Full textFrom the critical study of 179 referred panathenaic amphorae, three main topics are developed by the author : variations of the Athena’s picture and of the surroundings, symbolism of the shield devices representing Athena, and relationship between these shield devices and the features represented on the face contemporary Greek coins. A chronological classification of the amphorae is proposed, according to the evolution of scene variations, which includes two dramatical changes : the appearance (around 520 bc) of series of devices, all dedicated to Athena, and the reversal, from left to right, of Athena ‘picture on the year 460 59. The author discusses the social and political events which could explain, at least partially, these changes as well as the reasons why these amphorae were no more produced after 312 bc. In addition, the author reports close relationships between the shield devices and the features of contemporary coins, namely those from Athens. These similarities do not seem to be fortuitous but were likely due to the political will of the city authorities. Finally, from the study of a special shield device representing the "tyrannoctons", characters of some other devices and coin types are discussed

Full textThe Goddess Athena is one of the most important deities of the Greek Pantheon because she has a main role as protector of cities. Thus, Athena has other roles often hidden under a warrior role and iconography. In Minor Asia we see Athena as protector of civic activity as well as protector of feminine activity just like the Anatolic and Near Oriental deities. And this role is known to VIII B. C. Until IV A. D. However, the religion is a part of the culture and civilization and develops with her, Thus, we saw differences between the regions of Minor Asia in the time and the space. These differences can help us to defined the cults of Athena in plural rather that in singular

Full textSince archaic period, Athena is a preeminent divinity of peloponesian pantheons whose workships, mainly urban, remain until the Roman epoch. This is what suggest the sixty-three cities where the worship of Athena is attested and the sixty epithets of the goddess known until the second century of our era. The study of the testimonia and the realia, concerning Athena and its sanctuaries on the peloponesian soil thus brings to wonder about the local character of the goddess and to study the context of it. So a first part is dedicaced to the topography of the places of worship devoted to Athena in the Peloponnese. It allows to observe, in regards to the territory configuration and its historical and religious context, the distribution, the installation and, possibly, the status of the sanctuaries. By the fact of their incomplete character, all kinds of sources are taken into account. The geographical, historical and religious context of each cities is considered, which enables to understand as far as possible the stead that Athena held there. The detailed map of the sanctuaries establishment thus drew up and the local particularisms so underlined, the miscellaneous aspects Athena can take depending on the place where she honoured become clear. A second part is thus dedicated to the worship data and the goddess's personality. It appears clearly that Athena is a complex divine power, whose prerogatives exceed the only civic and well-known political framework and to which the inhabitants of the region dedicate a particular attachment

Full textAthena’s reception in official imagery and pictures of power in the French 19th century shows the public authority’s legitimization processes, using the antic heritage. The period studied by this research (1789-1914) bears the marks of a precarious politic context, with unstable regimes and aims to highlight the distinctive characteristics and constants of these mechanisms. Archeological and historical researches of the 19th century build a more complete portrait of Athena, giving more importance to her iconography, and progressively distinguishing her from the Roman goddess, Minerva. Great warrior goddess, gifted with mètis, patroness of heroes, arts and crafts in Antiquity, Athena becomes, in a post-polytheism context, the allegory of Wisdom, the representative of Greece and its heritage, the protector of all intellectual and artistic activities and the guide of French rulers. She is used in imagery of military and cultural administrations, but also in power’s protection in general, and all its manifestations to the public, such as law’s field. Figure of legitimization, she can also embody power, regularly personifying high entities like France, Motherland or the Republic, being in competition with the allegory of Liberty, with the Phrygian hat

Full textThe study focuses on aspects of the myth of Kore-Persephone referring to Attica, its worship and its presence outside the civic religion. The first part focuses on the myth of Kore and different suggestions for the etymologies of names proposed by the Elders. The second part focuses on festivals and cults of Attica where Kore appears alone or alongside of Demeter: the Thesmophoria, the Eleusinian Mysteries, the lesser mysteries of Agra, Skira and Haloa, local Thesmophoria and Eleusinian worships, shrines and sacred sites related to the goddess. The third part is dedicated to the place of the goddess in magic, in Dionysian or Orphic religious connections (Society of Iobacchoi) and Artemidorus’ treatise on oneirocriticism. The fourth part contains the corpus of texts referenced in the work (literary sources, inscriptions and papyrus). An appendix is devoted to the image of Kore-Persephone in the works of Porphyry
