Full textThe motor insurance sector currently confronts regulatory, financial, behavioral and technological challenges. Under these circumstances, insurers must uphold in improving their pricing strategies. Two topics related to pricing innovation are discussed in this thesis. We first take up the pricing strategy optimization for new businesses, as well as the renewals. Secondly, we highlight in the usage of experiments in leading us to a better understanding of insurance demand factors. On the first part of this thesis, we address pricing optimization at renewal, then illustrate how empirical demand models that rely on observable data could help the insurers to boost their profits and clients retention rate. We extend afterwards this framework by considering the impact of current pricing decisions on future cash-flows. Consequently, we introduce the Customer Value metric which allows insurers to reflect over the customers' behavior during their lifetime, when it comes to constructing their pricing strategy. The empirical illustrations of the first two chapters rely on natural data observed by the insurer. On the second part of this thesis, field and laboratory experiments will give us better comprehension of the motor insurance demand. Data from a field experiment refine the measure of clients' price elasticity. Offline assessment of several reinforcement learning algorithms shows how pricing experiments can achieve better performances compared with the myopic strategy which does not apply any kind of experiment. Laboratory experiments contribute to the understanding of demand models as well. In particular, we analyze the added value of risk aversion and risk perception in explaining the insurance choices. Furthermore, we examine the external validity of the experiment, i.e. the similarity between the behaviors of the customers in a lab environment versus their factual behaviors in the market.Aside from the duality between experiments and optimization, this thesis also illustrates the duality between private and public data, as well as the duality between empirical and theoretical insurance demand model

Full textThis dissertation provides a contribution to the risk analysis on the French automobile insurance market. The objective of this thesis is threefold. The first aim relates to a theoretical framework applied on insurance market. An original model of double asymmetry of information is presented The main result that emerges is the existence of two kinds of contracts at equilibrium :a separating contract and a pooling contract. The second point concerns the past claims and the risk-coverage correlation. Bivariate and trivariate models are applied for this purpose. It results that the assumption of asymmetry of information is not rejected. The third issue is related to the over-premium that insurers apply quasi-systematically to the young drivers. We show, using econometric modeling, that this over-pricing compared to the experienced drivers’premium isnot necessary and its removal does not compromise the sustainability of the insurance company

Full textIn this Ph.D. Dissertation we study the storm guarantee dedicated to the damage caused by the wind and a development of the behavioral insurance through the automobile risk. We associate external information like the wind speed to insurance data. We propose the construction of a storm index to complete and strengthen the evaluation of the damages caused by the major storms. Then we define a partition of the French territory in 6 zones storms, depending on extreme wind correlations to test several scenarios. These various tests and considerations allow us to improve our storm index. We lean on extreme value theory models to show the impact of the variability on the calculation of return periods and capital requirements. We underline the difficulties to obtain strong results in connection with the extreme events. Concerning car insurance, we test various methods to answer the technical and legal evolutions. We characterize the man/woman partition by using the logistic procedure, the multiple correspondence analysis or the classification trees. We show that it is possible to compensate for the absence of the sex variable with other information specific to the insurants or to their vehicle and in particular the use of kilometric data. Finally, we are interested in the acquired experience by young drivers. We study the behavior on the road of the insurants to create new classes of risks

Full textIssues related to international traffic related to the development of international trade and the free movement of person' trade. The development of trade was done despite differences in their respective legislation. International traffic with indeed lead to conflicts of laws that must be addressed by coordinating measures. It will also lead to conflicts of jurisdiction involving the determination of the competent court to adjudicate claims. The existence of this international traffic has created a regulation to achieve coordination between the various applicable laws and facilitate the process of the victim by avoiding recourse to a judge. Essentially private in origin, regulation evolves under the influence of European integration. The compensation of a victim process chronologically follows two steps. Firstly, it is to determine the law applicable to civil liability. This allows assessing the responsibility of the author of the accident and determine the quantum of compensation. Then he proceeded to its implementation by the insurer under an insurance contract. The content of the latter must comply with the laws governing compulsory insurance in the country of the accident whose function is to cover the amount of the debt liability. Coordinating the lex contratcus with the provisions governing compulsory insurance must be in favor of the lex loci delicti because it has the advantage of being neutral and predictable for all parties

Full textSince the globalization, the automotive competition is growing every other day, and automotive products (vehicles and components) are often developed in one country though its made, used and applied in other markets. The operating conditions such as height, climate, topography, customer perception and other variables are often different from one market to another and could influence on the products reliability. If the market operating conditions are not considered in the vehicle development phase, the product may not fully perform its intended function over useful life period, and also may experience an excessive level of field complaints and/or failure modes specific to those markets and also damage the image of the brand. Therefore it is necessary to predict the export products reliability and based on the reliability data to use as lessons learned for future projects in order to fulfill the global market requirements or at least fulfill the requirements of quality from each country that imports the vehicles. Therefore the main objective of this study is to develop a model to describe the export product behavior and predict its reliability in the field. The model considers the use of warranty claims and also uses the data regarding the vehicles which did not have any claim under the warranty period. Based on the estimative of reliability for the exported vehicle and also their subsystems, its proposed a model to analyze and detect differences between reliability and so to use such data on future projects.
Godzinski, Alexandre. "Three empirical essays on moral hazard identification in insurance." Thesis, Paris, EHESS, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017EHES0106.
Full textMoral hazard is a source of economic distortion. The classical prediction in a simple framework is that a better coverage leads to a lower effort. This thesis studies the extent to which this prediction is empirically verified in more complex settings. The first chapter focuses on health-related absences. The policy under study is the one-day waiting period for sick leave in the French central civil service. This less generous reimbursement policy notably aims at reducing absenteeism. It leads to a decrease in the prevalence of short-term absences. But it also leads to an increase in the prevalence of long-term absences. As a result, the prevalence of all health-related absences stay unchanged. The two following chapters focus on bonus-malus systems used by an Irish car insurer. The second chapter focuses of the introduction on a highly protecting state: the lifetime bonus protection. This protection is granted automatically and freely to insurees under restrictive conditions on past claims and seniority. Compared to the situation in which this protecting state does not exist, the claims rate of protected insurees increases, but the claims rate of unprotected insurees decreases, in the hope of being rewarded with the protection. The existence of the protection induces an intertemporal transfer. Insurees waive present utility by exerting more effort, so as to be rewarded with the protection and to enjoy more future utility due to lower future effort. The third chapter studies the reaction just after the insuree is rewarded with the lifetime bonus protection. The claims rate increases immediately, but only when the protection exists for some time. This suggests that the effect of an incentive change depends on its nature, but also on its context

Full textThe subject of this thesis is the study of the formation of trades on the automobile insurance market in a framework of asymmetric information. The first part presents a survey of the literature of the economics of insurance with imperfect information. The two last chapters are devoted to the elaboration of theoretical models of the automobile insurance market with adverse selection and to empirical tests of these models. These show the existence of a self-selection behaviour with overestimation of the risk by the insured

Full textThis thesis is concerned with the Moroccan law as to the compulsory automobile insurance, which is known for its reciprocal feature, for to the obligation of «being insured»which is overwhelming to drivers corresponds the obligation to «insure»which is compulsory for the insurers. Within this framework, the Moroccan legislator has visibly adopted, just like his French counterpart, a compromise between two possible conceptions of the automobile risk: the «intuitu rei»conception and the «intuitu personae»conception: the one that links the warranty to the vehicle and the one that ties the warranty to the insured driver, leading thus to a hybrid system of insurance liability. The adoption of the first conception is the surest means to find a respondent for every accident caused by a determined vehicle. The second conception takes into account the qualities of the driver and encourages as a matter of fact the efforts of prevention. Therefore, the compulsory automobile insurance has brought deep transformation to the law of obligations as well as to the field of liability. Upon the view of private law contract, a legal status is imposed on the insured and insurers. The former becomes «subjugated» to the legal regime of insurance and the latter becomes supplier of warranty. The social role of this institution governs the following situation: insurance is at the service of the public

Full textFor a long time, insurance has been perceived as a way of transferring responsibilities from insured agents to insurers and thus as influencing insured agents' behavior. Two opportunist behaviors have been analyzed. First, the theory of adverse selection predicts that high-risk agents are likely to want more insurance than low-risk agents. Second, the theory of moral hazard predicts that the wider is insurance coverage, the lower is the level of preventive effort. Thus, both theories conclude that agents who are totally insured should have a higher probability of accident than those who are only partially insured, ceteris paribus. Nevertheless, one of the aims of insurance rating systems which use deductibles and bonus-malus systems and discriminate between insured agents according to drivers and vehicles' characteristics, is to control for these opportunist behaviors. In this thesis, we use individual data to see if the french automobile insurance rating system achieves this aim. In the first part, we present microeconomic contributions explaining adverse selection and moral hazard behaviors. In the second part, we estimate econometric models adapted to traffic risk analysis : count data models (poisson model, binomial negative model, etc). In the third part, we present the french automobile insurance market and build a model illustrating adverse selection and moral hazard behaviors. We conclude that insurance is no longer a factor of risk on its own : the french automobile insurance rating system is efficient to control insured agents opportunism. However, since insurance companies do not usually use mileage to calculate premiums, agents who take out the best insurance coverage drive more than others and thus, they have a higher probability of accidents

Full textThe Tunisian automobile insurance pricing is based on the power of the car and a posteriori pricing mechanism called bonus-malus system that has been adopted since 1993. This thesis proposes, after a presentation of the most significant results of the literature on adverse selection (chapter one) and moral hazard (chapter two), to attempt to analyze in chapter three the relative importance of factors explaining the number of accidents during a period of time and to build up optimal bonus-malus tables based on the number of past accidents by the individuals (Lemaire, 1985 ; Dionne and Vanasse, 1992). In chapter four, we evaluate the efficiency of the bonus-malus plan. Our analyse is based on panel data. The estimates are based on random effects Probit and negative binomial models. This chapter is an application and extension of the articles published by Dionne and Vanasse (1992-1997). We conclude by stating that the bonus-malus, applied by insurers, is not optimal in the actuarial sense and, that it doesn't present an incentive for prudence concerning high-risks

Full textThe automotive sector is one of the most daring in terms of quality, requiring because of that certification to ISO/TS 16949. Although these companies dominate this certification, some lose in the subsequent audits or get little improvement beyond existing. There is evidence that they do not have the maturity to obtain or maintain such certification or guidelines to continually improve. In previous work, it was found out that certified companies had at least level 2 maturity, 1 (minimum) and 5 (maximum), which means a company defined and manageable process. However, what enables the company to improve its indexes have the process is controlled and integrated. The lack of maturity of a product development process (PDP) triggers scrap and rework, compromising the efficient use of resources, impacting the time and cost of development and, indirectly, the quality of the process and final product. However, the guidelines do not have certified companies to improve their processes. For this, the ISO would require some resource associated in order to provide guidance on the aspects that need to be improved. Whereas CMMI is an effective method for obtaining diagnostic and maturity that considers the integration of PDP, this work aims to identify the association between the ISO/TS 16949 and CMMI-DEV 1.2 method. Presenting an overview of PDPs, quality certification and process maturity. Later, associated variables are involved in a process of ISO 9001 certification and the variables evaluated in the ISO/TS 16949 with the variables involved in assessing the maturity level 2 with CMMI-DEV 1.2. The paper explains which items are considered by the ISO/TS 16949, CMMI highlighting items that could be used for diagnosis complement for companies that wish to improve the quality factor, adding, in parallel, more efficiency and productivity of their production processes.

Annual income from car-insurance item occupied a high percentage of the entire fortune-insurance yearly incomes in Taiwan. Such a tendency indicates that keeping customer is important for insurance comany. To reach such a goal, how to maintain the renewal business, to find the higher-loyalty customers, to evaluate the satification of insurance claims as well as maintaining the existing customers and opening new customer sources, are the critical factors to reach the minimum cost and achieve the maximum befefits. In light of above investigation, the thesis explores the association between renewal rates and satisfaction, from sale-channel sources, vehicles, coverd area, insured person's age, sex, marital status and types of insurance policies, etc. to examine the relationship between the renewal behavior and coumstors. Finally, a few of conclusions and recommendations are proposed for future works and relevant policies for references.

The rapid development of modern network technology allows people to have access to varieties of digital media such as audio & video, articles and programs, etc. Since the network system is open to all public, without distinctive protection, delivering information online will be under bare observation. Therefore, the process of automobile firmware download could be monitored by the one who is using a monitorial software, for example, HP Open View, Sniper, etc. In a word, if there is not any protection against leakage, the domain knowledge of the company can be easily obtained. In this thesis, SSL( secure socket layer ) security system is used to provide the protection for the network and it can integrate some special software such as Netscape and Windows Explorer browsers. The advantage of SSL is to form an easy application for highly protected calculation, a high speed processing concealment method and combine with cryptology to have an assured credential. There are two kinds of framework in the thesis. One is WAN, the other is LAN. Concerning WAN ( wide area network ), it combines fire wall, invasion detecting system, leakage detector and SSL. As for local area network ( LAN ), it uses the virtual private network ( VPN ) to prevent divulgence of important information. Above all, it associates an information hiding technique to exchange safety credential successfully. Furthermore, non-technical discussions will be included in this thesis. For example, the staff management is emphasizing the prevention of disclosure of system and company safety loophole resulted from incompetent errors. Real safety and constitution of safety policy are both worth discussing. The experimental results, proven by FIPS140-1, are that the systematic frameworks in this thesis have a high level assurance.

Full textThe field of auto insurance is working by cycles with phases of profitability and other of non-profitability. In the phases of non-profitability, insurance companies generally have the reflex to increase the cost of premiums in an attempt to reduce losses. For cons, very large increases may have the effect of massive attrition of the customers. A too high attrition rate could have a negative effect on long-term profitability of the company. Proper management of rate increases thus appears crucial to an insurance company. This thesis aims to build a simulation tool to predict the content of the insurance portfolio held by an insurer based on the rate change proposed to each insured. A proce- dure using univariate Gaussian Processes regression is developed. This procedure offers a superior performance than the logistic regression model typically used to perform such tasks.
