Abstract:
This article provides a bilingual perspective about literacy development in deaf students and uses the bilingual perspective to recommend effective teaching strategies for this group of students with special needs. In the case of deaf students, however, the bilingualism is not between two oral languages, but between American Sign Language (ASU and written English. The analogy of Deaf education to bilingual education is imperfect, as the article shows, but nonetheless helpful in suggesting educational strategies. One difference from classic bilingual education is the difference in mode of the two languages, with ASL using a haptic mode (signing) and written English using a visual mode. Another difference is the nontraditional nature of Deaf communities. Although ASL communities certainly have histories and traditions, Deaf individuals rarely learn these from family ties or immersion in a kinship-based culture that "speaks" ASL. Despite these differences in language mode and cultural transmission, teaching deaf students benefits from many strategies usually associated with the teaching of second languages, including fostering motivation, developing self concepts, understanding language development, knowing elements of a student's first language, allowing judicious translation,focusing on comprehension rather than syntax, and incorporating cultural values and native speakers-signers as role models.

Abstract:
Background: Aphasia is a life alerting deficit that affects up to 40% of people living with stroke. Barriers to communication ultimately impacts the care aphasic patients receive, as well as functional recovery. The Canadian Stroke Best Practice Recommendations suggest early and frequent language interventions to improve patients with aphasia quality of life, mood, and social outcomes. Methods: A supported conversation (SC) program (colloquially named The Aphasia Club) was implemented on the Acute Stroke Unit (ASU). The program included aphasia awareness and assessment training, as well as creation of an aphasia tool kit and discipline specific aphasia-friendly resources. Staff were encouraged to complete a 1-hour independent course on SC through the Aphasia Institute. Speech and language pathologists (SLP) offered an additional 30-minute in-person teaching session with interdisciplinary practice professionals. Following SLP assessment, personalized communication profiles were created for patients with aphasia to help staff understand the most useful strategies for communication. Results: More then 50 interprofessional staff members took SC training. Staff reported increased levels of knowledge and confidence when communicating with aphasic patients. Conclusions: A supported communication program was successfully implemented on an ASU. Planning appropriate communication interventions can assist interdisciplinary professionals in their ability to support patients through their stroke journey.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to explain Korean and Javanese subject honorific and identify its similarities and differences. To accomplish it, this research was conducted using literature review method. Data related to the Javanese language were taken from two Javanese drama scripts, namely Mak Ana Asu Mlebu Ngomah and Bantul Sangsaya Pinunjul, and Javanese drama titled Sri Ngilang by George Quinn. Korean language data was taken from television drama, Misaeng and Fight for My Way. Based on the analysis that has been carried out, despite the difference of the honorific system of Korean dan Javanese, Javanese has subject honorific as described in the Korean honorific system. Both languages use words that have honorific meaning to honor the subject and use words that are usually used for the animal to dishonor the subject of the sentence. The difference between both languages on subject honorific is Korean subject honorific is mainly realized grammatically, whereas in Javanese is realized lexically. In addition, there are rules from the Korean government regarding the use of one type of subject honorific, abjonbeob, whereas in Javanese there are no rules related to the use of speech level.

Desde las primeras traducciones al japonés del Quijote a lo largo del siglo xix, la obra cervantina ha pasado a formar parte de la cultura de masas nipona. Como manifestación de este fenómeno, el manga ha absorbido la imagen del caballero andante adaptándola a los condicionantes estéticos del género historietístico y entreverándola con su historia y su folklore. Asu vez, el manga ha sido exportado a Occidente, donde lectores y artistas manejan su particular estilo con comodidad. Así, Don Quijote funciona, unido al manga, como puente bidireccional entre Japón y España. Fuera de la novela, la universalidad del clásico se abrirá paso hacia la viñeta y hallará su impulso, frente a lo académico, en el ámbito popular.

Abstract:
The German Work Role Functioning Questionnaire – on the evaluation of its measurement properties Objectives: Measures to maintain the employability of workers should also take their functional ability into account. The Work Role Functioning Questionnaire (WRFQ), which is available in several languages, is suitable for such an assessment. A validated version in German had been missing until now. The 27-item questionnaire was culturally adapted from the Dutch version of WRFQ 2.0 and used with a heterogeneous sample of employees with the aim of psychometrically validating the overall scale and the four subscales. Methods: After adaptation, members of a commercial online access panel with a wide variety of occupations were recruited (T0: n = 653). Two follow-ups were conducted to assess further psychometric properties (T1: n = 66, T2: n = 95). We examined the 1) structural, 2) convergent and 3) discriminant validity using exploratory factor analysis, 4) floor and ceiling effects, as well as 5) the internal consistency, 6) reproducibility, and 7) responsiveness. Results: Measurement properties were found to be good, with the exception of responsiveness and structural validity. In the exploratory factor analysis, satisfactory replicability was found for three of the four subscales (mental and social demands, physical demands and flexibility demands, but not scheduling and output demands). Conclusions: The WRFQ is aimed at the fit between demands and the individual and thus at the ability to participate. With the development and validation of a German-language version, the scale can be used in practice, e.g. in interventions aimed at secondary prevention to maintain the ability to work, tertiary prevention to support a successful return to work, or the identification of employees with declining functional ability. The limitations of the study (limited representativeness of online access panels and poor replicability of the fourth subscale) require further research. Based on a 300MW Oxy-fuel pulverized coal boiler,this paper established a dynamic mathematical model of air separation system distillation column, and compiled simulation procedure with the Fortran language on the platform of IMMS. With distillation column as the object of the research, it carried on a disturbance experiment about the outlet air flow of purifier and extractable volume of liquid nitrogen in lower tower. The results demonstrate that when the outlet air flow of purifier decreases, the nitrogen purity in gas is reduced by 0.39%, and the oxygen purity in liquid is reduced by 1.5%;when the outlet air flow of purifier is constant and extractable volume of liquid nitrogen decreases, the nitrogen purity in gas is increased by 0.2%, and the oxygen purity in liquid is increased by 0.06%.

This study investigates the effect of different prosodic variables (e.g., pitch, syllable duration, presence of pitch accent and intonation boundary) and non-prosodic variables (e.g., type of verbal argument, presence of clause boundary, part-of-speech and number of syllables) on the perception of prominence in spontaneous Estonian. Following the methodology of Rapid Prosody Transcription, 396 randomly selected speech fragments from ten speakers were presented over the internet to 51 prosodically untrained listeners, whose task was to highlight the words they heard as prominent. The same dataset was annotated for intonational pitch accents and boundary tones by two experts. The results demonstrate that the strongest predictors of prominence perception are the pitch and duration of stressed syllables together with the presence of a pitch accent while the non-prosodic variables are somewhat weaker. The study corroborates earlier findings in that the perceptual salience in spoken language processing depends largely on the acoustic signal-based cues. Kokkuvõte. Nele Ots ja Eva Liina Asu: Prominentsuse taju eesti keeles: prosoodia kiirtranskribeerimise uurimus eesti keele kõnelejatega. Artikkel uurib eri prosoodiliste tunnuste (põhitoon, rõhulise silbi kestus, tooni aktsendi ja intonatsioonipiiri olemasolu) ning mitteprosoodiliste tunnuste (verbi argument, klausipiiri olemasolu, sõnaliik ja silpide arv) mõju prominentsuse tajule spontaanses eesti keeles. Lähtudes prosoodia kiirtranskriptsiooni (Rapid Prosody Transcription, RPT) metodoloogiast, esitati 396 juhuslikult valitud spontaanse kõne lõiku interneti teel 51-le prosoodia valdkonnas koolitamata kuulajale, kelle ülesandeks oli tekstis esile tõsta sõnad, mis kuuldusid neile rõhulisena. Kaks kõneprosoodia uurijat transkribeerisid samades kõne lõikudes tooniaktsendid ja intonatsioonipiirid. Tulemused näitavad, et prominentsuse taju tähtsaimad ennustajad on tooniaktsent, põhitoon ning silbi kestus. Mitteprosoodilised tunnused mõjutavad prominentsuse taju mõnevõrra vähem. Katse tulemused kinnitavad varasemate uurimuste järeldust, et tajutud prominentsus sõltub eelkõige akustilistest signaalipõhistest tunnustest. <p class="apa">The present study aims to find out the relationship between English Language proficiency, self-esteem, and academic achievement of the students in Abu Dhabi University (ADU). The variables were analyzed using ‘t’ test, chi-squire and Pearson’s product moment correlation. In addition, Self-rating scale, Self-esteem inventory and Language proficiency tests were used to measure the variables. The data were collected from 200 male and female students from Abu Dhabi University. The study could not find out any positive relationship among the variables. It is also revealed that language fluency (IELTS) has no direct impact on the ADU students’ self-esteem scores and academic achievement (GPA).</p>

AbstractThe development of an African native language-based programming language, using Yoruba as a case study, is envisioned. Programming languages based on the lexicons of indigenous African languages are rare to come by unlike those based on Asian and / or European languages. Availability of programming languages based on lexicons of African indigenous language would facilitate comprehension of problem-solving processes using computer by indigenous learners and teachers as confirmed by research results. In order to further assess the relevance, usefulness and needfulness of such a programming language, a preliminary needs assessment survey was carried out. The needs assessment was carried out through design of a structured questionnaire which was administered to 130 stakeholders in computer profession and computer education; including some staffers and learners of some primary, secondary and tertiary educational institutions in Oyo and Osun states of Nigeria, Africa. The responses to the questionnaire were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The analysis of the responses to the questionnaire shows that 89% of the respondents to the questionnaire expressed excitement and willingness to program or learn programming in their mother tongue-based programming language, if such a programming language is developed. This result shows the high degree of relevance, usefulness and needfulness of a native language-based programming language as well as the worthwhileness of embarking on development of such a programming language.

Abstract Davidson (2013) shows that in American Sign Language (ASL), conjunction and disjunction can be expressed by the same general use coordinator (cf. mary drink tea coord coffee ‘Mary drank tea and coffee; Mary drank tea or coffee.’). To derive these two meanings, she proposes an alternative semantic analysis whereby the two interpretations arise through universal or existential quantification over a set of alternatives licensed by (non-)linguistic cues, such as contexts and prosodic or lexical material. This paper provides supportive evidence for Davidson’s analysis from two other languages, Japanese and Japanese Sign Language. These languages are shown to employ general use coordination similar to that in ASL, but the general use coordinators in the three languages differ in one important respect: the locality of lexical elements that induce a disjunctive meaning. It is suggested that this cross-linguistic variation can be attributed to language-specific properties that concern the Q-particle discussed in Uegaki (2014, 2018).

Over the last several years, one area of sentence processing research that has received considerable attention is how native speakers resolve structural ambiguities while reading, as in Someone shot the servant of the actress who was on the balcony (e.g., Cuetos & Mitchell 1988). Cross-linguistic research on this kind of ambiguous relative clause (RC) attachment has revealed that speakers of some languages prefer to attach the RC who was on the balcony to the first noun phrase (the servant), whereas speakers of other languages prefer attachment to the second noun phrase (the actress). From the perspective of bilingual sentence processing, research on RC attachment can provide insight into a number of important issues related to language transfer, language attrition, and processing efficiency. The present study, therefore, seeks to build upon some of these lines of research by examining the on-line parsing strategies among native speakers of Basque (N = 17) on two self-paced reading tasks in Basque and Spanish. Our purpose was to investigate which parsing routines these bilinguals utilized for each language in order to determine whether they maintained separate strategies or adopted one strategy for both languages. Analyses of reading times at critical regions in experimental sentences suggest that this group of bilinguals employed a single parsing strategy in Basque and Spanish. The findings are discussed within recent proposals of monolingual and bilingual sentence processing.

<p>This study focus on differences grammatical between transitive and intransitif verb forms Indonesian and Japanese that analyzed by comparing it. This study used contrastive analysis, of all the elements lingual, in this research the object of this study is the morphological form of transitive and intransitif verbs in Indonesian and Japanese. After analysed with contrastive how the shape of transitive and intransitif verbs from both languages, then concluded as the final result of this study. The results of this study show that, (1) transitive verbs in Japanese need the object in the sentence and intransitif verbs in Japanese doesn’t need the object in a sentence. Then, Indonesian transitive verbs are verbs that require object. (2) The transitive verb in Japanese is patterned (subject) wa / ga (object) o (transitive verb-tadoushi). Then, the intransitif verb in Japanese patterned (subject) ga (intransitif verb-jidoushi). In Indonesian sentence patterns transitive and intransitif verbs S + P, which distinguishes the two verbs that are on each object. (3) in Japanese transitive and intransitif verbs have endings as markers of each verb. Namely: a) -aru (tran), -eru (intran), b) -aru (intran), u (tran), c) -reru (intra), -sU (tran), d) -reru (intra- ), -ru (tran), e) - arareru (intran), u (trans), f) -ru (intran), -sU (tran), g) -eru (intran), -asu (tran), h) -u (intran), -asu (tran), i) -iru (intra), -osu (tran), and j) -u (intran), -eru (tran). While in Indonesian for a transitive verb is marked with the suffix Me-, memper-, memper-kan, me-i, memper-I, me-kan and verba intransitif marked by basic verbs, and suffix ber-, ber-kan, ter-, ke-an.</p><p> </p><p>Penelitian ini berfokus terhadap perbedaan gramatikal bentuk verba transitif dan intransitif bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa Jepang yang dianalisis dengan cara membandingkan bentuk verba transitif dan intransitif bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa Jepang. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode analisis kontrastif, dari semua unsur lingual kajian linguistic dalam penelitian ini yang menjadi objek kajian adalah morfologi bentuk verba transitif dan intransitif dalam bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa Jepang. Setelah dikontrastifkan bagaimana bentuk verba transitif dan verba intransitif dari kedua bahasa tersebut kemudian ditarik kesimpulan sebagai hasil akhir dari penelitian ini. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa, (1) verba transitif dalam bahasa Jepang memerlukan objek penderita pada kalimat tersebut dan verba intransitif dalam bahasa Jepang tidak perlu objek penderita dalam sebuah kalimat. Sedangkan verba transitif dalam bahasa Indonesia adalah verba yang membutuhkan objek. (2) Verba transitif dalam bahasa Jepang ini berpola (subjek) wa/ga (objek) o (kata kerja transitif-tadoushi). Sedangkan verba intransitif dalam bahasa Jepang berpola (subyek) ga (kata kerja intransitif-jidoushi). Sedangkan dalam bahasa Indonesia pola kalimat verba transitif dan intransitif S+P, yang membedakan dari kedua verba tersebut hanyalah pada objek masing-masing. (3) dalam bahasa Jepang verba transitif dan intransitif memiliki akhiran sebagai penanda masing-masing verba. Yaitu:a) -aru (tran), -eru (intran), b) –aru (intran), -u (tran), c) –reru (intra), -su (tran), d) –reru (intra), -ru (tran), e) – arareru (intran), -u (trans), f) –ru (intran), -su (tran), g) –eru (intran), -asu (tran), h) –u (intran), -asu (tran), i) –iru (intra), -osu (tran), dan j) –u (intran), -eru (tran). Abstract:
Sign languages display the same linguistic characteristics as oral languages and utilize the same language services. Sign language processing solutions provide a communication link for persons with hearing impairments and healthy persons. Without these icons' ability to understand, deaf children experience several challenges in learning social norms and cannot meet adults to exchange knowledge. Parents find it challenging to express their messages to their deaf children and not hear their children. This paper focused on establishing Urdu sign language to reduce the communication barrier between ordinary folks and physically impaired people. The present study observed the Urdu Sign Language in deaf children. In this paper, the process of detecting Urdu sign language alphabets is proposed. All the 37 alphabets are identified by using KNN, ANN, and SVM classifiers. Through these alphabets, the teachers at schools and the parents at home can communicate efficiently with their deaf children. Histogram of Gradient technique is used for feature extraction. Urdu Alphabetic are identified. Maximum accuracy is obtained by using a KNN classifier that was 99, which is a significant contribution. Our proposed results are comparable to the state of the art techniques.

The main goal of the research presented here is to study the Inga speech community. Inga is a Quechuan language, and its community is spread around the south of Colombia; the study tackles the features of language contact, Spanish/Inga or amongst any other languages known and used by the members of the community. We shall pay special attention to those communities around Sibundoy Valley (Putumayo), Atante (Nariño), Bota Caucana (Cauca), as well as to those already settled in the large Colombian urban areas such as Bogotá and Cali. Our main goal is to render an adequate characterization of this indigenous community: its territorial situation, its sociolinguistic characteristics, the degree and type of bilingualism amongst its members, the survival of the community members and of the language itself, the use and distribution of the language across communicative fields, especially in a context of diglosia, multilingualism and multiculturality typical of and intrinsic to Colombia, and the study of language awareness and sociolinguistic attitudes of this community.

The language style or known the Figure of Speech is an expression of feelings that have deep meaning for others. This research was conducted to look at the style of the language in the lyrics of popular songs by Syahrini. The analuses covered were stylistic repetition, alliteration, assonance, parallelism, “Simploke”, and redundancy. Analysis methods of this research used descriptive qualitative method. Based on the analysis of the lyrics of a popular song Syahrini explained that the style of repetitipn languange is a classification of words in a few times to amplify the pressure. We can see the lyrics of the songs, entitled: My Lovely, Aku Tak Biasa, Bohong, Kau Yang Memilih Aku, Semua Karena Cinta, Sesuatu, Cinta Tapi Gengsi, Pusing Setengah Mati, Aku Tak Biasa (Cover Alda) dan Kau Cetarkan Hatiku. While the other songs on the album are Tatapan Cinta, Kau Sengaja, Kau Sengaja, Sang Pencipta, Tak Terganti, Aku Pergi, Tak Memilih, Memilih Aku, Kau Bohong, Taubatlah Taubat, Ya Robbi, Cinta Terakhir, dan Jangan Memilih Aku. In the alliteration style is a kind of language style that is concrete use of the word tahat have teh begining of the same consonant. In stylistic assonance of vocal style is similar in the wording. Abstract:
Many Ethnic Community Languages (ECLs) in Tanzania are demographically and socioculturally pressured mainly by Kiswahili and English to a lesser extent. The ECLs which were previously used in elementary education, local administration and religious activities currently do not have any place in any official domain and thus are limited to home and other few immediate domains. Due to this unequal coexistence of the languages, many ECLs are considered endangered, calling for efforts from stakeholders to prevent the death of such a precious cultural heritage. By documenting the social aspects of Asu personal names, this paper is a contribution to such initiatives like The Languages of Tanzania Project aiming at documenting Tanzanian ECLs in every possible area and means. The paper used participant observation, in-depth interview and self-intuition to investigate personal names of a Bantu speaking people called Vaasu (Asu) of Northern Tanzania, considering naming as an important aspect of the society. The paper looked at Asu names within the purview of linguistic anthropology considering names as not being arbitrary labels but sociocultural tags that have sociocultural functions and meanings. By using thematic analysis technique, the paper analysed and discussed the typology of the names including family names, circumstantial names, theophorous names, flora and fauna names, to mention but a few. The paper further examined the changing nature of Asu naming system and practice as dictated by cultural contact mainly with Swahili and Christian/ western culture. The paper eventually recommends for further investigation on issues surrounding naming practices and strategic measures to prevent this important African cultural resource.

Developing speaking skills for foreign language learners is challenging. Whenever they speak foreign languages, they often encounter communication problems because of their limited grammatical and discourse competence. To overcome the problems, language learners need to employ communication strategies. Previous studies stated that these strategies were valuable for learners in speaking a target language; however, they mainly examined the students’ use of communication strategies in general speaking situations. Thus, the present study aims to explore types and levels of communication strategies used by Thai business students majoring in accounting and to investigate their communication problems during an English online job interview test. The participants were 35 Thai undergraduates. The 35-item self-report communication strategy questionnaire and a semi-structured interview were used to collect the data. The data was analyzed through the IBM SPSS statistical analysis software and the content analysis. The findings indicated that the participants were strategic users. The overall mean of the participants’ communication strategy use was at a high level ( = 3.59). The most frequently used communication strategies were strategies for understanding interlocutor’s messages (UIM) which was at a high level ( = 3.84). The participants selected to use nonverbal language the most such as body language ( = 4.45). The main problems which they experienced during the English online job interview test were unknown vocabulary and listening problems. Furthermore, most participants preferred attending an online interview test to an onsite interview test.

The recurrent neural network (RNN) application when it comes to audio and speech processing in the case of Indonesian-language voice data is rarely done now. This is important because Indonesian languages have different characteristics from foreign languages. So in this case we try to evaluate a number of methods in RNN to make speech synthesis in Indonesian. In this research we use objective measurements, the results we get that LSTM generally produces better sound quality than GRU. While the derivative of GRU, MGU2 gets the best results in the model training time.

The UNESCO Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022-2032)is a good opportunity for shining a light on language endangerment in Australia. In this paper, I argue that many causes of endangerment can be traced back to a relocation of speakers of Indigenous languages from their traditional land. A case in point is the endangered language Miriwoong. The analysis of a case study with the Miriwoong people will demonstrate that both their traditional educational practices and several current revitalisation projects rely on access to traditional Country. Miriwoong is no longer transmitted in natural contexts, i.e. it is not spoken and learned in the family home. Thus, in order to achieve the goal of countering endangerment, the community needs the support that Australian governments can provide via the mainstream education system. For such projects to be effective, self-determination needs to be part of any policies concerning formal education. This ensures that traditional beliefs and practices, such as teaching ‘on Country’, can be properly incorporated.

This paper discusses the efforts of a group of ELT instructors at a private Syrian university, Arab International University (AIU), to modify students' attitudes towards general English remedial courses at the Foreign Languages Center (FLC) of the university. After analyzing the results of a questionnaire distributed to clarify the students' linguistic needs and assess their motivation, it was concluded that most students preferred interactive language exercises to theoretical text book activities. Thus, the instructors have resorted to practical methods embodied in establishing an English language club that seeks to fulfill students' needs. The club focused on two motivational activities: reading tabloids and making documentary short films. Consequently, regular weekly sessions were organized to hold these activities. All in all, students' attitudes were greatly enhanced and have become more positive. It was also noted that the students have become self-motivated to the extent of generating new and original ideas that will enrich the English language club at AIU. Furthermore, the students were able to achieve remarkable enhancement on their linguistic skills especially those of reading, writing and speaking in addition to acquiring and improving other personal skills e.g. team work, organizing and planning projects, and communicating ideas via oral presentations.

The aim was to reveal the things behind the form and content of Sori Gusti's poetry text by using the strategy of reading Derrida's Deconstruction. The use of multilinguality in the text to decentering in the use of the concept of language, between local languages and foreign languages, as well as between other language opposition. The reversal and obscurity of the opposition of the language led to the reconciliation of culture represented in the text as a form of diversity. In terms of typography poetry, negation or obscurity of the center (decentering) through the use of the form of speech spoken by “aku lirik” as an inferior voice. At conventions generally speeches had a vertical concept, the speech of the leader to his people, then obscured by a horizontal concept (equivalent line). The vertical-horizontal conception was then formulated to reveal the political content behind the text, neo-imperialism of Orde Baru regim. AbstrakTulisan ini membahas dekonstruksi struktur linguistik, bentuk, dan isi dalam kumpulan puisi Sori Gusti karya Darmanto Jatman. Tujuannya untuk mengungkap hal ihwal di balik bentuk dan isi teks puisi Sori Gusti dengan menggunakan strategi pembacaan Dekonstruksi Derrida. Pemanfaatan multilingualitas dalam teks untuk meniadakan pusat (decentering) dalam penggunaan konsep bahasa, baik antara bahasa lokal dengan bahasa asing, maupun antaroposisi bahasa lainnya. Pembalikan dan pengaburan oposisi bahasa tersebut mengarah pada pendamaian budaya yang terepresentasi dalam teks sebagai bentuk keberagaman. Dari segi tipografi puisi dan peniadaan atau pengaburan pusat (decentering) melalui penggunaan bentuk pidato yang dituturkan oleh aku lirik sebagai suara inferior . Pada konvensi umumnya pidato memiliki konsep vertikal, tuturan pemimpin kepada rakyatnya, kemudian dikaburkan dengan konsep horisontal (garis setara). Konsepsi vertikal-horisontal kemudian diformulasikan untuk mengungkap muatan politis di balik teks, yakni neoimperialisme Orde Baru.
