Abstract:
In Plato’s eponymous dialogue, Timaeus, the main character presents the universe as an (almost) perfect sphere filled by tiny, invisible particles having the form of four regular polyhedrons. At first glance, such a construction may seem close to an atomistic theory. However, one does not find any text in Antiquity that links Timaeus’ cosmology to the atomists, while Aristotle opposes clearly Plato to the latter. Nevertheless, Plato is commonly presented in contemporary literature as some sort of atomist, sometimes as supporting a form of so-called ‘mathematical atomism’. However, the term ‘at

The texts of several seventeenth century Jesuits - Suarez, Pereira, Arriaga and Oviedo - are examined here. Present in these texts is an attempt to develop a natural philosophy alternative to the Aristotelian one, capable of retaining its distance from impious atomism, but, nonetheless, adopting certain central aspects concerning belief in discontinuity and indivisibles. In his Meditations, Marcus Aurelius repeatedly presents a disjunction between two conceptions of the natural world. Either the universe is ruled by providence or there are atoms. At 4.3, we find perhaps its most succinct statement: ἀνανεωσάμενος τὸ διεζευγμένον τό⋅ ἤτοι πρόνοια ἢ ἄτομοι (recall the disjunction: either providence or atoms). The formulation of the disjunction differs; at 7.32, being composed of atoms is contrasted with a stronger sort of unity (ἕνωσις) that may survive death. In 10.6 and 11.18 Marcus simply offers φύσις (nature, construed in the Stoic manner as providentialist a

The word ‘continuum’ invokes a controversy that endured for more than two millennia. Aristotle contended in his Physics that a continuum (such as length, time or movement) cannot be constituted by indivisibles nor be resolved into them. Though Augustine decreed the thought of Epicurus long dead, interest in Atomism persisted into the late medieval period, long before its ‘rediscovery’ in the Renaissance. Given Beckett's marked empathy for Atomism, and the wide assumption that Atomism anticipated the radical paradigm shifts of the new physics of his day, a scrutiny of this School and of ‘the in

Although the theory of atomism was postulated by Greek philosophers, such as Democritus, Epicurus, and Leucippus 2500 years ago, it remains inspiring for chemists. It is worth considering how this theory, without scientific evidence, could so closely correlate with conclusions derived from experimental results achieved by physicists and chemists since the 19th century. Physics has refuted the notion of the indivisibility of atoms; on the other hand, subatomic particles no longer carry the qualitative attributes of matter. In the dialogue that follows his dissemination of the Meditations, Descartes reveals that a whole set of concepts and rational principles innate in our minds are never doubted. The truth is that the rise of this new style of philosophizing did not come out of nothing, but it rather emerged from a set of objective reasons, including the religious reform and scientific advance or renaissance, that v

Abstract:
Under the concept of atomic settlement, the time between the trade and the settlement of transactions is reduced to a very small fraction of time (e.g., seconds or less), making them instantaneous. A second feature is the exchange of all the assets in the transaction in a single event, making them simultaneous — no delivery or payment occurs if the others do not occur too, commonly known as delivery versus payment (DvP) or payment versus payment (PvP). Making the settlement of the transaction instantaneous and simultaneous may have several benefits. It could effectively mitigate risks to all p

Hill, Christian. Consultancy Meeting on Evaluation of Fundamental Data on Beryllium-containing Species for Edge Plasma Modelling. IAEA Nuclear Data Section, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.61092/iaea.t5at-c64q.

Abstract:
Beryllium is a major plasma-facing material in the ITER fusion energy research reactor, where 440 beryllium-coated panels form the first wall (FW) of the vacuum reactor vessel. It is expected that plasma–wall interactions will result in the creation of a complex mixture of atomic, ionic and molecular species containing He, Be and isotopes of H. The aim of this meeting was to advise the IAEA Atomic and Molecular Data Unit on the data required for modelling edge plasma processes in fusion devices and to recommend state-resolved data sets for electron-collision excitation, de-excitation and disso

Abstract:
This Table gives recommended values of static magnetic dipole moments of excited states of atomic nuclei throughout the periodic table having lifetimes < ~ 1 ms. To aid identification of the states, their excitation energy (in keV), half-life, spin and parity are given. The literature search covers the period to June 2020. Research sponsored by the IAEA Nuclear Data Section, International Atomic Energy Agency.

The Japanese cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki represent the horrors of war as places of the hundred-thousandfold killing of humans with scientific and industrial means. And as such Hiroshima and Nagasaki (to a lesser degree) became dominant symbols within global memory culture. In my paper I will juxtapose this form of commemoration with what Jeffrey Alexander claimed was an ongoing universalization of the Holocaust as a symbol of radical evil. This universalization also supposedly led to the globalization of aesthetic standards in museum designs of memorial museums worldwide, deriving from Holoc

Abstract:
The 21st meeting of the Subcommittee on Atomic and Molecular Data of the International Fusion Research Council (IFRC) was held on 3-4 May 2018 at IAEA Headquarters in Vienna, Austria. Activities of the Atomic and Molecular Data Unit for the period 2016–2018 were reviewed and recommendations were made for continuing activities in 2018–2020 and for possible new projects in the 2020–2021 budget cycle. The proceedings, conclusions and recommendations of the Sub-committee meeting are briefly described in this report.
