Abstract:

Walker, Kara, and Brian Hare. Bonobo baby dominance: Did female defense of offspring lead to reduced male aggression? Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198728511.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
The dominance style of bonobos presents an evolutionary puzzle. Bonobos are not male dominant but female bonobos do not show traits typical of female-dominant species. This chapter proposes the offspring dominance hypothesis (ODH) as a potential solution. ODH suggests the social system of bonobos evolved as a defence against infanticide and is not due to pressure to monopolize resources. Females that prevented aggression towards offspring and preferred mating with less aggressive males were most successful. Supporting ODH, during observations at Lola ya Bonobo Sanctuary it was found that: 1) adult male bonobos are rarely aggressive towards offspring with mothers, 2) some mother-reared juvenile bonobos attain rank higher than adult males and 3) mother-reared offspring often socially interact with adult males without their mothers nearby. These preliminary findings provide initial support that the bonobo social system evolved due to fitness advantages of effectively protecting offspring against consequences of male aggression.

Abstract:
Starting from a discussion of imitation and parody in Cervantes’ Don Quixote, this chapter moves through Charlotte Lennox’s The Female Quixote to her compilation of sources, Shakespear Illustrated (1753–4). Objections to Shakespeare’s derivativeness, of the kind advanced by Lennox, go back to Robert Greene’s pamphlet Greenes Groatsworth of Witte (1592), where the dramatist is denounced as an ‘vpstart Crow, beautified with our feathers’. To reconstruct the methods of Elizabethan playmaking is to find that the recycling of plays, poems, and prose romances on stage was standard. Competitiveness among players and playwrights led to accusations of plagiarism. What gives an edge to the accusation that Shakespeare is a crow in borrowed plumage is the notion of him as an upstart. Drawing on texts about acting, fashion in hair and dress, and the fashioning of plays, discussion moves from the Groatsworth to Much Ado as a comedy about upstarts that turns on borrowed attire.

Yamamoto, Shinya, and Takeshi Furuichi. Courtesy food sharing characterized by begging for social bonds in wild bonobos. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198728511.003.0009.

Full text
Abstract:
Food sharing has played an important role in the evolution of cooperation, especially in hominization. Evolutionary theories regarding food sharing have been based mainly on chimpanzee meat sharing. However, in bonobos, our other closest evolutionary relatives, food sharing occurs in considerably different ways than it does in chimpanzees. Bonobos often share plant food, which can often be obtained without any cooperation or specialized skills, sometimes even when the same food items are abundant and easily available at the sites. The characteristics of bonobo food sharing appear to be at odds with previous hypotheses, such as reciprocity and sharing under pressure, and urge us to shift our viewpoint from the food owner to the recipient. This chapter proposes that recipients beg to strengthen social bonding as well as to gain access to the food itself. Frequent fruit sharing among bonobos may shed light on the evolution of courtesy food sharing to enhance social bonds in a resource-rich environment.

Full text
Abstract:
The nature of the relationships between males is a characteristic trait of many multi-male group living species with implications for the individuals. In our study population of bonobos, certain male dyads exhibit clear preferences for ranging in the same party and sitting in proximity. These preferences are not reflected in the frequency of aggression towards each other and only to some extent in their affiliative and socio-sexual behaviours. While bonobo males at LuiKotale clearly do not benefit from close relationships in the way chimpanzee males do (cooperative hunting, territorial patrol, mate competition), some relationships might result from close associations between their mothers. In some particular situations, these male relationships can be very important as in the case of an orphan adopted by his older maternal brother.

Abstract:
[Introduction]. To mark the 40th anniversary of the Declaration of Alma-Ata, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) convened the Regional Forum “Universal Health in the 21st Century: 40 Years of Alma-Ata” on December 11-12, 2017, in Quito, Ecuador. As part of this regional movement, PAHO Director Dr. Carissa F. Etienne convened a High-Level Commission: Universal Health in the 21st Century: 40 Years of Alma-Ata, chaired by Dr. Michelle Bachelet and Ambassador Néstor Mendez, and made up of an interdisciplinary group of regional experts, including representatives from communities and academia, as well as political actors, such as former health ministers, trade union leaders, and representatives of different social movements. The objective of the Commission was to develop recommendations for the PAHO Director on how to give effect to the right to health as a fundamental human right, based on an analysis of the progress and challenges faced by health systems in the Region of the Americas. This document reflects the Commission’s position regarding primary health care (PHC), the search for solutions to ensure the right to health, and the approach taken in discussions, analysis, and recommendations on how to guarantee this right. It is based on reports prepared by the five thematic groups addressing: a) health care model, b) institutional model, c) financing model, d) health and social protection, and e) human resources for health (see annexes to the present report). The thematic groups were led by members of the Commission, bringing together a great number of academic experts and social movements from different countries in the Region. In this report, the Commission presents 10 recommendations for achieving health for all in the Region of the Americas in the 21st century.

The reforms to music in Prussian schools that are associated with Leo Kestenberg fundamentally influenced the understanding of music as a subject, which had only just been established as such at that time anyway. In 1921, Kestenberg laid down his concept of education in his work ‘Musikerziehung und Musikpflege’ (Musical Education and Fostering Music), in which he outlined the main aspects of a comprehensive educational concept and, in so doing, laid the foundations for the various reforms that led to the transformation of education in terms of the promotion of music in both public and private. Led by a former Senator from Tennessee, Luke Lea, a handful of American soldiers take leave over the New Year’s holiday and drive up to the Netherlands with the aim of kidnapping Kaiser Wilhelm II. The Dutch envoy in Brussels gives them a laissez-passer and authorises them to enter his country in uniform. When they get to Amerongen Castle, they brandish the document but fail to convince Count Bentinck’s son to let them meet the Kaiser in person. The Dutch are suspicious, and surround the castle with troops, forcing the Americans to retreat, stealing a monogrammed ashtray on their way out. The US Army holds a disciplinary inquiry, but Lea and his cohorts get little more than a slap on the wrist. They return to civilian life at home and boast of their adventure.

Abstract:
Play, especially in its social form, is an enigmatic and multifunctional behaviour that is essential for the development and maintenance of a great variety of individual and social competences in many social species. Bonobos are recognized as one of the most playful species and they can be used as a model to evaluate the importance of social play at all ages, given that they play at high frequencies even as adults, thanks to their developmental delay. By summarizing what is known about play behaviour in bonobos and in other primate species, this chapter sheds light on the importance of social play in scaffolding the socio-emotional and communicative competence of individuals. Results obtained on bonobos allow the strong links between play in adults and social tolerance, a connection that becomes evident also in other species, including our own, to be revealed.

Abstract:
This chapter looks at Dante’s great textual invention, Beatrice, as both the empowered beloved turned addressee as discussed in Chapter 2 and a powerful textual construct as seen in Chapter 3. I argue that Beatrice’s unique trait is what I call her ‘lyric irreducibility’—a rather resistant aspect of her character, which follows her all the way to the vision of God. Such a trait is posited already in a figure that lays in the archaeology of Beatrice, the unsteady joining of the lyrical and the doctrinal in Dante’s first and failed rendition of his woman interlocutor: the donna gentile-Lady Philosophy, who complexly negotiates the ending of the Vita Nova and the beginning of the Convivio. The chapter follows Beatrice in her development as a non-silent lyric addressee (in Inferno), as textual construct that talks back (in Purgatorio), and as glossator and lector (in Paradiso).

Abstract:
The agreed, major sources of King Lear are the anonymous history play King Leir and Sidney’s Arcadia. To these and other early modern ‘originals’ this chapter adds classical tragedies by Seneca, Euripides, and Sophocles—most conspicuously his Oedipus at Colonus, which was readily available in Latin translation. The ancient tragedies resonate with King Lear thanks to conventions of literary imitation that were well understood in the Jacobean period, but their presence is also symptomatic of a drive within the play to get back to the origins of nature, injustice, and causation. The influences of Plutarch and Montaigne are also highlighted. The portrayal of death (or the illusion of it) and the desire for death, in the play and its sources, are analysed. Focusing on the scenes at Dover Cliff and the division of the kingdom/s, this chapter moves to a new account of the complications of the play’s conclusion in both quarto and Folio texts.

Abstract:
This collective work contains fourteen scientific contributions related to Translation and Interpretation in Sub-Saharan Africa. The subtitle ‘The New Challenges in a Multilingual Space’ is at the heart of the concerns of the authors, who often blend their undeniable professional experience with their university status. Their analyses, written in French and English, cover at least seven different countries, and sometimes describe realities and challenges that largely transcend borders. Numerous issues that are closely intertwined are addressed including multilingual education, professional training of interpreters and translators, community interpreting, the needs of governments and international organizations, the development of lexical resources, language engineering, etc.

Abstract:
We illustrate the central role the bonobo plays in testing evolutionary hypotheses regarding ape minds (including our own). The importance of bonobos has become apparent only recently with sustained fieldwork at multiple sites in the Congo Basin as well as the first direct quantitative comparisons between bonobos, chimpanzees and humans. This recent work has revealed a number of traits in which bonobos and chimpanzees are more similar to humans than they are to each other. This means that bonobos are crucial to determining the evolutionary processes by which cognitive traits evolved in our own lineage. Based on the evidence within, it becomes clear that one can no longer know chimpanzees or humans without also knowing bonobos. We argue this makes investing in bonobo research and improved protection for bonobos in captivity and the wild an even higher priority.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
One of the most variable features of the contrast between Quarto and Folio King Lear has to do with speeches to and about elements of the natural world. ‘King Lear and the Death of the World’ interrogates the play’s vitalism: its treatment of natural elements as independent agents with wills and sentiments of their own. In this play, uniquely for Shakespeare, four characters address elements of the natural world directly. Investigation of the play’s intermittent vitalism brings into greater focus its bleakness at the end, which features not merely the deaths of most of the central characters but also, arguably, the death of the world.

Abstract:
This chapter summarizes the Chicago Police Department’s adoption of Intelligence-Led Policing (ILP) since the early-2000s as a crime prevention and deterrence strategy. It reviews the use of technology such as police observation devices (cameras), the centralization of the Police Department’s data operations at the Crime Prevention and Information Center, a sophisticated data analytics “fusion center,” and examines changing technologies of surveillance used by the police. The authors discuss the integration of police surveillance with privately-owned and operated camera systems, and explore how systems like facial and license plate recognition software and gunshot prediction technologies are reshaping security and policing in Chicago. The chapter also assesses concerns about privacy and eroded civil rights provoked by the expanding use of ILP techniques and data.

Abstract:
Wildlife sanctuaries rescue, rehabilitate, reintroduce and provide life-long care for orphaned and injured animals. Understanding a sanctuary’s population dynamics—patterns in arrival, mortality and projected changes in population size—allows careful planning for future needs. Building on previous work on the population dynamics of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) in sanctuaries of the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA; Faust et al. 2011), this chapter extends analyses to the only PASA bonobo sanctuary. Its authors analysed historic demographic patterns and projected future population dynamics using an individual-based demographic model. The population has been growing at 6.7 per cent per year, driven by arrivals of new individuals (mean = 5.5 arrivals per year). Several model scenarios projecting varying arrival rates, releases and breeding scenarios clarify potential future growth trajectories for the sanctuary. This research illustrates how data on historic dynamics can be modelled to inform future sanctuary capacity and management needs.
