Abstract:
A new species of crayfish, Astacoides hobbsi, is the seventh recognized in the endemic Madagascan genus Astacoides Guérin-Méneville, 1839 and is described from four male specimens collected in the Andranofotsiorana effluent of the river Ranomadio (Fianarantsoa province). The new species can be distinguished from all congeners by a combination of limited carapace spination, pale white color, gill formula of 13 + epr + 5r, lack of bullar lobes on sternite XIII, laterally curved lateral processes on sternite XIII, and spination of third maxilliped merus and ischium. The new species co-occurs with three other Astacoides species (A. granulimanus Monod & Petit, 1929, A. caldwelli (Bate, 1865), and A. betsileoensis Petit, 1923) in the same stream system. Special consideration should be given to conservation of this new species, as it is the Astacoides species known from the fewest specimens and may have a very restricted distribution.

Abstract:
Prosopocoilus yangi Fukinuki has been rediscovered from central China and is redescribed with male and female genitalia illustrated. A similar species, P. simianshanus new species, is described from Chongqing, central China. Prosopocoilus reni new species is described from Hainan, China. Taxonomic notes are given for Kirchnerius guangxii Schenk, Prosopocoilus astacoides (Hope) and Prosopocoilus duplodentatus Benesh. Three new synonyms are presented: Prosopocoilus Hope = Kirchnerius Schenk new synonym; Prosopocoilus cyclommatoides Lacroix = Kirchnerius guangxii Schenk new synonym; Prosopocoilus oweni melli Kriesche = Prosopocoilus duplodentatus Benesh new synonym.

Abstract:
Species of Stratiodrilus are ectocommensals of freshwater decapod crustaceans, and the genus is also the most speciose within the family Histriobdellidae. However, a global review of the species of Stratiodrilus and their hosts has not been performed in nearly two decades. Based new field collections in Brazil and a literature search, we present a list of Stratiodrilus species and their hosts. We searched for host and occurrence records in papers of species descriptions, review papers and specialized databases. Forty-one host records were summarized worldwide. All host taxa were freshwater decapod crustaceans belonging to Aegla, Astacoides, Astacopsis, Cherax, Parastacus, Samastacus, and Trichodactylus. In addition, we report four new host records for Stratiodrilus circensis, and found Aegla lata as the northernmost host record for this polychaete species. Stratiodrilus circensis also had the largest number of different host species. The greatest species richness of Stratiodrilus is found in the Neotropical region, although members of this genus are also found in Australia and Madagascar associated with crayfishes. Aegla was the most reported host genus associated with species of Stratiodrilus. We provide an updated list to the known species of Stratiodrilus and also discuss the distribution of these histriobdellids.

Abstract:
Madagascar's endemic freshwater crayfish (Parastacidae: Astacoides) are harvested by local people for both subsistence use and small-scale trade. There has been concern that populations, and even species, are threatened by overexploitation but little is known about the harvest or its economic importance. We studied crayfish exploitation in eastern Madagascar over 3 years. The existence of local taboos (fady) preventing commercial crayfish harvesting, as well as access to markets and forest, influenced involvement in the harvest. All four crayfish species found in the region were harvested, but A. granulimanus provided the majority of the catch. In one harvesting village more than 50% of the 47 households were directly involved in the harvest, which contributed USD 2,382 to the village economy in 2003/2004, an important sum in the context of local incomes. Subsistence use was widespread, particularly by children to whom it may provide an important protein source. Community-based conservation (through transfer of harvesting rights and responsibilities for forest management to local communities) is central to a new conservation paradigm in Madagascar. This recognizes communities' long term interest in their natural resources and offers an ideal opportunity for those concerned with the sustainability of the harvest to implement management tools (such as avoiding reproductive females, size limits and no-take zones). We discuss each tool with respect to biological implications and practical constraints. We note that community-based approaches may not be sufficient to conserve rarer species, which make up a small proportion of the value of the harvest.
