Abstract:
Air quality monitoring is one of several important tasks carried out in the area of environmental science and engineering. Accordingly, the development of air quality predictive models can be very useful as such models can provide early warnings of pollution levels increasing to unsatisfactory levels. The literature review conducted within the research context of this thesis revealed that only a limited number of widely used machine learning algorithms have been employed for the modelling of the concentrations of atmospheric gases such as ozone, nitrogen oxides etc. Despite this observation th

This thesis describes the undertaking of multiple studies designed to evaluate and reduce global modelled surface O3 biases in CTMs/ESMs. Specific focus is placed on the evaluation of rural surface O3 seasonal variability in a global CTM (GEOS-Chem). A major observational data collation is undertaken, processing 1,033,463,750 measurements of O3 and some of its major precursors, from 16,996 sites, through a number of rigorous data quality checks, to ensure data is of a high enough quality for global model evaluation. Ground-level ozone is an environmental and public health issue. Daily ozone forecasts are made to allow people to take precautions to protect their health. For this study, a prototype laser that measures ozone concentrations vertically throughout the atmospheric boundary layer was evaluated as tool for ozone forecasting. To examine this data, three analyses were performed. First, it was determined if stratification, and thus residual layers, could be seen. This was conducted, in part, by examining hourly mixing heights overlaid onto color-coded NEXLASER charts. Each NEXLASER chart shows the

The Earth’s atmosphere constitutes a complex system subject to a large number of forcings of both natural and anthropogenic origin; these influence its evolution on a range of timescales. Firstly, following recent improvements in the model, the atmospheric response to the solar cycle forcing simulated in UMUKCA is discussed.
