Examples of its usage can be found in the global positioning system (GPS), radars and code division multiple access (CDMA) communication systems. Although widely used its performance is not studied in general case until recently. Partially this study is done in this thesis. If interfering signals like multipath or multiple access signals exist in addition to additive white Gaussian noise, as in GPS and CDMA, the correlator is not a maximum likelihood (ML) estimator. Progressive Type-II censoring was introduced by Cohen (1963) and has since been the topic of much research. The question stands whether it is sensible to use this sampling plan by design, instead of regular Type-II right censoring. We introduce an asymptotic progressive censoring model, and find optimal censoring schemes for location-scale families. Our optimality criterion is the determinant of the 2x2 covariance matrix of the asymptotic best linear unbiased estimators. In this report, the number of two-protected nodes in m-ary search trees is studied i.e., nodes with distance at least two to any leaf in the tree. This is of interest since the protected nodes describe local properties close to the leaves of the m-ary search trees. This is done by using a generalised Pólya urn model and relating this urn model to how the tree evolves after each new key is inserted into the tree. It is proven that the number of two-protected nodes in m-ary search trees is asymptotically normally distributed when m = 4, 5, 6 which is the main result. This is in agreement with pr

Abstract A new method for estimating joint distributions of environmental variables is presented. The key difference to previous methods is that the joint distribution of only storm-peak parameters is modelled, rather than fitting a model to all observations. This provides a stronger justification for the use of asymptotic extreme value models, as the data considered are approximately independent. The joint distribution of all data is recovered by resampling and rescaling storm histories, conditional on the peak values. This simplifies the analysis as much of the complex dependence structure i
