Abstract:
Literature connects sports with creating a feeling of unity and nation building amongst people. In a country such as Rwanda, a nation that is rebuilding itself after ethnic tensions that resulted into genocide against one of the ethnic groups, the Tutsi, it is important to understand the role of the new national identity in the process of rebuilding the country. Subsequently, this study aimed at investigating the link between national identity and sport specifically how professionals in Rwanda, as football fans, perceive their national identity. To this end, the study used survey questionnaire to investigate perceptions of new national identity. The findings relate football to the new national identity based on unity and professionals identify themselves with that new national identity. These findings suggest that football plays an important role in building the national identity for a country. This study presents original findings about new Rwandan national identity and its representation and, thus, fills a gap in existing literature. It also serves as a basis to study further the Rwandan national identity.

Abstract:
Texas has a rich tradition of Early Music ensembles that dates back to 1969. However, there is little reliable information based on statistical data collection and analysis concerning Texas Early Music consumers. Little is known about why they attend Early Music performances or other important factors that affect the Early Music industry. Through the use of an extensive survey and accompanying statistical analysis, this study answers many questions regarding Early Music consumers in the State of Texas. This study collected demographic and psychographic data in January 2020 about the Early Music concert-going public in three major Texas cities - Dallas, Austin, and Houston. Other factors were identified in two primary areas: audience characteristics and ticket pricing practices.

Abstract:
It has been estimated that one third of the world's population does not have access to "adequate" health care. Some 1.6 billion people live in countries experiencing "concentrated" acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemics. Many countries in Africa--and other low-income countries--are in dire need of help providing adequate health care services to their citizens. They require more hands-on care from Western health workers--and training so more African health workers can eventually care for their own citizens. But these countries also need assistance acquiring and implementing both texts--the body of medical information potentially available to them--and technology--the means by which that information can be conveyed. This dissertation looks at these issues and others from a multi-faceted approach. It combines a survey of the developers of Web sites designed for use by health workers in low-income countries and a proposal for a novel approach to communication theory, which could help improve health communication and other social marketing practices. It also includes an extensive review of literature regarding a number of topics related to these issues. To improve healthcare services in low-income countries, several things should occur. First, more health workers--and others--could visit African countries and other places to provide free, hands-on medical care, as this researcher's group did in Uganda. Such trips are ideal occasions for studying the cultural differences between "mzungu" (white man) and the Ugandan people. A number of useful medical texts have been written for health workers in low-income countries. Others will be published as new health information becomes available. But on what medium will they be published? Computers? Personal digital assistants? During the past 10 years the Internet became an ideal venue for conveying information. Unfortunately, people in target countries such as Uganda encounter cultural differences when such new technologies are diffused. This dissertation looks at cultural and technological difficulties encountered by people in low-income countries who attempt to diffuse information and communication technologies (ICT). Once a technology has been successfully adopted, someone will look for ways to use it to help others. There are hundreds of sites on the Internet--built by Web developers in Western countries--that are designed for use by health workers in low-income countries. However, these Web developers also experience cultural and technological differences, based on their knowledge of and attitudes toward best practices in their field. This research includes a survey of Web developers which determined their attitudes toward best practices in their field and tested this researcher's hypothesis that there is no significant difference among the developers' attitudes toward the content on their sites, their audience's cultural needs and the various technological needs their audience has. It was found that the Web developers agree with 17 of 18 perceived best practices and that there is a significant difference between Web developers' attitudes toward their audience's technological needs and their attitudes toward quality content and the audience's cultural needs. Creation of the survey herein resulted in this researcher generating a new way of thinking about communication theory--called digital research cycles. The survey was based on a review of literature and is rooted in the belief that any successful communication of a computer-mediated message in the information age is a behavior which is influenced by the senders' and receivers' attitudes and knowledge about textual style, the audience, technology and the subject matter to which the message pertains.

Scollen, Rebecca. "Building new theatre audiences: Post performance audience reception in action." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 2002. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/36428/1/36428_Digitised%20Thesis.pdf.

Abstract:
The aim of this research is to arrive at an effective method for gathering and analysing nontheatregoers' reception of theatrical performance. It is anticipated that this method will provide insight into non-theatregoers' reasons for non-attendance, their reactions to theatre productions, and the likelihood that they might change their attitudes towards theatregoing and become theatre attenders in the future. A combined methodical approach to audience reception is created by adapting and combining the methods of Sauter (1986), Lidstone (1996), Knodel (1993) and Krueger (1994), and the model of Miles and Huberman (1984). This approach consists of a collection of questionnaires, a series of post performance group discussions, and analytical methods designed for examining qualitative data. This approach is tested and refined across three studies: a 1997 Pilot Study, a 1998 La Boite Theatre Study, and a 2000 Queensland Theatre Company Study. The primary result of this research is the emergence of the Scollen Post Performance Audience Reception (SPP AR) method for audience development. This method is the refined final version of the rigorously tested combined approach. Other results include the formation of a non-theatregoer profile; an understanding of how non-theatregoers perceive performances; the discovery that gender, age, and income have no direct impact on theatre attendance or reception of theatrical performance; confirmation that exposure to performance and an arts education increases interest and confidence in theatregoing; and that self and peer education is an effective way for non-theatregoers to learn about theatre.

Abstract:
This application is for the U.S. Department of Education’s Education Innovation and Research Program to secure funding for the development of an application for touchscreen devices that allows students to record real time instructional feedback to their instructors that is collected during, rather than at the conclusion of, a lesson. Student feedback to teachers can be a valuable tool to help improve instruction. This feedback, shared with teachers, would help identify areas for instructional shifts to better meet the needs of students. Embedded in this proposal are the following research questions: What sort of feedback options (format, timing, quantity) do high school students and teachers find most useful in a touch-screen app? To what degree can a touchscreen app provide technically adequate measures of instruction? What are teachers’ perceptions of this feedback?

Franzén, Stina. "A Matter of Relations : A reception study of global audiences’ interpretations of, and interest in, the Norwegian terrorist attacks in 2011." Thesis, Stockholms universitet, Institutionen för mediestudier, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-104771.

Full text
Abstract:
This Master’s thesis investigates the matter of relations as a contributing factor to foreign audiences’ interest in, and interpretation of, news events. An explorative designed quantitative study is conducted based on the example of the terrorist attacks in Norway, 2011. First, a questionnaire was created and shared online with audiences from 53 different countries, with the target group of members of the international exchange student organization Youth For Understanding. 318 responses were collected and analysed in SPSS and the thesis then analyses behavioural-, knowledge- and attitude responses through a quantitative content analysis. The findings are discussed in relation to earlier research on news value, psychology, global compassion and cultural studies.   In the results, it is found that foreign audiences’ relationships to the affected foreign country matter to a large extent, both seen to personal relationships such as having friends or family in or around Norway; but also features such as the respondents’ ability to identify with, and relate to, the news. The survey results show that a relation to Norway contributes to more in-depth knowledge and a higher interest rate in the news about the terrorist attacks, and also how relations to Norway affected the respondents’ cognitive and emotive memories of the event. The author recommends further studies with news examples tested on other, larger populations in order to reach a more reliable, valid and generalizable result.

In today’s thriving performing art industry, the term audience studies is becoming more and more important. Therefore, the current audience survey sampling model of performing art still has many shortcomings. In most cases, the population structure of performing art show’s audiences is difficult to predict before the end of the show, so it is quite difficult to extract the sample to conform to the population structure, and after the show, finding voluntary research participants within a certain period of time is another difficult issue. Whether it is the rationality of the situation or the representativeness of the sample, there is still a lot of room for improvement. Therefore, it is necessary to design a new audience survey mode. Hence, in order to solve the above problems, this study aims to design a new sampling survey model, which is a research survey applicable to performing art’s audiences. This method analyzes previous audience studies and existing sampling theories, extracts its advantages, and designs the sampling model of this study, “Floating Sampling”. In this study, we collaborate with the local traditional puppet show performing groups in Tainan to conduct the verification of the “Floating Sampling” method in this study. The “Floating Sampling” proposed in this study invites the target subjects beforehand by understanding the expectations of the performers, and adjusts the composition of the tested samples during the performance. It is hoped that a smaller number of samples will produce equivalent result as the samples of the past standard survey. After the initial study through three performances, the final sample number is close to the distribution of population adults and children, and in subsequent experiments, it was found that fewer samples obtained by using Floating Sampling survey model and the samples obtained by using the past survey model do not produce significantly different results, and the validity of the samples of the questionnaire and the rationality of the investigation are resolved. The “Floating Sampling” solves the problem of the validity of the survey and the representativeness of the samples, and at the same time solves the research ethics related issues, and make the audience studies on the performing art a step further.

Roy, Diane Carole. "Performing abroad: ‘Lucnica Slovak National Folklore Ballet’ in Melbourne, 2007." Phd thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/8868.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the significance of a Slovak traditional music and dance performance in Melbourne in October 2007 by Lucnica: Slovak National Folklore Ballet’. While the troupe represents a genre of traditional music performance that is revered by many Slovaks, it is also criticized in the community and scholarly narratives as being ‘artificial’. This thesis shows that Lucnica’s performances are deeply significant, however, and that they constitute a legitimate form of music folklore practice for performers and Slovak audiences, embodying the Slovak landscape and history, despite artistic modifications. However, by taking an interactional viewpoint, this thesis shows that on foreign soil, complex meanings were thrown into relief. While Lucnica’s stated mission is to spread Slovak traditional music culture abroad, it was found that in multicultural Melbourne, Lucnica’s performance generated a variety of discursive strands. The same performance confirmed and celebrated Slovak ethnicity for Slovak Australians, and at the same time, contributed to the discourse of British hegemony and marginalization of the same. A second, but equally important focus of the thesis, is that it addresses the dialectic between theory and data. Ethnographic notes were analyzed according to Goffman’s model for non-verbal interaction, an ethnographic interview was analyzed according to the methods of Conversation Analysis, and an audience survey was conducted. These varied data and methodologies were unified by adopting an over-arching Foucauldian theoretical framework, thus aligning theory, data, and methodologies, and giving findings added cogency.

This research focuses on the Effect of National Indentity and Body Image on Acceptance attitude of Korean TV programs’ Audience who using Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Beauty Products using Korean TV program Involvement as a mediator. There is a famous TV hostess who has found her true self after taking plastic surgery for almost 30 times, but is still unsatisfied with her own cosmetic look simply because “She needs to be more beautiful although she’s already so.”Obviously, those main characters in Taiwan TVs’ Korean programs have been regarded as “plastic surgery catalogue” and representative of beautician, they even lead the fashion trend of plastic surgery in Taiwan. With the study on the books, magazines, reports, and market research, we delivered 300 questionnaires by means of “convenience sample” to those audiences of TV’s Korean programs locating at northern Taiwan, and feedback with 268 samples. Below are the research outcomes : 1.The body image of Korean TV programs’Audience causes a significant impact on thein Korean TV program Involvement. 2.Korean TV program Involvement of Korean TV programs’Audience causes a significant impact on the acceptance attitude of aesthetic plastic surgery beauty products. 3.Finally, some practical recommendations for females who may be interested in cosmetic surgery and cosmetic clinics were proposed. In terms of the study limitations of the study, some suggestions for the forward operation were also recommended. “To be pretty” is the natural born personality. We sincerely suggest those people in ‘beauty industry’ can focus on reducing surgery risks and developing men’s market so the real ‘beauty followers’ will take action.

Sibango, Babalwa. "An analysis of the views of newspaper readers regarding selected incidents of intergroup controversy in post-Apartheid South Africa." Diss., 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/22206.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigated the nature of opinions and attitudes expressed in letters to South African newspapers regarding selected incidents of interracial controversy, namely the Botes (2010) and Forum for Black Journalists (FBJ) (2008) incidents. A qualitative and quantitative content analysis of these letters was conducted to gauge the attitudes that writers displayed towards members of their cultural group (ingroup) and members of other cultural groups (outgroups). The results of the qualitative analysis indicated that individuals in a racial group have different perspectives of in- and outgroup members. The results of the quantitative analysis, however, showed that the majority of writers tend to display positive attitudes towards ingroup members and negative attitudes towards out groups. The dominance of positive attitudes towards ingroups and negative attitudes towards outgroups can be attributed to myths and discourses circulating in postapartheid South Africa and the current social climate in general. The study concluded that although individuals’ attitudes may differ from the stark negative attitudes displayed towards outgroups during the apartheid era, negative attitudes towards outgroups persist.

German, Myna. "Religion and ingroup identification as variables impacting secular newspaper consumption: Mormons and Orthodox Jews compared to mainstream Protestants." Thesis, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/2189.

Full text
Abstract:
This study intends to discover distinctions between two minority groups, Mormons and Orthodox Jews, compared to a mainstream Protestant group, the Methodists, in terms of newspaper behavior. It intends to probe for differences in newspaper readership frequency and uses (Berelson, 1949) between religious minority group members and majority group members. It originated with the belief that religion (type) and degree of ingroup identification in the minority communities (stronger) would lead to greater newspaper avoidance and limit newspaper use primarily for information/public affairs, rather than Berelson's (1949) other categorizations of socialization, respite, entertainment. Indeed, minority-majority distinctions did not hold. Important differences emerged between religious and more secular individuals in all communities. It was the degree of religiosity that most deeply impacted newspaper use, not denominational ties. The more individuals scored highly on a "religion-as-spiritual-quest" factor, the less they read newspapers, particularly the business newspaper. For "spiritual questors" of all denominations, the house of worship, with its myriad activities, served as a leisure-time base and, for them, recreational use of the newspaper was minimal.
