Abstract:
Japan has maintained a very low crime rate and a correspondingly high clearance rate for a long time, but recently the circumstances surrounding criminal investigation have been changing remarkably. In order to compare criminal investigations among the developed countries, it will be very informative to consider the situation in Japan. This article gives a brief introduction to the conditions for, and characteristics of, police criminal investigations in Japan. The first part explains the background to investigations, for example limited legal competence, the cooperative attitude of citizens and changing circumstances in recent times (the increase in the number of offences, new demands from the public and victim support). In the second part, the characteristics of police criminal investigations are noted, that is organised investigations, forensic investigations and countermeasures under the new criminal situation.

Abstract:
The contribution of different working methods and learning environments to grade nine students’ performance in biology as well as their attitudes towards biology as school subject were studied. The research is based on the data collected for the assessment in natural sciences at comprehensive schools by the Finnish Board of Education in 2011. The survey data of the present study consisted of 2989 ninth grade students from 97 comprehensive schools. Students’ performance in biology was clearly correlated with the positive attitude towards biology as a school subject. There were strong correlations between the performance and teaching approaches, which emphasize students’ activity in experimental investigations, making observations, pondering of causes and effects as well as applying knowledge to everyday live. These inquiry-oriented approaches correlated also with the positive attitude towards biology. There were also correlations between positive attitude to biology and teacher-led conversations, pondering of different viewpoints, taking account of students’ opinions and ideas in teaching and the methods emphasizing students’ autonomy and self-evaluation. Positive attitude correlated also with the teaching approach, by which students received information about the development, structures and mechanisms of the world. Directed teaching did not correlate with the performance in biology or the positive attitude towards biology. To enhance students’ performance and positive attitudes in biology, it would be important use experimental work and inquiry-based learning in biology education.

Abstract:
Abstract African Multilingual nations are in dire need of empirical investigations, which will expose the real language situations, attitudes, and how all of these can be harnessed for development. This study attempts to show that a rich variety of research methods can serve this purpose. An illustration is carried out by adapting the matched guise to study language attitudes in Nigeria. The findings show that apart from working in a simple and direct way in Nigeria, the matched guise reveals subconsciously held language attitudes which the questionnaire or interview methods may not have shown. Descriptive statistics, and paired t-test results show significant p-values in favour of RP (as against the PNEP). It is recommended that new language attitude studies in Nigeria, and Africa as a whole, should enrich their findings through the increased use of the matched guise and other fresh methods. The attitude shown towards RP implies that it will continue to serve as a model for English pronunciation in Nigeria. PNEP will remain relevant in non formal domains of communication.

Abstract:
The attitudes towards children are more complex than simple positive/negative distinctions. In the present study, we sought in two studies (N = 445) to provide a tool to explore different facets of attitudes towards babies and procreation by developing and validating a questionnaire regarding attitudes towards procreation. Study 1 was conducted to develop an English language scale tapping into adults’ attitudes toward having offspring. A larger number of statements were formulated that expressed an emotional value and motivational attitudes towards having babies. The sample consisted of n = 157 participants. Participants’ responses were subjected to a preliminary principal components analysis with an oblique rotation. Study 1 obtained a relatively economical scale to tap into three facets of attitudes toward having children. Study 2 sought to validate a German language version of the same scale as in the previous study. A total of n = 288 participants were recruited. The 13 items of the scale were subjected to a confirmatory factor analysis. Study 2 confirmed the three-dimensional structure. The Procreation Attitude Scales (PrAttS) consists of 13 items representing three underlying dimensions: (1) unconditional positivity, (2) anticipated annoyance and (3) contingent willingness. The present investigations showed twice a gender difference in emotional attitudes, revealing that women have a stronger emotional interest in procreation and babies. The PrAttS provides an explicit method of interest for children, providing an alternative to more recently criticized implicit measures.

This essay speaks to a certain kind of difficulty that stands in the way of doing phenomenology. I argue that this difficulty has its source in the sort of institutional structures many of us think and write under, which gives rise to a kind of attitude that tends to obscure or diminish the worth and promise of attending to the things themselves, phenomenologically. I refer to this attitude as the “exegetical attitude.” In attempting to make this attitude more manifest, I hope to further phenomenological investigations of the lived world.

Abstract:
Safety climate assessment has been recognized as a powerful tool to bring to light workers’ perceptions related to safety practices, attitudes and behaviors at the workplace. Accordingly, its investigation can provide useful information about safety problems within a company before accidents occur. In literature, numerous studies can be found investigating safety climates in different types of industry. However, safety climate assessment in agricultural activities is addressed scarcely, even though agriculture represents a very hazardous sector. To reduce this gap, the present study proposes an investigation of safety climate among farmers by means of the Nordic Safety Climate Questionnaire (NOSACQ-50). The results of the survey brought to light a low level of safety perception of the interviewed sample, especially as concerns safety commitment and risk-taking attitudes. In particular, a different attitude toward safety issues has been registered depending on both the position and gender of the interviewed farmers. Overall, the output of this cross-sectional analysis adds to the current literature by expanding knowledge of safety climate among farmers, representing a baseline for further investigations based on human-centered approaches to enhance safety in agriculture and consequently social and workplace aspects of sustainable agricultural systems.

Abstract:
Elections constitute a principal avenue of citizen involvement in political life, and knowledge of their effects on public attitudes towards the polity and the role of the individual therein has important implications for theories of democratic governance. One sucli attitude is political efficacy, ‘the feeling that individual political action does have, or can have, an impact on the political process’. Although many studies have documented that political efficacy is positively associated with electoral participation, the causal mechanisms involved are not well understood. Most researchers have simply assumed that the ‘causal arrow’ runs from efficacy to participation, i.e. from the attitude to the behaviour. Investigations of the hypothesis that the behaviour (participation) affects the attitude (efficacy) are rare. Rarer still are enquiries focusing on the impact of election outcomes on efficacy, and studies that examine both effects are virtually non-existent. In this Note covariance structure analysis is used to investigate the effects of voting, campaign activity and the outcomes of the 1984 national elections on political efficacy in the American electorate.

This article describes the development and evaluation of a tool to assess knowledge and attitudes of teachers towards inclusion of students with special educational needs (SEN). A questionnaire on attitudes of teachers towards these students was designed paying attention to three different levels: knowledge and attitude towards disability, organization of the educational response created to help students with SEN, and professional skills to adequately respond to the SEN students. The suitability of the instrument was assessed takng into account its content validity, reliability and underlying structure. Six different key dimensions, related to the investigations that have been carried out so far, were analyzed. These dimensions justified, from their theoretical point of view, their value.

The present article constitutes the second part of a brief critical analysis of the research on attitude and attitude-(speech) behaviour relations. Its major aim is to show that the contribution from the socio-psychological paradigm can prove relevant and valuable when applied to sociolinguistic research on attitude and attitude-behaviour relations. The author argues that attitudinal investigations in sociolinguistics, despite their popularity and rich history, frequently suffer from a number of methodological and theoretical flaws. The author advances an argument that a reconceptualization of the construct of attitude and some additional methodological principles can help refine the whole paradigm of language attitude research. Specifically, it is pointed out that a cognitive/information-processing approach to attitude formation, the theory of planned behaviour and other theoretical and methodological insights discussed in this paper can prove immensely rewarding and can give a new impetus for further research.

Roos, Karen. "An investigation into the attitudes of male undergraduate students towards menstruation: The psychometric properties of the Menstrual Attitude Questionnaire." University of the Western Cape, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/6702.

Full text
Abstract:
Magister Artium (Psychology) - MA(Psych)
Menstruation is an integral and normal part of human life, indeed of human existence. Instead of being celebrated as a noteworthy landmark of biological maturity in a young girl‟s life, menstruation has become an organic experience burdened with socio-cultural implications (Ussher, 2006). Existing studies suggest that males often view menstruation in a more negative light, which have shown to promote sexism and negative attitudes towards women (Marvan, Vazquez-Toboada, & Chrisler, 2013). The Menstrual Attitude Questionnaire (MAQ) was designed to assess attitudes towards menstruation among men and women and has been applied in a variety of contexts (Brooks-Gun and Ruble, 1980). Despite the extensive use of this scale in various contexts (Jarrah & Kamel, 2012; Neşe Sahin Ozdemir, 2013) there is limited information on its psychometric properties, specifically the factor structure of the instrument. For the MAQ to be meaningful when used in South Africa, it is first necessary to explore the psychometric properties of the instrument when applied to a South African sample. Participants (n = 163) for the study were young male students from the University of the Western Cape who were recruited through purposive sampling. Permission to access students was obtained from the registrar‟s office. Informed consent was obtained from participants for data collection and for use of the data for research purposes. The questionnaires were anonymous in order to protect participant identities. To further ensure confidentiality, all data was kept on a password protected personal computer. Furthermore, this study utilised a cross-sectional research design. Two self-report measures were administered: the MAQ and a demographic questionnaire. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was used to uncover the underlying structure of the MAQ. The study found that both the EFA, as well as the forced factor solution, did not produce a meaningful pattern of loadings. All ethical guidelines stipulated by the University of the Western Cape were strictly adhered to.

Coward, Louise. "Attitudes to nuclear defence : an investigation of processes of change in elite and non-elite belief systems." Thesis, University of Bradford, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/4241.

Full text
Abstract:
The recent developments in negotiations to reduce nuclear weapons in Europe mark a watershed in attitudes towards nuclear deterrence and security. On the one side lie all the old beliefs and assumptions about nuclear defence and security that have been common parlance for the last forty years and more. On the other side lies a unique opportunity to develop a new relationship of increased mutual trust between East and West that could ultimately lead to substantial reductions in the world's nuclear arsenal. The object of this thesis is to establish how much information already exists about attitudes towards nuclear deterrence and the processes of attitude change. From there, to extend these boundaries of knowledge in the belief that if we are able to understand more exactly what people think about nuclear deterrence, why they hold these attitudes and how attitudes change then we will be in a better position to ease the transitional stage between one set of attitudes and another.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigates the internal structure that underlies the ODQ. A structural model that explicates the nature of the causal linkages between the six main constructs comprising the ODQ was developed and tested. Data obtained from 273 employees in a chrome manufacturing plant was used. This research found that the proposed model offers a plausible account of the influences that exist between the six main constructs. The benefit of this structural model will be in the enhanced interpretation of the diagnostic results derived from the ODQ.

Thesis, Linköping University, Department of Science and Technology, 2003. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-2141.

Full text
Abstract:

The purpose of this final thesis is to analyse the internal processes at Å&R Carton in Norrköping and give proposals to reduce time in the Supply Chain. One way to fulfill the purpose is to use Process Based Analys and split the organisation in different processes. Process Based Models have then been constructed by studying litterature, benchmarking, internal documents and making a lot of interviews. The analys shows that different processes must be changed to make the flow through the Supply Chain more efficient. The analys give us also recommendations like attitude investigations and implementation of ECR. The conclusion is that Å&R Carton have great potential to reduce time in the Supply Chain if the management are active, follow the recommendations and show the employees the way about.

Havelka, Stefanie. "Mobile privacy and apps: investigating behavior and attitude." Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.18452/21715.

Full text
Abstract:
State University of New Jersey, USA.
This dissertation examines the role of culture, mobile privacy, apps, and user behavior and attitude. The core research question is: Are there differences in the mobile privacy behaviors and attitudes of American and German library and information science students? This dissertation uses ethnography as its research methodology since culture is at the heart of ethnography. Furthermore, ethnographers try to make sense of behavior, customs, and attitudes of the culture they observe and research. This ethnographer aims to portray a thick narrative and transforms participants' mobile privacy attitude and behavior into a rich account. The research design is comprised of semi-structured interviews, coupled with experiments and participant observations about mobile technology use. Fieldwork 1 was conducted in two different sites: Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Germany, and Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, USA. Fieldwork 2 was conducted via an online video conferencing platform. Contrary to what this researcher predicted, the findings have revealed that there are nearly no cultural differences in mobile privacy behavior and attitude. Similar attitudes, such as mobile privacy complacency, mobile privacy learned-helplessness, and mobile privacy pragmatism, seem to impact German and American students equally. The findings provide support for further research recommendations, and in conclusion, this researcher highlights three contributions this study makes to the scholarly literature.

Abstract:
Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology in the Department of Psychology at the University of Zululand, South Africa, 2012.
The major aim of this study was to investigate the attitude of University of Zululand students towards pornography as well as the effects that pornography might have on their social and academic wellbeing. The study was conducted at the University of Zululand. A total number of 203 participants took part in this study. The questionnaire served to investigate the attitudes of students towards pornography and the effects that porn might have on their social and academic wellbeing. A statistical analysis of the results was conducted and the results indicated that students view pornography for various reasons which include, but are not limited to the following: sexual education, as a stimulant for arousal, as a tool to conform to peer-pressure. Effects of pornography viewing varied from negative to positive. It was also assumed and supported by literature that pornography viewing takes place at an early onset, which places a great responsibility on parents, teachers, care-givers and media to play a more active role in the management of pornography through; practical ways of empowering individuals and parents at early stages of development. Teaching youngsters on critical viewing of content they view on the internet. Promoting programmes with positive sexual content. The need for parental guidance on internet usage; computer to be placed in central places at home, in schools and in other public areas.

Pappagallo, Isabella. "Numerical investigation of magnetic only attitude control for small satellites." Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2019. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/18306/.

Full text
Abstract:
The subject of the thesis research is the study of the attitude control for small satellites actuated by only magnetorquers, which presents interesting control challenges due to the time-variance and underactuation of the system. It is indeed known that for underactuated systems, the presence of external disturbances can lead to system instability. Even if the problem of finding a robust non-linear global controller has been already investigated, there is still room for improvements. In this regard, the present work proposes a solution in which the elements of the averaging theory for a system subjected to exogenous input can be combined with that of the sliding mode control theory based on a classical optimal sliding manifold, providing the feedback system with robustness against disturbances. The proposed approach is applied to design an Earth-pointing attitude control system for the ESEO spacecraft in Low Earth Orbit. The results of simulations suggest that the sliding mode control as robust control feedback provides good performances in the presence of external disturbances, measurement noises, and inertia uncertainties.

Abstract:
The friction resistance under marine conditions is very important to a marine reactor system in the ocean. The traditional empirical or semi-empirical relationships were used in thermo-hydraulic system programmes at the present time, while the applicability of these relationships under ocean conditions was not validated adequately. Experiments have been conducted to study the friction resistance of forced circulation when the test tube was at inclined attitude and rolling model. The experimental setup consists of stainless steel cylinder tube as test section with 10mm inside diameter and 1200mm length, is subjected to a constant wall heat flux boundary condition. The investigation covers Reynolds number range from 1.0e+4 to 1.2e+5, and the test section angles of inclination including 10°, 20° and 30°, amplitudes of rolling angle including 10°, 15° and 20° with the rolling periods of 10s, 15s and 20s. Pressure drop was measured to calculate the coefficient of friction resistance. CFD method was used to simulate the flow characteristics under inclination and rolling conditions, the results were compared with experimental data. The investigations showed that the influence of inclination and rolling to friction coefficient is not obvious.

Abstract:
A substantial amount of research has been carried out in the past to enhance the testing techniques and to increase the accuracy associated with tank testing of sailing yachts. The majority of this work was associated with high budgeted campaigns; large models, long waiting times and high budgets became standard practice in the field. This led to lack of accessibility for low budgeted campaigns and for designers of ordinary sailing yachts to these tests. A research study has been initiated to investigate the scale effects associated with tank testing of sailing yachts. The intention has been to make best use of modern experimental and computational methods to understand the scale effects in conjunction with systematic tank tests. Both viscous and wave components were considered for investigation of scale effects in sailing yacht performance prediction. Four different scale models ranging from 1/4 to 1/10 of a TP52 yacht have been tested in the towing tank in upright and heeled condition while full, half and quarter scale computational analysis have been carried out with a RANS code. The wave pattern measurements were conducted for all upright and heeled cases with the use of three wave probes on each side. Variation of drag, side force, running attitude and wave pattern have been investigated. This paper focuses on the experimental investigations both in the upright and heeled conditions.

Abstract:
The format is one of the essential elements of retail internationalization process. In order to date, cus-tomer attitude about retail companies format entering the market and their possible impact upon consumers and standardization degree has not frequently been the object of investigation within the internationalisation of retail trade. Only by opening the subject of trade consumers and customers can find the solution of components of this element. The current paper explores consumer attitudes to retail format, revealed this element components and provide their evaluation methodology. The prac-tical significance of the current research is that it is a survey of consumer attitude to the company en-tering format the market in another country, which would enable a potential retail entrant to know the expectations of consumers and thus take appropriate decisions. The methodological basis for the pre-sent paper is an analysis of reference material on the internationalisation of retail trade examining cases of successes and failures of retail companies, exploring and understanding consumer expecta-tions and the ways to meet such expectations, as well as peculiarities of entering different markets. The authors interviewed Lithuanian consumers (more than 600) about the IKEA shopping centre be-fore its opening in Vilnius and one year after opening. Studies have confirmed that consumers have their attitudes of the IKEA shopping centre, as the format element.

In ASME 2013 32nd International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/omae2013-10320.

Abstract:
A ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) which has a crawler based driving system is considered to be one of the appropriate underwater vehicles for seafloor exploration or seabed resources development [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. The crawler driven ROV is able to move on sea floor, stay on a fixed sea bottom location and is capable to do heavy works such as digging the seafloor. In order to utilize those capabilities, it is important to know the fundamental moving capability of crawler driven ROV. According to the previous investigations [8][9], the crawler driven ROVs are easy to run in bow-up attitude in some running conditions due to the buoyancy and the hydrodynamic forces acting on the ROV. This irregular running sometimes causes a turning over. Therefore, we have to know the restrictions on the design parameters of the ROV not to run in bow-up attitude to design the ROV. The authors have been investigating the moving capability of crawler driven ROV and showed a method to estimate the restrictions of design parameters to avoid the bow-up running, which is called normal running condition [10][11][12][13]. This method is based on a simple dynamic model which considers the forces acting on ROV as concentrated loads; those are gravity, buoyancy, reaction from the ground, thrust and hydrodynamic drag. The loading position of ground reaction in steady running is obtained from the balance condition of forces. We consider that the loading point of ground reaction should be inside between the fore and rear wheels for the normal running. This constrained condition indicates the relation between gravity and buoyancy center locations for the normal run of ROV under the given body geometry, weight, displacement and running speed. This method estimates the ROV’s running capability in acceptable accuracy compared with the model experiments. However, this method does not consider the tension of the cable which is connected to the ROV. As you can easily imagine, the cable tension has a big influence on the movable area of the ROV. If the ROV keeps going forward, it will turn over due to the tension of the cable at a certain point. We must know the movable area of the crawler driven ROV for the operation planning. The present study shows a method to estimate the movable area of the crawler driven ROV under the restriction of the cable by extending the previous method to estimate the normal running condition.

Abstract:
The scientific and economic significance of underwater technology is considerable, particularly as the oceans are becoming more and more important not only as a source of energy, raw materials and food but also due to their influence on climatic changes. Underwater technology, especially at great depths, represents a very particular challenge which is being tackled by ATLAS ELEKTRONIK Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) DeepC©, SeaOtter Mk1 and SeaOtter Mk2. Many actions that would normally require high cost ROV systems or which are not possible (e.g. under ice investigations) can now accomplished using AUVs, at less cost and manpower. DeepC© is a high efficient AUV system for ultra deep missions (4000m), with long endurance (40–60h) and for a lot of applications. The development objectives are: Low vehicle weight, modular design, high efficient energy generation, autonomous mission execution, obstacle avoidance, in mission re-planning capability, precise navigation, advanced diagnosis and fault recovery system, high manoeuvrability, hover capability and containerized payload. The system is final integrated and ready for water tests and demonstrations till end of 2004. The paper deals with the system performance and shows the development status. The AUV SeaOtter Mk1, based on the ATLAS Maridan M600 vehicle and adapted to modern requirements in navigation software and mission management, is the ideal payload sensor carrier for military and commercial purposes. It ensures precise positioning, stability and manoeuvrability for accurate data collection. The on-board system provides all necessary position, attitude, status and time information to ensure effective and efficient performance throughout the mission. High positional accuracy and accurate stabilization of the vehicle’s attitude throughout the collection of data allows the mapping of raw data to be implemented directly, without post-processing, to obtain the necessary correlation of the survey mosaic. The advanced version of the SeaOtter AUV, the Mk2 is designed for various purposes, strictly adhering to a modular approach with regard to superstructure, propulsion, energy, communication, navigation and payload. The basic vehicle can easily be extended by the means of one or two extension modules to carry heavier payloads. The paper shows the SeaOtter Mk1 performance and gives an overview over the Mk2 Philosophy and the development status.

Abstract:
The investigation of driverless car from the economic perspective is one of the most discussed topics nowadays. Although it can be approached from various perspectives there is still a lack of studies focusing on the behavioral intention to use self-driving cars and its influencing factors. Over the last few decades, various psychological models have been developed to investigate the influencing factors of usage of certain technologies, but most of them cannot provide clear answers on consumer attitudes and intentions with regard to autonomous vehicles. Thus, new models have appeared to better describe the psychological factors of this new technological development that will revolutionize the future of mobility. In our research CTAM (Car Technology Acceptance Model) was used to measure intention to using self-driving cars. In 2019, 314 participants responded to our questionnaire and provided answers to the given questions. We used structural equation modelling to investigate the linkages between the behavioral intention and influencing factors revealed during the literature review. According to the results, the most important influencing factors of intention are attitude, perceived safety and social norms, while anxiety (of using the technology), effort expectancy, performance expectancy, and self-efficacy have not been proven important factors. The model used in our investigation explains behavioral intention to a great extent (63%).

Abstract:
Abstract Recent efforts have been devoted in developing cutting edge methods and technologies to overcome the complications involved in extracting power from the spools in turbofan engines to drive the power systems in aircraft. In a contemporary turbofan engine design, a Dual Drive Booster turbofan (DDBTF) summation gear box is employed to derive power from the low pressure (LP) and high pressure (HP) spools. This paper aims to investigate the scavenging of lubrication oil from the Dual Drive Booster gearbox. It is essential that that the scavenging of oil from the gearbox is efficient to eradicate risks that may arise when oil resides in the gear box for prolonged durations. Longer residence times of oil in the gearbox can lead to rapid oil degradation. Simulations were conducted on a previously optimized geometry and the work in this paper will focus on investigating the effect of different operating conditions on the scavenging performance of the scavenge chamber. The effect of attitude, altitude and the inlet flow rate of oil have been simulated to understand their influence on the oil flow behavior. Emphasis is given on the predicting potential oil churning, recirculation and pooling behaviors in the scavenge chamber that encloses the gear box. Numerical Investigations are carried out using ANSYS Fluent. The Volume of Fluid (VOF) multiphase model is employed to model the multiphase flow arising between air and oil in the system and the effects of turbulence are modelled using the standard k-ϵ model. The computational domain is discretized using a polyhedral grid comprising of 4 million cells which was adopted based on grid independency tests that were conducted prior to the main simulations. Validation against published experimental data for similar flow regimes was also carried out. Results indicate that the scavenging performance is not affected significantly under the various operating conditions and scenarios that were investigated. This is because the effects of the windage outweigh the effects caused by the different operating conditions that are imposed to the scavenge chamber. The windage in the system drives the oil efficiently out from the chamber with the aid of the tangential sump (shown in Figure 4). Oil is distributed in an axially central section of the chamber and the total residence mass of oil is compared and under 0.5 kg for all the cases presented in this paper.
