Full textAlthough the earliest depictions of Faustus portray him as an astrologer, very few publications to date have touched on the role of astrology in the life of this infamous character. Parallel to the decline in astrological sciences beginning in the seventeenth century, post-Scientific Revolution depictions of Faust have deemphasized astrology as a primary pursuit of the figure. I examine the status of astrology in four versions of the Faust(us) myth: The anonymous Historia von D. Johann Fausten and its English translation/adaptation as The English Faust Book, Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Faust, and Thomas Mann's Doktor Faustus. I argue that the decline in the status of astrology corresponds to historically weakening belief in the analogy of microcosm and macrocosm as epistemologically relevant and analyze the implication of the Faust figure in genuinely modem quandaries of skepticism and aesthetic representation.

Full textThis thesis describes the work of astrologers in contemporary Banaras and it is based both ethnographic material and hindi and sanskrit astrological literature. In the first chapter, the study aims to point out the ideological constructs that are behind the promoting of astrology in contemporary India and that shape the professional identity of Banaras astrologers. Following chapters present and analyze astrologers at work : the divinatory devices they use (horoscope, chiromancy, reading of almanac, etc. ) ; the advisory sessions and the relationship they all have with clients ; the order to remove the bad influence of planets (rirual practices, precious stones ans tantric amilets). The combining of scientific and religious discourses, the concepts of "truth", "person" and "destiny" are the main theoretical issues of this study

Full textThe " Recueil des plus celèbres astrologues" of Simon De Phares, composed between 1494 and 1498 by an astrologer of Charles VIII, king of France, is the most important source of ousknowledge upon astrologers and astronomers of medieval Europe, in a historiographical point of view. The originality of the "recueil" is founded upon the originality of the person of Simon De Phares, professional astrologer, in a time where most of astrologers where merely physicians. The catalogue of the library of the author-11 volumes partially condemned by the faculty of theology of Paris, and 25 volumes keeped in the bibliotheque nationale of Paris-is very important to understand his methods of work. About 180 sources can be recensed. But Simon used largely a little group of historiographical sources. The fout part of the "recueil" is totally mythical, but the end is very useful. The critical edition is founded upon the unique m anuscrit, partialy autograph. It shows the six different periods of redaction, tries to identify the sources and the personnages, and to mention the 315 personnages who seem to be fancied

Full textIn the saga of Josephin Péladan, which is intitulated the Latine Decadence, the magus Mérodack is the central character. Incarnation of the author, he regroups around him others characters, auxiliary magus, multiple facets of himself. This character Mérodack is, in the works of Joséphin Péladan, the revealer-developer of a decadent world, and, at the same time the being who wants offer a model, an attitude to take up: the magic, which is the science of the ancient magus, and an intellectual style to dominate the world by the literary creation. At a period where nobody believes the magic, the character of the magus is the most beautiful image of the writer
Bringel, Pauline. "Une polémique religieuse à la cour perse : le De gestis in Perside : Histoire du texte, édition critique et traduction." Paris 4, 2007. http://www.theses.fr/2007PA040272.
Full textThe De gestis in Perside (CPG III 6968), which contents a religious polemic at the Persian court between Pagans, Jews and Christians, has been edited in 1899 by E. Bratke. This dissertation presents a new critical edition of the work with a first complete french translation. Since a short form of the text has been discovered in a manuscript of the Vatican Library, the question of its date and place has to be reformulated. It seems, in particular, that the original aim of the discussion was not anti-Jewish. Aphroditian’s Tale must have emerged in a Christian community – Hierapolis in all likelihood – that wished to possess a picture of Christ capable of competing with that of Edessa. The context of emergence of the whole polemic remains unclear. Both Aphroditian’s Tale and part of the anti-Jewish argument have found an echo in later works. The Tale has moreover been translated in Slavic, with names of the Magi which proved to come from a Greek manuscript of Mount Athos
