Full textThe contemporary models stress that the human development implies a process of continual Co-construction between the individual and his immediate environment. The present thesis examines the factors of the development of the child which would have a role of precursor of the psychosocial adaptation. Our sample gathers 231 children (106 Québécois and 125 French of 20 and 54 months) coming families from socio-economic medium average and attending, full-time nurseries in the centre town of Montreal as well as cribs and nursery schools of the centre town of Bordeaux and Toulouse. The psychosocial adaptation of the children is measured with questionnaire APSE made up of 12 scales which gather in six dimensions making it possible to release five modes of adjustment. The early temperament is evaluated using “Toddler Temperament Scale” gathering in five dimensions and three typologies. The primary attachment is measured with “Q-Leaves Attachment” gathering in seven dimensions and three classifications. A first analytical stage proposes discriminants analyses enabling us to show that the simple models (only one built as predictor of the adaptation) give worse results than the complex model (which integrates the two types of information). Nevertheless, the complementarity of these two kinds of indicators of the adaptation leads to the operationnalisation of the concept of character like precursor. The results indicate whereas this new indicator of the adjustment is more interesting to model with some three year old children and more. The interest of these results lies in their demonstration of the relevance of a complex model to represent the dynamics of the psychosocial adaptation of the young children and of a modeling of the character for oldest

Full textStudy of narratives is a bridge between attachment theory and psychoanalysis. It is explored by philosophy with the narrative identity concept, by psychoanalysis with concepts of linking and secondary process, by attachment with correlations between early interactions and narrative coherence development. We explore the concept of narratives from different angles and especially narrative identity by Paul Ricoeur (1990). To assess therapeutic process, we follow the narrative evolution during psychotherapy. In our present study, we follow up narratives evolution of children with psychopathology during analytic therapy. A cohort of thirty six children (neurosis, borderline and psychosis) from four to eleven years old is follow up during four years with every year assessment with ASCT (Bretherton et al. , 1990) coded with CCH (Miljkovitch et al. , 2008). Results show significant progression of attachment representations and narrative from the first year of therapy. Children with neurosis improve content and form of their narratives as early as the first year. Psychotic children improve form before content of their narratives. Narratives of borderline children show no significant evolution during analytic therapy. We discuss this result with attachment and psychoanalytic points of view

Full textThis study first examines links between parental adult attachment style and their memories of attachment with their own parents. Secondly the quality of the child's attachment with both parents is evaluated. The objective is to identify adult attachment representations that are indicative of anxious parent – child relationships. Parents from 74 families in Toulouse (44 girls and 30 boys) were visited at home when children were between 24 and 39 months. Both parents completed three questionnaires. 1) The Parental Bonding Instrument, PBI (Parker & al. , 1979; Gamsa, 1987; Mohr & al. , 1999). 2) Experiences in Close Relationships-Revised (Brennan & al. , 1998; Fraley & al. , 2000; Lafontaine & Lussier, 2003). 3) Child attachment was assessed with the Attachment Q-Set (Waters & Deane, 1985; Pierrehumbert & al. , 1995; Strayer & al. , 1995). Results indicate: (a) mothers classified as “avoidant” remember their own mothers as ambivalent. Fathers “anxious-avoidant” profile is associated with a sentiment of rejection and lack of caring from both parents. (b) Mothers “avoidant” adult strategies are associated with a representation of their child's attachment as also being “avoidant” while “avoidant” fathers describe their children as “resistant”. Anxious mothers describe their children as “dependant”. However, Fathers' anxiety does not differentiate children's attachment profiles. (c) There is a link between parental perceptions of the child's dependence and remembered bonds with their own parents. Mothers reporting controlling parents in childhood describe their children as dependent. Inversely fathers reporting low parental control in their own childhood describe their children as “independent”. (d) Finally, analyses of three way interactions reveal that mothers who describe their own parents as ambivalent (overprotection and feelings of rejection) consider their children as least sociable. This holds true even for mothers whose adult attachments are identified as “secure”. In fathers' data, we observe negative effects of fathers “avoidant” and “anxious-avoidant” styles on their perception of children's autonomy. Fathers' remembering of ambivalent attachment relations in childhood is linked with their child's obtaining lower scores on social sensitivity and differential response

Full textThe aim of this study is to know if some aspects of social and school adjustment of 3 to 5 year old children are specifically linked with attachment to mother and more particularly with attachment to father. In this way, specific attachment representations to mother and to father of 138 children were explored with a french adaptation of the Attachment Story Completion Task (Miljkovitch & al. , 2003), peer intercations were observed during free play sessions at school, behaviour problems were evaluated with a french adaptation of the Child Behavior Check List (Fombonne, 1988) filled out by mothers and chilren’s school adjustment was evaluated with a teacher questionnaire (Florin, Guimard & Nocus, 2002). Results show that wether some aspects of social and school adjustment are specifically linked with attachment to mother and to father, some others seem to be simultaneously linked with attachment to both parents. Finally, whereas very strong links between quality of attachment relations and representations to both parents were found, taken together our results suggest that children develop independent relationships and specific attachment representations to mother and to father. Moreover, these results lead us to reconsider the way to evaluate quality of attachment relationships and to explore children’s specific attachment representations

Full textThis study aims at understanding psychological issues implemented in self-writing with Attachment Theory and Pschoanalysis. We recall the historical context and the emergence of philosophical subjectivity and sensitivity reported with rationality, from the perspective of Michel Foucault. The binding process, sublimation capacity underpinned by narcissistic investments and countenance needs are highlighted in literary autobiographies. We show that subjectivation arouses in the early interrelations and is continuing throughout life. The concept of "narrative identity" introduced by Paul Ricoeur connects the ontological and narratological perspectives. Recent propositions made to patients in palliative care and oncology services, leads us to question the value of writing. We report two experiments proposed to teenagers : writing workshops at the time of hospitalization in the Institut Curie in Paris and writing testimony in hospital of Nantes. We perform an analysis in the context of their socio-ethical development : Art Therapy, Narrative Medicine, Philosophy of care and supportive care. We question their validity and legitimacy. We hope to contribute to the debate on assessment requirements. Both intrasubjective and interpersonal, writing can metabolize experience. It is however necessary to preserve the singularity and psychological conflictuality to which psychoanalysis is able to answer

Full textThe objective of this research is to exam the existence of an attachment bond of the younger towards his elder and to show that the elder can be qualified tutor for his younger in a situation of tutoring interaction and lastly, characterize the sibling relationships. We evaluated on a population of 40 siblings (elder : 4-9 years ; younger : 3-4 years) the quality of the sibling attachment bond using an adaptation of story completion task procedure. The elder representation of their sibling relationships is measured with the Sibling Relationships Questionnaire. Lastly, the tutorial interactions within the sibling were observed using a categorization test. Main results highlight that the elder is a "relay attachment figure" for his younger and establishes with him a "relation of proximity-exploratory". The sibling tutorial is characterized by direct assistances and sister use a "guiding supervision" whereas brother use a "freedom supervision". Lastly, there is a modulating tendency of elder representation on the sibling relationships on the existing sibling attachment bond and sibling tutorial interactions

The first studies undertaken since ten years, in particular by the Observatory European of School Violence reveal a serious situation from which no type of establishment escapes. There always were difficult pupils, this concept is not new, but it seems today to take a new direction in a context of handing-over in question of the bases of a school system which pains to adapt to the massification. The observation is made that violence at the school has receipt the statute of social problem. This violence within the school was already approached by researchers who have, far from releasing a factor of single explanation, shown a tangle of process, family, school, youthful events which, in their mutual steppings, create the conditions favorable to the school course of rupture. Full textThe objective of this study was to assess attachment representations of mothers with visual impairment and the quality of attachment of their children. A longitudinal and prospective study of 12 dyads of mothers with visual impairments and their baby was made when children were aged from 3 months to 4 years. Attachment representations of mothers were investigated using the Ca-Mir which had to be adapted to their special needs. A semi-structured interview allowed to describe the mothers'own chilhoods. Attachment behaviors of children were observed when they were aged 18 months with the Strange Situation and when they were aged 4 years, attachment representations were explored using the Attachment Story Completion. An analysis of early interactions with the CIB at 3, 6, 9 and 15 months was also performed to assess, among other criteria, maternal sensitivity. The results show a less secure attachment profile, more detachment and less concern among mothers with visual disabilities than among mothers from a control group. During the Strange Situation test, children of visually impaired mothers appeared to be significantly more insecure than children of a control group. The task of Attachment Story Completion showed a deterioration of the categories of attachment between the ages of 18 months and 4 years. Finally, the analysis of early interactions showed that visually impaired mothers have a maternal sensitivity of lower quality than mothers in a control group. The results of this study show the importance of taking special care of these mothers and their children

Full textWith the purpose of analyse child's socio-emotional development, the dynamic of the foster care, and the psychological process of significant adults for the infant, we hypothesize that parent perception of his own implication, and foster parent parenting affect foster-infant socio-emotional development, especially child's attachment representation and social competences. The sample of this longitudinal and qualitative research was composed by 38 children in foster care, 32 foster-mother and 36 biological parents. In the first time the age of the children was 52 months and in the second time the age was 57 months. Tools used are: the “Attachment story completion task”, the “Social Competence and Behaviour Evaluation”, a “Questionnaire of parent-s implication” and a semi-directive interview. Results show that parent's, foster-mother and social assistance's representations of parental implication are different, especially with respect of parent-child interactions and parents competences. On the other hand, 19 of 32 foster-mothers show a parenting that make differences between the foster-child and theirs biological own children, especially in the education and the affective implication. Additionally, 70% of foster-children have a secure attachment representation (like non foster-children, Main & Solomon, 1990), and 30% of children have an insecure deactivated attachment representation. According to “Social Competence and Behaviour Evaluation” criteria, we found that 84% of the infants have and excellent socio-emotional adaptation

Full textThe disorders specific to the oral language, also called dysphasia, are disorders in which the standard modes of language acquisition have been altered from the very early stages of development. This study has been conducted around dialogue between developmental psychology which allows to diagnose dysphasia and psychoanalysis which opens a debate on the psychic issues through narrativity as a place of the symptom's expression. Expression itself, pronunciation are consequently modified. Therefore, what about the fantasmatic expression when words fail? What does a language disorder mean? This research aims at the longitudinal and prospective study of narrativity and of the attachment profiles among 46 children with specific language impairment who did the attachment story completion task. The results highlight significant differences compared to the control group regarding attachment (a predominance of insecure, deactivated and disorganized representations and of narrativity. Regarding the evolution, we reach the conclusion there are stable attachment modes. The attachment representations of mothers have been explored with the Ca-Mir and prove to be secure. No obvious links with those of their insecure dysphasic children have been established, which differentiates them from the dyade controls. The psychic implications of language impairment have shown the separation issue was highly at stake

Full textThis is a comparative study of selective mutism, taken from a population of 30 children comprising 15 immigrant children and 15 non immigrant children whose disorder was noted before the age of 5. The aim is on the one hand to propose an ethio-pathogenic hypothesis which brings to light, with the appearance of the child's mutism, the development of an " anxious-avoidant" attachment as an underlying mechanism. On the other hand, through the presentation of 2 clinical cases, it aims to underline the effects of the programme of progressive introduction of speech in a school environment. This recent method enables the child's mutism to disappear by modifying his social interactions. This study is based on an interview with each child with the administration of projective, cognitive and school tests. The « MSSB » was used to measure these representations of attachment in situations of separation. The scale of evaluation of selective mutism designed for this study shows first of all that the level of interference of the disorder in school activity is "moderate" for both groups. It also underlines the fact that the immigrant children often have a "severe" selective mutism but that they benefit more rarely from treatment than non-immigrant children. In view of these results, selective mutism covers a heterogenous population of children who can present language problems and whose cognitive level is average and below average. Particularly often under-diagnosed in immigrant children, mutism is total at school and apppears in a mixed context inside and outside the family it is acquired in early childhood at the time of language acquisition in a subject with a shy temperament. In conclusion it would be advisable to envisage it as the child's emotional response which finds its origin in an attachment disorder developped during specific circumstances

Full textThis study has two main objectives ; First, to describe the developmental Tate of children who have suffered from shaken baby syndrome white documenting the construction of the child-mother attachment bond ; Second, to understand the complexity of the interrelationships between the medical and relational aspects. This study adopts a long-term perspective involving 45 children evaluated at 12. 18 and 48 months old. A control group composed of children diagnosed with simple craniostenosis has been used for comparison. Psychomotor development was tested using the Brunet Lénine method. Cognitive development was addressed using the WPPSI-III test, Child temperament has been assessed using the QT6 questionnaire, and the social withdrawal behavior by using the Alarm Distress Baby Scale. Behavioral disorders were assessed using the questionnaire Child Behavior Check List and attachment behavior was evaluated using the Strange Situation protocol. Maternal sensitivity was assessed using Ainsworth's Maternal Sensitivity Scale, Results of the psychomotor and cognitive development assessments suggest that there is a link between an initial status epilepticus (in addition to young age) with short and long term low test scores. Child temperament and maternal sensitivity were not shown to be linked to the shaken baby syndrome. Social withdrawl was observed in 23% of the cases and were associated with admission to a child care unit at a young age based on their serious initial medical state, and early relational disorders. Paradoxically, the attachment behavior secure has been found over-represented and the attachment behavior avoidant insecure attachment as been shown to be under-represented

Full textIn the field of research about juvenile sexual offending, the clinical and psychopathological perspective remains prevalent. Few empirical studies and explanatory models suggest a developmental perspective of sexual delinquency among young people. To overcome this important limitation, this exploratory study aimed to better describe and explain the continuity and discontinuity trajectories of sexual behavior problems during childhood and adolescence. A random sample (n = 80) consisting of young persons who were referred to Quebec’s Child Welfare system for sexual behavior problems has been used for this research project. Three groups of young people showing distinct developmental trajectories were identified and compared. The results of comparative analysis show some significant differences, especially regarding family and behavioral aspects. Despite these differences, this study shows mainly the presence of significant similarities between the three groups, which explains in part the theoretical and conceptual lack of precision surrounding the explanation of the continuity and discontinuity trajectories of sexual behavior problems in childhood and adolescence. Theoretical, conceptual and methodological leads are proposed in order to improve the actual state of knowledge regarding the development of sexual behavior problems.

Full textThis study focuses on socio-cognitive development of children with intellectual disability due to Down Syndrome (DS). Links between attachment representations and, respectively, social behavior with peers and attributions of intentions in ambiguous social conflict situations were examined. Thirty children with DS aged 8 to 12, 30 controls matched on level of reasoning (CR) and 36 controls matched on chronological age (CA) participated in the study. Attachment representations were assessed with the Attachment Story Completion Task (Bretherthon et al., 1990), social behavior with the Teacher Assessment of Social Behavior (Cassidy et Asher, 1992) and attributions of intentions with a new experimental task we developed. Attachment representations were associated with both social behavior and attributions of intentions among DS and CA, but not among CR. These findings emphasize the importance of attachment quality for sociocognitive development of children with DS. Children with DS showed developmental specificities which are believed to lie on an implicit and inflexible representational format of information: the more insecure they are the more likely they are to internalize a negative model of relationships via procedural learning, possibly leading to lower levels of prosocial behavior and more hostile attributional biases in ambiguous social situations. Clinical implications are discussed

Full textPreterm children are at risk of behavioral problems, and parenting stress may influence the development of these difficulties. The main goal of this study is to contribute to a better understanding of the role of parenting stress in the process that links preterm birth and internalizing behaviors in very preterm children. Two statistical models were compared to see whether parenting stress is a mediator or a moderator of the relationship between preterm birth and internalizing behaviors. The second goal was to compare the value of two indicators of prematurity severity, gestational age and neonatal acute physiology evaluated by the Score for Neonatal Acute Physiology-II (SNAP-II) score, as predictors of later internalizing problems. A cohort of 118 children born at less than 29 weeks of gestational age and their parents was recruited. Parenting stress was evaluated by the French version on the Parenting Stress Index (PSI) and internalizing behaviors were evaluated by the internalizing scale of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). These measures were obtained by parental report when the children turned 5 years. The results showed that parenting stress was neither a mediator nor a moderator of the relationship between prematurity and internalizing behaviors. Moreover, Both gestational age and SNAP-II score failed to predict internalizing behaviors at 5 years. However, parenting stress was positively associated with higher internalizing behaviors. This study shows that parenting stress did not participate in the association between prematurity and internalizing problems, but showed a direct association with internalizing problems. Our findings highlight the importance of family environment in the resilience of preterm children.

Full textThis study suggests studying the transmission of the attachment from one generation to another in a specific population, and the role of resilience in this transmission. In a psychodynamic and systemic approach, we observe the impact of the past of the first generation to their parenthood and to their children. Our research relies on two premises. The first is that the family history and the context of foster care is a traumatic experience. According to the second postulate, the people of our clinical corpus are founded in a process of resilience. Our population is composed of 24 subjects of the first generation (G1) whose peculiarity consists in the fact that in their infancy, they were separated from their families of origin and lived in a foster care. The research also includes 20 adult subjects (G2), who are children of the foster persons (G1).A semi-structured interview and the test of Ca-MIR Pierrehumbert et al. (1996) represent the main tools. The data collected were subject to a category-specific analysis, statistical processing and analysis software with Alceste Reinert (1993). Our results confirm our assumptions and indicate a marked improvement in the quality of attachment to the second generation. While over 70% of the G1 are insecure, 95% of the G2 use the secure primary strategy. However, the attachment of subjects who suffered trauma remains unchanged despite subsequent relations reassuring. The second generation, although secure, holds the injury done to the parent. These results lead us to reconsider the intergenerational transmission of attachment and to adjust the parenting support offered to the people who came from foster care
