Fisher, Brian. "Intercollegiate athletics and college rankings : an analysis of the relationship between athletic success and the U.S. news & world report college rankings." FIU Digital Commons, 2007. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/3344.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to gain a greater understanding of the relationship between athletic success of football and men’s basketball and the U.S News and World Report (USNWR) college rankings. There has been consistent debate among researchers who study institutional quality about whether intercollegiate athletics enhances reputation. This study is similar to other studies attempting to measure the relationship between athletic success and possible indirect benefits to the university from athletics, such as increased admissions applications and increased alumni donations and giving. This study offered a more nuanced model for measuring athletic success, a concept that has been difficult to measure quantitatively. The method used here also measured change over time (in this case, from year-to-year over an eleven year period). The research questions for this study were (a) is there a correlation between athletic success and the USNWR college ranking; and (b) is there a correlation in the change from year-to-year in athletic success with the change from year-to-year in the USNWR college rankings? Spearman Rho correlation and ANOVA tests were used to answer these research questions. The results from the statistical tests demonstrated little correlation between athletic success, whether in football or men’s basketball, with the USNWR college rankings. Although the relationships were weak, men’s basketball success consistently demonstrated a stronger relationship than football success. This finding differed from what is most often found in the literature, which often favors football success. The ANOVA test results did reveal some results that suggest athletic participation is a factor in the USNWR college rankings. As the debate continues about whether intercollegiate athletics enhances reputation, and as colleges and universities continue spending enormously on athletics, a keener understanding about the possible indirect benefits to the university from athletic programs is needed. The “advertising” provided by spectator sports such as football and men’s basketball is often assumed by university leaders to present substantial indirect benefits for the university. However, the existing research along with this study provides little evidence of such opportunities.

Abstract:
They played leading roles in the heyday of Brazilian basketball in the 50s and 60s. They represented the country triumphantly in a range of competitions, the most emblematic of their achievements being victories at the world championships in 1959 and 1963, and the Olympic bronze medals in 1960 and 1964. But although they enjoyed a certain level of notoriety as a result of these achievements, they weren\'t exempt from the implications of being amateur sportsmen. The athletic career as a profession was still a distant reality for them, and in order to be legitimate, their dedication to the sport had to be overwhelmingly voluntary and unpaid. These and other aspects decisively influenced both the way in which the two-time basketball champions managed their careers, and how they went through transitions, respectively. The objective of this research was to provide elements for the reflection and understanding of the phenomenon of career transition in sport, analyzing the significance and characteristics of this process through the narrative biographies of the two-time world champions Wlamir Marques, Amaury Pasos, Rosa Branca, Antônio Sucar, Carlos Massoni, Luiz Claudio Menon, Jatyr Schall, Waldyr Boccardo, Friedrich Fritz and Vitor Mirshawka. Analyzed in the light of Schlossberg\'s model of human adaptation and transition, and the theoretical reflections on career transition in sport, the narratives suggested that withdrawal from the role of an athlete, as well as the process of shifting to other spheres of life, were experiences decisively marked by the historical moment to which the two-time champions belonged. In this period where sport was an amateur affair, financial support for their athletic careers was scarce, a condition which required the athletes to adopt a strategy for managing their career which would unite sport training with education and gainful employment. This continuous compromise between athletic career and other interests gave the two-time champions such a close relationship with everyday life that the terminations and transitions of their careers were able to occur without great difficulties. The situations that give rise to this aspect of the transition are characterized by a multitude of activities making it necessary to prioritize interests; by the possibility of staying within or continuing with professional life within a sporting context as an instructor, coach or manager; by the possibility of success in other spheres of life, and, lastly, by the presence of informal support systems (family and friends). The narrative biographies brought further to light the difficulty faced by the two-time champions with regard to the reconciliation of their athletic careers with the world outside of sport, as well as the absence of formal support systems (institutional, specialized support, welfare for athletes) for the transition and life after sport

Poke, Robin, and n/a. "A case study of Olympic, World and Commonwealth Sculling champion Peter Antonie." University of Canberra. Health Sciences, 2006. http://erl.canberra.edu.au./public/adt-AUC20061207.104628.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a biographical case study of Olympic, World and Commonwealth sculling champion Peter Antonie, whose career at the elite or high performance level spanned some 23 years from 1977 to 2000. The thesis examines the exploits of an oarsman and sculler regarded within his sport as one of Australias greatest ever, despite his being considered physically disadvantaged at every phase of his career. Antonie was, most notably, a man of small stature widely considered a handicap at the level of rowing to which he aspired, and at which he ultimately succeeded. The study also examines what it was, despite those perceived disadvantages, that drove him to excel. The thesis further examines, in thematic form, parallel developments within Australian rowing and sculling in the quarter of a century in which Peter Antonie competed. This was a period during which fundamental changes were seen in Australian sport, notably in the areas of funding and administration, and which saw a transformation from amateur to professional participation at the Olympic, Commonwealth Games and world championships levels. There were also marked changes to high performance rowing as a result of technological advances that produced new types of equipment, and scientific developments that brought new training and selection methodologies. The research was carried out as part of a systematic attempt to examine and investigate Peter Antonies reputation, particularly as it compares with his better-known contemporaries, the so-called Oarsome Foursome, and to analyse that reputation in light of the administrative developments in Australian rowing and Australian sport. The historical approach used was the biographical method of research and analysis, with the preferred technique the obtaining of oral testimony from 50 interviewees, some of whom were interviewed more than once. The research clearly indicated that throughout his career Peter Antonie continually defied assumptions about his potential, particularly where science-based preconceptions about talent identification were concerned, and achieved success far beyond initial expectations. As a result his achievements, nationally and globally, are perhaps unparalleled, and he is held in the highest regard, particularly by the higher profile Oarsome Foursome. Despite this accolade, however, Antonies public profile remains very low, to the extent that beyond the rowing fraternity he is virtually unknown. Despite, too, rowings status as an Olympic sport and the commensurate increases in funding during Antonies career, he himself maintains a fundamentally amateur approach to his participation in rowing and is critical of several facets of its current professional administration. Despite, too, rowing and sculling once being among Australias major sports a hundred or so years ago, within contemporary Australian society it has a low profile, a situation which, given that current administration, appears likely to continue. Problems encountered during the research included some diffidence on the part of an essentially humble and self-effacing subject and a lack of literature relating to Antonie and his sport. But these were to an extent offset by the enthusiasm displayed for the project by other interviewees. The results of the research are significant in that, like the subject, they defy some precepts concerning facets of Australian rowing and sculling, which in turn might encourage further investigation.

Browning, Ella. "Rupturing the World of Elite Athletics: A Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis of the Suspension of the 2011 IAAF Regulations on Hyperandrogenism." Scholar Commons, 2016. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/6189.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2011 the International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) published the Regulations on Hyperandrogenism, a health policy banning female athletes from track and field competition if their natural levels of testosterone were found to be higher than those of most female athletes. In 2014, Dutee Chand, a sprinter from India, was banned from competition based on these regulations. She appealed her ban in the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and as a result the 2011 IAAF Hyperandrogenism Regulations were suspended for two years. The issues at stake in the suspension of these regulations are, at their core, rhetorical issues related to health and medical technical communication: how information about health and medicine is communicated to stakeholders, the ethics of such communication, and the implications of such communication. They are also issues related to the medical regulation of sex and gender: Chand’s case is the latest in a history of sex verification testing of elite female athletes that began well before 2011. In this study I use feminist critical discourse analysis methods within the computer assisted qualitative analysis software program NVivo to analyze the 2011 IAAF Hyperandrogenism Regulations and the transcript of the CAS Award that suspended them. I argue that the 2011 IAAF Regulations and the CAS Award are an example of what I describe as a closed, Foucauldian system, which is not open to outside voices, stakeholders, expertise, or evidence. I also argue for the use of a heuristic alongside a feminist technical communication perspective on health and medical rhetorics that technical communicators might use to insert themselves into closed Foucauldian systems such as this one in order to enact positive change.

Abstract:
The top endorsed athletes in the world are most likely the ones who have the biggest impact on their sport. These athletes are usually among the best in their sport or they might have something special that creates a strong relationship between the athlete and his or her fans. It is possible to say that this relationship combined with their skills on and off of the fields, courts, or arenas is what makes these athletes special. Big companies all over the world feel attracted to these athletes and, as a result, they spend millions of dollars every year in order to make these athletes the face of their companies. This research investigates the relationship between the monetary values of the top 50 most endorsed athletes in the world and their behaviors. Companies spend millions of dollars every year on endorsement deals, so it is important that they pick the right athlete to represent them. Furthermore, the athletes that are being endorsed need to know if there is a possibility of gaining or losing endorsements based upon their behaviors. The methodology in this research utilizes Analysis of Variance to investigate this relationship.

Guyot, Jessica. Thesis, Lyon, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016LYSE2106/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The structure of the « pôle espoir » is characterized by hosting a training of elite sport within school education. There are many researches about the formation of an elite athlete, but most of the studies are focused on the socialization to athletic performance regardless of school socialization. This research aims to balance the look between school work and sports work as part of an interactionist approach of the social worlds in reference to the work of Becker (1982) and Strauss (1988). It relies on an ethnographic survey of more than three years, conducted in two “pôles espoirs” (rugby and synchronized swimming) chosen for their similar structures (boarding school, urban settlement) and especially their differentiated characteristics (gendered marking, contrasting sports cultures). It is supplemented by 18 in-depth research interviews with students-athletes, coaches, teachers and doctors. We want to study what the actors actually do to articulate the sport world and the school world. The “pôle espoir” is understood as a dynamic and negotiated organization in which the world of elite sport and the school world interact, intersect and even overlap. We make the hypothesis that there are differentiated worlds in a “pôle espoir”, it allow us to capture, through clashes and negotiations, singular designs of the situations in which actors are engaged. In addition to ordinary time, the research pays particular attention to the time of trial: injuries, poor performances, academic difficulties. These times of trial help to highlight the usual logic and reveal the adjustments implemented by the different actors (teachers, school director, coaches, but also students-athletes). The social order in a “pôle espoir” is not only determined by gender roles and the rules governing them, but by complex interactions, negotiations, types of figuration (Goffman, 2003). The thesis shows a representation less mechanistic and more dynamic of “pôles espoirs”. It highlights the investments and negotiations that create an imbalance in favour of the sport world, in ordinary times, as well as in time of trial. The social worlds approach allows us to take into account the work of the family and introduce the world of health to understand the articulation of the activities. By their movement between the worlds and the different types of representation to which they are forced, young students-athletes are major players in the articulation between school and sports activities. The career prospects and values of sports systems result in different adjustments

Abstract:
Com exceção do triplo-salto, nas restantes especialidades de saltos, o período de retorno (i.e., número de máximos individuais) até à ocorrência de um novo recorde do mundo é menor nas mulheres do que nos homens; ABSTRACT: Statistics of Extremes: limits of human performance - study with throwers and jumpers in athletics Extreme events are rare, but when they do occur, they have an enormous social impact and they receive a considerable media attention. Such is the case of world records in sport – they rarely happen, but when they do, not only are they disclosed by all media, but they also cause changes in the training methodology and in the athlete's behaviour. How to predict this occurrence? What is the probability of occurrence? What is the magnitude of the occurrence? How long is the wait? The extreme value theory, based on the Fisher-Tippett-Gnedenko theorem, provides a rigorous framework for analysing extreme values, estimating the probability of the occurrence of events that are beyond the sample. Thus, research within the area of Extreme Statistics provide information to answer the question “what is the limit of human performance?” in the framework of high-performance sport, particularly in the case of the specialties of throwing and jumping in athletics. The methodologies used were: (i) r-largest order statistics, (ii) peaks over threshold, and (iii) non-stationary annual maximum. Once decided the limit distribution of the maximum associated with the event under study and the model that best fits the available data, the point estimation of the extremal parameters were performed by maximum likelihood estimation, with Nelder- Mead or BFGS optimization and the interval estimation using the delta method and the profile loglikelihood function. In each method, several models were tested. We used graphical techniques, stability of standard errors, confidence intervals, hypothesis tests and some error metrics, to verify if the models fit the available data. We were particularly interested in the estimation of extreme quantiles, exceedance probability, right endpoint, return levels and return period. The results suggest that in hammer, discus and javelin throwing there are a strong probability of a new world record will be achieved. In the case of male, throwing events, the forecast of a new world record being achieved with reduced probability. With exception of triple-jump, in all other jumping specialities, the return period (i.e., number of individual maximums) until the occurrence of a new world record is shorter in women than in men.

This study was to analyze and compare the official results of the Men’s and Women’s 400M Hurdles of the 1999 World Championships in Athletic With the relationship between different trials and reaction time. The results are as follows: : 1. There was no significance difference(P>0.05)between trails and reaction time in both Men’s and Women’s events which indicate that the result of the 400M Hurdles are not affected by reaction time. 2. There are significant differences(P>0.05) in the eight finalists of the Men’s event in different trials with the best result in the final whereas the semi-finals are better than the preliminary trails with level of significance difference (P>0.05). 3. There were significant differences (P>0.05) in the eight finalists of the Women’s event in different trails with the best result in the final. There are no significance difference (P>0.05) between the semi-finals and the preliminary trails by the time difference of 0.43 seconds and between the final and the semi-finals by the time difference of 0.44 seconds. However there is the significance difference(P>0.05) between the final and the preliminary trails. 4. The results indicate that both the athletes of the Men’s and Women’s 400M. Hurdlers try to reserve their energy and physical strength for the finals and with little intention in breaking the record during preliminary trails and semi-finals.

The purpose of the study was to understand development, development dilemma, organizational structure, training methods of competitive dragon dancing and athletic performance in Asia. The subjects were dragon and lion dance athletes, coaches, and team staff who participated in the 2018 world championship (N=117). Survey techniques was used to investigate the four orientation of development of competitive dragon dancing in Asia, and athletic performance in the games. Abstract:
Submitted in partial compliance with the requirements for the Master’s Degree in Technology: Chiropractic, Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa, 2015.
Background: The 19th Iteration of the World Transplant Games was hosted in Durban, South Africa in 2013. This biennial, international, multisport event showcases the talents of transplant athletes, whilst demonstrating the benefits of organ transplantation. To date, limited research is available on transplant athletes. This study aimed to determine the injury profile of transplant athletes who presented to the Durban University of Technology Chiropractic Treatment Facilities during the 2013 World Transplant Games. Methods: This retrospective, descriptive cohort study analysed the data collected at the Chiropractic Treatment Facilities at the 2013 World Transplant Games. For inclusion, each WTG Form required completion, reflecting all the elements of that participant’s chiropractic consultation. The data recorded on the World Transplant Games Form generated the data analysed in this study. The data described the frequency (frequency tables), nature and management of injuries treated at the Chiropractic Treatment Facilities during the 2013 World Transplant Games. In order to determine relationships cross tabulations were used. Results: There were 964 athletes registered for the 2013 World Transplant Games, of which 153 presented to the Chiropractic Treatment Facilities (an utilisation rate of 15.9%). A total of 259 consultations by the athletes (n = 223; 86.1%) and non-athletes (n = 36; 13.9%) were recorded. The majority of the treated athletes were White (n = 91; 59.5%), males (n = 109; 71.2%), in which kidney transplant recipients accounted for 37.3% (n = 58) of the total number. Track athletics had the highest injury rate (34.5% of all reported injuries). Athletes sustained injuries to 14 different anatomical regions, with the thigh (26.9%) and shin/calf (20.5%) being the most frequently injured. The majority of injuries (n = 164; 66.4%) were “overuse” injuries, with myofasciitis, muscle strains and thoracic facet syndrome being the most frequently obtained diagnoses (25.5%, 16.6% and 6.5% respectively). The most frequently employed treatment modalities were those of massage (32.1%), ischemic compression (16.3%) and manipulation (13.4%). It was noted that the most injuries sustained (88.3%) were not severe enough to result in an inability to continue current or future participation. Conclusions and Recommendations: Transplant recipient athletes injuries concur with the literature on non-transplant athletes, indicating that solid organ transplantation does not predispose the athlete to different or more serious injuries which would require different management protocols by health care personnel treating these athletes. Further investigation into individual sports is encouraged, to develop accurate, effective injury management and preventative strategies to more appropriately diagnose and treat injuries incurred by transplant athletes and then to prevent them from recurring. An informed healthcare approach towards event organising and athlete treatment will improve preventative strategies and athlete management.

This study is to analyse the competitions of College Games 2012, National Expert Players’ tournaments 2012, and Men’s Judo games of Beijing Olympic Games 2008. To comprehend the differences of overwhelming techniques adopted by Taiwanese Judo athletes and the top-ranked Olympic Judo athletes, there were 376 Judo athletes in total of 482 games being analysed. The “video observation analysis” method was employed during these games to collect the basic data on overwhelming techniques, and the data then was analysed in Descriptive Statistics and Chi-square Test. Some studies showed that during the competitions, our athletes used more Judo techniques than Te-Waza and strategies, differentiating the Olympic Judo athletes, who used more Te-Waza, Ashi-Waza, and Masutemi-Waza techniques. It also showed that our Judo athletes were low in attaching, and their physical ability was also insufficient to handle the whole game, which come apart from top-ranked Olympic Judo athletes.Based on the study listed above, one should realize that in addition to the integrity of Judo techniques and practical physical training, the practice of leg technique and MASUTEMI-WAZA attacking technique should be strengthened. Moreover, the ability of URA NAGE in MASUTEMI-WAZA to defeat opponents should be strengthened as well. Constructing excellent physical condition and skilful techniques, one should win Judo competitions with adequate offending and defending strategies.
