Abstract:
Background Antibiotics resistance is a major public health threat worldwide. Super bugs, for example, drug resistant tuberculosis or Staphylococcus aureus, are increasingly common in the communities. Hong Kong is one of the areas which have the highest antibiotics resistant strains prevalence rate in the world. Irrational use of antibiotics is an important contributing factor to the emergence of antibiotics resistance. Physician stewardship in the prescription of antibiotics is pivotal in the prevention of antibiotics resistance emergence. Medical students are going to be practicing doctors after graduation from medical school. But few studies had been conducted to investigate their knowledge and attitude towards antibiotics resistance and use, and relations with anticipated antibiotics prescription behaviour. Method 145 medical students at the University of Hong Kong were recruited in this study to complete a self-administered questionnaire. There were in total 14 questions in this questionnaire, covering 2 major themes 1.Self-report of current and past antibiotic use and behaviour; 2.Anticipated prescription behaviour of antibiotics upon graduation and practice in the future. Chi-square test was used to investigate the association between attitude and knowledge of antibiotics with their anticipated prescription behavior upon graduation and practice. Multivariable logistic regression model was used to adjust for potential confounders. Results 67.6 % of the participants hold the correct knowledge of the proper use of antibiotics. Compare with the participants who hold the wrong knowledge, they were to 0.18 times more likely to inappropriately prescribe antibiotics for non-complicated Upper respiratory tract infections (URTI). (OR: 0.18, 95 % CI: (0.08, 0.43); p <0.001). Respectively 33.6 % and 4.9% of all the participants perceived the severity of antibiotics resistance in Hong Kong as “Severe” and “Very severe “. Those who rated “Severe” or above were 0.37 times more likely to inappropriately prescribe antibiotics for non-complicated URTIs compared with the participants who rated “Neutral” or below. (OR: 0.37, 95 % CI: (0.15, 0.91); p = 0.03). Logistic regression model was employed to test the interaction effect. Result showed that clinical training significantly interacted with antibiotics knowledge (p < 0.01)and perceived severity of antibiotics resistance (p = 0.02) in their relations with inappropriate prescription for non-complicated URTIs. Conclusion For the medical students who have received clinical training, those who were more aware of the severity of antibiotics resistance in Hong Kong were less likely to inappropriately prescribe antibiotics for non-complicated URTI. For the medical students who have not received clinical training, correct knowledge of antibiotic use is associated with less inappropriate antibiotics prescription behaviour. These suggest that knowledge and attitude towards antibiotics resistance and use are important factors that may impact on physician stewardship in antibiotics use in the community.

Abstract:
This study aims towards high performing students’ perspective on motivation and how they consistently obtain high grades in English classes. Different characteristics from Skolverket’s study that were common for high performing students along with Reeve’s self-determination theory was used as background research. Qualitative interviews were used to analyse the high performing students’ perception of how they are challenged in English classes and how they motivate themselves. The results show that high performance in English classes is not so much an innate ability, which some are born with, but rather a question of motivation and character.

Abstract:
An essential part on the way to a sustainable society is each individual’s perspective on handling consumption. To develop a sustainable attitude towards one step in the consumption process, such as recycling, is a way to prevent environmental problems. This project aims to design through informal education and social innovation a solution for increasing the rate of waste separation among students in Sweden. In order to do so, it focuses on students at Linnaeus University in Växjö as an example and it responds to the local needs. It supposes collaborations with student associations, Linnaeus University, recycling companies and Växjö municipality. The solution proposes an innovative framework formulated to develop the habit of separating waste. Through informal education, it intends to deliver the knowledge and create the social space for practice and connection necessary in developing the proposed habit. The theoretical perspectives include design for learning in the context of waste separation, while gamification and learning by doing are tools for development. Several methods are used throughout the innovation process. Among these, conducting a workshop is the main one for defining the design project.  The project can be considered a social innovation because it responds to the students’ needs of connection and self-worth, addressed through knowledge about recycling, awareness and interaction, and to the needs of the Swedish society of a higher rate of waste reparation.

Abstract:
Background: Researchers have investigated display advertising in the past several years from different perspectives but only in connection to traditional Web sites and not specifically for social networking sites. Facebook is the most prominent social networking site in terms of number of users and its main source of revenue is its online advertising business. Having display advertising in their virtual space is the reason why social networks are able to offer free service and as such the need to understand how users perceive it arises The most important way of understanding users’ perceptions about the advertis- ing messages is by studying attitudes. In order to understand the attitudes toward Facebook display advertising, it is necessary to examine the factors that affect the attitude-toward-the-ad. Ad perceptions, ad credibility, attitude toward advertisers, attitude toward advertising and mood have been identified by previous researchers as clearly influencing the attitude toward specific ads. Purpose: The purpose of this research is to investigate user’s attitude toward display advertising on Facebook by identifying the main factors that influence the formation of attitudes. Method: In order to fulfill the purpose and uncover the main factors that influence the attitude towards display advertising on Facebook, a qualitative research has been conducted. Both a primary and a secondary data search was per- formed. The primary data was collected by carrying out semistructured interviews with students at Jönköping University which resulted in a number of 20 respondents. The secondary data was gathered through the use of the resources available at the university library, both digital and paper based. Internet Web sites have also been reviewed when needed. Conclusions: The authors found that users display an accepting, positive attitude toward display advertising on Facebook. There have been identified five main fac- tors influencing Facebook users’ attitude and these are ad credibility, ad perceptions, attitude toward the advertiser, informativeness and lack of irritation. Moreover, the informativeness factor was found to have the greatest influence in terms of the behavior Facebook users have toward display advertising.

Lawrence, Michelle. "Exploring attitudes of University students towards seeking psychological counselling." Thesis, University of the Western Cape, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/3327.

Full text
Abstract:
Magister Psychologiae - MPsych
Student counselling services, typically located within a holistic developmental approach, aim to render comprehensive student services to service users in relation to their psychological, social, educational and spiritual well-being. However, a number of cognitive and affective barriers reportedly reduce the likelihood of young people at universities seeking professional psychological help for personal-emotional problems. Accordingly, the aim of this study, which is located within the Theory of Reasoned Action, was to explore students’ attitudes towards utilising student counselling services, as well as their interpretations of the influence of age, gender and education on their attitudes and self-rated knowledge regarding seeking psychological help. The study thereby attempts to provide an understanding of the factors that influence help-seeking behaviours in university students. The research sample consisted of twenty nine students from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. The data was collected through focus group discussions, which were conducted using an open-ended and participantcentred approach to the discussion. The qualitative approach of the study was informed by the theory of social phenomenology. Data gathered from the focus group discussions was thematically analysed. The results suggest that attitudes have a potentially important influence on intentions to seek out psychological counselling. Findings show that students feel shame and guilt when they are struggling psychologically and as a result avoid seeking psychological intervention for fear of being negatively stigmatised. The study revealed that education around mental health disorders and the management thereof was crucial in order for them to be demystified and de-stigmatised, and to facilitate openness in the sharing of these problems, and society’s understanding and acceptance of people experiencing psychological disorders. Results also indicate that there is a shift taking place in these attitudes, and suggest ways in which this change can be further facilitated, such as the utilisation of peer helpers who could play a key role in facilitating and reinforcing help seeking behaviour. The outcomes of the study may further contribute to informing universities’ goal to provide accessible, quality and effective development and support services to its students.

Roos, Karen. "An investigation into the attitudes of male undergraduate students towards menstruation: The psychometric properties of the Menstrual Attitude Questionnaire." University of the Western Cape, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/6702.

Full text
Abstract:
Magister Artium (Psychology) - MA(Psych)
Menstruation is an integral and normal part of human life, indeed of human existence. Instead of being celebrated as a noteworthy landmark of biological maturity in a young girl‟s life, menstruation has become an organic experience burdened with socio-cultural implications (Ussher, 2006). Existing studies suggest that males often view menstruation in a more negative light, which have shown to promote sexism and negative attitudes towards women (Marvan, Vazquez-Toboada, & Chrisler, 2013). The Menstrual Attitude Questionnaire (MAQ) was designed to assess attitudes towards menstruation among men and women and has been applied in a variety of contexts (Brooks-Gun and Ruble, 1980). Despite the extensive use of this scale in various contexts (Jarrah & Kamel, 2012; Neşe Sahin Ozdemir, 2013) there is limited information on its psychometric properties, specifically the factor structure of the instrument. For the MAQ to be meaningful when used in South Africa, it is first necessary to explore the psychometric properties of the instrument when applied to a South African sample. Participants (n = 163) for the study were young male students from the University of the Western Cape who were recruited through purposive sampling. Permission to access students was obtained from the registrar‟s office. Informed consent was obtained from participants for data collection and for use of the data for research purposes. The questionnaires were anonymous in order to protect participant identities. To further ensure confidentiality, all data was kept on a password protected personal computer. Furthermore, this study utilised a cross-sectional research design. Two self-report measures were administered: the MAQ and a demographic questionnaire. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was used to uncover the underlying structure of the MAQ. The study found that both the EFA, as well as the forced factor solution, did not produce a meaningful pattern of loadings. All ethical guidelines stipulated by the University of the Western Cape were strictly adhered to.

Abstract:
Swedish households are getting deeper in debt and house prices keeps on rising. This is what happened in USA and it was one of the major causes of the recent financial crisis. To avoid a similar crisis in Sweden we think one part of the solution is to make sure that those who are students today and soon will get jobs, buy houses, take loans etcetera have necessary knowledge to do so. Students’ saving is an area that almost completely lacked researchers’ attention, and one goal with this thesis is to point out why it’s an important subject and to increase interest among other researchers. We want to give other researcher a foundation to start from, to give an idea of what students saving looks like, so they can continue to explore this important subject. Our research is using theories developed on private saving in American households as a background, and two psychological theories, The theory of planned behavior by Ajzen (1991) and Self-determination theory by Deci and Ryan (2000) as a foundation. This thesis primary focus is on researching students attitude towards saving, students attitude towards stocks and students motivation towards saving. This is researched by distributing a Likert Scale based questionnaire to two groups, business students and technical energy students, a total of 133 students. The answers were collected in two classrooms and all students agreed to fill in the questionnaire leaving us with no non-response bias. The result was very positive and quite surprising. A majority of the students in our study have a positive attitude towards saving, a slightly positive attitude towards stocks and they are motivated to save. Our conclusion is that although the result is positive students saving and students knowledge about saving can be further improved by more education.

Full text
Abstract:
This study aimed at finding out junior secondary student’s attitude towards school science in a co-educational school in Hong Kong. Eleven items from the survey instrument Attitude towards School Science (AtSS) were used to collect both descriptive and explanatory data on student’s attitude towards school science. The sample consisted of 393 Form 1 to Form 3 students. Their positive AtSS were found to decline with grade level (i.e. declining from Form 1 to Form 3). The decrease in positive attitude was sharpest between Form 2 and Form 3. A remarkable decrease in positive attitude towards their science teachers was also noticed between Form 2 and Form 3 mainly due to the decrease in variety of activities during the lessons. In general, female students were less positive to school science but they were trying harder than the male students because they wanted to do well even though they were not as interested as male students in the subject. In terms of interest, female students were more favorably inclined towards biological science and male students towards physical sciences. Based on the findings, it is suggested that the curriculum and time allocation for junior secondary science, especially for Form 3, should be revised so as to help cultivate student’s interest in science. Also, peer observations can be arranged more frequently to let teachers learn from each other.

Abstract:
Low achievement in Mathematics is a problem that faces schools, colleges and universities, not only in South Africa, but worldwide. Many efforts have been made to explore different ways in which teaching and learning can be more effective. ICT provides endless possibili–ties to enhance the teaching and learning of Mathematics. The purpose of this study is to determine teacher–students’ attitude towards ICTs in order to plan for effective, efficient and appropriate methods of Mathematics education. It further aims to determine to what extent these students will be willing to use ICTs in their own studies as well as in the teaching pro–cess in their classrooms, and aims to compare the students’ attitudes across three countries i.e. South Africa, Tanzania and Finland. The population consisted of Mathematics education teacher–students enrolled at the following institutions: School for Continuing Teacher Educa–tion (SCTE) at the North–West University in South Africa (317 students), the Iringa University College, University of Tumaini in Tanzania (111 students), and the University of Joensuu in Finland (56 students). This study followed a quantitative cross–sectional survey design com–prising a single mode research questionnaire to three groups of students in three countries. The instrument that was used was based on the Loyd and Gressard Computer Attitude Sur–vey (1984) (CAS), with a few additional questions to add to the relevance of this study. Questionnaires were completed by each group of students. The questionnaires were posted to each Mathematics teacher–student at the SCTE with a return envelope included. The re–searcher visited Tanzania and administered the questionnaire to the students at their univer–sity and some students in Finland completed the survey online while others completed a pa–per–based copy, which was returned to the researcher. Descriptive statistical techniques, reliability and validity of the instrument scale, inferential statistics (ANOVA), and cross–tabulations were used, and where appropriate, effect sizes were calculated. Findings indi–cated that the teacher–students have a positive attitude to computers and that they are willing to use ICTs in their own studies and in their teaching at school. The comparison of their atti–tudes revealed that the South African and Tanzanian teacher–students have a more positive attitude towards ICTs than the Finnish students. The teacher–students in the two African countries were also more willing to use ICTs than the students in Finland, despite their in–creased exposure and access to technology. To create an environment of effective Mathe–matics education, a number of factors play an important role. Mathematics education sup–ported by good pedagogical content knowledge can be transformed into effective Mathemat–ics education with the aid of a positive computer attitude and willingness to use technology. Together these aspects are supported by the technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPCK) framework.

Abstract:
The topic of this study was Female Genital Mutilation, a crime against human rights and a severe problem in parts of Africa. Laws against FGM have had limited effect and nurses are faced with many opportunities to inspire behavioral changes in individuals, making the aim of this study to explore Ghana’s nursing students’ knowledge of and attitudes towards female genital mutilation. Data was collected at the Atibie Midwifery and Nursing Training School located in central Ghana. It was a descriptive non-experimental empirical study carried out by collecting quantitative data with questionnaires. Data was registered and analyzed manually. The outcome of this study indicated that nursing students at Atibie Midwifery and Nursing Training School in Ghana have a fairly high knowledge of FGM and FGM-related complications. Further, the students seem to have very mixed attitudes towards FGM, the majority being a negative attitude towards the practice. Although, a small part of the study population does have a more traditional point of view.

Abstract:
This study presents findings obtained from 280 fourth year high school students in Ormoc City, Philippines concerning their attitude towards English and towards Fil-English code-switching. It is a partially comparative study that surveys similarities and differences of attitude towards code-switching between 140 public high school students and 140 private high school students. The survey incorporates both quantitative and qualitative methods. The result shows that participants are generally positive towards English and Fil-English code-switching. However, there are more private school students who have a neutral attitude towards code-switching, compared to public high school students. In addition, the result shows that code-switching amongst the 280 high school students is a marked socio-linguistic activity. Furthermore, the result shows that Fil-English is both subtractive and additive bilingualism from the students’ viewpoint. Finally, findings show that the participants’ attitudes towards English and Fil-English illustrate diglossia in their speech community.

The development of internet has provided an opportunity for offering online learning. Online learning otherwise known as ‘e-learning’ is a fast growing new concept of modern education. Substantial evidence indicates that many universities across the world have started offering study programmes through a variety of e-learning methods. Although e- learning environments are becoming popular, there is minimal research on learners’ attitudes toward online learning environments. Past research has recommended a variety of factors affecting user attitude so far as e-Learning is concern. It is thus against this background that this study purports to determine the attitudes of undergraduate nursing students toward e–learning at the University of the Western Cape. The study developed an integrated model with six dimensions: learners, instructors, courses, technology, design, and environment. A survey was conducted on 213 undergraduate nursing students to assess their attitudes toward e-learning. The study employed the survey methodology based on the questionnaire that was distributed randomly to students to assess their attitudes towards e-learning and to find out if any existing demographical factors impact on the students’ use of e- learning. The results revealed that males and females differed significantly in terms of satisfaction levels. When specific demographic variables with two outcome levels (age group, computer facility at home, computer training experience and experience in e-learning prior to registering at UWC) are considered, there is no statistically significant difference (from the sample t-test) in learner satisfaction between these groups. From a valid response rate (90% of the sample), statistical analysis (multivariate analysis) revealed that learner satisfaction as the control variable is influenced by perceived easy to use, gender and year level of participants. The findings also showed a significant difference between male and female satisfaction. In this regard, 4th year nursing students were proven to be less likely to be satisfied with e-learning than 2ndyear nursing students, whereas female nursing students are more likely to be satisfied with e-learning than male nursing students. Generally, the study’s findings demonstrate a favourable attitude towards e-learning among nursing students at University of the Western Cape.

Abstract:
Background: Advertising channels in today's marketplace are becoming more limited with the development of ad-free sources of entertainment. The phenomenon of product placements is therefore becoming one of the most important sources for advertising in media. Especially film productions have turned into a canvas for companies to display their brands upon. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the case of product placements in Hollywood blockbuster movies. In particular, brand recognition and audience's ac-ceptance of a brand’s presence in movies were examined. Method: A mixed method approach was applied in order to fulfill the purpose of this thesis and answer research questions. A questionnaire in the form of a handout and focus group discussions were used to collect quantitative and qualitative data from audiences consisting of international students. The questionnaires were handed out after the movies had been shown in a setting resembling that of a movie theater, meaning that respondents were not aware of the study beforehand and were therefore not biased. The focus group discussions gave us information needed in answering the second research question and getting more insights of the practice. Conclusions: Our research showed that product placements in movies lead to brand recognition, and audience’s acceptance of a brand’s presence is influenced by congru-ency of product placement in movies. This outcome resulted from the combination of four determining factors: movie genre, execution factors, appropriateness in the movie setting and brand characteristics.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research study was to determine whether the use of science reform instructional methods had an effect on student participation in and attitudes towards science education. The participants in this 12 week study were third grade students. Data were collected using a pre and post attitudinal survey, student journals, a participation log, and a researcher reflection journal. Several conclusions were made. The use of science reform instructional methods did affect student participation and attitudes towards science. Student journals indicated that students enjoyed the use of technology, hands-on science equipment, working in pairs or small groups and the opportunity to share their ideas and learn from their classmates. This study does lend itself to additional research. Due to the small sample size, the shortened time for research, and the population, these research questions should be investigated with another group of students in order to make more definitive decisions regarding the methods to use in their classroom. If the research is conducted again using a different group of students, a larger population will be needed, as well as a lengthened period for research.

DISSERTATION SUBMITTED IN FINAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE MASTERS OF TECHNOLOGIAE IN NURSING IN THE FACULTY OF HEALTH AND WELLNESS SCIENCES AT THE CAPE PENINSULA UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY 2015
Beliefs and awareness towards prostate cancer screening among men is very crucial for early detection and management of the condition. From various literatures reviewed, prostate cancer is the second leading cause of death amongst men. In Nigeria, it is the most common male cancer and may be as high as that seen in African Americans in the United State. In most developing countries e.g Benin Republic, Gambia, Senegal, Ghana, and Nigeria, access to health care and prostate cancer screening methods for early detection is limited. AIM: The aim of the study is to assess the knowledge, belief and attitude of male students in the Benson Idahosa University, Benin City, Nigeria towards prostate cancer screening in order to curb the high incidence and death rate resulting from this disease. POPULATION: The study populations will be Faculty of Social and management Science students of range 18-35 years at Benson Idahosa University, Benin-City, Nigeria. SAMPLE: All students will be selected from the number of male students that are registered in the Faculty of Social Science. METHODOLOGY: This design selected for this study is qualitative cross-sectional. METHOD OF DATA COLLECTION: Interviews and questionnaires will be used as tool for data collection. KEY FINDINGS: The students had never received information from their health care provider about prostate cancer. Very few were able to identify the possible symptoms of prostate cancer. There is low level of knowledge about prostate cancer screening and they do not know what abnormal prostate specific antigen (PSA) is. Majority of the participants gained informed knowledge about prostate cancer screening for the first time from this study. The students have a pronounced negative attitude towards prostate cancer screening. Lack of awareness about cancer screening programs is also identified as a major barrier why many Nigerian men do not go for screening. The level of education has a positive influence to prostate cancer and screening. Prostate cancer screening is not a taboo to Bini culture. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study revealed that there is low level of knowledge about prostate cancer among male university students in Benin-City, Nigeria. RECOMMENDATIONS: Initiation of cancer teachings in schools, churches, and traditional gatherings. Demonstrations with the use posters in public places about prostate cancer menace and screening should be 3 encouraged. There should be implementation of policy that every male student from age 30 be involved in health education and promotion programs for prostate cancer. Abstract:
Entrepreneurship has played an important role in economic prosperity and social stability in many developed countries. Today South Africa as developing country is faced with massive challenges of high levels of unemployment among the youth, especially university graduates, due to lack of work experience, low skills base and education. The formal labour market in South Africa is currently saturated, unable to absorb the ever increasing number of labour force; hence, the decision by the government to prioritise the development and support of small medium enterprises. Beside all these interventions, South Africa is still ranked among the lowest of all developing countries participating in the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM). Today entrepreneurship is offered in most of the universities as part of the curriculum but it is evident that levels of entrepreneurship are still not improving in the country. There has been an upward trend in the number of young South Africans entering higher education; this can be attributed to the poor market conditions for low–skilled workers and the high monetary benefits to education. The daunting observation is that while the graduate labour force is on the rise, a large number of graduates possessing diplomas and degrees are finding it difficult to find employment. Graduate unemployment in South Africa has been rising very fast since 1995 along with national unemployment. In this study the entrepreneur was used casually to refer to the owner or creator of a new business, small, growing, and successful business. This includes any person who sets up a small business, or changes from being an employee of an organisation to being self employed, even though neither needs any significant degree of innovation nor capital. Risk taking and risk tolerance is one component of entrepreneurship that is very critical, hence there is a need for more attention in the entrepreneurial education. In the discovery perspective, cognition has impact on the chance that some people will identify and seize the opportunity. Opportunity identification depends on prior awareness and knowledge, whilst exploitation depends on having the necessary ii capabilities. Entrepreneurs should be able to read and recognise patterns for them to recognise opportunities. Profile of an entrepreneur and skills required are technical skills, perseverance, communication skills, managerial skills, leadership skills, innovative skills, pro–activity, information seeking skills, and financial skills. The primary objective of this study was to assess the attitudes and perceptions towards entrepreneurship among students in a higher education institution in the Sedibeng District of the Gauteng Province. The empirical study was conducted among the population and recommendations on entrepreneurial education were compiled. The survey was conducted using a self–completion questionnaire method, whereby questionnaires are handed out to respondents for self–completion and returned to the researcher immediately. In an effort to encourage high response, the questionnaire was accompanied by a cover letter which assured the respondents of confidentiality. An attitude scale to test the prevalence of entrepreneurial attitudes and perceptions among the respondents was used. The Likert scale was used whereby the respondents were asked to rate a particular issue on a scale that ranged from strongly disagrees to strongly agree. The majority of the respondents are predominantly young Africans, from low income families with only few parents that made it to university level, and mostly not involved in entrepreneurship. The gap exists with regard to equipping the respondents with entrepreneurial education and training. The university and other stakeholders should create an environment that is supportive towards entrepreneurial activities. There are still many business opportunities that need to be explored in South Africa but the biggest challenge remains the access to knowledge and information with regard to available support structures. Tertiary institutions should: Develop start–up capital systems for students whilst studying. The curriculum design should support employability skills such as languages, starting your own businesses, presentation skills, creativity and leadership abilities, specific qualifications focusing on business creation should be developed, case studies should focus more on opportunity orientated ideas and business and lecturing staff should be empowered to support entrepreneurial activities in their respective fields. Databases of possible business ideas should be developed. A conceptual research model that will support accelerated youth entrepreneurship should be developed in the country and research institutions should be contracted to populate this research model. Furthermore, government regulations should be tested regarding their impact on youth entrepreneurship development as a standard item. Fresh approaches are thus needed to stimulate youth entrepreneurship in rural areas. Therefore, policies and programmes to encourage youth entrepreneurship in these areas should be researched. National competitions for youth entrepreneurs should be encouraged and visible events should be organised such as enterprise weeks at tertiary educational institutions. Tertiary institutions can also investigate the possibility of business hives for students or allowing students businesses to operate on campuses for the duration of their studies.

ABSTRACT COMPARISON OF 2002 AND 2004 ELEMENTARY SCIENCE CURRICULA WITH RESPECT TO COGNITIVE AND AFFECTIVE CHARACTERISTICS OF STUDENTS Oruç
, Akif M.S., Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Giray Berberoglu June 2009, 116 pages The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of 2004 elementary science and technology curricula at grade level 7. For this purpose, the effect of 2004 curricula on the (1) achievement of the students in knowledge, conceptual understanding and higher order thinking skills clusters, (2) attitude toward science and technology, (3) teachers&rsquo
classroom activities were evaluated. This study was conducted on 290 7th grade students at six elementary schools in 2006-2007 spring term. These schools were located in Sincan, Yenimahalle and Mamak in Ankara. Two schools were administering 2004 curricula as pilot group and four of them were teaching science with 2002 curricula. Grade level 7 was selected for the study since both 2002 and 2004 curricula were being implemented in the schools only at this particular grade level. The achievement test questions were selected from TIMMS science achievement tests and the researcher&rsquo
s own questions written in line with the test plan. The questions include the common objectives of both 2002 and 2004 curricula. The Test of Science Related Attitudes was developed by Chaerul (2002). As a result of the factor analysis it was decided that, the scale contains five sub categories: Social implication of science, Scientist lifestyle, Enjoyment of learning in science lesson, Leisure interest in science, and Career interest in science. Teachers&rsquo
Classroom Activities Scale was taken from Pekiner (2007). It was decided that, the scale contains five sub categories
New Approach, Care of Teacher, Use of Equipment by teachers, Classical Classroom Activities and Processing the Subject category. The data were analyzed by using multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). The results of this analyses indicated no major difference between two science curricula. On the other hand, significant differences were found in leisure interest of students and use of equipment by teachers in favor of 2004 curricula. Knowledge and conceptual understanding level learning, the enjoyment of learning in science lesson and teachers&rsquo
classroom activities with reference to new approaches indicated significant results in favor of 2002 curricula.

Abstract:
The purposes of this study were (a) to develop, implement, and evaluate a computer-oriented instructional program for introductory calculus students, and (b) to explore the association between a computer-oriented calculus instructional program, a non-computer-oriented calculus instructional program, student achievement on three selected calculus topics, and student attitude toward mathematics. An experimental study was conducted with two groups of introductory calculus students during the Spring Semester, 1989. The computer-oriented group consisted of 32 students who were taught using microcomputer calculus software for in-class presentations and homework assignments. The noncomputer-oriented group consisted of 40 students who were taught in a traditional setting with no microcomputer intervention. Each of three experimenter-developed achievement examinations was administered in a pretest/posttest format with the pretest scores being used both as a covariate and in determining the two levels of student prior knowledge of the topic. For attitude toward mathematics, the Aiken-Dreger Revised Math Attitude Scale was administered in a pretest/ posttest format with the pretest scores being used as a covariate. Students were also administered the MAA Calculus Readiness Test to determine two levels of calculus prerequisite skill mastery. An ANCOVA for achievement and attitude toward mathematics was performed by treatment, level, and interaction of treatment and level. Using a .05 level of significance, there was no significant difference in treatments, levels of prior knowledge of topic, nor interaction when achievement was measured by each of the three achievement examination posttests. Furthermore, there was no significant difference between treatments, levels of student prerequisite skill mastery, and interaction when attitude toward mathematics was measured, at the .05 level of significance. It was concluded that the use of the microcomputer in introductory calculus instruction does not significantly effect either student achievement in calculus or student attitude toward mathematics.

Abstract:
This study investigated the relationship between students’ perceptions of learning environments and their attitude to science in Australian secondary schools. It focussed on teacher support and equity in the lower secondary school years of 8, 9, and 10. Teacher Support and Equity are two of the five scales of the What Is Happening In this Class (WIHIC) questionnaire. The scale to measure Attitude to Science was drawn from the Test of Science Related Attitudes (TOSRA). Using the statistical package SPSS, gender differences and year level differences were examined for each of the scales. Results showed that the females rated the scales of Teacher Support and Equity more highly than did the males but the males had a more positive attitude to science than did the females. The Year 9 students were considerably less positive than those from years 8 and 10 on all three scales. Of the three scales, Equity received the highest rating across all the groups, while Attitude scored the lowest. Regression analysis showed statistically significant and positive associations between Attitude to Science and the Teacher Support and Equity scales. These results were consistent when tested separately for the male and female students, and for each of the year levels. To gain insights into science teaching and learning from a teacher’s perspective, one primary teacher, two high school teachers, and one pre-service teacher were interviewed. Their comments were found to support the quantitative results in that they agreed that teacher actions or inactions within the learning environment would affect the students’ attitude to science.
They expressed the view that students needed to feel able to ask questions without criticism and receive the help they needed to progress, which corresponded to the Teacher Support scale. They also felt that it was not appropriate for teachers to favour any group of students over any other, thus supporting the concept of the Equity scale. The findings will assist teachers to develop strategies to address the problem of students’ declining attitude to science, a problem that is viewed as a potential threat to the economic future of Australia.

Abstract:
Although geometry is important area in the mathematics curriculum, evidence from numerous research studies makes it clear that many students&rsquo
geometrical understanding is not at the level they need or are expected to be, especially in Turkey. The project-based learning approach offered to be one of the most effective learning tools to provide for the students an environment in which they can reach their own conclusions instead of just lecturing them, in the new mathematics curriculum in Turkey. In this study, the effects of project-based learning on the 7th grade students&rsquo
achievement in geometry and these students&rsquo
attitude towards geometry were examined. This study was conducted with a group of 24 seventh grade students in the Bilim College during the last five weeks of the 2004-2005 academic year. One group pre-test and post-test design was used. The instruments used for data collection are as follows: polygon, circle and cylinder achievement tests, geometry attitude scales, student survey forms, teacher&rsquo
s observation scales, and interviews. The data obtained was analyzed by a paired-sample t-test. The results from achievement tests and attitude scale indicated that project-based learning increased students&rsquo
geometry achievement and attitudes toward geometry, respectively. The student survey form and interview responses of the students, teacher&rsquo
s observation form responses of the teachers and the observation of the researcher also suggest that project-based learning increased their achievement in and their attitudes towards geometry as a result of making their own models, dealing with authentic daily life problems, determining the dimensions and the areas by trial and error. Moreover, this study helped grasp the attention and increase the desire to study particularly of those students with high capacity who performed unsatisfactorily due to their inclination to get distracted during classes. Providing those who were easily distracted and used every chance to disrupt the lectures with the opportunity to engage in something they could see as their own project brought about favorable results.

Full text
Abstract:
Nationally, as well as at state and local level, 75% of students in Grades 4, 8 and 12 have been determined to be writing at the basic or below basic level. In 2012, the standards were made more stringent for the incorporation of details and adherence to customary English conventions. After that, students’ writing scores plummeted. Hispanic students scored more poorly than their White counterparts. Earlier studies indicated that students’ attitude towards writing becomes less positive as they progress through the grades. The purpose of the study was to examine the effect of extra writing on 60 fourth-grade, Hispanic students’ writing, and their attitude towards writing through participation in a Writers’ Club versus an At Home Writing Group or a group with no extra writing. The study followed a quasi-experimental, pretest-posttest, non-equivalent group design. The groups were the Writers’ Club (n = 22), the At Home Writing Group (n = 18 and no extra writing (n = 20). All students received regular writing instruction and homework. The Writers’ Club met 24 times for 30 minutes each meeting, over an 8-week period. Pretest and posttest writing samples were evaluated using Spandel’s Teacher Six-Point Writing Guide and attitude towards writing was evaluated using Kear, Coffman, McKenna, and Ambrosio’s Writing Attitude Survey. A univariate analysis of covariate was conducted on the pretest and posttest writing samples and responses to the Writing Attitude Survey protocol. The independent variable was group membership, the dependent variable was the posttest scores and the covariate was the pretest scores. The writing samples were examined for three conditions: incorporation of details (ideas), adherence to the conventions of customary English and overall writing skill. The results of the current study showed no significant difference in fourth-grade, Hispanic students’ writing or their attitude towards writing based on group membership. The conclusions of the study are that the results were potentially compromised by a variety of limitations and that it may have been conducted over too short a period for positive effects to be seen. The conclusion is that further research is warranted with adjustments to the setting and the timeframe.

Abstract:
Alcohol consumption among Chinese college students has become a serious problem. The present research examines the relationships among attitudes towards alcohol advertising, attitudes towards alcohol products, the perceived influences of alcohol advertising on the self, the perceived influences of alcohol advertising on others, and attitudes toward government restrictions on alcohol advertising. Data were collected from 578 Chinese college students via an online survey. The results supported the hypothesized relationships between attitude toward alcohol products and alcohol advertising, as well as the relationship between attitude toward alcohol advertising and perceived influence of alcohol advertising on oneself. Results also supported the looking glass perception hypothesis whereby the perceived influence of alcohol advertising on oneself (first-person effect) had strong influence on the perceived influence on others (third-person effect) which in turn led to greater support for restrictions on alcohol advertising.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2000.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In 1994 the Durban College of Education, that used to be an all white Afrikaans-medium institution, changed to a multicultural institution with Afrikaans and English as medium of instruction. The author, other lecturers and teachers of all races have not been educated to teach from a multicultural perspective and due to stereotyping and prejudices which were still dormant, a great need arose to address the cultural diversity of the college. This diversity lead to differences in culture, which lead to conflicts and may even have been responsible for poor academic achievements. As a lecturer at the Durban College of Education, the author became interested in whether selected initiative and cultural activities could foster a positive self-concept and a positive attitude towards other students of the same ethnic group, as well as towards students of other ethnic groups. The author agreed with De Klerk and Labuschagne (1995) that cultural differences have a great impact on the life, personal development and academic achievements of the students at a multicultural institution of higher education. The author also believes that students should be guided (Wasserman, 1997) in how to perceive themselves and other students of all ethnic groups. This will assist them. to achieve a successful academic career (Greyling, 1997) without wrong perceptions, stereotyping and prejudices (Van der Walt, 1991). The subjects for this study (N=127) were all first year students at the Durban College of Education. The group was comprised of black students (n=24); white English speaking students (n=58); white Afrikaans-speaking students (n=34) and Indian students (n=11) (see table 3 page 43). A pre-test was administered to determine the initial status of the subjects. An intervention programme followed and a post-test was administered directly after the intervention programme (see chapter 4). A follow-up test was administered three months later to determine the influence of the daily college routine on the self-concept and attitude towards ethnicity of the subjects. A control group (N=30) also completed the three questionnaires. The control group did not follow the intervention programme. Adolescent Sport Self-concept Scale of Smith (in Paterson 1991) and an ethnic attitude scale, was administered. The ethnic attitude scale was based on the ethnic attitude scales used by Paterson (1991) and Pretorius (1978). This ethnic attitude scale was adapted to adhere to the needs of this study. The data were computerised; at-test statistic and a Duncan's multiple range test were applied to determine if there were significant differences. By comparing the results of the experimental group with that of the control group, it was evident that after the intervention programme, there was a significant positive change (pAFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die Durbanse Onderwyskollege wat voorheen 'n inrigting vir Afrikaanssprekende blankes was, het in 1994 na 'n multikulturele inrigting verander met beide Afrikaans en Engels as voertale.

Abstract:
This study was aimed to provide insight about affective teaching practices that influence students'
affective characteristics in physics lessons using mixed methodology. Affective characteristics consisted of attitudes and motivation. For this purpose Keller'
s ARCS (attention, relevance, confidence, satisfaction) model was revised by adding Communication category. The Affective Teaching Practices Questionnaire, including these categories, was administered to 1,138 students and 31 physics teachers in Ankara. Moreover, the Affective Characteristics Questionnaire was administered to students to find out the relationship between students'
affective characteristics and their perceptions about the teaching practices used by teachers. Four physics teachers, who were performing teaching practices frequently, were purposefully selected according to results of quantitative phase. In qualitative phase, observations were conducted in these teachers'
classrooms to find out teaching practices used to enhance affective characteristics and their effects. Besides, interviews were conducted to support observations. The quantitative data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, while qualitative data were analyzed by cross case analysis. Results revealed that affective teaching practices are related to students'
affective characteristics. Assisting comprehension and providing role models to students are effective for enhancing affective characteristics. Similarly, providing students concrete materials
arousing their inquiry
organizing what is taught from simple to difficult
attributing success to effort
relating topic to students'
experience
stating clearly what is expected of students
providing feedback
using positive outcomes
giving enough time to students
using clear, understandable, fluent language in lessons
caring about teaching
being self-confident
caring about students
and providing an atmosphere suitable for learning are also effective.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate scientific epistemological beliefs, perceptions of constructivist learning environment, attitude towards science, prior knowledge and gender as determinants of students&rsquo
approaches to learning. This study was carried out in 2005-2006 Spring Semester. One thousand, one hundred and fifty two eighth grade students from seven public schools in Ç
ankaya, a district of Ankara participated in this study. Epistemological Beliefs Questionnaire, Constructivist Learning Environment Scale, Learning Approaches Questionnaire and Attitude towards Science Scale were administered to students in order to determine their scientific epistemological beliefs, their perceptions of constructivist learning environments, approaches to learning and attitudes towards science respectively. Descriptive statistics were used in order to explore the general characteristics of the sample. Paired samples t-test was used in order to evaluate the mean difference iv between the scales of the actual and preferred learning environments. Pearson Correlation Analyses and Multiple Regression Analyses were conducted to see the relationships among the variables and the variables that contribute to students&rsquo
meaningful and rote learning approaches. Results of the paired samples t-test showed that the actual learning environments of the students did not adapt their preferences. In fact, students preferred more constructivist learning environments where they have more opportunity to relate science with the real world, communicate in the classroom, take role in the decision making process of what will go on in the lesson to be more beneficial for them, question what is going on in the lesson freely and experience the formulation of scientific knowledge. Pearson correlation analyses, however, showed that students who had meaningful learning orientations had tentative views of scientific epistemological beliefs, positive attitudes towards science, high prior knowledge and perceived their learning environments as constructivist. On the other hand, students who had rote learning approaches had fixed views of scientific epistemological beliefs, positive attitudes towards science and low prior knowledge. In addition, the rote learners perceived their environments as constructivist in all scales except shared control scale. Multiple Regression Analyses by using actual learning environment showed that attitude towards science is the best predictor of both meaningful and rote learning approaches.

Abstract:
The aim of the study is to investigate the relation between attachment style, early maladaptive schemas and attitude towards help seeking. Participants of this study were composed from 572 university students (264 female, 308 male). Participants were selected by convenient sampling method. The data was obtained by using the scale of Attitudes toward Seeking Psychological Help - Shortened (Tü
rkü
m, 2001), Relationship Questionnaire (Bartholomew &
Horowitz, 1991), Young Schema Questionnaire-Short Form (Young &
Brown,2006) and a demographic information form. One-way analysis of variance used to analyze the data. The findings of the study indicated students with secure attachment style was found to have more positive attitude towards psychological help seeking than preoccupied, dismissive and fearful attachment styles. As for early maladaptive schemas, the students who have Social Isolation/Alienation schema, Emotional Inhibition schema, Entitlement / Grandiosity schema and Defectiveness / Shame schema show more positive help seeking attitude than students who don&rsquo
t have. In addition, female students were found to have more positive help seeking attitude than male students.

Previous research often found that geography is not a favorite subject to most students. This study investigates Taiwan’s seventh-grade students’ attitude towards geography based on factors from three aspects: individual, teacher, and curriculum. Individual factors are students’ gender, school location, the importance of geography, and geography academic achievement. Teacher factors are teachers’ gender, background of training, seniority, teaching innovation, and classroom atmosphere. Curriculum factors are hours allocated for geography course, difficulty of materials, and support of geographic facts. Fifty classes are selected by stratified and proportional sampling with 1392 valid samples, which account for 92.99% of all participants. Statistical methods adopted include descriptive statistics of attitude towards geography, differences test and regression analysis. The results of the study are as following. 1. The mean score of attitude towards geography is 3.27, which indicates that students’ attitude towards geography is generally positive. 2. Male students significantly demonstrate a more positive attitude than female students do. The results also demonstrate that students taking 1.5 hours of geography course show a more positive attitude than those with one hour. However, there are not statistically significant differences in school location, teacher’s gender, teacher’s background and seniority. 3. Result of regression analysis indicates that the attitude towards geography is significantly related to all of the six factors, including the importance of geography, teaching innovation, classroom atmosphere, difficulty of materials, support of geographic facts and geography academic achievement. Among these factors, the support of geographic facts explains best. 4. In regression analysis of positive attitude, the result indicates that the attitude towards geography is significantly related to the five factors, including the importance of geography, teaching innovation, classroom atmosphere, difficulty of materials, and support of geographic facts. It contributes about 40.6 % of variance being explained. The seventh-grade students in Taiwan like geography on average. This study finds that curriculum factors are important to attitude. Further improvement on curriculum factors are suggested.
