Abstract:
A novel process for the preparation of acetone is reported by gas-phase oxidation of propylene in the presence of H2 and O2 with Au supported TS-1 catalyst (Au/TS-1). By elevating the reaction temperature to 280 oC, Au/TS-1 catalyzes 11.6% propylene generating acetone with 70.6% selectivity, and 8.2% acetone in onepass yield. Acetone is originated from propylene oxide isomerization, which is mainly attributed to the surface of the Lewis base and high reaction temperature. Furthermore, small Au nanoparticle size promotes the reaction.

Gaudet, Jason. "Gas-Phase Epoxidation of Ethylene and Propylene." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/29341.

Abstract:
Catalysts consisting of silver on α-Al2O3, α-SiC, and β-SiC supports were synthesized and tested for catalytic performance in the gas-phase direct oxidation of ethylene to ethylene oxide. For this study, which used no promoters, ethylene oxidation selectivity of SiC-supported catalysts ranged from 10 to 60% and conversion from 0-4.5%. Silicon carbide supported catalysts exhibited poor performance except for a surface-modified β-SiC-supported catalyst, which demonstrated conversion and selectivity similar to that of an α-Al2O3-supported catalyst. This Ag/β-SiC catalyst was further investigated with a kinetic study, and the reaction orders were found to be 0.18 with respect to ethylene and 0.34 with respect to oxygen. The kinetic results were consistent with Langmuir-Hinshelwood rate expressions developed from single-site and dual-site reaction mechanisms. Gold nanoparticles on titanium oxide and titania-silica supports are active for the formation of propylene oxide by the oxidation of propylene with hydrogen and oxygen mixtures. This study investigates the effect of cyanide treatment on gold supported on titanosilicate zeolite supports (Au/TS-1). Catalysts treated with weak solutions of sodium cyanide resulted in preferential removal of small gold particles, while catalysts treated with strong solutions resulted in dissolution of the gold and re-precipitation as gold (+1) cyanide. X-ray absorption spectroscopy demonstrated that catalysts which produce propylene oxide in the presence of hydrogen and oxygen mixtures had supported gold (+3) oxide nanoparticles of 3 nm size after synthesis, which were reduced to gold metal at reaction conditions. Samples treated with strong solutions of sodium cyanide resulted in supported gold (+1) cyanide particles of large size, 9-11 nm. These particles did not produce propylene oxide but, surprisingly, showed high selectivity toward propylene hydrogenation. Increasing gold (+1) cyanide particle size resulted in a decrease in hydrogenation activity. TS-1 and Au/TS-1 surfaces were studied with laser Raman spectroscopy. Surface fluorescence was substantially reduced with a low-temperature ozone treatment, allowing observation of titanosilicate framework bands. Hydrocarbon vibrations are observed for TS-1 and Au/TS-1 under propylene. Density functional theory models indicated that propylene adsorbed to a metal site along the Ï bond would show a Raman spectrum very similar to gas-phase propylene except for out-of-plane C-H vibrations, which would be moved to higher energy. This adsorption spectrum, with out-of-plane vibrations shifted to higher energy, was observed for both TS-1 and Au/TS-1. Langmuir adsorption isotherms were generated for both TS-1 and Au/TS-1, and a scaling factor derived from propylene uptake experiments allowed these isotherms to be scaled to propylene coverage of titanium.

Lewis, Richard J. "The application of Cs-exchanged tungstophosphoric acid as an additive in the direct synthesis of hydrogen peroxide and the use of Au-Pd/TS-1 in a one-pot approach to cyclohexanone oxime production." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2016. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/95334/.

Full text
Abstract:
The work presented within this thesis can be separated into two distinct parts. The first investigates the direct synthesis of hydrogen peroxide from molecular hydrogen and oxygen using gold-palladium supported catalysts and caesium exchanged tungstophosphoric acid as an acidic additive. The direct synthesis of H2O2 presents an environmentally friendly alternative to the current industrial, anthraquinone process. However for the direct route to be viable a variety of issues must be addressed. Primarily catalytic selectivity towards H2O2 is a major concern for the majority of catalysts active for H2O2 synthesis, with the degradation of H2O2 through hydrogenation or decomposition reported for a number of catalysts within the literature. The use of acid either during catalyst preparation or as part of the reaction solution has previously been shown to improve selectivity towards H2O2. Furthermore acidic supports, including heteropolyacid, have been observed to produce catalysts with greater selectivity than those with a higher isoelectric point and in turn provide higher yields of H2O2. This work investigates the ability of caesium exchanged heteropolyacids to improve catalytic activity towards H2O2 when used in addition to Au-Pd supported catalysts, in particular 2.5 wt. % Au - 2.5 wt. Pd/TiO2. The second part of this work is concerned with the ammoximation of cyclohexanone to cyclohexanone oxime via the in-situ formation of H2O2, in a one-pot style process. The conditions associated with ammoximation of cyclohexanone that is the presence of elevated temperatures and basic conditions, are considered extremely harsh for H2O2 stability. The in-situ generation of H2O2 during the ammoximation of cyclohexanone to cyclohexanone oxime would yield significant reductions in overall costs of the ammoximation reaction. Primarily these costs are associated with the purchasing, transport, storage and dilution of H2O2. This work determines the feasibility of a one-pot ammoximation process via in-situ H2O2 formation. Firstly, reaction conditions are established for this process and following this the role of catalyst design in improving selectivity towards cyclohexanone oxime as well as cyclohexanone conversion for this reaction is studied.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
Metallic thin films have been extensively used as coatings, interconnections, sensors and as part of micro and nano-electromechanical devices (MEMS and NEMS). The conventional substrates utilized to deposit those films are normally rigid, such as silicon. However, for applications where the substrate is subjected to significant mechanical strain (e.g. automotive coatings, electronic textiles, bioengineering, etc.) the film-substrate system needs to be flexible and conformable. Compliant polymeric substrates are ideal candidates for such a task. Some interesting mechanical properties not achieved with conventional rigid substrates can be transmitted to the film by the use of polymeric substrates. In this work, mechanical properties of 50 to 300 nm gold films deposited by thermal deposition over two thermoplastic substrates are investigated. A commercial thermoplastic, Polysulfone (“PSF”), and a home-synthesized isophthalic polyester based on the reaction of 4, 4′-(1-hydroxyphenylidene) phenol and isophthaloyl dichloride (“BAP”) [1] were used as raw materials for substrate production. Substrates were selected based on their good mechanical properties and flexibility. The use of two different substrates allows us to investigate the influence of the substrate mechanical properties in the bimaterial response. Substrates of 80 μm thickness were prepared by solution casting and cut to rectangular shapes of nominal dimensions of 30 mm × 5 mm. High purity (99.999%) commercial gold splatters were used for film deposition. Gold films with thickness of 50, 100, 200, and 300 nm were deposited onto PSF substrates by thermal evaporation inside a vacuum chamber at 3×10−5 Torr. Au films with 100 nm thickness were also deposited over BAP substrates. Four replicates of each type were deposited (at the same time) and used for tensile testing. Tensile testing of Au/PSF (film thickness 50–300 nm) and Au/BAP (film thickness 100 nm) specimens was conducted. Tests of the neat PSF and BAP substrates (6 replicates) were also conducted as a baseline. Tensile testing was conducted in a small universal testing machine with a load cell of 200 N and a cross head speed of 0.05 mm/min. The film mechanical properties were extracted from the tensile response of the film/substrate system, considered as a bimaterial. Based on sum of forces and strain compatibility, the film modulus (Ef) and stress (σf) can be extracted from characteristics of the bimaterial (EBim, σBim) and substrate (Es, σs), to generate a stress-strain curve for the film, see e.g. [2], Ef=1Af[ABimEBim−AsEs]=1+tstfEBim−tstfEs(1a)σf=1Af[P−Ps]=1+tstfσBim−tstfσs(1b) where P is the applied load, A = wt is the cross sectional area and sub-index “Bim” corresponds to the film-substrate bimaterial (ABim = w(ts+tf)). Figure 1 shows film stress (σ)-strain (ε) representative curves for Au films with different thicknesses extracted from the Au/PSF bimaterials. The film behavior presents only a small region of plasticity close to the ultimate strain. Thus, the numerical value of the maximum stress (strength) is close to its yield strength. The large plasticity of the substrate may hinder the plasticity of gold when acting as a bimaterial. As observed from this figure, the film modulus, strength and ultimate strain increase as the film thickness decreases, evidencing a “thickness-effect” not observed in bulk materials. Slightly different properties were obtained for the Au films deposited over the BAP substrate, which evidences some substrate-dependency of the film properties.
