This chapter deals with metaphorical deafness in four children’s stories written by la Comtesse de Ségur between 1858 and 1865. In these texts, various characters are shown as deaf, or as victims of deafness – that is, being denied a voice. This chapter examines the extent to which such representations of characters “turning a deaf ear” deconstruct the power relations between adults and children, in the context of the process of civilization at work, which leads to a potentially subversive reading of these works.
