Dykhuis, Melissa Joy. "Asteroid Family Dynamics in the Inner Main Belt." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/565904.

Abstract:
The inner main asteroid belt is an important source of near-Earth objects and terrestrial planet impactors; however, the dynamics and history of this region are challenging to understand, due to its high population density and the presence of multiple orbital resonances. This dissertation explores the properties of two of the most populous inner main belt family groups - the Flora family and the Nysa-Polana complex - investigating their memberships, ages, spin properties, collision dynamics, and range in orbital and reflectance parameters. Though diffuse, the family associated with asteroid (8

This report will design a mission and spacecraft to redirect the first Near-Earth Object (NEO) to a stable orbit in the Earth-Moon system. The mission profile includes a soon-as-possible launch, spiral-out escape from the Earth-Moon system, rendezvous, ion beam redirection method, and decommissioning phases, each with accompanying orbital dynamics code written in Matlab. The spacecraft design will include power and mass budgets for each of the subsystems including power, thermal, communications, GNC, fuel, and thrusters. The orbital dynamics code is detailed in the final section of the report.

Abstract:
The main asteroid belt spans ~2-4 AU in heliocentric distance and is sparsely populated by rocky debris. The dynamical structure of the main belt records clues to past events in solar system history. Evidence from the structure of the Kuiper belt, an icy debris belt beyond Neptune, suggests that the giant planets were born in a more compact configuration and later experienced planetesimal-driven planet migration. Giant planet migration caused both mean motion and secular resonances to sweep across the main asteroid belt, raising the eccentricity of asteroids into planet-crossing orbits and d

Abstract:
This purpose of this dissertation is to ascertain whether solar sublimation is a viable method for the deflection of a Near Earth Asteroid. From a research view point, the methods and analysis are applicable to proximal motion around a celestial body, in particular one with a non-Keplerian or irregular orbit as in the case here with the orbit being constantly altered by the deflection action and subject to perturbations, such as solar radiation pressure. Two concepts, and the corresponding dynamics and control, are presented based on previous trade-off and optimisation studies. The first uses

Abstract:
<p>The dynamical evolution of the spin axis direction due to gravitational and thermal factors is examined. It is found that the spin axis variations generally are regular and relatively small for the bodies in the asteroid main belt. There are also reasons to believe that this is the case for minor objects beyond the main belt. However, it is found that these regular variations are larger when the orbital inclination of the objects is increased. This effect may explain certain features in the spin vector distribution of the main belt asteroids, not possible to explain by collisional factors.

Abstract:
Understanding asteroid collisional and dynamical evolution necessitates the use of statistical methods, since an asteroid's physical and orbital characteristics are modified throughout its lifetime by collisions and planetary perturbations. Thus, my thesis investigates evolutionary trends for asteroids by calculating and applying parameters such as collision probabilities, impact velocities, and collisional and dynamical lifetimes. I found that previous calculations of collision probabilities between pairs of asteroids on independent Keplerian orbits often yielded inconsistent results. By corr

Abstract:
The planet crossing asteroids in the inner solar system have strongly chaotic orbits and the distributions of their angular elements (longitude of ascending node, Ω; argument of perihelion, ω; and longitude of perihelion, ϖ) are often regarded as uniform random. In the last decade, the known population of these minor planets has increased by more than a factor of four, providing a sufficiently large dataset for statistical analysis of their distribution. By choosing the observationally complete set of bright objects, we quantified the level of intrinsic non-uniformities of the angular elements

Mean motion resonances (MMRs) play an important role in the formation and evolution of planetary systems and have significantly influenced the orbital properties and distribution of planets and minor planets in the solar system and in. exoplanetary systems. Most previous theoretical analyses have focused on the low- to moderate-eccentricity regime, but with new discoveries of high-eccentricity resonant minor planets and even exoplanets, there is increasing motivation to examine MMRs in the high-eccentricity regime. In this work, capturing Near-Earth Asteroids (NEAs) into Near-Earth orbits is investigated. A general optimization strategy is employed whereby a genetic algorithm is used to seed a sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method for the first step, and then nearby solutions seed further SQP runs. A large number of solutions are produced for several asteroids with varying levels of thrust, and under the effects of various perturbations. Solutions are found over a range of epochs and times of flight as opposed to many traditional methods of optimizing point solutions. This methodology proved effe

In this thesis, we study the influence of non-gravitational perturbations induced by the Yarkovsky/YORP effect and solar radiation pressure (SRP) on the orbital evolution of selected asteroids, asteroid families and pairs. Although they have found many applications in the Solar System, here, we particularly investigated how they influence the orbit of near-Earth asteroid (99942) Apophis and what is their role in the age determination of asteroid famil
