In Australia, the equivalent of a US VIX indicator has recently become available. In response, we consider whether the information captured in the implied volatility of options on the Australian SPI 200 Futures index is superior to the information content of a generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) approach to volatility prediction. We conclude that the implied volatility of at-the-money (ATM) call options on the SPI 200 Index futures is more powerful, dominating other modes of moneyness options as well as GARCH predictions.

Introduction Astaxanthin (ASX) is carotenoid with the highest antioxidant activity in various cell types and reverse atherosclerosis. However, the roles and detailed mechanisms of ASX in atherosclerosis associated endothelial injury remains unclear. Methods In vitro atherosclerosis model was established in HUVECs by incubation with oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL). Cell viability and oxidative stress were measured. The mRNA and protein expressions of lectin-like ox-LDL receptor (LOX-1) and other related genes were determined. Results ox-LDL reduced cell viability of HUVECs, and induced oxidative stress, as evidenced by elevated cellular malondialdehyde (MDA) and decreased superoxide dismutase (SOD). Pretreatment with ASX (50, 100, 200, and 400 μM) markedly reversed the reduction in cell viability and an increase in migration of HUVECs induced by ox-LDL (50 μg/mL). ASX attenuated the increase in the endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndMT) process, as evidenced by increased CD31 and decreased α-SMA and vimentin proteins by ASX treatment in HUVECs. Furthermore, ASX attenuated the increase in MDA and decrease in SOD induced by ox-LDL, increased supernatant NO production, attenuated the increase in iNOS and decrease in eNOS in HUVECs with ox-LDL. ASX enhanced mRNA and protein expressions of the lectin-like ox-LDL receptor (LOX-1), which was dependent on ASX’s antioxidant activity. The inhibitory effect of ASX on EndMT could be abolished by overexpression of LOX-1 in HUVECs induced by ox-LDL. Conclusions Our data speculate that ASX prevents ox-LDL-induced endothelial cell injury and EndMT by inducing antioxidant property (SOD and NO) and decreasing LOX-1 expression.

Classical economic theories establishing a relationship between CEO remuneration and firm performance has paid particular attention to solve conflict of interest between managerial team and firm shareholders, by designing an optimum CEO remuneration that motivate executives to work in the best interest of shareholders. Many international and less Australian empirical researches suggest that there is overwhelming evidence that firm performance is strongly linked with CEO remuneration. In this paper, we reassess the association of firm performance and CEO remuneration variables using dynamic econometric models and comprehensive data from Australian Stock Exchange (ASX). We find a positive and strong association between CEO pay of top 200 Australian public listed companies and company performance. Obtained findings are similar to USA, UK and Canada studies results. We further test the effect of board and ownership features on CEO remuneration–performance sensitivity in the top 200 Australian public companies listed on ASX. Specifically, for the period of 2003-2007, our results highlight the importance of ownership structure in influencing remuneration–performance relationship. Monitoring block holders boost the responsiveness of long term incentives (LTI) remuneration to performance, thus straightening shareholder and manager welfares. However, based on a short term investment horizon strategy, insider block holders increase (decrease) the sensitivity of short-term incentives remuneration (long term incentives pay). Surprisingly, for the period 2008-2013, our findings suggest that ownership and board features did not influence significantly CEO pay-performance sensitivities. Finally, we find that larger boards increase (decrease) the responsiveness of CEO’s known remuneration (long term incentives) to performance.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the potential impact of the approved Australian carbon emissions reduction plan on the cost of capital and the association between companies’ carbon emission intensity and the cost of capital. Design/methodology/approach – A sample of Australian Stock Exchange 200 (ASX 200)-indexed companies from 2006 to 2010 is used. Hypotheses are tested based on Heckman’s two-stage approach. Three regression models are developed to examine the association between carbon emissions and the cost of capital. Findings – Using a sample of ASX 200-indexed listed companies, the paper finds that the cost of capital, including the cost of debt and the cost of equity, will increase for emissions-liable companies. Results also show that the cost of debt is positively correlated with a company’s emission intensity. However, little evidence supports that the emission intensity affects the cost of equity. Originality/value – As it is evident that the emissions reduction plan will adversely affect corporate entities’ cost of capital, this study suggests that companies, investors and lenders need to include carbon emission in risk analysis. An emissions-liable company should establish strategies to combat the impact of the Plan on rising cost that comes with the enforcement of the Plan. Government assistance is essential in the transitional period.

This study contributes to the issue of accounting for goodwill by examining the impact of changing from the Australian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (AGAAP) to Australian International Financial Reporting Standards (AIFRS) on goodwill, 3 years (2002 to 2004) before and 3 years (2006 to 2008) after AIFRS adoption. The sample is drawn from top 200 companies listed on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX). This study applies multiple regressions. The dependent variable is the closing share price 3 months after the balance sheet date. The independent variables consist of earnings per share, book value per share, goodwill in the balance sheet, goodwill in the income statement (goodwill amortisation and goodwill impairment) and goodwill acquisition. The findings indicate that goodwill accounted for in the income statement and balance sheet do not provide increased explanatory power of market value under AIFRS compared to AGAAP. Moreover, the goodwill in the income statement does not show value relevance in year 2007, but became significant in year 2008 during the global financial crisis (GFC). Also, the age of goodwill recorded in the balance sheet does not affect the value relevance of earnings and book value in the post-adoption period. This study contributes new evidence on accounting for goodwill under pre and post-IFRS accounting regimes in Australia. This is also the first study to examine the separate effects of goodwill accounting on earnings and net assets, with special attention given to the period before and during the GFC in capital markets.

We investigate Big 4 pricing over the period of 2000 to 2010. We classify the data into five periods: 2000-2001 as the pre-Sarbanes–Oxley Act (SOX) period, 2002-2003 as the SOX period, 2004-2006 as the Auditing Standard 2 (AS2) period, 2007 as the AS5 period, and 2008-2010 as the Great Recession period. The shocks to the audit market associated with these changes in auditing regulations and the economic environment have differential impacts on large clients and small clients. The percentage of small clients using Big 4 auditors dropped significantly over these shocks, whereas the percentage of large clients using Big 4 auditors experienced a large drop only from the SOX period to the AS2 period. We find that Big 4 pricing increased significantly from the pre-SOX period to the SOX period and continued to increase significantly in the AS2 period. Big 4 pricing experienced a significant decline in the AS5 period and declined insignificantly in the Great Recession period. Big 4 small firm pricing decreased significantly in the AS2 period compared with the SOX period and in the Great Recession period compared with the AS5 period. We find that the Big 4 pricing for small clients is contingent on the nature of competition. The Big 4 charged small firms higher prices in the SOX period, AS5 period, and Great Recession period when competition was lower. Our paper provides a unique contribution as a comprehensive analysis of Big 4 pricing and Big 4 small firm pricing.

This paper studies the effect of COVID-19 on the volatility of Australian stock returns and the effect of negative and positive news (shocks) by investigating the asymmetric nature of the shocks and leverage impact on volatility. We employ a generalised autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) model and extend the analysis using the exponential GARCH (EGARCH) model to capture asymmetry and allegedly leverage. We proxy the news related to the negative effect of COVID-19 on the Australian health system and its economy as bad news, and on the other hand, measures taken by government economic stimulus packages through their monetary and fiscal policies as good news. The S&P ASX200 (ASX-200) index is used as a proxy to the Australian stock market, and we use value-weighted returns of the stocks listed on ASX-200 for the period 27 January 2020 to 29 December 2020. The empirical results suggest the EGARCH model fits better in capturing asymmetry and leverage than the GARCH model in estimating the volatility of the Australian stock returns. However, another interesting finding is that the EGARCH model with volatility equation without news demonstrates a larger (smaller) leverage effect of the negative (positive) shocks on the conditional volatility compared to its variant with the news.

The study expects to find positive relations between company financial performance, company characteristics, auditing firm, and the extent of company environmental disclosure. The sample data used in this study is 200 largest Australian listed companies (ASX) in 2014. In order to explain the corporate social responsibility practices in Australian companies, this study used stakeholder and legitimacy theories. The measurement of company environmental disclosure in this study involves nine indicators of environmental disclosure index based on Environmental Social and Governance (ESG). More specifically, the statistical analysis indicates that earnings per share, return on equity, type of company, size of company, age of company, and auditing firm positively influence the company environmental disclosure. On the other hand, the results showed that return on assets has no relationship with company environmental disclosure. Overall, this study has added some information about corporate social disclosure studies focused on environmental disclosure of largest Australian companies.

Purpose Property market models have the overriding aim of predicting reasonable estimates of key dependent variables (demand, supply, rent, yield, vacancy and net absorption rate). These can be based on independent drivers of core property and economic activities. Accurate predictions can only be conducted when ample quantitative data are available with fewer uncertainties. However, a broad-fronted social, technical and ecological evolution can throw up sudden, unexpected shocks that result in the econometric outputs sceptical to unknown risk factors. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to evaluate Australian office market forecast accuracy and to determine whether the forecasts capture extreme downside risk events. Design/methodology/approach This study follows a quantitative research approach, using secondary data analysis to test the accuracy of economists’ forecasts. The forecast accuracy evaluation encompasses the measurement of economic and property forecasts under the following phases: testing for the forecast accuracy; analysing outliers of forecast errors; and testing of causal relationships. Forecast accuracy measurement incorporates scale independent metrics that include Theil’s U values (U1 and U2) and mean absolute scaled error. Inter-quartile range rule is used for the outlier analysis. To find the causal relationships among variables, the time series regression methodology is utilised, including multiple regression analysis and Granger causality developed under the vector auto regression (VAR). Findings The credibility of economic and property forecasts was questionable around the period of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC); a significant man-made Black Swan event. The forecast accuracy measurement highlighted rental movement and net absorption forecast errors as the critical inaccurate predictions. These key property variables are explained by historic information and independent economic variables. However, these do not explain the changes when error time series of the variables were concerned. According to VAR estimates, all property variables have a significant causality derived from the lagged values of Australian S&P/ASX 200 (ASX) forecast errors. Therefore, lagged ASX forecast errors could be used as a warning signal to adjust property forecasts. Research limitations/implications Secondary data were obtained from the premier Australian property markets: Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth. A limited ten-year timeframe (2001-2011) was used in the ex-post analysis for the comparison of economic and property variables. Forecasts ceased from 2011, due to the discontinuity of the Australian Financial Review quarterly survey of economists; the main source of economic forecast data. Practical implications The research strongly recommended naïve forecasts for the property variables, as an input determinant in each office market forecast equation. Further, lagged forecast errors in the ASX could be used as a warning signal for the successive property forecast errors. Hence, data adjustments can be made to ensure the accuracy of the Australian office market forecasts. Originality/value The paper highlights the critical inaccuracy of the Australian office market forecasts around the GFC. In an environment of increasing incidence of unknown events, these types of risk events should not be dismissed as statistical outliers in real estate modelling. As a proactive strategy to improve office market forecasts, lagged ASX forecast errors could be used as a warning signal. This causality was mirrored in rental movements and total vacancy forecast errors. The close interdependency between rents and vacancy rates in the forecasting process and the volatility in rental cash flows reflects on direct property investment and subsequently on the ASX, is therefore justified.

In the 1970’s Managed Investment Funds began to source funds directly from the public for investment in the capital markets. The main selling feature of the funds was that they could accumulate a pool of investment capital which would then be invested to earn returns, through economies of scale, in excess of those that could be earned by the investors individually.
Investors in managed funds usually benchmark the performance of their investments, and by default the performance of the fund managers, against the returns available on the index. So that they may at least mimic the return on the index many fund managers will weight the assets in their portfolio to match that of the index.
The present study uses a raw return, a dividend adjusted return and a market model return to analyse the impact on investors returns of shares that either enter or exit Australia’s benchmark market index. The period of the study is between the introduction of the benchmark S&P ASX 200 Index in April 2000 and December 2004.
The present study finds conclusive evidence that the announcement of changes to the index does not contain any information of which the market is unaware. In fact there is strong evidence that investors begin to respond to potential changes in the in index constituents six months prior to the actual change.
These results differ significantly from those found in studies on the US and the UK markets and are of importance to those investors that attempt to track returns of the index.
The results of the present study also provide strong evidence of the dominance of the funds management industry in the Australian market. This has significance for the small investor who is trying to compete and manage their portfolio for themselves.

During a survey of black cotton soil zones of Karnataka, indigenously stabilized black cotton soil deposits were encountered in Belgaum, Bijapur, Bagalkot and Gadag Districts of Karnataka. These modified black cotton soils have low swelling and negligible shrinkage tendencies. Owing to their low volume change potential on moisture content changes, these soils are widely preferred in earth construction activities. The exact origin of these modified black cotton soil deposits is not known. According to anecdotal references, these soils were prepared by mixing unknown proportions of wood ash, organic matter and black cotton soil and allowing them to age for unknown periods of time. As wood-ash was apparently used in their preparation, these modified black cotton soils are referred to as ash-modified soils (AMS) in the thesis.
The practice of preparing ash-modified soils is no longer pursued in black cotton soil regions of Karnataka and the available supply of this indigenously stabilized soil is being fast depleted. Also, attempts have not been made to characterize the physico-chemical and engineering properties of AMS deposits of Karnataka. Given the widespread utilization of ash-modified soils in black cotton soil areas of Karnataka, there is a need to understand their physico-chemical and engineering behaviour and the physico-chemical mechanisms responsible for their chemical modification.
Swelling and shrinkage of expansive soil deposits are cyclic in nature due to periodic climatic changes. Chemically stabilized black cotton soil deposits are also expected to experience cyclic wetting and drying due to seasonal climatic changes. The impact of cyclic wetting and drying on the swelling behaviour of natural expansive soils is well-documented. However, the impact of alternate wetting and drying on the swelling behaviour of admixture stabilized expansive soils (these include natural - ash-modified soils and laboratory - lime stabilized black cotton soils) has not been examined. Such a study would be helpful to assess the long term behaviour of admixture stabilized soils in field situations.
To achieve the above objectives, experiments are performed that study:
1.The physico-chemical and engineering properties of ash-modified soils from different Districts of Karnataka. The physico-chemical and engineering properties of natural black cotton soil (BCS) specimens from locations adjacent to ash-modified soil deposits are also examined to understand and evaluate the changes in the engineering characteristics of the ash-modified soils due to addition of admixtures.
2. Identify the physico-chemical mechanisms responsible for the chemical stabilizationof ash-modified soils.
3.The influence of cyclic wetting and drying on the wetting induced volume changebehaviour of admixture stabilized black cotton soils, namely, ash-modified blackcotton soils and lime stabilized black cotton soils.

Since a substantial amount of coal combustion byproducts (CCB) are produced each year, generating value-added product from fly ash, which is a major constituent of these CCBs, has been an important area of research for several decades. Natural magnetite (NM), which is used to maintain dense medium slurry pulp density in coal preparation plants, has a current market value of more than $200 per ton. The use of fly ash derived magnetite (FAM) as an alternative to natural magnetite has potential benefits for dense medium processes, such as lower cost, greater stability at low medium density, more efficient delivery systems. This study developed a suitable processing scheme to extract high-grade (> 96%) magnetite from fly ash generated from burning high sulfur coal, and investigated the suitability of the FAM product for dense medium application in coal preparation plants. A classifying cyclone was utilized in the process flow sheet for the pre-concentration of FAM in its underflow stream, which was enriched to high grade FAM by a single stage wet magnetic separator of low intensity (~1000 gauss). A statistically designed experimental program was utilized to maximize the magnetite grade and recovery achieved from the above mentioned flow sheet. The FAM product particles had a slightly coarser particle size distribution than the NM particles. In addition, the FAM particles were found to have a spherical shape; but about one unit lower specific gravity in comparison to the NM particles. However, the F5 Stability Index of the resulting FAM product was found to be in the desired range of 30 to 40 for its suitable application as a dense medium. The coal cleaning performance obtained from a 0.15 m diameter dense medium cyclone using dense medium prepared from both of FAM and NM, were quite similar. However, the effective separation density (SG50) obtained from the FAM-based dense medium was significantly different from the medium density; this may need further investigation in future. A preliminary economic analysis, conducted for a hypothetical mini-plant having a fly ash handling capacity of 100 ton/hour, indicated the cost of FAM extraction to be nearly $5/ton. The cost assumes that the FAM extraction plant is located at the fly ash producing utility site and does not include the cost of thermal drying that may be required to reduce the moisture content of the FAM filter cake produced at the FAM plant. A preliminary civil engineering study conducted to investigate the effect of FAM extraction on the compressive strength property of the non-magnetic flyash (left behind after FAM extraction) failed to produce a conclusive finding. The specimens prepared using 10% and 30% fly ash replacements indicated that the compressive strength does not change due to FAM extraction. However, the specimens using 20% fly ash replacement indicated that compressive strength does change due to FAM extraction. Hence, a more detailed study is recommended to investigate this discrepancy.

This thesis, whose title is DEVELOPMENT AND SOCIAL ASSISTANCE: AN EFFECTIVENESS EVALUATION IN SOCIAL ASSISTENCE POLICY IN THE CITIES OF ASS? AND MOSSOR?/RN (2004/2008), has as main aim to evaluate effectiveness in Social Assistance Policy in the cities of Assu and Mossor?/RN, from 2004 to 2008, identifying its impacts and effects in life of its users. The methodological process for the research was composed by: a) Literature review on this theme, development of public policies; social public policies, public policy evaluation and Social Assistance Policy in Brazil; b) Documental research from Municipal Management of Social Development and Municipal Counsels of Social Assistance in the cities of Assu and Mossor?/RN about the object of this study and empirical field; c) Field Research constituted by the realization of Focal Groups with Social Assistance users and semistructured interviews with municipal managers from Ass? and Mossor?. It was also taken into account participant observations in events and activities related to Social Assistance previously mentioned, considering field management and also the response to users demands. Articulating the themes of Development and Public Social Policy in Social Assistance was the theoretical purpose for this thesis. To achieve this purpose, it was performed two theoretical displacements related, at the same time, to the notion of development and to the concept of Social Assistance, which means to comprehend development as social change and improvement in users life quality, expressed in the expansion of their capacities and liberties (SEN, 1993, 2000), and the Social Assistance as an element for development. Such displacements provide a view of Public policy and Social Policies and evaluate National Policy of Social Assistance achieved in those cities. As product, this thesis presents a methodological purpose for effectiveness evaluation in Public Policy, taking into account expansion of capacities and liberties, concluding that Social Assistance Policy in Ass? and Mossor?/RN, even in lesser extent had its impact and caused effective results in the life of their users and provided an expansion of their capacities and liberties, improving life quality and empowered agent condition for those subjects. The results show that this Policy has been proved to be effective, and consequently, it was considered, in this thesis, to be also an element and an allied for development

In the framework of the Terrafirma project, Persistent Scatterers Interferometry (PSI) has be used for mapping land subsidence at basin scale in Gioia Tauro plain (Italy). The investigated area is built over unconsolidated fine-grained sediments, where the increasing groundwater demands for irrigation have caused the natural sediment consolidation to progressively accelerate. Both historical (1992-2001; ERS1/2 images) and recent (2002-2006; ENVISAT images) scenarios are analyzed to solve the spatial variability and temporal evolution of ground displacements affecting the plain. The results show deformation rates as high as 10-12 mm/yr in 1992-2007, with highest velocities occurred between 1992 and 2000 within the central part of the basin, in the area of Rizziconi (5 km ESE of Gioia Tauro). The outcomes of this PSI study could support the future improvement of groundwater management and the implementation of best strategies for land use planning and sustainable use of groundwater resources.

It exists for individual stocks (Jegadeesh and Titman, 1993), for industry sectors (Moskowitz and Grinblatt, 1999), for style portfolios (Lewellen, 2002), in international equity markets (Rouwenhorst, 1998; Chui et al., 2010), and across asset classes (Bhojraj and Swaminathan, 2006; Menkhoff et al., 2012; Asness et al., 2013). Momentum also appears to be persistent over time, at least outside the U.S. stock market (Jegadeesh and Titman, 2001; McLean and Pontif, 2016; Green et al., 2017; Jacobs and Müller, 2020).

AbstractGeneral Land Use Cover (LUC) datasets provide a holistic picture of all the land uses and covers on Earth, without focusing specifically on any individual land use category. As opposed to the LUC maps which are only available for one date or year, reviewed in Chap. “Global General Land Use Cover Datasets with a Single Date”, the maps with time series allow users to study LUC change over time. Time series of general LUC datasets at a global scale is useful for understanding global patterns of LUC change and their relation with global processes such as climate change or the loss of biodiversity. MCD12Q1, also known as MODIS Land Cover, was the first time series of LUC maps to be produced on a global scale. When it was first launched in 2002, there were already many organizations and researchers working on accurate, detailed global LUC maps, although these were all one-off editions for single years. The MCD12Q1 dataset continues to be updated today, providing a series of maps for the period 2001–2018. Since the launch of MCD12Q1, many other historical series of LUC maps have been produced, especially in the last decade. This has resulted in the LUC map series covering a longer time period at higher spatial resolution. Recent efforts have focused on producing consistent time series of maps that can track LUC changes over time with low levels of uncertainty. GLCNMO (500 m), GlobCover (300 m) and GLC250 (250 m) provide time series of LUC maps at similar spatial resolutions to MCD12Q1 (500 m), although for fewer reference years. GLCNMO provides information for the years 2003, 2008 and 2013, GlobCover for 2005 and 2009 and GLC250 for 2001 and 2010. GLASS-GLC is the dataset with the coarsest spatial resolution of all those reviewed in this chapter (5 km), even though it was released very recently, in 2020. Map producers have focused on this dataset’s long timespan (1982–2015) rather than on its spatial detail. LC-CCI and CGLS-LC100 are the recently launched datasets providing a consistent series of LUC maps, which show LUC changes over time with lower levels of uncertainty. LC-CCI provides LUC information for one of the longest timespans reviewed here (1992–2018) at a spatial resolution of 300 m. CGLS-LC100 provides LUC information for a shorter period (2015–2019) but at a higher spatial resolution (100 m). In both cases, updates are scheduled. The datasets with the highest levels of spatial detail are FROM-GLC and GLC30. These were produced using highly detailed Landsat imagery, delivering time series of maps at 30 m. The FROM-GLC project even has a test LUC map at a spatial resolution of 10 m from Sentinel-2 imagery for the year 2017, making it the global dataset with the greatest spatial detail of all those reviewed in this book. Both FROM-GLC and GLC30 provide data for three different dates: the former for 2010, 2015 and 2017 and the latter for 2000, 2010 and 2020.

Abstract In recent years, Latvia has established itself as one of the top two countries with the most intensive emigration among EU/EFTA member states. This chapter starts by describing the demographic context and the scale of emigration post-2000, followed by a brief history of the main population flows (migration, refugees and deportation) from and to Latvia in the twentieth century. It then offers a more detailed analysis of emigration during the first 15 years of the twenty-first century including a closer look at the four waves of recent emigration: (i) the pre-EU accession wave, 2000–2003; (ii) the post-accession wave, 2004–2008; (iii) the crisis-driven wave, 2009–2010; and (iv) the post-crisis wave, 2011–2016. For each wave, description of the economic and social context is given within a conceptual framework using insights from human capital theory, the new economic theory of migration, network theory and migration systems theory. Institutional factors are also emphasised. Together with some survey-based evidence, this leads to a set of hypotheses about the nature of the four emigration waves. Our own compilation of data from receiving countries (which reveals problems with Latvia’s official migration statistics) is used for documenting the dynamics of the scale and main destinations of this emigration. Empirical analysis of the changes in the reasons for and intended duration of emigration, its effects on the structure and demographic potential of the population and changes in emigrant profiles and selectivity with respect to human capital and ethnicity is based on a number of independent data sources, including the Latvian Labour Force Survey (2000–2015), the Database of Immigrants in OECD Countries (DIOC 2010/2011), and The Emigrant Communities of Latvia survey conducted worldwide in 2014.

AbstractThe introduction, establishment, and spread of invasive species in terrestrial and aquatic environments is widely recognized as one of the most serious threats to the health, sustainability, and productivity of native ecosystems (Holmes et al. 2009; Mack et al. 2000; Pyšek et al. 2012; USDA Forest Service 2013). In the United States, invasive species are the second leading cause of native species endangerment and extinction, and their costs to society have been estimated at $120 billion annually (Crowl et al. 2008; Pimentel et al. 2000, 2005). These costs include lost production and revenue from agricultural and forest products, compromised use of waterways and terrestrial habitats, harm to human and animal health, reduced property values and recreational opportunities, and diverse costs associated with managing (e.g., monitoring, preventing, controlling, and regulating) invasive species (Aukema et al. 2011; Pimentel et al. 2005). The national significance of these economic, ecological, and social impacts in the United States has prompted various actions by both legislative and executive branches of the Federal Government (e.g., the Nonindigenous Aquatic Nuisance Prevention and Control Act of 1990; the Noxious Weed Control and Eradication Act of 2002; Executive Order 13112 of 1999, amended in 2016).

Websites connect businesses with customers. They are an important medium that facilitates online transactions, a necessity for businesses. The design and usability of an Electronic Commerce (EC) website play an important role in achieving its objectives (Kumar, Smith, & Bannerjee, 2004; Marcus, 2005; Nielsen, 2003; 2005; Krug, 2006; Cappel & Huang, 2007). Recognizing their importance, design and usability aspects of EC websites have been widely researched in both applied and academic research (Lecerof & Paterno, 1998; Lohse & Spiller, 1999; Nielsen, 2000; Cao, Zhang, & Seydel, 2005; Flavian & Guinaliu, 2006; Nathan, Yeow, & Murugesan, 2008; Nathan & Yeow, 2009; Robins & Holmes, 2008). This chapter discusses the recent work with web design and electronic commerce. The importance of usability and user-centered web designs are highlighted. Usability to specific target groups and industries, such as airlines, government, and services portals, are also discussed. Altogether, design guidelines are given for web industries, and recommendations are made for better usability in designing websites.

The SLAI measures the seven concepts found in Patterson’s (2003) theory of servant leadership. According to Patterson, the servant leader (a) leads and serves with love (Winston, 2002), (b) acts with humility (Sandage & Wiens, 2001), (c) is altruistic (Kaplan, 2000), (d) is visionary for the followers (Tangney, 2000), (e) is trusting (Hauser and House, 2000), (f) is serving (Wis, 2002), and (g) empowers followers (Covey, 2002). These are the seven constructs that comprise the servant leadership in Patterson’s model. Servant leadership as a theory emerged from Robert Greenleaf’s (1977) work. Recent investigations have expanded servant leadership to include identification and assessment servant leadership factors (Dennis & Bocarnea,2005; Dennis & Winston, 2003; Laub, 1999; Page & Wong, 2000; Patterson, 2003; Russell, 2000; Russell & Stone, 2002). The 42 items of the Servant Leadership Assessment Instrument (SLAI) cover a variety of attitudes and behaviors reflective of the aforementioned research. Reliability Research has indicated that the SLAI is internally consistent and reliable. Alpha reliability coefficients ranging from .89 to .92 have been reported (Dennis, 2004) for factors of love, empowerment, vision, and humility. Trust factor, however, has loaded with two items on two second data collections (Dennis, 2004) and one sample (Irving, 2005). The following alpha coefficients were found, measuring servant leadership at the individual leader level: (a) .92 for the SLAI love scale; (b) .92 for the SLAI empowerment scale; (c) .8637 for the SLAI vision scale; and (d) .92 for the SLAI humility scale. A Cronbach alpha coefficient could not be calculated for the SLAI trust scale because it only has two items in the scale (Irving, 2005).

Information and communication technologies (ICTs) have the potential to improve the quality of the overall citizen experience when interacting with government, including information and services (Bourquard, 2003; Dawes, Pardo, & DiCaterino, 1999; Garson, 2004; Gartner, 2000; Grönlund, 2001). State and local governments are increasingly using ICTs in their operational tasks as well as their provision of public services (Holden, Norris & Fletcher, 2003; Moon, 2002; West, 2005). Many of these governments have created Websites and portals, which provide information about the government agencies and, in some cases, electronic transactions such as tax payment systems, online communities, job search, licensing, and vehicle registration, among others. Through the incorporation of these new features and applications, technological and organizational sophistication have been systematically added to e-government initiatives throughout the last few years (Holden, Norris & Fletcher, 2003; Moon, 2002; West, 2005). However, there are few systematic approaches to evaluate the quality and impact of these initiatives.

Information technology (IT) investments are justified based on average improvement in performance (Peacock & Tanniru, 2005). Firms rely on those investments (Demirhan, Jacob, & Raghunathan, 2002; Duh, Chow, & Chen, 2006; Tuten, 2003) because executives believe that investments in wireless technologies help boost company performance. In this regard, the benefits from wireless technology applications depend on the extent to which they are congruent with the firm’s performance (Duh et al., 2006). But, some IS researchers argue that competitors may easily duplicate investments in IT resources by purchasing the same hardware, software, and network, and hence resources necessarily do not provide sustained performance (Santhanam & Hartono, 2003). The use of wireless communications and computing is growing quickly (Kim & Steinfield, 2004; Leung & Cheung, 2004; Yang, Chatterjee, & Chan, 2004). The future of wireless technology may also bring more devices that can operate using the many different standards and it may be possible that a global standard is accepted, such as the expected plans for the 3G technology UMTS. The wireless beyond 3G (B3G) systems or the so called composite radio environments (CRE) (or even 4G systems) possess multiple features that allow employees to collaborate with each other and provide diverse access alternatives (Kouis, Domestichas, Koundourakis, & Theologou, 2007). But issues of risk and uncertainty due to technical, organizational, and environmental factors continue to hinder executive efforts to produce meaningful evaluation of investment in wireless technology (Smith, Kulatilaka, & Venkatramen, 2002). Despite the use of investment appraisal techniques, executives are often forced to rely on instinct when finalizing wireless investment decisions. A key problem with evaluation techniques that emerges is their treatment of uncertainty and their failure to account for the fact that outside of a decision to reject an investment outright, firms may have an option to defer an investment until a later period (Tallon, Kauffman, Lucas, Whinston, & Zhu, 2002). In addition, many authors believe that if firms can combine the appropriate investment strategies to create a unique wireless technology capability, superior firm performance can be the result. Utilization of wireless devices and being “connected” without wires is inevitable (Gebauer, Shaw, & Gribbins, 2004; Jarvenpaa, Lang, Reiner, Yoko, & Virpi, 2003). Market researchers predict that by the end of 2005, there will be almost 500 million users of wireless devices, generating more than $200 billion in revenues (Chang & Kannan, 2002; Xin, 2004). And by 2006, the global mobile commerce (m-commerce) market will be worth $230 billion (Chang & Kannan, 2002). Such predictions indicate the importance that is attached to wireless technologies as a way of supporting business activities. Evaluating investments in wireless technology and understanding which technology makes the “best fit” for a company or organization performance is difficult because of the numerous technologies and the costs, risks, and potential benefits associated with each technology.

Academic research on film tourism has been around since the early 1990s, but the popularity and extensiveness of research in this area has increased in recent years (Hahm, Upchurch & Wang, 2008; Beeton, 2010), with a number of studies examining the increase of visitor numbers to film locations (Beeton, 2005; Busby, Brunt, & Lund, 2003; Cousins & Anderek, 1993; Croy & Walker, 2003; Gundle, 2002; Kim & Richardson, 2003; Riley, Baker, & Van Doren, 1998; Riley & Van Doren, 1992; Schofield, 1996; Tooke & Baker, 1996; Di Cesare et al., 2009). Similarly, the impact of films on people's image formation has been widely acknowledged in the literature (Butler, 1990; Gartner, 1993; Iwashita, 2003). Films are not generally produced with the intent to attract tourists to a destination, but tend to influence viewers indirectly as a background part of the movie's message (Butler, 1990; Hudson & Ritchie, 2006). This is because they can present millions of viewers with substantial information about a destination, create a first-time image, or alter an existing image in a relatively short period of time (Hahm et al., 2008). Thus, this study makes a modest attempt in the direction of identifying the relationship between film tourism and tourist's desire to travel, which is a cross national comparison between India and China.

Films are not generally produced with the intent to attract tourists to a destination, but tend to influence viewers indirectly as a background part of the movie's message (Butler, 1990; Hudson & Ritchie, 2006). This is because they can present millions of viewers with substantial information about a destination, create a first-time image, or alter an existing image in a relatively short period of time (Hahm et al., 2008). Thus, this study makes a modest attempt in the direction of identifying the relationship between film tourism and tourist's desire to travel, which is a cross national comparison between India and China.

This study aims at analyzing the relationship between Foreign Direct Investment and Growth in Turkey by using Threshold Cointegration. As the studies about the impact of Foreign Direct Investment on growth are surveyed, it is seen that all of them uses liner methods except two. Starting point of these studies that use liner methods are the positive relationship between Growth and Foreign Direct Investment. As such, Yılmaz and Barbaros (2006) find positive relationship between Foreign Direct Investment and market size in Turkey between 1980 and 2001. Erdal and Tatoğlu (2002) reach the same conclusion for the period of 1980-1998 by using real Gross Domestic Product as a proxy for market size. Deichmann, Karidis and Sayek (2003) find positive linkage between Foreign Direct Investment and Gross Domestic Product in Turkey by using Conditional Logit Model. Bildirici and Bozoklu (2008) find positive relationship between growth and Foreign Direct Investment by using Markov Switching Vector Auto Regression method. Katırcıoğlu (2009) analyses the connection between Foreign Direct Investment and economic development by using Auto Regressive Distributed Lag and indicates that economic development causes net Foreign Direct Investment. Darrat and Sarkar (2009) state the affirmative effects of the Foreign Direct Investment on growth as expected theoretically. Bildirici, Bozoklu (2008) find positive relationship between growth and Foreign Direct Investment in Turkey. Bildirici, Alp and Kayıkçı (2010) state the existence of threshold effect for these variables. This study intends to research this effect in historical perspective, using Threshold Cointegration Analysis.

Comprehension of academic literature is a key element in the immersion of university students in the academic subcultures of each discipline (Chanock, 2001; Estienne & Carlino, 2004; Gottschalk & Hjortshoj, 2004). To do so, universities opt for the implementation of text discussion such as book clubs (Hartley, 2002; Long, 2003), dialogic literary gatherings (Flecha, 2000; Mirceva & Larena, 2010). or literary circles (Daniels, 2002; Duncan, 2012).This case study, essentially qualitative, seeks to know the impact of text discussions on the professional identity of the students of Teacher Education and Computer Science at the University of Andorra (UdA). Results are obtained by student focus groups, the Likert test Motivational Survey on Academic Reading, teacher interviews and taking notes in situ throughout the discussions.The main results indicate that the text discussions have a positive impact on students as (1) it increases the reflection, understanding and critique of the professional world, (2) they apply evidence-based content in professional contexts and (3) it improves the justification of informed professional decisions.

Suas bases teóricas são: interação social (VOLOCHÍNOV, 2004; BAKHTIN, 2003), elementos socio-históricos e culturais para o desenvolvimento das pessoas (VIGOTSKY, 1987; BRONCKART, 2006, 2014), o trabalho docente (MACHADO; ABREU-TARDELLI, 2005), Teoria das Representações Sociais (MOSCOVICI, 2007; PY, 2004; GUARESCHI, 2000), gênero textual (KLEIMAN; CECINEROS; TINOCO, 2013; DOLZ; NOVERRAZ; SCHNEUWLY, 2004) e de Letramentos (KLEIMAN, 2007). Relata aspectos de um estudo de caso/ etnográfico, desenvolvido em instituições públicas. Os dados – advindos de entrevistas, questionários, Projeto Político-Pedagógico de cada escola e diário de campo da pesquisadora - foram examinados sob a ótica da Análise do Discurso (ORLANDI, 1996, 2011, 2003; AUTHIER-REVUZ, 1990) e da Semântica Argumentativa (DUCROT, 1987; KOCH, 1996). Revelam que as RS que interferem no agir docente refletindo sobre o trabalho coletivo, o planejamento cotidiano e recai sobre as práticas didáticas desenvolvidas no interior da escola. Tais interferências expressam, concomitantemente, um movimento de manutenção e de mudança sobre as próprias representações e sobre as práticas profissionais. Os docentes vêem-se interpelados pelas injunções e negociações que restringem as próprias ações. Essas restrições manifestam-se nos processos de planejamentos coletivos e individuais e expressam contradições diante dos objetivos enfim, os professores encontram possibilidades para agir na direção de mudanças e/ou transformações marcadas pelos posicionamentos.

This paper explains in a de-westernized sense (Gunaratne, 2010) how internet-mediated communication changes the way we deal with and plan time both individually and culturally in Germany and China. Therefore, it blends Western and Eastern culture and media theories. The paper focuses on two distinct phenomena: temporal change due to social media, and Online journalism, as the core of Internet-mediated communication (for Germany 39% communication, media use 24% Projektgruppe ARD/ZDF-Multimedia, 2016; for China 90.7% instant messaging, 82% Internet news China Internet Network Information Center, 2017), with other temporal change via smart devices touched upon (Ash, 2018). General research on time in post modern societies, recently more focused on media’s temporal change phenomena (e.g. Barker, 2012; Barker, 2018; Castells, 2010; Eriksen, 2001; Hartmann, 2016; Hassan, 2003; Innis, 2004; Neverla, 2010a, 2010b; Nowotny, 1995; Rantanen, 2005; Wajcman, 2010; Wajcman and Dodd) has not yet linked the different societal and cultural levels of temporal change. Thus, we suggest the following to fill this research gap: For a micro perspective the notions of network theories (e.g. Granovetter, 1973; Schönhuth, 2013), media synchronicity (Dennis, Fuller, and Valacich, 2008) and the idea of permanent connectivity (Sonnentag, Reinecke, Mata, and Vorderer, 2018; van Dijck, 2013; Vorderer, Krömer, and Schneider, 2016) are linked. On a meso level, institutional change in Online journalism with a focus on acceleration is modeled (Ananny, 2016; Bødker and Sonnevend, 2017; Dimmick, Feaster, and Hoplamazian, 2011; Krüger, 2014; Neuberger, 2010). On a macro level, mediatization theory (Couldry and Hepp, 2017; Krotz, 2001, 2012) and recent acceleration theory (Rosa, 2005, 2012, 2017) is discussed. The levels are systematically linked suggesting a micro-meso-macro-link (Quandt, 2010) to then ask if and how many of the dimensions of the construct temporal understanding (Faust, 2016) can be changed through Internet-mediated communication. Temporal understanding consists of nine dimensions: General past, general future, instrumental experience (monochronicity), fatalism, interacting experience (polychronicity), pace of life, future as planned expectation and result of proximal goals as well as future as trust based interacting expectation and result of present positive behavior. Temporal understanding integrates the anthropological construct of polychronicity (Bluedorn, Kalliath, Strube, and Martin, 1999; Hall, 1984; Lindquist and Kaufman-Scarborough, 2007), pace of life (Levine, 1998) and temporal horizon (Klapproth, 2011) into a broader framework which goes beyond Western biased constructs through the theory driven incorporation of Confucian notions (Chinese Culture Connection, 1987). Finally, meta trends are laid out.

In 1993, workers discovered a mummified human head during exploitation in the salt mine of Chehrābād, Province of Zanjān, Iran (Vatandoust 1998). This find marks the beginning of more than 20 years of international and interdisciplinary research. The mummified head dates to Sassanian times and is known to the world today as “Salt Man 1”. The salt extraction in Chehrābād continued until 2009 and led to the discovery of further mummified human remains, which were, in accordance to the first find, named “Salt Men of Zanjān”. These salt mummies as well as the site are a unique cultural heritage for humankind. In 2004, archaeologists made an exceptional discovery during a rescue excavation. This find, the mummy of a 15 to 16-year-old youth, is – to date – the best-preserved salt mummy known worldwide (Aali 2005). In 2007 an international research project started, co-headed by the German Mining Museum Bochum and the Zanjān Saltman and Archaeological Museum. All these efforts led to the halt of the commercial exploitation of the salt mine in 2009. Subsequently, the salt mine was declared a cultural heritage site (Aali et al. 2012). In multiple excavation campaigns not only the salt mine itself, but also its surrounding area were studied thoroughly. The results of these joint efforts were published in two monographs (Aali, Stöllner 2015; Stöllner, Aali, Bagherpour Kashani 2020) and various further articles (e.g. Aali et al. 2012;Öhrström et al. 2016; Pollard et al. 2008; Ramaroli et al. 2010; Vahdati Nasab et al. 2019)

Cleanup operations in the Marcoule Vitrification Facility (AVM) will start in 2007 [ref 1]. This plant includes 20 highly irradiating storage tanks for high-level liquid waste before vitrification. The objective of the cleanup phase is to significantly decrease the amount of highly radioactive waste resulting from dismantling. A comprehensive radiological survey of the plant was initiated in 2000. Most of the tanks were characterized using advanced technologies: gamma imaging, CdZnTe gamma spectroscopy, dose rate measurements and 3D calculations codes. At the same time, inspections were conducted to develop 3D geometrical models of the tanks. The techniques used and the main results obtained are described as well as lessons learned from these operations. The rinsing program was defined in 2006. Decontamination operations are expected to begin in 2007, and radiological surveys will be followed up to monitor the efficiency of the decontamination process. Specific rinsing of all tanks and equipment will be carried out from 2007 to 2009. Concentrated liquid solutions will be vitrified between 2008 and 2010; the decommissioning of AVM will be delayed until the end of 2010. This strategy aims at producing less than 5% “B” type (long-lived intermediate-level) waste from the decommissioning operations, as well as reducing the dose rate and risks by simplified remote dismantling. The paper reviews the main options selected for decontamination, as well as the radiological characterization strategy. Some cost-related aspects will also be analyzed.

Assessment of student learning outcomes plays an important role in educational effectiveness, improvement, and sustainability that is increasingly being recognized and required by accrediting bodies (Buzzetto-More, 2006; Haken, 2006). A form of performance-based assessment that is growing in popularity and is heralded for its purposeful, dynamic, and integrated nature is the portfolio (Cooper, 1999; ePort, 2003; Paulson, Paulson, & Meyer, 1991). Electronic portfolios encourage students to engage in self reflection by providing a broad range of means for expressing the total learning experience as linked to standards and learning outcomes (AAHE, 2001; Barett, 2004; ePort, 2003; Martell & Calderon, 2005; Popper, 2005). They are an effective form of assessment that encourages students and educators to examine skills that may not be otherwise accessed using traditional means such as higher order thinking, communications, and collaborative abilities (Buzzetto-More, 2006; Wright, 2004). Electronic portfolios can be created using tools ranging from off-the-shelf generic software applications to widely available systems. This paper will focus on the latter by investigating the eight most widely available systems and by providing a detailed examination of their platform features. A matrix has been provided that offers a side-by-side comparison of the platforms by a variety of features that include: learning outcomes, rubrics, storage, support, assessments, surveys, advisement, communication, collaboration, data collection/reporting, intended user, supporting file types, pricing structure, and accessibility.

The paper deals with EU financial support mechanisms for agricultural holdings (in terms of spatial differentiation) and includes the issues related to a range of activities within the Rural Development Plan/Programme [Polish: PROW] which were conducted between 2002 and 2004 (Rural Development Plan) and between 2007 and 2010 (Rural Development Programme 2007–2013) and with regard to the organisation and technological development of agriculture, i.e. afforestation. The research demonstrated serious territorial differences in the amount and structure of European funds acquired by agricultural holdings in poviats located in the Warmińsko- Mazurskie voivodeship. Two indices were used in the study: poviat activity (comparison of the number of applications submitted) and absorption of funds in agricultural holdings (comparison of the number of payments made) which were considered together as a composite index of EU fund utilisation, whereby the funds acquired in the periods of 2004–2006 and 2007–2010 were treated separately. A holistic analysis was also carried out and it included the entirety of European Programme Measures, with special attention paid to the differences between spatial patterns observed between 2004 and 2010 per 1 ha of forest. Additionally, a co-relation between poviat activity, payments made and forest land area was analysed. The study included also the relationship between the absorption index and the forest land area. It has been shown that the Common Agricultural Policy [Polish: WPR] instruments dedicated for pro-ecological agricultural activities in poviats of the Warmińsko-Mazurskie voivodship – mostly with regard to afforestation – contribute to spatial changes in the land use structure.

The water balance of agro ecological systems is a key parameter for most physical and physiological processes with the system soil–crop–climate. Therefore it is of great importance to calculate the water budget parameters in the required scale. The field study was conducted in the period of 2002–2005. Seedlings were planted in Irrigation engineering department experimental fields at the Lithuanian University of Agriculture. Seedlings were grown under standard nursery cultural practices until being transplanted into new fields in mid April 2002 and 2004. The research site contains evaporators and 8 lysimeters in which spruce seedlings were grown and studied. Lysimeters amount 42 m2 and 30 m2. At 2002, field No.1 was irrigated 8 times, irrigation norm was 250 m3 ha-1 and seedling got 2000 m3 ha-1 water. Field No.2 was irrigated 6 times, irrigation norm – 1500 m3 ha-1. In 2003 fields No. 1 and No. 2 were irrigated 4 times and seedlings got 1000 m3 ha-1 water. At 2004, field No.1 was irrigated 8 times, irrigation norm was 250 m3 ha-1 and seedling got 2000 m3 ha-1 water. Field No.2 was irrigated 6 irrigation norm – 1500 m3 ha-1. The total evapotranspiration of the first year seedlings planted in the field No.1 in 2004 made up 323 mm. The total evapotranspiration of the seedlings growing in variant No. 2 was 307 mm in 2004 and it is by 16 mm less as compared to variant No.1.

Managers are challenged with the impact of problematic plants, including exotic, invasive, and pest plant species. Information on the cover and frequency of these plant species is essential for developing risk-based approaches to managing them. Based on surveys conducted in 2006, 2013, 2016, and 2020, Heartland Inventory and Monitoring Network staff and contractors identified a cumulative total of 53 potentially problematic plant species in Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield. Of the 40 species found in 2020, we characterized 9 as very low frequency, 13 as low frequency, 9 as medium frequency, and 9 as high frequency. Of these 40, midpoint cover estimates of 1 low-frequency, 4 medium-frequency, and 8 high-frequency species exceeded the 10-acre threshold. The 10-acre threshold represents a limit beyond which eradication of a problematic plant species is likely not possible. Because of the number, extent, and cover of problematic plants in the park and the small park size, control efforts should focus on treating high priority species across the entire park. High priority species may include plant species capable of rapid spread, species at low population levels, and species that can be effectively controlled.

The Heartland Inventory and Monitoring Network completed its sixth year of plant community monitoring at George Washington Carver National Monument in 2020. Plant community monitoring focused on the restored prairie community. We visited seven monitoring sites in each of the six years and collected data on plant species and ground cover. In this report we also included two environmental factors—precipitation and recent fire history—to better understand the vegetation community status and trends. Since 2000, precipitation has often been below the 30-year normal. Moreover, annual precipitation was below normal for all but one of the monitoring years. We found that the drought in 2012 stood out as possibly influencing plant guild cover. Although prairies are adapted to drought, further analyses might reveal more about the role of climate change in these vegetation communities. Fire management also plays an important role in shaping plant communities. Prescribed fire occurrence became more frequent and consistent through the period of plant monitoring. Additional treatments, including herbicide and mowing, also supported a healthy prairie. The prairie plant community continues to be moderately diverse despite recent increases in tree seedlings and small saplings. Species richness in 2012 was different than in two of the six years monitored. However, diversity indices (H′ and J′) were very similar across monitored years. Species guilds (also known as functional groups) exhibited differing patterns. Woody plants, long a concern at the monument, were statistically similar across years. In 2020, grass-like species increased, but grass species appeared to have declined below prior years. Grass cover in 2004 was statistically different (greater) than in 2008 and 2020. The reasons for this are not clear. Of particular interest to the park is the status of two sumac species (Rhus glabra and R. copallinum). These species were in decline as a result of focused management actions since 2012. However, the blackberry species (Rubus spp.) seemed to be replacing the sumac in some sites. In 2020, nonnative species richness and cover were below peak levels, demonstrating management actions have been successful in maintaining low levels. The vegetation monitoring protocol experienced some changes between 2004 and 2020. A key difference was a shift from sampling twice during the field season to sampling only once in a monitoring year. Although a decline in species richness was anticipated, that pattern was not apparent. However, the abundance of grasses may have been affected by the shift in seasonality of sampling. Additionally, we remedied inconsistencies in how tree regeneration was recorded (stem tallies in some cases and cover estimates in other cases). We converted all cover data to stem tallies and density was calculated to be consistent with the protocol. The monument has had success with coordinating fire management and invasive species management. A decrease in sumac across the prairie is evidence of this success. These actions will continue to be important for maintaining the prairie in good condition into the future.
