Abstract:
The ASTRI Mini-Array is an Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica (INAF) project to build and operate an array of nine Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) at the Teide Astronomical Observatory of the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias in Tenerife (Spain) based on a host agreement with INAF and, as such, it will be the largest IACT array until the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory starts operations. Implementing the ASTRI Mini-Array poses several challenges from technical, logistic, and management points of view. Starting from the description of the innovative technologies adopted to build the telescopes, we will discuss the solutions adopted to overcome these challenges, making the ASTRI Mini-Array a great instrument to perform deep observations of the galactic and extra-galactic sky at very high energies.

AbstractThis paper outlines the details of astrometric parameter determination of double stars from HIPPARCOS observations as prepared in the FAST consortium. Methods of parameter estimation are developed for relative astrometry and absolute astrometry. The capability of the procedures will be demonstrated using simulated observations, in describing the particular steps of a Monte Carlo simulation which have been executed at the Istituto di Astrofisica Spaziale (IAS) and at the Astronomisches Rechen–Institut (ARI).

Abstract:
Recent observations of multiple shell planetary nebulae confirm the existing subdivision into two morphological types: attached halo and detached halo. The multiple shell phenomenon appears in about twenty-five percent of round and elliptical planetary nebulae of the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias morphological survey. The analysis of these nebulae together with that of their central stars lead to the interpretation that detached halo nebulae are formed through discontinuous mass loss at the Asymptotic Giant Branch tip. The attached halo nebulae, instead, are probably produced via dynamical nebular shaping.

Abstract:
As part of a high resolution (0.55Å) spectroscopic survey of southern Seyfert galaxies, we observed a number of objects in the Hα region. The main goal of this survey is to study the profiles of the narrow lines in Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2 galaxies. As a by-product, one can search for and analyse weak broad components in Ha that sometimes show up when Seyfert 2 galaxies are observed with high resolution and high signal to noise. Such objects are usually classified as Seyfert 1.8 or 1.9. The search and detailed study of these objects is of great importance for characterizing the weak end of the luminosity function of active galactic nuclei (AGN). The observations were made with a two channel intensified Reticon at the Coude spectrograph of the 1.6m telescope at the Laboratorio Nacional de Astrofisica (CNPq/LNA).

Abstract:
The ASTRI (Astrofisica con Specchi a Tecnologia Replicante Italiana) program was born as a collaborative international effort led by the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) to design and realize, within the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) framework, an end-to-end prototype of the Small-Sized Telescope (SST) in a dual-mirror configuration (2M). While the activities concerning the characterization of the prototype are under completion, the program entered a new phase. With the final aim of contributing at the production of the SST telescopes for the CTAO Southern site, we started the development of nine telescopes based on the evolution of the ASTRI prototype design to work as pathfinder for the CTAO. Furthermore, together with the CHEC (Compact High Energy Camera) collaboration, the ASTRI team presented a proposal, that will be evaluated with other proposals, to deliver to CTAO the complete set of SST telescopes.

Abstract:
Con il termine energia gravitazionale si fa riferimento all'energia potenziale posseduta da un corpo dotato di massa all'interno di un campo gravitazionale. In questa trattazione presenterò una breve introduzione alla teoria del potenziale rimanendo nella teoria classica di gravitazione Newtoniana: ricaveremo l'equazione di Poisson e in seguito un'espressione per l'energia potenziale. Successivamente dedurremo il teorema del viriale, che fornisce una relazione tra alcune energie in gioco in un sistema all'equilibrio ed è un teorema estremamente importante in astrofisica e trova numerosissime applicazioni. Poi, analizzeremo il caso di singola particella che spiraleggia attorno ad un buco nero, per mostrare che nei Nuclei Galattici Attivi, Quasar e in alcuni classi di stelle binarie collassate l'estrazione dell'energia gravitazionale dal materiale che sta accrescendo su questi oggetti è un meccanismo potentissimo per la produzione di radiazione elettromagnetica ad alte energie. I calcoli ci mostreranno infatti che l'effiecienza di conversione da massa in energia può raggiungere il 40%, mentre, per confronto, l'energia prodotta dalle reazioni di fusioni nucleare, nel caso più efficiente, di idrogeno, è circa del 0:7%. Nella seconda applicazione studieremo il problema dell'instabilità di Jeans, in cui considereremo il caso di una nube molecolare sferica autogravitante il cui collasso porta alla formazione di stelle. Infine, applicheremo il teorema del viriale in astrofisica stellare, e vedremo come è utile per descriverne l'evoluzione ed altre quantità di interesse. I vari casi studiato saranno solo una breve e generale trattazione o introduzione al problema, data l'impossibilità di approfondirne i particolari che esulano dallo scopo di questo lavoro.

L'obiettivo di questa tesi è presentare alcuni effetti relativistici che si possono osservare in astrofisica. Al fine di ottenere una trattazione sufficientemente rigorosa verrà introdotta inizialmente la teoria della relatività ristretta, esaminata attraverso i postulati di Einstein e necessaria per chiarire alcune nozioni e fattori che compariranno nei capitoli successivi. Quindi verranno illustrate le caratteristiche principali del processo di radiazione di sincrotrone e dello scattering Compton inverso associati in particolare al fenomeno di Synchrotron Self-Compton derivante dalla combinazione dei due meccanismi. Infine, per avvalorare quanto descritto, negli ultimi capitoli sarà dato spazio ad alcune applicazioni astrofisiche quali i moti superluminali e i blazars, una categoria di oggetti extragalattici noti per la loro forte e persistente luminosità.

I campi magnetici rivestono un ruolo fondamentale in astrofisica in un vasto numero di fenomeni e sono presenti in una grande quantità di circostanze. Il seguente elaborato ha lo scopo di analizzare come il campo magnetico influenzi la propagazione di onde elettromagnetiche in un plasma ( un gas ionizzato e globalmente neutro) e valutare quale sia il ruolo del campo magnetico nei meccanismi di accelerazione delle particelle, arrivando a descrivere i fenomeni che permottono ad alcune particelle di raggiungere energie elevatissime. A tale scopo nel primo capitolo si introducono i principi della magnetoidrodinamica facendo riferimento alle approssimazioni necessarie per studiare le interazioni fra campo magnetico e fluidi astrofisici. Nei capitoli successivi vengono illustrati i meccanismi della rotazione di Faraday (capitolo 2.) e dell’accelerazione di Fermi (Capitolo 3.). Il capitolo finale presenta due analisi relative rispettivamente al contributo della rotazione di Faraday nella magnetosfera di una pulsar e al ruolo dell’accelerazione di Fermi nella produzione di raggi cosmici ad energie elevate.

Abstract:
Con energia gravitazionale si intende l'energia potenziale posseduta da un corpo massivo che si trova all'interno di un campo gravitazionale. Si introdurrà la gravità partendo dalle leggi del moto che racchiudono la prima definizione Newtoniana di forza, base fisica per la comprensione dell'argomento. Si definirà poi il potenziale gravitazionale prestando particolare attenzione al caso dei sistemi sferici, essendo un'approssimazione molto utile in astrofisica. Si otterranno la velocità di fuga ed il raggio di Schwarzschild. Si ricaverà poi il teorema del viriale per lo studio dell'energia di un sistema all'equilibrio. Si arriverà a esplicitare il teorema in forma scalare per sistemi autogravitanti. Considerando la vastità di applicazioni astrofisiche riguardanti tale argomento si analizzeranno solo alcune di queste. In particolare si tratterà l'instabilità gravitazionale di Jeans e si confronteranno forza gravitazionale e forza di radiazione per ottenere la luminosità di Eddington. Infine si utilizzeranno i teoremi di Newton per il potenziale gravitazionale di un guscio sferico per produrre la curva di rotazione di una galassia a spirale.

I campi magnetici nel nostro Universo ricoprono un fondamentale ruolo nella nascita e nello sviluppo delle strutture cosmiche così come noi le osserviamo. Si pensi ad esempio ad oggetti "comuni" in ambito astrofisico che presentano un magnetismo "proprio", stelle, pianeti, galassie, o a fenomeni come i venti stellari, i getti nei nuclei galattici attivi, le aurore osservate da Terra: essi hanno una precisa morfologia ed evoluzione che dipende fortemente dalla struttura dei campi magnetici che sono ivi presenti. Eppure, nonostante la notevole importanza e onnipresenza, non si hanno ancora certezze sulla loro origine specialmente su larga scala, per cui rimangono aperti numerosi interrogativi e teorie a riguardo. Data l'enorme varietà di ambiti toccati dai fenomeni magnetici, la seguente tesi non affronta con completezza ogni singolo argomento ad essi legato. Nella prima parte di questa trattazione viene illustrato il comportamento del plasma magnetizzato introducendo i principi della magnetoidrodinamica (Capitolo 1), per poi passare alla seconda parte in cui invece vengono esposti i principali effetti astrofisici che permettono di misurare (o stimare) l'intensità del campo magnetico e di studiarne la morfologia. Si parla pertanto del principale meccanismo di emissione dovuto al magnetismo, ovvero la radiazione di sincrotrone (Capitolo 2), della propagazione di onde elettromagnetiche in un plasma con particolare riferimento alla rotazione di Faraday (Capitolo 3), valutando la misura di dispersione e di rotazione, e infine dell'effetto Zeeman (Capitolo 4) considerando anche la presenza di un campo magnetico interno alla particella. Nel capitolo dedicato al sincrotrone vi è poi un esempio astrofisico basato su una radiosorgente, J1511+0518, che espone le possibilità di utilizzo della condizione di equipartizione per la determinazione del campo magnetico di queste particolari strutture.

Abstract:
Il seguente elaborato si prefigge di trattare alcuni fenomeni relativistici presenti in Astrofisica. Gli strumenti necessari sono forniti in Appendice, con la trattazione dettagliata su come una carica accelerata emetta radiazione, mentre nel primo capitolo vengono presentati i rudimenti della teoria della Relatività Speciale, elaborata da Einstein nel 1905. Da qui segue la descrizione del fenomeno principe connesso, ovvero il Relativistic Beaming, spiegato mediante l’utilizzo della radiazione di Sincrotrone: processo che emette principalmente in banda radio e che coinvolge moltissimi oggetti astrofisici tra cui Resti di Supernova, Radiogalassie, fotoni della Radiazione Cosmica di Fondo, emissione da Active Galactic Nuclei e molti altri. In dettaglio sono riportati i Moti Superluminali, fenomeno per cui una sorgente di radiazione appare muoversi a velocità nettamente superiore alla velocità della luce. Un intero capitolo, poi, è stato dedicato alla trattazione del fenomeno dei Jetted AGN, una calsse di galassie attive che presenta getti ultrarelativistici, talmente estesi che in alcuni casi occupano una regione di spazio ben oltre la galassia ospitante. I meccanismi legati alla loro origine non sono ancora ben chiari, ma sono state avanzate ipotesi concrete e plausibili. Infine, viene presentata la grande teoria della Relatività Generale, l’unione di sistemi di gravità e sistemi accelerati, sviluppata da Albert Einstein tra il 1907 e il 1916, con la pubblicazione ufficiale. In questo caso, il fenomeno del Lensing Gravitazionale rende concreta la deflessione dei raggi luminosi in presenza di oggetti massivi. Esistono tantissimi altri campi in cui è possibile osservare un perfetto connubio tra Relatività e Astrofisica (ad esempio nel caso delle particelle ultraenergetiche dei Raggi Cosmici, nel caso del profilo relativistico della riga del Ferro nel disco degli AGN oppure i diversi fenomeni che coinvolgono l’emissione di Inverse Compton come la catastrofe Compton).

Questo elaborato espone le caratteristiche principali dell'effetto Doppler e l'applicazione del suddetto in vari ambiti del settore astrofisico. La derivazione della formule è divisa nel caso classico in cui si studia il fenomeno rispetto alle onde acustiche, e il nel caso relativistico nel quale si studia l'effetto sulle onde elettromagnetiche. Le applicazioni astrofisiche prese in considerazione sono le seguenti: Redshift e Legge di Hubble nell'ambito cosmologico; allargamento Doppler delle linee spettrali nell'ambito della spettroscopia astronomica; stelle binarie spettroscopiche e MASER nell'ambito del calcolo di grandezze fisiche attraverso la determinazione della velocità radiale tramite lo shift delle righe spettrali.

Abstract:
In ambito astrofisico i campi magnetici ricoprono un ruolo importante nelle più differenti situazioni. Il seguente elaborato ha lo scopo di approfondire ed analizzare uno tra tutti gli innumerevoli casi: il magnetismo solare. Nel primo capitolo si intoducono quelli che sono i principi della magnetoidrodinamica e in particolare si fa riferimento alle approsimazioni necessarie per lo studio delle interazioni dei campi magnetici con i fluidi astrofisici delle strutture stellari, che, date le elevate temperature a cui si trovano e le loro caratteristiche fisiche, sono sempre trattabili come plasmi. Nel secondo capitolo si illustrano i modelli principali che sono alla base degli aspetti morfologici più importanti delle strutture magnetiche fotosferiche e della loro evoluzione temporale. Si passa, quindi, a descrivere i fenomeni più spettacolari e di maggior interesse astrofisico, che hanno luogo nei diversi strati dell’atmosfera del Sole come conseguenza di questa intensa e ciclica attività magnetica: macchie solari, brillamenti, protuberanze ed eruzioni di massa coronale.

Abstract:
Nowadays, lots of opportunities are offered to students to fly their own experiment on board of rockets or balloons. Thanks to those opportunities, young scientists have a chance to experience hands-on project and even to find a vocation: pursuing experimentations on-board of flight missions. However, it can appear, for these young professionals, that flying on board sounding rockets or stratospheric balloons is hard to access or to afford. Yet the opportunities exist and are waiting for them! Space educational programmes enable students to learn, in a short period of time, all phases of a scientific project; a unique chance to experience a full project cycle from objectives’ definition to the publication of the results. Thus, students define mission requirements, design, manufacture, test and finally launch their own experiment! On REXUS/BEXUS [1] for example, students experience an end-to-end project with all disciplines required by a Space project (science, mechanics, electronics, software, system engineering, management, finances, outreach). The concretisation of all efforts occurs during the launch campaign, organised at SSC Esrange (Sweden). The campaign is always an intense period for the participants: high level of concentration, pressure, stress but a massive work that pays off during the flight and after. Usually, this key event enables ideas and improvements to pop up; a prolific event to define the next step of an experiment, maybe on a future mission! Many students start their professional career after the campaign. Despite new ideas and the drive to pursue, a common idea of these young professionals is that it is hard to access to flight opportunities on sounding rockets or stratospheric balloons while not being a student anymore: too expensive to finance a campaign? too complex to organise? who to contact? Many questions that it is time to answer. Yes, it is possible! At SSC, we enable access to stratospheric balloons, sounding rockets and drop tests on a cost-efficient entrance level or fully funded through national and international programmes. One of these examples is the EOSTRE mission [2] (Experiment on Outliving Microorganisms under Stratospheric Environment), developed by FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences (Germany) in collaboration with the University of Oulu (Finland); a former BEXUS team that developed its own balloon mission, launched successfully from Esrange in March 2020. Several former students from REXUS/BEXUS have joined professional opportunities, such as the HEMERA [3] programme, with the experiments GRASS from INAF (Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica) and STRAINS (Sapienza University, Rome) and launched it from Esrange in September 2021. Today, SSC is also offering ride share opportunities on sounding rockets with the programme SubOrbital Express [4]; first successful launch was in June 2019 on board MASER 14 (S1X-1). Opportunities are still open for the next missions in fall 2022 (S1X-3) and in 2023 (S1X-4)
