This is a study of the excavated cairns on Öland. The composition consists of three parts, the first part concentrates on what kind of re-uses there are of ancient monuments, the second part tries to tell why people did re-use burials and burial language, in the third part I have studied the excavated cairns on Öland and tried to see if the kinds of re-uses that were discussed in the first part can be seen on the ölandish cairns.
Keywords: re-use, cairns, Öland, burials, burial language
Abstract
Erlandsson, K-O. 2007. Återanvända fornlämningar. En studie av Ölands rösen. C-uppsats i arkeologi. Högskolan i Kalmar ht 2007.

Full textDrinking water is vital for our daily life. With climate change comes increasing temperatures and more extreme weather which can jeopardize our access to drinking water. One way to reduce our drinking water consumption is to collect rainwater and use it for processes which have lower quality demands than drinking water. Swedavia is constantly working on making their airports more environmentally friendly and as a part of this reducing the drinking water consumption. This project examines how water can be collected at Swedavia’s airports. The project results should be of intent to all of Swedavia’s airports even if the project is performed at Stockholm Arlanda Airport. In this project the water quality from five different types roofs has been studied. The different kind of roofs were chosen based on previous studies where pollutants in roof-harvested rainwater were studied. Other aspects such as location on the airports were also considered. Samplings were collected at two different occasions where water was collected from the different roofs. One sample of clean rainwater was collected as a reference. Five nutrients, dissolved organic matter, suspended matter and six heavy metals were analyzed. Three of the roofs gave water with high values that exceeded the quality limits. The samples from the green roof showed high levels of phosphorus and dissolved organic matter. The steel roof gave high levels of zink which may origin from its zink coating. The roof with PVC plastic also gave high levels of zink, but not as high as the steel roof. The roof with FPO plastic, a more environmentally friendly plastic, and the roof with roof paper gave low values and did not exceed any quality limits. The reference sample of clean rainwater gave high values of suspended matter at the second occasion and high values of lead that exceeded the quality limits. The conclusions of this project are that roof-harvested rainwater from green roofs, steel roofs and roofs with PVC plastic may exceed quality limits which makes them less suitable for collecting and re-use. The results are based on the two sampling occasions which means that sampling at more occations needs to be done to make definitive conclusions. The roofs with FPO plastic and roof paper do not exceed any quality limits and can therefore, according to the analyzed parameters, be suitable for collecting rainwater. It is important to note that to be able to reuse the water and guarantee that the quality of the water does not exceed any quality limits more parameters should be analyzed.

Full textIn this essay I analyze the situation of housing in today's Sweden, with a focus on Stockholm. What are the personal stories, memories, adaptings to the shortage of housing? What methods can be used, artistic and theoretical, to describe and question this situation? Background A home is more than the right pillows, a home is power. This is the main focus of the essay: to view the home as a source of power, and as always the power structures reveal themselves in a situation of lack. The lack af a steady home puts you in a position of little power. The politics of housing in Sweden has gone through a major shift during the last decades. In 1991 the ministry of housing was abolished. The former minister stated that a ministry of housing was no more relevant than a ministry of bikes or tooth-brushes. This iniciates a shift in views where housing is regarded as market goods among others. This was also accompanied with concrete political changes: the subventions and state-secured loans for buildings where abolished and the rate of building dropped, espacially of affordable rented appartments. Where the discussion before concerned ”a sound home for everyone”, the terms used in the political debate concerning housing today are dwelling career, will to pay, over-balanced demand. The politics have moved from a collective responsiblity into an individual carreer. Theory and method Since the politics have whitdrawn and made problems of housing individaul failures it is crucial to return to the old feminist slogan: ”the personal is political”. All the memories of black-contracts, stored furniture, matrasses in livingrooms, extra money payed for subletted apartments must make it into the public. Becauase, as Hanna Arendt states, the public sphere is where political change can occcur. In Michel Foucaults writing the outskirts of the ”net of power” is where the structures of it are most vivid. Therefore the it can be improtant to search the details, the body, the personal, the sites where we belive no history is to be found. In my own artistic work the details have always played a crucial role. One example is Vågar du borra i dina väggar? Spik mot betongvägg i andrahandslägenhet (Do you dare to drill in your walls? Nails against concrete-wall in sublet apartment) (2011) which consists of a collection of bended nails. In atnother very often qouted text Foucault describes surveilance in a prison, how the suspicion of constant surveilence makes you discipline yourself. This behaviour is also obvious in todays housing market in Stockholm. During a period when I stayed in an apartment on a black contract I started to notice my own behaviours. How I stopped listen to music, how I did my dishes quietly, in the end I even walked the floors carefully: too aware they were someones ceiling. This is the background to my piece Steglängd i ett svartkontrakt (Length of steps on a black contract) (2011) where 43 cm of thin thread is suggested to be tied around your ankles to decide your steps. In my soundpiece Ungdomen har blivit tråkig (The youth of today is boring)(2011) I list the adjectives used by persons looking for sublet arpartments to describe themselves. It's a long list of neat, steady, rich, clean, calm youth. Also my video Bakom min rygg (Behind my back) (2011) refers to the adapting of yourself. In the video you look through a fisheye-lens, a peep-hole, into an apartment. Slowly the camera moves through the rooms and finally backs out to the original position at the door. In the end of the essay I once again return to the discussion of power, and the connection between power and physical supplies. In the classical essay A room of ones own (1928) the author Virginia Woolf is asked to give a lecture on Women and Fiction. She comes up with a dense answer to what women need to be able to write fiction: 50.000 pounds a year and a room of their own. She describes how a heritage she gets gives her economic liberty, which she values even higher thän the new right to vote. The material supplies as an fundament for a voice of ones own. I think about what a home of ones own would mean in democratic gain. Over 80 years has passed since A room of ones own was written, some things change slowly.

Full textMany of the environmental problems that exist today can be connected to consumer behavior that directly impacts many parts of the environment. Clothing consumption has throughout the year increased dramatically and continues to grow. Engaging sustainably is not only about making green choices but also how to dispose of unwanted clothes in the best way possible. Which is vital to support future generations without depleting the earth’s resources. Knowing how to recycle and reuse clothes is one way to engage in a more sustainable consumption in resource-saving and financial favorability. Lingerie is often a category of clothing that falls between two chairs when discussing the recycling of clothes. This study aims to examine what women in Sweden today do when buying and getting rid of lingerie and what motives, reasons, and attitudes stand behind their actions. The result shows that the majority throw their lingerie in the household trash bin and that they experience it is difficult to recycle underwear. The other group that already recycles their underwear does it because of environmental reasons and claims that they do not find it hard to recycle. However, the attitude towards recycling underwear remains positive among everyone. In addition, the result shows that the majority has never bought lingerie secondhand before. The reason for this is that it is perceived to be unhygienic. The attitude remains positive towards that reuse of underwear is good for the environment and that it is more economic to buy underwear secondhand rather than newly produced. How the surroundings perceive secondhand underwear affects their attitude towards buying secondhand underwear. In order to increase the consumption of lingerie secondhand rather than buying newly produced ones, bigger changes are needed to change attitudes, perceived control and social norms. A bigger spread of knowledge about the relation between clothing (lingerie) and environment is needed and better solutions in collecting damaged and stained underwear more effectively.

Full textThe total amount of bulky waste has increased in the past years. The Swedish term grovavfall means bulky household waste which includes furniture and building materials. Re-use of products should be a priority to minimize waste according to Swedish law and the EU:s waste hierarchy. Reusing products is not only beneficial for the environment, but also has social and economic advantages. Every municipality in Sweden has the responsibility to constitute a waste management plan, which should include an action plan to minimize the amount of waste. At the same time the municipalities are responsible to handle the grovavfall created by households. The purpose of this study was to review Malmö city’s work with re-use to be able to present ways to improve their work. Content analysis by Malmö city’s waste management plan was used to understand how the city tries to improve re-use by the residents in the city. To see how the residents are experiencing the work by the city, we distributed surveys. The result of this study shows that some work by Malmö city has reached the residents. However, we have identified some deficits in Malmö city's communication. Infrastructure and accessibility was perceived as difficulties linked to re-use, which both are included in Malmö city's strategies and work. By communicate about re-use at every opportunity possible Malmö’s communication could improve, an influential group could also be established to guide the work. Furthermore, pay-as-you-throw could be introduced at recycling center to influence people to choose other disposal methods than to discharge. In addition, the internal work for re-use by Malmö through Malvin should be communicated to exemplify the work and inspire others.

Full textVintage fashion and secondhandclothing has gained new light in today's society. There has always been a secondary market for clothes, but now that it is called vintage, it has become very fashionable. More and more people are looking for the stores or locations that can provide their customers with the different garment that no one else has. But still, there is a mountain of clothes that litter our society. What’s causing this is our gigantic clothing empires that manipulate consumers with the "trendy" when it is due to excitement and exclusivity. How we as consumers behave after the consumption of our clothing is unclear for most of us. The reason may be that you do not ponder it as something impor¬tant because it is only clothing. Even clothing may contain chemicals that can pollute the environment. Every day the amount of waste in society increases and to deposit the waste at the landfill is no long-term solution. Dissolution of waste can lead both to pollution and highly concentrated and polluting wastes. We must become better at dealing with our garment waste so that it ultimately benefits both the individual and our environment. We have tried to describe what gives rise to the emergence of all these garment waste and also to provide information on how to handle the situation better. There are many different options to better manage our clothing consumption. The mountain of garment waste only grows so why not change clothes with each other, to borrow clothes from the clothes library, provide clothes for each clothing stores, donate it to a secondhand store or why not remake the clothes on your own.

Full textThe construction sector has a major impact on global warming and is estimated to have emissions of 15 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per year. The construction industry is also the largest consumer of raw materials, accounting for 50% of global steel production and consuming more than 3 billion tonnes of raw materials. Circular economics is an emerging concept in a wide range of sectors and industries for achieving a sustainable development. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the construction industry's view of circular economy in order to reduce the industry's climate impact. We want to explore how the construction sector can become climate neutral with the help of circular principles and initiatives such as LFM30, which is a local roadmap for achieving the global sustainable development goals for the year 2030, in order to contribute to a sustainable built environment. The analysis reveals how selected companies view circular economics and their knowledge of the subject. In order to realize the potential of the circular economy, different ways of working have been identified by respondents working within the subject, which can support the complex transition to a circular economy in the built environment.

Full textIn current situation [2019], Sweden is failing to provide preparatory plans for possible fire accidents in buildings with cultural-historical value. Because fire accidents on monumental buildings do not occur frequently, there is no standardized method on how to manage the restoration after the accident in a productive and sustainable manner. Purpose of the report is to produce a simplified standardized and measurable work process on how to improve arrangements during a fire accident on monumental buildings, where preventive measures, improvements during fire process and restoration of the building are included. The report is written with the aim of preserving good social sustainability and for preserving the Swedish cultural heritage for the future. The goal when restoring a cultural-historical heritage building is to maintain the classical appearance and to preserve the traditional and original condition. The main object reviewed is the cultural heritage building Kasern II on Skeppsholmen together with two more reference objects. The main object, where the fire accident takes place in September 2016, is today [2019] being restored after extensive moisture damage from the extinguishing work and fire damage to the material which was exposed to high temperature. Part of the standardized process is to describe how the choice of extinguishing agent can determine the extent of moisture damage to the material of the building and how pollution from the extinguishing agent and fire residues affect the neighboring environment from a sustainable point of view. Preventive fire protection and desirable fire protection after restoration work are also included. The report materially presents bricks and wood, which most often constitute the supporting structure and the floor structure of a cultural-historical building. By observing how wood materials and masonry react at high temperature and humidity, an assessment is made whether these materials can be decontaminated and reused or need to be discarded. In addition, with focus on restauration of the construction, decontamination methods for removal of fire odor and microbiological growth on wood materials are studied. Goal when restoring a building with cultural heritage is to maintain the traditional construction, therefore the solid brick and wooden beams are to be remedied to the extent required to preserve them. The choice of fire protection installations varies depending on the building's design and purpose. An example is the installation of sprinklers, which is a tradeoff between the risk of fire and the risk of possible moisture damage in the event of fire. Compressed air foam system [CAFS] is the extinguishing equipment used during extinguishing work on Kasern II which, compared to other extinguishing systems, emits less water therefore minimizing moisture damage. During the fire accident, updated drawings, documentation and action plans help the rescue service perform a functional extinguishing work. Bricks are resistant to fire as bricks are burned during manufacturing process. During a fire accident, bricks may crack if the sintering temperature is exceeded or in case of a rapid cooling during extinguishing work. Cracks can be restored with reinforcement on masonry. As cracks in brick are usually visible to the naked eye, bricks are reused if there is no visible physically damage to the material. The strength of wood material does not deteriorate when exposed to high temperature except in the burned part called char, which lies on the surface layer of the beam after fire exposure. The charring part can be mechanically planed away during sanitation. Mechanical planning is regarded as a relatively simple sanitation method and does not require any chemical environmentally impacting substances.

Full textThis essay aims at studying how swedish infantry regulations have changed from the invasion-deterring army of the Cold War to today’s modern expeditional army, but also to show likenesses between these. The essay is based upon two regulations, Infanterireglemente Skyttebataljon 1974 and Markstridsreglemente 6: Manöverbataljon Förhandsutgåva 4 2012, which are compared with an analytical tool constructed from elaborated and operationalized parts of the six basic abilities. The thesis shows that there is a difference concerning the use of indirect method in order to defeat the opponent, and also in the terms of mission tactics. Similarities can be found in the description delaying the opponent and the use of indirect fire.
