Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate to what extent the widespread use of audio-visual aids with Libyan EFL university instructors. Also, it is to examine how such audio-visual aids are appropriate to Arabic-speaking Libyan undergraduate students specializing in the English language as to be teachers of English after graduation. A combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches for collecting data was followed. The quantitative approach was based on a closed-ended questionnaire to check Libyan EFL university instructors’ opinions towards using audio-visual aids within the class whereas the qualitative approach was based on observations to notice the effectiveness of audio-visual aids in the class. Thirty four Libyan EFL university instructors participated in filling in the questionnaire sent via personal e-mails and Facebook messenger. This was followed by twenty four undergraduate students at Tripoli University (Faculty of Education – Department of English) who were observed while attending lectures on Listening and Speaking. The obtained results of the study showed how audio-visual aids had a strong effect on students' interaction. The implications of this study suggest that Libyan EFL university instructors have to consider audio-visual aids as a means to motivate students’ interactions. They are highly recommended to focus on the integration of audio-visual aids in teaching foreign languages.

Abstract:
Technology development in the modern era assists teachers in creating a collaborative learning environment. Despite the effectiveness of audio-visual materials in teaching and learning, there are still some hinderances in its usage. This study investigated the effects of audio-visual aids on students’ academic performance in social studies in junior secondary schools. This study is an experimental study and the sample comprised of 50 junior secondary schools. The audio-visual was in powerpoint format with concepts of marriage as material of the social studies. Students were given test questions after been taught with the Audio-visual and the results of the test are indicators of their academic performance. Analysis of the data was carried out using analysis of t-test analysis. The findings established that audio-visual aids had positive effect on students’ performance and there is no significant difference between the performance of male and female students taught using audio-visual aids. This study concluded that audio-visual method of teaching had positive effect on student's academic performance. Thus, this implies that the conventional method of teaching is less effective and performance oriented. It was however recommended that adequate supervision, monitoring and the use of audio-visual in teaching social studies by teachers of the schools should be encouraged and given adequate attention.

Abstract:
Background: It is of paramount importance that patients be educated of their clinical conditions and the available treatment options. Audio-visual aids can be used as a beneficial modality to help the clinicians in the educational task by presenting the necessary information to the patient in a simpler manner. Methods: A randomized controlled trial was done to assess the retention of knowledge amongst periodontitis patients after receiving oral health education using audio-visual aids. The effect of audio-visual aids was compared to standard education in the form of verbal narration for periodontal patient education. A total of 60 consented periodontitis patients were recruited for the study and randomly allocated to audio-visual group or control group according to computer generated randomization. All patients received a pre-test questionnaire to assess their baseline knowledge regarding oral health and treatment modalities. A post-test questionnaire was taken immediately after receiving the two sets of education to assess the retention level of knowledge. The questionnaire contained 15 multiple-choice questions. Results: There was no significant difference in baseline knowledge between the two groups (p value=0.317). Patients receiving the audio-visual aids had significantly higher scores for the post-test (mean±SD=7.56±2.31) when compared with patients receiving standard education (mean±SD=5.73±2.94; p value=0.01*). Conclusions: Retention of knowledge is significantly higher in the audio-visual group when compared to the control group. Audio-visual aids can be an effective medium for patient education in day-to-day dental practice.

Abstract:
Understanding speech in background noise presents a significant challenge to listeners with hearing loss. Even though hearing aids are very successful in restoring listening in quieter conditions, current devices provide only limited benefit in noise. While seeing a talker can improve intelligibility, visual benefit has typically been quantified using rather unrealistic audio-visual speech materials. Here, we investigated visual benefit using realistic effortful speech from the ECO-SiN corpus. Audio-only, audio-visual, and visual-only sentences were presented in three simulated real-world environments at their realistic sound levels in a 3-D loudspeaker array equipped with integrated high-resolution video projectors. Ten young normal-hearing (NH) listeners as well as 18 older listeners with sensorineural hearing loss participated in the experiment with and without their own hearing aids. While the NH listeners rapidly hit ceiling, listeners with hearing loss struggled to understand the audio-only sentences in the louder background noise—even when aided. There was, however, demonstrable visual benefit of up to 16% in the audio-visual condition for both groups, which is significantly less than commonly reported. Future research will explore if the individual outcomes of the audio-visual ECO-SIN test better reflects real-world hearing experience and how far this is maintained when using virtual reality glasses.

This paper reviews the literature on the use of audio-visual to improve lower proficiency learners’ English Language. Audio-visual aids have been very beneficial to make learning interesting among the English as a second language (ESL) because it facilitates learning. Teachers have to be innovative in their pedagogy approach to make language teaching effective. Today, teachers are no longer dependent on traditional method of teaching instead they have adapted different techniques to teach language. Past studies have reported that teachers opted to use audio-visual because students showed less interest towards English language, students view English language as subject to fulfil the examination requirement, students’ displayed reluctance to speak due to their fear to make mistakes in pronunciation and other. Hence, this paper further analyses the need to investigate the issues that are related on the usage of audio-visual aids to the teaching of English language which needs immediate attention.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Introduction Malocclusion is a very prevalent disorder of children. These disorders are frequently the result of deleterious oral habits. These disorders and their etiology are very difficult to explain to the parent, but the advent of audio-visual aids has solved this dilemma for the clinician. They allow the clinician to make the parents understand problems and also to compare with normal individuals. Aim The aim of the present study was to evaluate the awareness of parent toward malocclusion and the efficiency of audio-visual aid in improving parent awareness and compliance toward treatment. Materials and methods A sample size of 100 was estimated which were selected randomly from patients coming to the Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry, IDS Bareilly. An audio-visual aid was prepared describing the oral habits and their associated malocclusions. A self-prepared questionnaire was presented to the parent before and after the audio-visual aid was shown to them. Their awareness and change in attitude was recorded. Results There was statistically significant (p ≤ 0.001) improvement in the knowledge and attitude toward treatment after audio-visual aids were used. Conclusion Audio-visual aid is effective in improving awareness toward malocclusion caused due to oral habits. Abstract:
The present study aimed to investigate the effects of audio-visual aids on teaching listening among Iranian pre-intermediate EFL learners. In order to fulfill the objectives of the study, the researcher selected 40 homogeneous pre-intermediate students and divided them into two equal groups. The two groups were the experimental groups (n=20) and a control groups (n=20). Then a listening comprehension pre-test was administered to assess the participants' listening comprehension at the beginning of the course. After the pre-test, the researcher practiced the treatment on the experimental groups. During the treatment sessions, The EG was taught by using authentic video, while the CG used audio Compact Disc (CD) as the teaching aid most often used by ESL teachers in teaching listening. After the treatment which took 15 sessions, the researcher administered a post-test to find out the effect of audio-visual aids on teaching listening. When the data were collected, Independent and Paired Samples T-tests were run to analyze them. The results showed that the EG students taught by using authentic video achieved higher results in listening than the CG ones taught by audio compact disc (CD). The implications of the study suggest that using audio-visual aids can help EFL learners to develop their listening comprehension.DOI: 10.24071/llt.2019.220209

Abstract:
Research on second-language (L2) speech acquisition suggests that audio-visual aids could be effective in helping learners acquire difficult L2 speech sounds (Li, 2016a). However, most previous studies have been restricted to laboratory settings rather than the classroom environment. The present study, therefore, was designed to fill this knowledge gap by analysing the effectiveness of audio-visual aids, particularly articulatory gestures, in teaching L2 speech sounds in actual classrooms. The participants were students from two classes of non-English majors who had severe difficulties with the differentiation of /θ/–/s/ and /ð/–/z/. ‘Read-aloud’ tasks were employed for pronunciation tests. The baseline data of the students’ pronunciation of the two contrasts was collected with a pre-test, and the intuitive–imitative approach was adopted for teaching. Specifically, the students were exposed to seven audio- or audio-visually recorded poems (one poem per week over the course of seven weeks) containing the target contrasts. The students in Class 1 were taught with the audio-recordings without images of the speaker’s face being displayed; in contrast, students in Class 2 were taught using audio-visual recordings, which allowed them to observe the speakers’ articulatory gestures of /θ/–/s/ and /ð/–/z/. To detect the teaching effect, a post-test was carried out after the teaching programme was completed. A delayed post-test was conducted one month after the post-test. Comparisons with the respective pre-test results indicated that students in Class 2 had a significant improvement in the pronunciation of the target contrasts in the post-test, whereas those in Class 1 did not. In the delayed post-test, neither class showed any significant difference in the pronunciation performance in comparison with the post-test. The findings, therefore, confirmed the effectiveness of exposure to audio-visual aids in teaching L2 pronunciation.
