Abstract:
The aim of this study was to quantify peak age and improvements over the preceding years to peak age in elite athletic contestants according to athlete performance level, sex, and discipline. Individual season bests for world-ranked top 100 athletes from 2002 to 2016 (14,937 athletes and 57,049 individual results) were downloaded from the International Association of Athletics Federations’ website. Individual performance trends were generated by fitting a quadratic curve separately to each athlete’s performance and age data using a linear modeling procedure. Mean peak age was typically 25–27 y, but somewhat higher for marathon and male throwers (∼28–29 y). Women reached greater peak age than men in the hurdles and middle- and long-distance running events (mean difference, ±90% CL: 0.6, ±0.3 to 1.9, ±0.3 y: small to moderate). Male throwers had greater peak age than corresponding women (1.3, ±0.3 y: small). Throwers displayed the greatest performance improvements over the 5 y prior to peak age (mean [SD]: 7.0% [2.9%]), clearly ahead of jumpers, long-distance runners, hurdlers, middle-distance runners, and sprinters (3.4, ±0.2% to 5.2, ±0.2%; moderate to large). Similarly, top 10 athletes showed greater improvements than top 11–100 athletes in all events (1.0, ±0.9% to 1.8, ±1.1%; small) except throws. Women improved more than men in all events (0.4, ±0.2% to 2.9, ±0.4%) except sprints. This study provides novel insight on performance development in athletic contestants that are useful for practitioners when setting goals and evaluating strategies for achieving success.

Abstract:
The quality of performance during international competitions such as the Olympic Games and various world championships is often judged by the number of world records attained. The simple fact that world records continue to improve is evidence that sports performance is progressing. Does this also mean that athletes are improving? Is the continual progression of world-record performances evidence that contemporary athletes are superior to the athletes who performed in the past? Technological developments may obscure insight into the athletic enhancement made by athletes over the years. This commentary tries to separate technological and athletic enhancement in the progression of world records by the use of a power balance model.

Abstract:
In this article, I propose a new way of interpreting athletic metaphors in early Christian literature. I argue that the metaphorical figure of the athlete would have evoked for ancient readers not simply the ideas of competitive struggle, but also the idea of sexual abstinence, a lifestyle choice closely associated with athletes in the Greco-Roman world. The article collects and discusses evidence for the practice of athletic celibacy, drawing together a disparate collection of medical and philosophical literature, with Christian sources, from the second and third centuries CE. It demonstrates that athletic celibacy was a familiar concept in this period, and that many observers were interested in the methods that athletes used to control their sexual urges, including applying lead plates to their loin muscles. The treatment of this evidence suggests that there was greater interest in sexual abstinence among non-Christians than has previously been understood, and that athletes were implicated in controversies about whether or not total abstention from sex was a healthy lifestyle choice. As such, I argue that it is plausible to regard the athletic imagery of early Christians not only as a metaphorical comparison between two kinds of strident individuals, but also as advocacy for the celibate life as the most healthful lifestyle.

Abstract:
Between the two world wars, women athletics got emancipated, as both sport successes and the viewers’ interest contributed to the International Olympic Committee and International Amateur Athletic Federation topmen to accept women athletics. The representatives of the Czechoslovak Federation of Handball and Female Sports and other women sports contributed largely to the development and emancipation of women athletics, and were present at the foundation of the world federation. The women’s athletics popularity for European sport public rose mostly thanks to the stars of the track, throw, and jump disciplines at the international events. Women athletes from Poland and Czechoslovakia held up in the competition of big sporting powers, notwithstanding their much more humble training possibilities. This paper focused on the most successful Czechoslovak women athletes that were able to achieve interesting results at the biggest women athletics events and managed to change the historical world tables in athletics. Used sources included their period contemporary journals and magazines and some till now unpublished registry data.

Abstract:
Performance during human movements is highly related to force and velocity muscle capacities. Those capacities are highly developed in elite athletes practicing power-oriented sports. However, it is still unclear whether the balance between their force and velocity-generating capacities constitutes an optimal profile. In this study, we aimed to determine the effect of elite sport background on the force–velocity relationship in the squat jump, and evaluate the level of optimization of these profiles. Ninetyfive elite athletes in cycling, fencing, taekwondo, and athletic sprinting, and 15 control participants performed squat jumps in 7 loading conditions (range: 0%–60% of the maximal load they were able to lift). Theoretical maximal power (Pm), force (F0), and velocity (v0) were determined from the individual force–velocity relationships. Optimal profiles were assessed by calculating the optimal force (F0th) and velocity (v0th). Athletic sprinters and cyclists produced greater force than the other groups (P < .05). F0 was significantly lower than F0th, and v0 was significantly higher than v0th for female fencers and control participants, and for male athletics sprinters, fencers, and taekwondo practitioners (P < .05). Our study shows that the chronic practice of an activity leads to differently balanced force–velocity profiles. Moreover, the differences between measured and optimal force–velocity profiles raise potential sources of performance improvement in elite athletes.

Most mathematics teachers periodically look for real-world problems that they hope their students will find interesting and challenging. Since we are an athletically oriented society, situations with an athletic context are often appealing to students. Thus an ideal source for real- world problems is athletics. I found some interesting problems in the area of athletic tournaments.

Burnout research has predominately focused on individuals within the helping professions, such as teachers and social workers. Only recently have studies been conducted to include the sports world. However, these studies focus only upon coaches (Capel, Sisley, & Desertrain, 1987) and athletic trainers (Capel, 1986), not on athletes. This review examines the literature on burnout and specifically relates it to athletes. Major findings from the literature are identified. In addition, future directions in athlete burnout research are recognized, and possible variables contributing to athlete burnout are examined.

Abstract:
The Judo World Ranking List has been used to assess its predictive power regarding athletic performance. The aim of this study was to check if the ranking difference among athletes in the individual rankings could be used as a predictor for the outcome of mixed teams judo competition. We sought to verify the association between the variable “rank difference” and the probability of the higher-ranked athlete winning against that lower-ranked. This heterogeneity between athletes is a major factor in increasing or decreasing the team’s chances of winning. The higher ranked athlete’s defeat seems to have a significant negative effect on his/her teammates in subsequent bouts. These findings imply that future studies on mixed teams judo competitions should consider individual ranking differences among athletes as a predictor of performance.

Fisher, Brian. "Intercollegiate athletics and college rankings : an analysis of the relationship between athletic success and the U.S. news & world report college rankings." FIU Digital Commons, 2007. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/3344.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to gain a greater understanding of the relationship between athletic success of football and men’s basketball and the U.S News and World Report (USNWR) college rankings. There has been consistent debate among researchers who study institutional quality about whether intercollegiate athletics enhances reputation. This study is similar to other studies attempting to measure the relationship between athletic success and possible indirect benefits to the university from athletics, such as increased admissions applications and increased alumni donations and giving. This study offered a more nuanced model for measuring athletic success, a concept that has been difficult to measure quantitatively. The method used here also measured change over time (in this case, from year-to-year over an eleven year period). The research questions for this study were (a) is there a correlation between athletic success and the USNWR college ranking; and (b) is there a correlation in the change from year-to-year in athletic success with the change from year-to-year in the USNWR college rankings? Spearman Rho correlation and ANOVA tests were used to answer these research questions. The results from the statistical tests demonstrated little correlation between athletic success, whether in football or men’s basketball, with the USNWR college rankings. Although the relationships were weak, men’s basketball success consistently demonstrated a stronger relationship than football success. This finding differed from what is most often found in the literature, which often favors football success. The ANOVA test results did reveal some results that suggest athletic participation is a factor in the USNWR college rankings. As the debate continues about whether intercollegiate athletics enhances reputation, and as colleges and universities continue spending enormously on athletics, a keener understanding about the possible indirect benefits to the university from athletic programs is needed. The “advertising” provided by spectator sports such as football and men’s basketball is often assumed by university leaders to present substantial indirect benefits for the university. However, the existing research along with this study provides little evidence of such opportunities.

Abstract:
They played leading roles in the heyday of Brazilian basketball in the 50s and 60s. They represented the country triumphantly in a range of competitions, the most emblematic of their achievements being victories at the world championships in 1959 and 1963, and the Olympic bronze medals in 1960 and 1964. But although they enjoyed a certain level of notoriety as a result of these achievements, they weren\'t exempt from the implications of being amateur sportsmen. The athletic career as a profession was still a distant reality for them, and in order to be legitimate, their dedication to the sport had to be overwhelmingly voluntary and unpaid. These and other aspects decisively influenced both the way in which the two-time basketball champions managed their careers, and how they went through transitions, respectively. The objective of this research was to provide elements for the reflection and understanding of the phenomenon of career transition in sport, analyzing the significance and characteristics of this process through the narrative biographies of the two-time world champions Wlamir Marques, Amaury Pasos, Rosa Branca, Antônio Sucar, Carlos Massoni, Luiz Claudio Menon, Jatyr Schall, Waldyr Boccardo, Friedrich Fritz and Vitor Mirshawka. Analyzed in the light of Schlossberg\'s model of human adaptation and transition, and the theoretical reflections on career transition in sport, the narratives suggested that withdrawal from the role of an athlete, as well as the process of shifting to other spheres of life, were experiences decisively marked by the historical moment to which the two-time champions belonged. In this period where sport was an amateur affair, financial support for their athletic careers was scarce, a condition which required the athletes to adopt a strategy for managing their career which would unite sport training with education and gainful employment. This continuous compromise between athletic career and other interests gave the two-time champions such a close relationship with everyday life that the terminations and transitions of their careers were able to occur without great difficulties. The situations that give rise to this aspect of the transition are characterized by a multitude of activities making it necessary to prioritize interests; by the possibility of staying within or continuing with professional life within a sporting context as an instructor, coach or manager; by the possibility of success in other spheres of life, and, lastly, by the presence of informal support systems (family and friends). The narrative biographies brought further to light the difficulty faced by the two-time champions with regard to the reconciliation of their athletic careers with the world outside of sport, as well as the absence of formal support systems (institutional, specialized support, welfare for athletes) for the transition and life after sport

Poke, Robin, and n/a. "A case study of Olympic, World and Commonwealth Sculling champion Peter Antonie." University of Canberra. Health Sciences, 2006. http://erl.canberra.edu.au./public/adt-AUC20061207.104628.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a biographical case study of Olympic, World and Commonwealth sculling champion Peter Antonie, whose career at the elite or high performance level spanned some 23 years from 1977 to 2000. The thesis examines the exploits of an oarsman and sculler regarded within his sport as one of Australias greatest ever, despite his being considered physically disadvantaged at every phase of his career. Antonie was, most notably, a man of small stature widely considered a handicap at the level of rowing to which he aspired, and at which he ultimately succeeded. The study also examines what it was, despite those perceived disadvantages, that drove him to excel. The thesis further examines, in thematic form, parallel developments within Australian rowing and sculling in the quarter of a century in which Peter Antonie competed. This was a period during which fundamental changes were seen in Australian sport, notably in the areas of funding and administration, and which saw a transformation from amateur to professional participation at the Olympic, Commonwealth Games and world championships levels. There were also marked changes to high performance rowing as a result of technological advances that produced new types of equipment, and scientific developments that brought new training and selection methodologies. The research was carried out as part of a systematic attempt to examine and investigate Peter Antonies reputation, particularly as it compares with his better-known contemporaries, the so-called Oarsome Foursome, and to analyse that reputation in light of the administrative developments in Australian rowing and Australian sport. The historical approach used was the biographical method of research and analysis, with the preferred technique the obtaining of oral testimony from 50 interviewees, some of whom were interviewed more than once. The research clearly indicated that throughout his career Peter Antonie continually defied assumptions about his potential, particularly where science-based preconceptions about talent identification were concerned, and achieved success far beyond initial expectations. As a result his achievements, nationally and globally, are perhaps unparalleled, and he is held in the highest regard, particularly by the higher profile Oarsome Foursome. Despite this accolade, however, Antonies public profile remains very low, to the extent that beyond the rowing fraternity he is virtually unknown. Despite, too, rowings status as an Olympic sport and the commensurate increases in funding during Antonies career, he himself maintains a fundamentally amateur approach to his participation in rowing and is critical of several facets of its current professional administration. Despite, too, rowing and sculling once being among Australias major sports a hundred or so years ago, within contemporary Australian society it has a low profile, a situation which, given that current administration, appears likely to continue. Problems encountered during the research included some diffidence on the part of an essentially humble and self-effacing subject and a lack of literature relating to Antonie and his sport. But these were to an extent offset by the enthusiasm displayed for the project by other interviewees. The results of the research are significant in that, like the subject, they defy some precepts concerning facets of Australian rowing and sculling, which in turn might encourage further investigation.

Abstract:
The use of computer systems in sports has increased significantly in the last decade. Consequently, systems have been developed to help each athlete or team quantify their performance, such as distances traveled, speeds attained, and positions where each athlete was on the court or field. In this work, a method based on computer vision is proposed to analyse futsal matches. Videos were acquired using a single camera with a wide-angle lens, which facilitates the installation and calibration process in different matches and arenas. The approach is illustrated through video recordings of Pato Futsal team, from which the athletes were detected, their positions projected from pixels to real world coordinates their trajectories estimated. The generated data visualization aims to help coaches in their physical and tactical analysis.

Abstract:
Professional sports are increasingly dependents of technological resources given the remarkable level of competitiveness faced by high performance athletes. With such resources, it is possible to analyze matches, avoid mistakes that may be committed by the referee or even to analyze the athletes’ performance. One of these sports is beach volleyball, one of most popular sports in Brazil. In the past 12 years, the Brazilian volleyball teams has been always among the best teams in the world. The athletes’ performance during the jump movement is one of the main factors that one team needs to improve to be successful because it is the movement that is most performed during a volleyball match. There are some approaches that study the jump movement in order to calculate its height and give evidences to improve it. Nevertheless, these solutions are expensive and are not viable to athletes with no sponsorship. Having this in mind, this works presents VolleyJump, an application created to analyze beach volleyball athlete jumps using machine learning strategies to calculate the jump height and classify it as an attack or block jump. Results show that VolleyIoT makes possible to analyze athletes’ jumps using mobile devices sensors, helping them to focus on their trainning to improve its technique.

Abstract:
Running is one of the most practiced sports around the world and it dates back to Ancient Greece. Running became an Olympic sport in 1896 and today is mostly performed for fun and to stay in shape. Nowadays, athletic shoe companies make claims on the performance of the type of shoes they manufacture. Some of their claims include shoes that allow free movements, fit like a glove, and are in complete harmony with human mechanics. The preceding characteristics are those of so-called barefoot running shoes. Robillard [1] explains that minimalist running shoes could be defined as those that provide limited or no support and only minimal protection, with the heel at the same level as the forefoot. Even though running may have been investigated, however, there is not enough analyses on barefoot running shoes. The objective of this study was to investigate the load distribution on the feet of a healthy running adult wearing barefoot shoes through experimental work and finite element analysis (FEA). The methodology used in this study included experimental as well FEA. Tests were conducted with a 175-lb adult subject wearing a pair of minimalist shoes. Experimental data were collected and used to perform Finite Element Analysis. The barefoot shoes were modeled with an equivalent thickness of 0.453 inch, and the following parameters were experimentally determined such as the Young’s modulus of 467 psi, a density of 0.0025 lb/in3, and a Poisson’s ratio of 0.08. The simulation results yielded a maximum compressive stress of 38.71 psi in the toe region. This stress level was approximately one-half of the stresses generated in the heel region of conventional sport shoes. This study, further, revealed the reduction of stresses at the heel region with barefoot shoes resulting in lower risk of pain and injury to the foot in the absence of impact transients ordinarily experienced with conventional shoes.
