Abstract:
This study attempted to investigate male-female EFL students’ perception on the use of audio visual aids in learning vocabulary mastery. The aims of this study were to finding out the male EFL students’ perception on the use of audio visual aids in learning vocabulary, the female EFL students’ perception on the use of audio visual aids in learning vocabulary, and how audio visual aids help students in improving their vocabulary mastery. The participants were 19 students at the tenth grade students in one of senior high schools in Ciamis. This study employed one type of qualitative strategies that was using case study. The writer used three instruments to gain the data, they were questionnaire, interview and observation. The result for the first question asserted that male students perceive the use of audio visual aids was good to be used in learning process, especially in learning vocabulary. Moreover, the result for the second question revealed that female students perceive audio visual aids have some benefits in learning process, especially in learning vocabulary. Then, the result for the third question asserted that audio visual aids help the students in improving their vocabulary mastery. It can be concluded that male-female EFL gave positive perceptions toward the use of audio visual in learning vocabulary and audio visual aids help the students to improve their vocabulary mastery. Besides, it is suggested for the English teacher, it is hoped that this study could be a new way in giving the new situation in the classroom. Moreover, it is suggested for the students because the most students feel helped in learning process, especially in learning vocabulary by using audio visual aids. For further researchers, the result of this study can be used as reference in the same field with the different interest. Keywords: perception, gender, audio visual aids, vocabulary, vocabulary mastery

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate to what extent the widespread use of audio-visual aids with Libyan EFL university instructors. Also, it is to examine how such audio-visual aids are appropriate to Arabic-speaking Libyan undergraduate students specializing in the English language as to be teachers of English after graduation. A combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches for collecting data was followed. The quantitative approach was based on a closed-ended questionnaire to check Libyan EFL university instructors’ opinions towards using audio-visual aids within the class whereas the qualitative approach was based on observations to notice the effectiveness of audio-visual aids in the class. Thirty four Libyan EFL university instructors participated in filling in the questionnaire sent via personal e-mails and Facebook messenger. This was followed by twenty four undergraduate students at Tripoli University (Faculty of Education – Department of English) who were observed while attending lectures on Listening and Speaking. The obtained results of the study showed how audio-visual aids had a strong effect on students' interaction. The implications of this study suggest that Libyan EFL university instructors have to consider audio-visual aids as a means to motivate students’ interactions. They are highly recommended to focus on the integration of audio-visual aids in teaching foreign languages.

Abstract:
This study investigates the use of audio-visual aids in the EFL classes in Libyan secondary schools. Specifically, it aims to determine how audio-visual aids could work as an excellent motivational instrument for teachers and students in Kufrah secondary schools. Two sets of questionnaires were administered to teachers and students to clarify the needed information. Kufrah secondary schools were chosen for the survey study. 80 students, and 20 teachers were randomly selected. Through the questionnaires made by the researcher, the data was collected, organized and analysed using statistical techniques like percentages. The results of the study revealed that the use of audio-visual aids to develop EFL students seemed to be effective, as indicated by the teachers and students. The results also showed fewer teacher training opportunities in schools and restricted administrative support. The researcher recommends appropriate teacher training, adequate audio-visual equipment and material, and needed administrative support to ensure the optimum use of audio-visual aids, ensuring the learner's maximum benefit.

Abstract:
The study described in this dissertation was conducted during a three week period and encompassed four senior high school English classes. The data derived from the study were elicited from a pre test of knowledge and a pre treatment attitude survey; a post test of knowledge and a post treatment attitude survey and a delayed post test of knowledge. The four groups of students were given the following treatments within the Shakespearean drama unit on Hamlet: (1) Group I - Students in this group were shown four teaching films on Hamlet and read the play aloud in class with students taking parts. (2) Group 2 - Students listened to a taped recording of the play and followed along with their books. (3) Group 3 - Students in this group listened to the taped recording of the play and were shown the four teaching films. (4) Group 4 - Students in this group, which was the control group, read the play aloud in class with students taking parts. The research questions which guided the research and were addressed through the statistical analysis were as follows: (1) What significant knowledge differences, if any, exist between and among the groups receiving the non-print media treatments and that group which did not? (2) Is there a difference in appreciation (attitudes) of Shakespearean drama between the groups which received the non-print media treatments and the group which did not? The statistical analysis of the data revealed that although all groups improved on the knowledge post test, groups 1 and 2 improved the most. Attitude scores also increased for group 1. Interestingly, the difference between pre treatment and post treatment attitude scores for group 2 was negligible, and for groups 3 and 4 decreased. The following conclusions were then drawn from the statistical analysis: (1) The use of non-print media does improve knowledge of and attitude about Shakespearean drama. (2) The use of non-print media should be limited, for example, to either taped recording or film for optimum results.

Robertson, Charles Kenneth. "Developing edutainment principles and practices for audio-visual representations of Biblical books." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/52185.

Full text
Abstract:
Dissertation (PhD)--University of Stellenbosch, 2001.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The main purpose of the study is to develop a model and to establish certain principles for writing a script treatment (personal pictures) of a book of the Bible. Personal pictures can be identified as the most important component of the production (filmic creation) and marketing (promulgation) processes of a fully dramatised audio-visual representation of a biblical book. The study deals primarily with personal pictures. Changes in the communication and perception of biblical content are investigated. The study focuses mainly on the dissemination of such content through audio-visual Bible products (end products). The study contends that audio-visual Bible communications for children and adults should have an educational foundation. The other main dimension of all audio-visual Bible is the entertainment it provides to viewers (patrons). The educational and entertainment facets of end products are described here as edutainment. It is important for end products to have edutainment value as perceived by socio-economically diverse peoples, of both Christian and non-Christian (non-religious) persuasions. Aspects which can contribute to the edutainment value of fully dramatised audio-visual Bible products are expounded. An audio-visual model, which defines the basis for the filmic creation and promulgation of an end product, is explained and its elements described. The determinants of the filmic creation and promulgation processes, some of which have a greater educational impact and some which have a greater entertainment impact, are explicated. An important factor is to involve patrons in the filmic creation and promulgation processes, and to help them to feel part of these processes. Writing the personal pictures of a Bible book is investigated. A personal pictures model is put forward to explain how the personal pictures can be written. A variety of guidelines to help the writer (owner) write the personal pictures of a book are presented. These guidelines deal with aspects such as writing the narrative, selecting the context of the storytelling, gathering and using background information, using enhancement factors, and implementing requirements of the users. The personal pictures already written of two Bible books are assessed. An explanation is given of why the books of Ruth and Hebrews, one from the Old and one from the New Testament, are chosen for such assessment. These personal pictures are found to be deficient and new personal pictures are written for both books, using the model and guidelines given. An empirical survey is undertaken of the personal pictures of one of the two books assessed, namely Ruth. The analysis of the empirical research finds that the respondents are able to visualise a film of Ruth with edutainment value after reading the personal pictures. The results of the survey point to the importance of both the educational and entertainment aspects in end products. Some further valuable deductions can be made from the study: Audio-visual Bible products are beneficial to convey biblical content to patrons. A model and guidelines are presented for writing good quality personal pictures. Patrons can profitably be engaged in the filmic creation and promulgation processes of fully dramatised audio-visual Bible products. A few constraints have been encountered which have a limiting effect on the study. The study highlights a number of important areas which can be further researched.

Abstract:
The purpose of this project was to design, create, and implement a pilot for an adapted physical education (APE), DVD-Video teaching aid. This creative project has resulted in a DVD-Video that can be used as an instructional tool and resource for physical educators. It follows the teaching methods and skills from the wheelchair basketball chapter in Davis (2002), featuring strategies and ideas that can aid in the successful teaching of physical education (basketball) to individuals of all abilities. The use of interactive DVD-Video in a learning environment is seen as an innovative and exciting delivery method for instructional purposes. It is proposed that the majority of learners would enjoy using, and acquire a very significant learning experience from using, interactive DVD-Video instruction. Therefore, it is anticipated that physical educators would get a meaningful APE training experience from an interactive instructional DVD-Video such as the one piloted for this creative project.

Corpus linguistics research on audio description (AD) – the verbal rendering of visual information generally targeted at people with visual impairment – has focused on film and museums. The present corpus gathers opera AD scripts from the Liceu opera house (Bacelona) and Teatro Real (Madrid), and sorts them into four subcorpora, two devoted to AD throughout the performance and two comprising audio introductions (AI). I set to interrogate where opera AD falls in the spoken-written language continuum. The results suggest that all subcorpora are of a high lexical density, and in terms of lexical variation, the standardised type-token ratio remains below 50%. The mean sentence and word length, and the Flesch-Szigriszt readability results lead us to place the AIs closer to written language than ADs.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter contributes to the understudied research areas of Nordic foreign aid media history and Nordic co-operations concerning the mobilization of public opinion on foreign aid. The study asks: What exchanges of ideas regarding information strategies took place between the Nordic aid agencies during the launch of the Second Development Decade (1970s)? Utilizing governmental archive documents the study demonstrates that Nordic co-operations shifted from embracing “Nordicness” in field projects to using Nordic connections as a backstage think-tank for mutual, but domestic, goals of public persuasion, focusing on film as an information device. It is revealed that cooperative efforts were hampered by the agencies’ lack of experience in audio-visual co-production, by different discursive understandings of “development” and by the difficulty to transnationally co-operate around nationally grounded information regimes.

Abstract:
AbstractThe paper presents the application of the research project “MEET - Multifaceted Experience for Enhancing Territories” at the “Museo del Territorio di Riccione”. The project aims at enhancing the local cultural heritage by involving institutions, professionals, and citizens in the realization of a co-designed interactive exhibition. The enhancement considers the narrative processes strategic for the inclusion of and broader access by different types of public and for a more effective learning process. After explaining the different types of narratives used in the installations, the contribution lists all the phases of the project, synthesised in a visual roadmap. The contribution is then carried out by mentioning all the stakeholders involved – together with their role – the cultural assets enhanced, the development of the process that brought to the creation of the audio-visual content and the realization of the exhibition path. Finally, in the conclusion, the research team presents the result of the qualitative and quantitative evaluation phase conducted through questionnaires useful to understand the actual appreciation and the effectiveness of the project.

Abstract:
Aviation English is unique in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) because in the aeronautical field, language is inseparable from safety. The passengers' lives and safety depend on the accurate communication between pilots and air traffic control officers (ATCOs), on the precision of their language. My paper puts forward the suitability and effectiveness of using audio-visual aids (video clips, photographs, diagrams, maps, authentic audio recordings of voices with a variety of accents and pronunciations encountered in international flights) in aviation English teaching. The use of audio video digital technologies helps the students (especially aerospace engineering majors and air force academy students) to become familiar with the operational environment of aviation, to obtain a 'feel' for the conditions in which pilots and controllers communicate. Properly selected and relevant digital video or photographs "introduce" the students into the airport architecture (taxiways, runways, hangars, cargo areas etc), in the control tower or in the pilots' cockpit, into the world of pilots and ATCOs, of technicians and aerospace engineers. I will show that what matters even more is the teacher's passion for the field and his/her consequent ability to devise the best and most motivating pre- and post-watching activities and discussions to stimulate the students to debate the aviation incidents presented, to practice the vocabulary they are likely to encounter in an aviation context, the standardized coded phraseology used in pilot-controller conversations to communicate clear, concise, unambiguous, internationally recognized messages of a routine nature, and the spontaneous, non-coded "plain" English which is crucial to master in non-routine, unexpected or emergency operational situations. The paper proposes a content-based, communicative approach to teaching Aviation English, supported by audio-video technology - which Generation Y students in particular find engaging and challenging. Technology properly embedded in the course and relevant to projects or seminar activities maintains the attention of today's visual learners focused on the subject matter and inspires and motivates them to research and discover more about the communication in the aviation field.

Abstract:
Female-headed households often get left behind in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) programming and policy. This SLH Learning Paper presents findings and recommendations for action, from the participatory video research project, ‘Sanitation, health and livelihood issues for female-headed households in Tasikmalaya’. The project supported eight women in Awiluar village, Tasikmalaya, (a peri-urban community in west-Java, Indonesia), to explore the challenges they face and ideas for solution using a participatory video process. The process included activities to develop personal confidence, teamwork, collective and visual storytelling, reflective enquiry, communication skills and audio-visual technical skills. The women collectively created a video to communicate their sanitation, health and livelihood priorities, which was screened with local government officials and community members promoting vital dialogue and encouraging action. The aim of the project was to ensure that the specific needs and long-term interests of female-headed households are better met going forward. Further details on the approach can be found in the accompanying SLH Learning Paper, 'Using participatory video for empowerment in sanitation programming'; this describes key activities involved and their value to programming. It aims to spark sanitation and hygiene researchers’ interest in the potential for using participatory video.
