Abstract:
Objective. To explore differences according to sex in sociosexuality and infidelity in individuals with TBI and in healthy controls.Participants. Forty-two individuals with mild, moderate, and severe TBI having completed a postacute TBI rehabilitation program, at least six months after injury, and 47 healthy controls.Main Measures. Sociosexual Orientation Inventory-Revised (SOI-R) and Attitudes toward Infidelity Scale.Results. Overall, men score significantly higher than women in sociosexuality. However, there was a nonsignificant trend towards a reduction of sociosexuality levels in men with TBI. Infidelity levels were comparable in healthy controls and individuals with TBI. In individuals with TBI, less acceptance of infidelity was significantly associated with an unrestricted sociosexual orientation, but not in healthy controls.Conclusions. As documented in previous cross-cultural studies, men have higher levels of sociosexuality than women. However, men with TBI showed a tendency towards the reduction of sociosexuality. The possibility of a latent explanatory variable is suggested (e.g., post-TBI neuroendocrinological changes). TBI does not seem to have an impact on infidelity, but individuals with TBI who express less acceptance of infidelity also report a more promiscuous mating strategy regarding their behavior, attitudes, and desire. Theoretical implications are discussed in terms of evolutionary theories of human sexuality and neuropsychology.

Abstract:
This article draws on interview material to examine the recent hardening of attitudes towards infidelity. The visibility and apparent frequency of both consensual non-monogamy, as well as more common covert experiences, would suggest a challenge to dominant mononormative assumptions about the feasibility of lifelong monogamy. However, infidelity remains the lone area of adult sexual practice that is disapproved of under any circumstances. I argue that increasing hostility towards affairs is located in the discursive context of the ‘specialness’ of sex and the centrality of trust and communication to constructions of contemporary relationships. With the monogamous sexual couple at the centre of personal life, infidelity is regarded as a particular threat, revealing wider limitations to claims about the extent to which relationships have been detraditionalized.

Abstract:
AbstractIn humans, in contrast to animals, the genetic influences on infidelity are unclear. We report here a large study of over 1600 unselected United Kingdom female twin pairs who confidentially reported previous episodes of infidelity and total lifetime number of sexual partners, as well as attitudes towards infidelity. Our findings demonstrate that infidelity and number of sexual partners are both under moderate genetic influence (41% and 38% heritable, respectively) and the genetic correlation between these two traits is strong (47%). Conversely, attitudes towards infidelity are driven by shared and unique environmental, but not genetic, influences. A genome-wide linkage scan identified three suggestive but nonsignificant linkage areas associated with infidelity and number of sexual partners on chromosomes 3, 7 and 20 with a maximum LOD score of 2.46. We were unsuccessful in associating infidelity or number of sexual partners with a locus implicated in other mammals' sexual behavior, the vasopressin receptor gene. Nonetheless, our findings on the heritabil-ity of sexual infidelity and number of sexual partners provide support for certain evolutionary theories of human sexual behavior, as well as justifying further genetic and molecular research in this domain.

Garcia, Danilo. "How “dirty” is the Dark Triad? Dark character profiles, swearing, and sociosexuality." PeerJ 8 (July 27, 2020): e9620. http://dx.doi.org/10.7717/peerj.9620.

Full text
Abstract:
Malevolent character traits (i.e., the Dark Triad: Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy) are associated to emotional frigidity, antagonism, immoral strategic thinking, betrayal, exploitation, and sexual promiscuity. Despite the fact that character is a complex adaptive system, almost every study has solely investigated the linear association between malevolent character and attitudes towards both swearing and sociosexual orientation (i.e., behavior, attitude, and desire regarding promiscuous sexual behavior). In contrast, the aim in this set of studies was to evaluate these associations in relation to specific profiles of malevolent character (i.e., the Dark Cube). In two studies participants responded to the Dark Triad Dirty Dozen, the Taboo Words’ Offensiveness and Usage Inventories (i.e., attitudes towards 30 swear words’ level of offensiveness and usage) (Study 1: N1 = 1,000) and the Sociosexual Orientation Inventory Revised (Study 2: N2 = 309). Participants were clustered according to all eight possible combinations based on their dark trait scores (M/m = high/low Machiavellianism; N/n = high/low narcissism; P/p = high/low psychopathy). The results of this nonlinear approach suggested that the frequent usage, not level of offensiveness, of swear words was associated to Machiavellianism and narcissism. In other words, individuals with high levels in these traits might swear and are verbally offensive often, because they do not see swearing as offensive (cf. with the attitude-behavior-cognition-hypothesis of taboo words; Rosenberg, Sikström & Garcia, 2017). Moreover, promiscuous sociosexual attitude and desire were related to each dark trait only when the other two were low. Additionally, promiscuous sociosexual behavior was not associated to these malevolent character traits. That is, individuals high in the dark traits are willing to and have the desire to engage in sexual relations without closeness, commitment, and other indicators of emotional bonding. However, they do not report high levels of previous sexual experience, relationships, and infidelity. Hence, they approve and desire for it, but they are not actually doing it. The use of person-centered and non-linear methods, such as the Dark Character Cube, seem helpful in the advancement of a coherent theory of a biopsychosocial model of dark character.

Abstract:
The medieval Franciscan author, Francesc Eiximenis, wrote on the subject of woman in several treatises. In his early works, especially the Segon and Terç del Crestià, he underlined negative attitudes towards women, often recalling classical, patristic, and medieval authors. From the late 1380s to the end of the century, he began to describe women in a positive light and to emphasize Mary’s role in the Church not only as the mother of Jesus, but also as a sacred person free of sin from the time of her conception. This study contrasts Eiximenis’ view o woman from his early works (Segon and Terç del Crestià) to the Dotzè, Llibre de les dones, and Llibre dels àngels. In the early works, more specifically the “Tractat de luxúria,” which is contained in the Terç, Eiximenis discussed mundane topics such as rape, marriage, jealousy, infidelity, separation, divorce, widowhood, literacy among women, menstruation, and prostitution, among the realities of the time. Despite repetitious discussions of these topics previously contained in the “Tractat de luxúria,” the Llibre de les dones conveys a more positive perception of woman, especially its social context, by going beyond the strictly moral theology and moral-didactic content of the “Tractat de luxúria.”

Abstract:
This study examines how demographic and attitudinal variables are associated with Black South African women's desire to marry. Data from the South African Social Attitudes Survey are used to measure the impact of age, education, living standard, religiosity, urbanicity, cohabitation, and attitudes towards woman's careers, the acceptability of cohabitation, gender roles, unwed childbearing, and the financial and emotional security marriage provides on the desire to marry. Analyses indicate the following are associated with the desire to marry among Black South African women: age, cohabitation, attitudes towards cohabitation, and attitudes towards the financial and emotional security marriage provides. Secondly, data from in-depth interviews with 13 young, college-attending, Black South African women are used to give further insight into the impact of these variables on the desire to marry. Analyses of the interview data suggest that young Black South African women desire to marry but feel constrained in choice of eligible partners by the prevalence of infidelity, AIDS, domestic violence, and economic uncertainty. Additionally, educated, young, Black South African women feel less pressure to marry than older generations due to their emerging economic power and society's increasing acceptance of cohabitation, unwed childbirth, and postponement of marriage.

Abstract:
The present study is designed to take a new approach to studying gender differences in reactions to partner infidelity by measuring attitudes toward partner infidelity. No previous studies have directly examined attitudes toward partner sexual versus emotional infidelity, nor have studies assessed the strength of these attitudes. Thus, this study was designed as an initial investigation of overall evaluative differences between men and women. It was found that women held significantly more negative attitudes towards emotional infidelity than did men, with no gender differences in attitude held towards sexual infidelity. For sexual infidelity, more positive attitudes toward partner sexual infidelity were associated with lower reported distress for both men and women, with the relationship being significantly more pronounced for men. For emotional infidelity, attitude strength moderated the relationship between attitude towards emotional infidelity and distress about emotional infidelity. There was a significant relationship between attitudes toward partner emotional infidelity and distress when attitude strength was high but not when attitude strength was low.

Abstract:
Given the devastating role that infidelity has in the context of romantic relationships, it has been an important subject in the research. In this study, we begin by describing the characteristics associated with how information can be processed, taking into account two distinct information processing systems (Rational and Experiential), and then we explore the relationship between these thinking styles and the attitudes and intentions towards infidelity. It is expected that subjects who have a more Experiential Style of Thinking are more intuitive and impulsive, so they are expected to have more positive attitudes and intentions for infidelity. Thus, it is hypothesized that this relationship between thinking styles and infidelity can be mediated by commitment, taking into consideration their central role in maintaining a romantic relationship. Therefore, subjects with a dominant Experiential Thinking Style should manifest more positive attitudes and intentions towards infidelity, but given a higher level of commitment, this effect will no longer be verified. Individuals with a Rational Thinking Style should exhibit more negative attitudes and intentions for infidelity, regardless of the degree of commitment. Data were collected through the application of an online questionnaire and the sample consisted of 380 Portuguese heterosexual subjects who are in a romantic relationship. The results obtained, in general, do not corroborate the hypothesis of the study. Commitment was, in fact and in common with other studies, a good predictor of relationship maintenance, mediating the relationship of Experiential Thinking Style with Attitudes and Intentions towards Infidelity, also showing a significant influence on the Attitudes and Intentions more unfavorable towards Infidelity. On the other hand, contrary to expectations, the Thinking Styles do not seem to be significantly related to the Attitudes and Intentions of the subjects towards Infidelity.

Abstract:
Dissertação de mestrado integrado em Psicologia
In extramarital affairs, the literature has focused mostly on the perpetrator of infidelity and the victim, and there are not many studies that focus on the third person, a person with whom the perpetrator gets involved. Thus, the main objective of this study is to evaluate possible differences between individuals who were or had been a third person in a relationship and individuals who have never been, namely in terms of their personality, attitudes towards infidelity and self-esteem. Our sample consisted of 743 participants, 553 (74.4%) females and 190 (25.6%) males, aged between 18 and 63 years. Results showed statistically significant differences between the two groups. More specifically, individuals who were or had been a third person reported higher levels of extroversion and openness to experience, and more positive attitudes towards infidelity. On the other hand, significantly lower values were found for these individuals in the agreeableness dimension. No statistically significant differences were found regarding the self-esteem.

Abstract:
The main goal of this study was to explore if there was a match or a mismatch between the way where the subjects are in their relationships and the way that they are in them workplace following the Rusbult’s Investment Model dimensions (IMS-S; 1980, 1983; IMS; Farrell & Rusbult, 1981; Rusbult & Farrell, 1983). Consequently, if the existence of match or mismtach has implications on the dispositions of individuals facing infidelity, and in other hand, check them engagement on a real extra-dyadic relationship. The participants were romantically involved in a heterossexual relationship and had a professional activity (N=273; 237 women, 36 men; Mage=32.18; SD = 8.95). The results have showed that the subjects have the tendecy to express in their relationships the Satisfaction and the Engagement. Altough, they lay emphasion on the quality of available alternatives, and investment size at their workplaces. With those analyzes we can conclude the existance of a mismatch between romantic relationships and the labor domain. Afterwards the subjects that were willing new alternatives beyond them relationships, evidence less negative attitudes of infidelity. The majority of the subjects that have the tendecy to see alternative qualities in their relationships and their jobs, have reported that were not unfaithful. In other hand, we could check that was a minority that reported, with the sames tendecies, had an extra-dyadic behaviour. Were not found diferences in the remaining dimensions of the IMS-S and IMS (i.e., Satisfaction, Investiment Size and Commitment). Empirically, the results suggest that the job has a high importance in the subjects life. Also, an unfaithful aception is related with an involvment with other partner, outside of the current relationship

Abstract:
Political changes impacted the marriage customs and practices. The caste structure and the emergence of Rajputs indicate deviations from the theoretical concept of caste and as the clan structure of the Rajputs remained significant throughout. For the ruling elite, marriage was a channel for diplomacy. The rituals of marriage were a mixture of local customs and the Sastras, a syncretic fusion of Brahmanism with several disparate vibrant cultural traditions. Sati was a complex phenomenon. The number of women committing Sati declined in the Mughal period, precisely the period of hardening of attitude towards women and widow remarriage. Widows of non-elite families were fully aware of their property rights and petitioned the state whenever their rights were violated. Infidelity was prevalent across all sections of society, and the state played an active role as a regulating body. For the state marriage was an edifice through which social order could be maintained.

Abstract:
Sexual obsessions are perhaps the least understood manifestation of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and include worries about sexual orientation, infidelity, sexual deviations, incest, pregnancy, and blasphemous thoughts. Although about 25% of those with OCD are believed to have symptoms with sexual themes (S-OCD), mental health professionals have difficulty making a proper diagnosis. Few clinicians know how to treat this form of OCD, and there are very few materials available to guide clinicians. Treatment using cognitive-behavioral principles is sometimes unconventional, and few therapists receive training in how to address S-OCD their academic programs. Even well-educated psychology students and practicing therapists have stigmatizing attitudes toward sexual obsessions compared to other types of OCD content. This manual takes the best cognitive-behavior therapy strategies for the treatment of OCD, and illustrates how to apply them to clients with S-OCD. It contains direct written step-by-step instructions for therapists as well as educational handouts and diagrams for clients to promote learning.
