immigrant and their descendants during the primer half of XX century. In the analyzed necropolis was perceived three typologies of tombs: Buddhist, Christian and syncretic. The signs in the graves remit, generally, to forms of pre-migratory religiosity that was reconstructed in Brazilian territory, articulated, in certain cases, to elements of religious universe present in the country, proceeding especially from Catholicism, including popular, and constituting, thus, a sui generis cultural construct. One of the fundamental aspects is the transference of ancestral worship that, traditionally done in domestic sphere, began to be cemeterized in Brazil, marking the passage of sacred place from private to public sphere. In part, that religiosity is conceived like consequence of own syncretic dynamic of Japanese religions, understanding that the syncretism have an intrinsic logic, don’t being chaotic or innocent. For other side, the phenomenon is comprehended like something elaborated in the interior of conflicts and negotiations of identities in a country marked by anti-Japanese discourses and practices, affirming... Abstract:
School Psychology<br>Ph.D.<br>Sexual assault has increasingly become a large problem on college and university campuses in the United States. Not only is the frequency of the occurrences problematic, but the lack of reporting, the mishandling of cases, and efforts to stop campus sexual assaults have also garnered a large amount of attention. While many research studies have focused on the effectiveness of educational programs aimed to increase awareness, reporting, and prevention of sexual assault among college students, not many studies have examined if students’ abilities to identify sexual assaults in contextual situations and their attitudes regarding sexual assault are affected by these programs. The purpose of this study was to investigate if students entered college with attitudes that are supportive of sexual assault, the ability of first-semester college freshman to identify sexual assault within contexts, students’ decision to report a perceived sexual assault, the likelihood that students would intervene as a bystander, and demographics related to student attitudes toward, identification of, and decisions to report sexual assaults. Participants in this study were 551 freshmen in their first-semester at Temple University, who were 18 or 19 years of age. Participants completed a survey which consisted of demographic questions, 11 original vignettes depicting potential sexual assault scenarios, the updated Illinois Rape Myth Acceptance (IRMA) scale, and the Type T personality questionnaire. Results revealed that about one-third of students surveyed did not completely disagree with sexual assault-supportive statements on the updated IRMA scale, with the He Didn’t Mean To and She Lied attitudes being the most popularly endorsed. Students who endorsed sexual assault-supportive attitudes were significantly more likely to misidentify an instance of sexual assault and to not report a perceived sexual assault in some scenarios. In regards to demographics, males were more likely than females to endorse sexual assault-supportive attitudes, to misidentify sexual assaults, to not report a perceived sexual assault in some scenarios, and they were less likely than females to intervene as a bystander in a sexual assault scenario. Sexuality and ethnic identification had some effect on attitudes endorsed and ethnic identity had an effect on the decision to report a sexual assault in two specific scenarios. In addition, the type of high school students attended and the types of sexual education topics they were educated on prior to college were significantly linked to attitudes endorsed, and the type of high school students attended was significantly linked to identifying instances of sexual assault. The growing issue of campus sexual assault is represented by the amount of students in this study who cannot correctly identify sexual assault situations, by the attitudes that contribute to the occurrences of sexual assault, and by the reasons why students feel sexual assault scenarios should not be reported. The significant relationship between endorsing attitudes and incorrectly identifying sexual assaults, as well as the decision to not report perceived sexual assaults, supports the potentially harmful effects having an attitude that essentially supports sexual assault can have in society. Prevention efforts need to address the root of a problem, which in this case is a culture where sexual assault, largely against women, is excused, dismissed, and subsequently deemed acceptable. Thus, adolescents should be educated and provided with appropriate messaging on topics related to sexual assault well before they enter college.<br>Temple University--Theses

Abstract:
Between 1996 and 2005, Uniform Crime Reports show an increase in girlsâ arrests for assaults. Previous research has suggested two possible reasons for this increase. Some suggest that girls are becoming more violent, while others argue that increases in girlsâ arrests for assaults may be an artifact of changes in parentsâ and police response to girlsâ conflicts in the home. To test these possibilities, this study uses data for 445 agencies (N=128,787) which continuously reported to the National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS) during the years 1996-2005 and information on state domestic violence arrest laws. Bivariate analyses, which assessed the patterns of female violence across years, failed to find evidence of increasing female violence. Through logistic regression analyses, support is found for increasing social control practices despite the fact that after controlling for injury, weapon use, and other characteristics of the incident, state arrest policies appear to equally increase the odds of arrest for boys and girls. Further, an unexpected finding is that African American girls were more likely to be arrested than white girls until arrest laws were introduced into the model indicating that the effect of race was mediated by domestic violence laws. Directions for future research are discussed.

Abstract:
Assent, currently defined as “a child’s affirmative agreement”, is a way in which some children are included in the decision-making process regarding their participation in clinical research. Current guidelines for paediatric research do not provide clear directions for how assent should be handled, resulting in confusion among researchers. The goal of this research project was two-fold: to examine the ethical arguments for assent with a view to developing concrete moral justification for its being required, and to develop a framework of significant issues for an investigator to consider when deciding whether to gain assent from an individual child. After an in-depth analysis, it was determined that the ethical justification for assent arises from the researcher’s dual obligations to the child and his parents. A child’s parents are responsible for determining when and how he will develop his decision-making ability. The researcher has an obligation to engage with the child in a manner that complements their pedagogical style, while also treating the child as a being of moral worth. As a child’s family context has an influence on his participation in medical decision-making, further research on children’s daily decision-making within their families is needed. To this end, a three-phase research agenda was designed: a qualitative focus group study, a quantitative questionnaire study, and a discussion panel with paediatric experts. The children in these studies clearly desired to make decisions but did not express an interest in having complete control. They expected their parents to provide them with decision-making guidance in most aspects of their lives. Data collected from parents illustrated that they often tried to involve their children in decisions by providing them with limited options from which to choose and encouraging family discussion. Participants in the discussion panel stated that they did not expect children to make an independent decision regarding medical care, but they might attempt to give children smaller decisions, such as the arm used to provide a blood sample. These results indicate that the definition of assent should be revised, emphasising the child’s involvement in the overall decision making process, without an expectation of an “affirmative agreement”, likely mimicking a familiar decision-making setting from his family context. This could then be documented in the child’s clinical notes through a brief description of all relevant interactions and/or discussions with the child, resulting in an accurate portrayal of the entire assent process.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, School of Architecture and Planning, Program in Media Arts and Sciences, 2010.<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 67-68).<br>The BEAU is an electric-assist bicycle system that is completely self-contained within the rear wheel. The purpose of approaching a electric-assist bicycle in this manner is two-fold: simplifying the device and opening the method of implementation to more creative uses. The project requires a large amount of knowledge from many fields. Based on the limits of research, the project will show the aspects of the BEAU's design and how they meet the overall design goals of the project. The BEAU is made up of several parts, none of which include a bicycle. The design of the BEAU takes the bicycle and rider into account only for aesthetic and control reasons. Inside the BEAU reside a custom motor, closed loop controller with power electronic drive elements for the motor, battery pack with custom battery management circuitry, and torque and rotary position encoders. The simplification of both the device required to electrify a bicycle and the user input required to control such a device is intended to make the BEAU a very attractive electric bicycle conversion alternative that can be used not only for consumer uses, but also in situations of mass utilization, such as a bike sharing program. This research was completed entirely within the Smart Cities group by the author. The original concept of the BEAU was arrived at during a meeting with the late William J. Mitchell as the "GreenWheel" and the project was begun as a team effort with Michael T. Lin, also of Smart Cities. The BEAU manifestation is entirely of the authors design with the purpose of investigating some of the more theoretical aspects of the GreenWheel concept.<br>by Arthur Petron.<br>S.M.

Abstract:
There is a high attrition of rape cases, despite Government attempts to improve rates of conviction (Kelly, Lovett & Regan, 2005). This review will first examine the methodological issues in investigating and current understanding of attrition. It will be suggested that trauma memory may play a role in attrition, given the criminal justice system's emphasis on victims' ability to provide coherent accounts of rape (Office for Criminal Justice Reform, 2006). This proposal will be considered through examination of the processes underlying memory formation, retrieval and PTSD. Related research will be reviewed, indicating that trauma memory is characterised by enhanced spontaneous retrieval and impaired intentional retrieval, thereby impairing victims' ability to recollect rape and potentially contributing to attrition.

Abstract:
The asset management industry constitutes a vital part of the economy thanks to its financing role. The sector has profoundly changed since its establishment and, nowadays, changes in organization, investors’ behaviour and regulatory framework are deeply reshaping the industry. In this context, also the Italian market, which has traditionally been characterised by some distinguishing features, is being influenced by a series of modifications at both European and national level. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the Italian Asset Management industry’s structure and organisation, understand how it is evolving and grasp the factors that can affect its market to then draw implications influencing the business and operations of an asset servicer. This work divides the Italian Asset Management market into two parts, the Asset Managers segment, including collective management and discretionary mandates, and the Pension Schemes segment. These two composing parts are analysed from an Asset Servicer’s perspective, presenting data over the financial instruments they contain. The paper follows the Case Study approach employing mainly secondary quantitative data. In Italy, the distribution of Asset Management products as well as trading activities remain based on banking networks. In recent years, among collective management products, foreign-law mutual funds are the ones that grew the most. This, along with the fact that the asset servicers’ market is dominate by few specialized players operating on a global scale, puts the spotlight on asset servicers’ cross-border level of integration. Even tough discretionary mandates are struggling to recover and have grown at a slower pace, due to “MiFID II” upcoming rules, financial intermediaries will be encouraged to place these products on the market. Lastly, the Italian pension system is underdeveloped if compared to other European countries and few players own the majority of the complementary pension schemes market. The paper highlights how technology innovations, policies of the ruling governments, interest rates levels and national and communitarian regulation are the factors driving the asset management industry.

Abstract:
Installation and utilization of residential distribution transformers has not changed substantially over a long period of time. Utilities typically size their transformers based on a formula that takes into account broadly what types and how many dwellings will be connected. Most new residential dwellings feature 200 Amp service per household with an anticipated energy demand of under 20,000 kWh per year. Average electrical energy consumption varies from state to state but averages to 11,280 kWh per year. Energy demand is expected to fall into a typical residential load curve that shows increased demand early in the morning, then decreasing during the day and another peak early to late evening. Distribution transformers are sized at the limit of the combined evening peak with the assumption that the transformer has enough thermal mass to absorb short overloads that may occur when concurrent loading situations among multiple dwellings arise. The assumption that concurrent loading is of short duration and the transformer can cool off during the night time has been validated over the years and has become standard practice. This has worked well when dwelling loads follow an averaging scheme and low level of coincidence. With the arrival of electric vehicles (EV's) this assumption has to be reevaluated. The acquisition of an electric vehicle in a household can drive up energy demand by over 4000 kWh per year. Potentially problematic is the increased capacity of battery packs and the resulting proliferation of Level 2 chargers. The additional load of a single Level 2 charger concurring with the combined evening peak load will push even conservatively sized distribution transformers over their nameplate rating for a substantial amount of time. Additionally, unlike common household appliances of similar power requirements such as ovens or water heaters, a Level 2 battery charger will run at peak power consumption for several hours, and the current drawn by the EVs has very high levels of harmonic distortion. The excessive loading and harmonic profile can potentially result in damaging heat build-up resulting in asset degradation. In this thesis I present a device and method that monitors pole mounted distribution transformers for overheating, collect and wirelessly upload data and initiate commands to chargers to change output levels from Level 2 to Level 1 or shut down EV charging altogether until the transformer returns into safe operational range.

Sagers, Abby Luthi. "Sexual Assault and Online Help Seeking: An Analysis of Survivor Disclosure and Questions After Assault." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2020. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/8646.

Full text
Abstract:
Sexual assault is a pandemic issue that affects millions worldwide. In the U.S. it is estimated that one in five women and one in 38 men will be victims of rape or attempted rape at some point in their lifetime (Smith et al., 2018). Sexual assault has several significant long-term effects, including negatively impacting survivors’ psychological, emotional, physical, and interpersonal well-being. After a trauma from sexual victimization, survivors face the difficult process of making sense out of what happened, what to do about it, and whether to disclose the experience to others. Reporting, whether formally or informally, can be extremely difficult for survivors, and may even deepen the pain of the experience depending on the response to such a disclosure. However, studies indicate that help-seeking and disclosure are beneficial for the physical and emotional health of the survivor. In this era of social media, many survivors turn to supportive online communities to disclose and/or seek help following their sexual trauma. This study focused on online discussions of sexual violence as shared on reddit, a social media website centered on member discussion and content sharing. The purpose of this study was to examine subreddit forums on rape and sexual assault to identify what issues were shared and what questions were asked by sexual assault survivors following their victimization. Specifically, the research questions included, 1) What types of issues are survivors choosing to share online after assault? And 2) What questions do they ask, and support do they seek from the online community after an assault? Around 300 posts on rape and sexual assault subreddits were analyzed using constructivist grounded theory methodology (Charmaz, 2014). Results suggest that reddit users posted to determine whether their experiences were abusive, to seek help, and to share their stories and seek a supportive witness from the online community.

Yang, Chao. "Highway asset management." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2013. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/14574/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to provide a framework for a decision making system to operate a highway network, to evaluate the impacts of maintenance activities, and to allocate limited budgets and resources in the highway network. This integrated model is composed of a network level traffic flow model (NTFM), a pavement deterioration model, and an optimisation framework. NTFM is applicable for both motorway and urban road networks. It forecasts the traffic flow rates during the day, queue propagation at junctions, and travel delays throughout the network. It uses sub-models associated with different road and junction types which typically comprise the highway. To cope with the two-way traffic flow in the network, an iterative algorithm is utilised to generate the evolution of dependent traffic flows and queues. By introducing a reduced flow rate on links of the network, the effects of strategies employed to carry out roadworks can be mimicked. In addition, a traffic rerouting strategy is proposed to model the driver behaviour, i.e. adjusting original journey plans to reduce journey time when traffic congestion occurs in the road network. A pavement age gain model was chosen as the pavement deterioration model, which is used to evaluate the current pavement condition and predict the rate of pavement deterioration during the planning period. It deploys pavement age gain as the pavement improvement indicator which is simple and easy to apply. Moreover, the deterministic pavement age gain model can be transformed to a probabilistic one, using the normal distribution to describe the stochastic nature of pavement deterioration. A multi-objective and multi-constraint optimisation model was constructed to achieve the best pavement maintenance and rehabilitation (M&R) strategy at the network level. The improved non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) is applied to perform system optimisation. Furthermore, the traffic operations on worksites, i.e. lane closure options, start time of the maintenance, and traffic controls, are investigated so as to prevent, or at least to reduce, the congestion that resulted from maintenance and reconstruction works. The case studies indicated that NTFM is capable of identifying the relationship between traffic flows in the network and capturing traffic phenomenon such as queue dynamics. The maintenance cost is reduced significantly using the developed optimisation framework. Also, the cost to the road users is minimised by varying the worksite arrangements. Consequently, the integrated decision making system provides highways agencies with the capability to better manage traffic and pavements in a highway network.

Specifically, it looks at exchange to exchange and statistical arbitrage, or pairs trading, for the cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin (BTC) and Litecoin (LTC). In this instance they are traded on the LTC/BTC pair. The LTC/BTC is examined with pairs trading by performing statistical tests and implementing automated trading strategy to determine potential profit levels. Subsequently, additional trading strategies are examined based on the concepts of the statistical results in this study and other technical analysis indicators. The study outlines the profit potential of exchange to exchange arbitrage but also shows how this type of arbitrage is in fact quite risky and not as simple as the large spreads would suggest. Pairs trading strategies are instead put forward as a method of profiting on the price movement disparities in the digital asset market without running the same risks as exchange to exchange arbitrage. The strategies proposed are based on statistical tests as well as technical analysis indicators that both aim at predicting price trend and direction and try to profit off abnormal price movements and subsequent normalization. It turns out that a range of profit levels can be achieved. All though the strategies proposed are too rudimentary to consider for live trading, they do prove the basic proof of concept that there are ways to profit from pairs trading in the digital asset market. Trading strategies can be formed that provide considerable returns while reducing risk that would otherwise be encountered with long term investment positions and/or exchange to exchange arbitrage in the digital asset market.<br>O seguinte estudo examina o potencial de risco e recompensa de arbitragem no mercado de ativos digitais.

Rajagopalan, Rupini Deepa. "Asset pricing across asset classes : the impacts of fines and flows." Thesis, University of Reading, 2017. http://centaur.reading.ac.uk/73735/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis consists of four empirical studies that examine two types of information, using a unique set of fines and fund flow data, on a multi–asset setting. The first study finds underperformance of between 29 and 57 basis points per month measured as Carhart model alphas on long-term stock returns of firms after announcements of monetary fines. Additionally, environmental fines are perceived by investors to be more of a concern while social, governance and also long-term aspects matter somewhat less. In the second study, I extend the research on fines by examining the inter-link between equities and bonds using short selling ratios and bond returns. Analysis using a fixed-income model shows that high short selling in the context of fines induces negative underperformances in bond returns. In addition, the underperformances are more profound for portfolios with longer remaining years to maturity and in crisis periods. The third study examines short-term reaction of Credit Default Swaps (CDS) spread changes and stock returns to fines. I find the CDS market is able to anticipate illegality news. Both markets react very differently to fines in different legal stages, industries and also by type of fine. Environmental issues are also a key concern in both CDS and stock markets and they also react more to higher fines per market cap. These empirical studies show that information about fines are valuable for investors as on average companies with illegalities underperform relevant benchmarks in the short and long-term. The fourth study involves fund flows on a global scale in Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs). I use panel data models and find that the explanatory power of ETF fund flows are similar to macro-economic variables in explaining indices returns. I also find investors could use ETF fund flows as information to understand market movements especially globally.

Abstract:
In Aotearoa New Zealand between 1842 and 1872 British colonial judges, juries, and reporters expressed their particular understandings of what constituted “rape” in the contexts of Supreme Court trials. Both white and Maori women encountered scepticism in court and a share of the responsibility for provoking the crimes carried out against them, although Maori women faced particular vilification. While judges frequently declared their strong aversion to the crime of sexual assault, they rarely backed their rhetoric up with strict sentencing practices, even when the male perpetrators were Maori. As a result, an important distinction arose between hypothetical scenarios of rape, characterized by judges and the press as egregious, and real life cases, which rarely met the high standards of rape according to definitions recorded in the press. Through the primary use of newspaper reports on Supreme Court trials contained in the Papers Past database, this thesis explores the contours of these hegemonic definitions of sexual violence in a formative moment of British colonization efforts in New Zealand. It traces the struggle between British masculinity and Maori resistance efforts, and how this struggle played out in heterosexual rape trials tried according to British colonial law. While Maori tribes successfully resisted the British colonial take-over of both their cultural autonomy and land, the British responded by softening the boundaries of race and strengthening the bond of masculine power. In this moment, rape became a symbol of both social chaos through a failure of controlled Victorian masculinity, and representative of men’s nearly limitless access to women’s bodies.<br>Arts, Faculty of<br>History, Department of<br>Graduate

Full text
Abstract:
Self-compassion is defined as the ability to treat oneself kindly following perceived failures and/or painful events; this construct is characterized by three components: self-kindness, common humanity and mindfulness (Neff, 2003). Although some people may naturally be more self-compassionate than others, previous self-compassion manipulations have shown that self-compassion is a mindset that can be taught. Several short-term self-compassion inductions have been published (Adams & Leary, 2007; Breines & Chen, 2012; Leary, Tate, Adams, Allen, & Hancock, 2007) showing that such inductions lead to more positive emotional and behavioral outcomes. The purpose of this research study was to determine whether a short self-compassion induction would impact people’s responses to an imagined sexual assault scenario. Female undergraduates (N = 141) were randomly assigned to a self-compassion condition or a control. All participants imagined a vivid sexual assault scenario and rated how they anticipated they would feel following the scenario (i., e emotion, less identity, fault, state self-compassion, formal and informal disclosure, and future behavioral intentions). Women who received the self-compassion induction experienced less negative effects following the scenario than participants in the control condition. Some of these effects (e.g., negative emotion, negative identity, formal and informal disclosure) were moderated by past sexual assault experiences showing that the self-compassion induction was more effective for women with no previous sexual assault experience. Comparing groups based on sexual assault history revealed the benefits of a short self-compassion induction may be limited to those with no previous experience. If applied to domestic violence programs, we recommend using a longer self-compassion intervention.

Sánchez, Egea Antonio José. "Electropulsing to assist conventional manufacturing processes." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/385428.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents a study on the variation of the mechanical properties of some materials. These variations are registered for processes as bottom bending, wire drawing or round turning, which are performed under high density electropulses. This research implied the study of several issues related to the manufacturing processes and the electric pulses. For example, some isolated systems are developed for each process. This is required for protecting the monitoring devices and machinery from electric drifts. On the other hand, several electropulse generators are designed and manufactured to electrically assist the aforementioned manufacturing processes. The electrical connectors is the main technological issue in each process to ensure good electrical contact during experimentation. Once the manufacturing setup is under control, electropulses are applied on various materials whilst its physical properties are measured and recorded. In particular, the processes are achieved under different electric configurations to infer the influence of the electropulses. The obtained results show that different mechanical and manufacturing properties like elastic restoring forces, yield strength, power consumption, surface roughness and material hardness among others are modified when the manufacturing process is assisted with a pulsed electric field. Additionally, the machinability and formability is improved when the metallic material is affected by current pulses. However, it should be noted that the mechanical properties behavior under different electrical parameters, like current density, frequency discharge and pulse duration, is complex and does not follow an expected relationship. Furthermore, numerical simulation analyses is required to study and understand the complex behavior of the mechanical properties. The manufacturing process of bending, machining and drawing process was done at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (Spain) in collaboration with the Northwestern University (USA), the Universidad Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (Chile) and the Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira (Colombia). This thesis is funded by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness of Spain, reference project: DPI2011-26326 (grant no. BES-2012-056760).

Abstract:
Discipline relationships are consensual adult relationships between submissive and dominant partners who employ authority and corporal punishment. This population uses social media to discuss the private nature of their ritualized fantasies, desires, and practices. Participants of these relationships resist a sadomasochistic label of BDSM or domestic abuse. I conducted in-depth interviews and narrative analysis of social media to explore experiences and identities of people in discipline relationships. The sample includes social media bloggers and past and present participants in discipline relationships. I compared explanations participants give for wanting and participating in discipline relationships. I combine identity theory, constructionism, post-structuralism, and critical feminism as an analytic frame to understand this practice sociologically. I found gender differences in the media format and communication style of participants, but the ritualized expressions for discipline relationships remain consistent regardless of gender. The social process of community identification for participants includes coming out, educating others and “inviting in.” The online community provides a forum for relationship negotiation techniques, and encouraging the embrace of non-normative sexual identity. Participants use social media to form a nascent social movement that resists normative views of sexuality and relationships in the dominant culture.

Croize, Gildine. "Le consentement du patient assuré social." Thesis, Montpellier 1, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011MON10054.

Full text
Abstract:
A major principle of health law, assent is traditionally seen within the boundaries of the binaryrelationship “patient-medical practitioner”. However, assent results from the mutual interaction between patients, medical practitioners and the social security system. Indeed, as the saying notes "Idem est non esse aut non probari", the assent must be effective to really exist. It is promoted by the recognition of the “right to health care”, implying a universal right of social security benefits. However, being financed by solidarity and obliged to respect the constitutional principle of budgetary equilibrium, social insurance must contain its costs. This is why it partakes in a policy of modification of insured patients' behaviours. The assent, at times favoured as anindividual expression of will, tends to overtaken by a social assent, thought to be socially responsible. Between prevention and education, responsibilization aims at increasing efficiency of health care management. Thus, assent, expression of rights and liberties founded on the principle of “disposing of one's body”, is more than ever the insured patient's assent. This insured patient lives in a sanitary democracy which has hazy contours oscillating between incitation and healthcare obligation. These may struggle with the right to respect for private life

Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, School of Architecture and Planning, Program in Media Arts and Sciences, 1999.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 101-105).<br>The problem of finding someone who might be able to help with a particular task or knowledge area exists everywhere, be it in groups of students or corporate settings. Time and effort are spent looking for relevant information when another person in the community could easily provide assistance. Our approach to addressing this problem is to use software agents to assist the search for expertise. Previous research on this topic has been mostly in the areas of information marketplaces, referral systems or information repositories. We built a system, called Expert Finder, which provides a testbed for ideas and techniques developed in the context of this thesis. Expert Finder analyzes previous work of both the novice and the expert to automatically categorize expertise and match it with the user's problem while providing a community-based incentive mechanism. We present alternative profiling and incentive mechanisms to those that had been presented in previous work. We chose the Java Programming domain for our initial implementation and testing of the system. Expert Finder uses each user's Java source files to determine their expertise and uses a Java domain model to match questions and experts. It keeps track of users' willingness to help out as a measure of the social capital in the community. We ran some tests using the prototype system to assess how well these ideas worked, and results are also reported in this thesis.<br>by Adriana Santarosa Vivacqua.<br>S.M.
