AbstractBackgroundUltra-weak photon emission (UPE), or biophoton emission, is a phenomenon observed in various living organisms, including plants. In this study, we analyzed the UPE from ripening strawberry fruits, to elucidate its source and association with cellular energy.MethodsFreshly harvested and stored strawberry fruits were measured for levels of UPE and energy molecules adenosine triphosphate (ATP), adenosine monophosphate (AMP) and adenosine diphosphate (ADP). The associations between them were calculated.ResultsIn ripening fruit, a decrease in UPE positively correlated with declini

The effects of exogenous nucleotides on adenine nucleotide metabolism and cell cation levels in normal and O2-deprived isolated rabbit kidney tubules were studied to gain insight into ways in which exogenous nucleotides could contribute to ameliorating O2 deprivation-induced injury. High concentrations of extracellular ATP inhibited gluconeogenesis from lactate and pyruvate but not from glycerol or fructose. ADP, AMP, or adenosine but not guanosine 5'triphosphate, inosine 5' triphosphate, or adenine also inhibited gluconeogenesis. alpha, beta-Methylene-ATP, a nonmetabolizable structural analogue of ATP, did not affect the rate of gluconeogenesis. Adenylates are metabolites with essential function in metabolism and signaling in all living organisms. As Cofactors, they enable thermodynamically unfavorable reactions to be catalyzed enzymatically within cells. Outside the cell, adenylates are involved in signalling processes in animals and emerging evidence suggests similar signaling mechanisms in the plants’ apoplast. Presumably, apoplastic apyrases are involved in this signaling by hydrolyzing the signal mediating molecules ATP and ADP to AMP. Abstract:
Thrombin (0.O5 and 0.5 u/ml), ADP (10 uM), PAF. (30 nM), vasopressin (vp, 0.018 u/m1 ), arachidonate (AA, 10 uM), U46619 (0.125 ug/ml) and A23187 (2OO nM) induce aggregation ATP secretion, TxB2 generation and a rapid elevation of intracellular calcium (Ca2+i) concentration provided the medium contains 1 mM extracellular Ca2+. Phorbol ester (TPA) induces aggregation and secretion with no alteration in [Ca2+i]. Pre-incubation with Fab fragments of Ml48, a monoclonal antibody against GPIIb/lIIa, completely abolished aggregation in response to all agonists without affecting Ca2+i flux. ADP and A23
