Abstract:
Chapter 5 describes how the concept of quantization (discretization) was first applied to atoms. This was done in 1913 by Niels Bohr, using Ernest Rutherford’s paradigm-changing, solar-system model of atomic structure, wherein the positively charged nucleus occupies a tiny central space, much smaller than the known sizes of atoms. Bohr, postulating a quantized version of this model for hydrogen, was able to explain previously inexplicable experimental features of that atom. He did so via an ad hoc quantization procedure that discretized the single electron’s energy, its angular momentum, and t

Abstract:
This article describes quasi-ballistic electron transport in atomic wires. It begins with a review of experiments on the conduction properties for single metal atoms. Nearly all the information on the properties of such nanocontacts should be extracted from the current and voltage only. Nevertheless, a wide range of techniques has been developed to obtain detailed information. The article proceeds by considering various experimental techniques for characterizing single-atom contacts, along with their application for the study of conducting chains of individual metal atoms and for metal–molecul

The challenges to colonize non-branch locations by banks were first touched on Chapter 5. This discussion continues in Chapter 7 (‘Independent ATM Deployers’) on how populating those locations comes about by the combination of an economic incentive (surcharging), the development of the so-called ‘low end’ ATM, and the diversification into the payments space of second-party processors. This chapter starts to bring the discussion to contemporary themes as IADs are increasingly recipients of outsourcing banks’ strategies to the extent that some of the biggest IADs control networks across continen

Nobody doubted that atoms were real once atomic energy was developed, but in the early 20th-century and before their existence was widely doubted.DefendingMaterialismfollows the political and theoretical background of this intense philosophical controversy, defending atomistic and mechanical materialism against idealist paradigms. These accounts range from the explicit idealism criticised by Lenin and Einstein to the implicit Hegelian idealism that influenced Soviet dialectical materialism. Following several key threads, the authors trace how the idea of atoms has changed over the centuries, h

Abstract This book concerns particle dynamics, where the term “particle” covers a wide range of shapes and sizes, from atoms to asteroids. While this book considers particles with fixed sizes, the main focus is on particles that grow and shrink over time, due to random or chaotic processes or events, such as inelastic or partially elastic collisions. Prior books on this subject typically focus on just one or a few applications in aerosol science, astrophysics, polymer science, and so forth. In this specialized literature, particle growth is referred to by terms such as aggregation, agglomerati

This book contains spectra of the doubly charged positive ions (dications) of some 75 molecules, including the major constituents of terrestrial and planetary atmospheres and prototypes of major chemical groups. It is intended to be a new resource for research in all areas of molecular spectroscopy involving high energy environments, both terrestrial and extra-terrestrial. All the spectra have been produced by photoionisation using laboratory lamps or synchrotron radiation and have been measured using the magnetic bottle time-of-flight technique by coincidence detection of correlated electron

It was logical to expect that the European Economic and Monetary Union would lead ineluctably to an autonomous European defense; the very size of the European Union seems to demand it. The EU eventually will reach the point where its economic and demographic weight will far exceed that of the United States. Can it not be expected too that the EU will seek to make this weight felt internationally? Cogan tracks the halting creation of an independent European military structure, a third way between national armies and ATO, since the Iron Curtain's fall.
