Abstract:
A vibration isolator is designed to reduce the vibration and structure borne noise transmitted from a vibratory source, such as machinery and equipment, to the supporting structure. The vibration and structure borne noise transmitted depends upon the dynamic properties of the foundation, the source mounting point and the vibration isolator. Therefore knowledge of the frequency dependent dynamic properties of vibration isolators is a necessary part of the acoustic prediction and control/reduction process. Vibration isolators may be characterised by measuring their four-pole parameters. A measu

The current momentum in plasmonics research was spurred on by the discovery of enhanced optical transmission. This phenomena results from the resonate coupling of electromagnetic surface waves on either side of a metal film. These waves are known as surface plasmon polaritons. By leveraging their ability to control light on the nanometric scale plasmonic structures are beginning to be integrated into a new generation of opto-electronics devices such as LEDS, photodetectors, photovoltaics and biosensors. This thesis presents a study into the inelastic earthquake response of asymmetric structures. The study was conducted through the use of numerical simulation and experimental testing. Previous studies into this area have often drawn contradictory conclusions regarding the effects of the various input parameters on structural response.
