Abstract:
Abstract This article provides a brief account of the rise of audiobooks, from the early uses of audiobooks to make books available to the visually impaired, to the rise of Audible and the recent surge in audiobooks. It shows how the strong growth of audiobook output and sales since 2011 has been linked to a clear shift in formats: whereas CDs had been the dominant medium for audiobooks between 2003 and 2010, digital downloads became increasingly important from 2011 onwards. By 2017, digital downloads accounted for nearly 90 per cent of audiobook sales.

Abstract:
The development of digital technologies creates the conditions for a new stage in the development and dissemination of audio culture. Radio plays have been replaced by audiobooks, audio podcasts, and audio series. The book market is experiencing an "audio explosion". There is a steady growth of interest in audiobooks, which compete with musical content. The authors of the article turn to the study of the current state of the culture of the "audible word". This article examines the audiobook reading of student readers, who were socialized under the conditions of the large-scale spread of digital technologies. The aim of the research: to consider audioreading in the context of leisure and educational practices of young people. The study is based on theoretical approaches that consider the phenomenon of audio consumption in modern media (V.Y. Bal', M.Y. Gudova, J.P. Melentieva, V. Erlmann, W. Hagen, A. Kassabian, J.F. Lehmann). The study examined students' perceptions of audiobook reading, its place in leisure and educational practices. The authors conducted a sociological study (December 2020) with the participation of 85 students in order to identify the perceptions of audiobook reading. Qualitative methodology of analysis of answers to open-ended questions was used for the study. The design questionnaire included questions on preferred types of reading, use of audiobook reading in educational and leisure practices, reasons for interest in audiobook reading and possibilities of audiobook reading as a type of educational content. The study identified students' preferences in the choice of book format (paper, electronic, audiobooks), students' ideas about the reasons for wide distribution of audiobooks, advantages and limitations of audiobooks, convenient contexts for daily life, practices of using audiobooks in educational and leisure activities. The authors consider the potential of audiobooks in the organization of educational and leisure activities of students.

Abstract:
Nowadays, in the new media environment generated by science and technology such as digital technology, Internet technology, and mobile communication technology, the way people acquire information and knowledge presents diversified characteristics, and people's reading methods also have more choices. Sound, which serves as one of the most vital parts of the reading industry, also has been making progress in its development. And the behavior of listening to audiobooks has been fulfilled in people’s lives. Although the previous related research does have essential contributions to studying the audiobook industry, they just introduce the audiobook market and some of the uses appear in people’s lives. This literature does not address what interests people about audiobooks, and it does not fully address what makes audiobooks appealing. In this research, the authors want to explore the factors that influence audiobooks so that the authors can figure out how can the authors make audiobooks better for the listeners. The research topic is whether the element of “role play” acts on the most influential part in the audiobook industry. An e-questionnaire was designed to collect the data mainly about the users’ preferences on three elements: the cast of the voice actors, the post-production, and the form of the audiobook. And the result shows that most of the young people may care about the form of the audiobook, especially liking the form of performing the stories like drama.

Abstract:
The e-books industry is mature, and audiobooks are becoming increasingly popular. More and more publishers are coming to realize that audiobooks could be a potential revenue driver and intend to release audiobooks. Considering that there is a certain substitutability between e-books and audiobooks, publishers need to decide how to release a book in its audible version and its e-book version into the market. In this paper, we incorporate the discount factor and the consumers’ acceptance level for audiobooks into the consumer utility by dividing consumers into two types, high-value type and low-value type, and construct two different release models: releasing the audiobook and the e-book simultaneously and releasing the audiobook after the e-book. Using an optimization tool, we investigate pricing strategies of a monopolistic publisher under two different release models. By comparing the theoretical results of the two models, we find that when the consumers’ patience exceeds a certain threshold, releasing a book in its audible version after its e-book version is better for the publisher, and the publisher should adopt a skimming (refers to decreasing markups over time) pricing strategy for the e-book in this case. Further, the publisher should set a higher price for the audiobook than the e-book, whether or not they release the audiobook after the e-book. In addition, we conduct a numerical analysis to investigate how the discount factor, the percentage of high-value consumers, and the high-value consumers’ acceptance level for audiobooks affect the consumer surplus and the social welfare. This study offers publishers some managerial insights into the complex issues involving pricing and release strategies.

Abstract:
The article examines the rapid development of the global audiobook market, which is currently the fastest growing sector in the field of book production. It was found that the audiobook market in the United States, which today is considered the largest in the world for the twelve months of 2019 grew by 47% compared to 2018. The growth trend of the audiobook market is stable, growth continues in 2020. The reasons for the growth, which are primarily related to the development of technology, have been studied. Smartphones, tablets and, more recently, artificial intelligence — all this has spurred the development of audiobooks and provided the desired way to get acquainted with the book to those who have vision problems, the elderly. The market for audiobook CDs in 2010 was 58% of sales against 42%. digital shifts. The shift towards the rapid growth of audiobooks began when we switched to digital media instead of using audiobook CDs. In recent years, the situation has changed rapidly because many older people have become better versed in technology, and also because the emergence of new gadgets that can read, attracts a new audience that is getting younger. The average age of listeners has grown from those who are 50 (which was relevant in 2010) to those who are not yet 50. In 2018, Google launched an audiobook store for people aged 45 in different countries in nine different languages. It is emphasized that the audiobook attracts a diverse audience, as it is no longer aimed exclusively at the elderly, but becomes interesting to people of all ages from all walks of life. It has been proven that audiobooks are rapidly gaining share in both the book market and the general media market, but the share of audiobooks in the book market does not come from printed books. 78% of all income from the book trade in the world is accounted for by the printed book. Audiobooks are taking away the frequent market in which e-books dominated a few years ago. According to analysts, by the end of 2023, revenue from the sale of audiobooks will be equal to revenues from e-books.

Abstract:
Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate the factors influencing readers’ choice between audiobooks and physical books. The research focuses on how perceived ease of use and attachment to printed books affect the intention to adopt audiobook services. Theoretical Framework: The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) is a prominent theory in the field of information systems that explains how users adopt new technologies. Method: For this research, the methodology comprises quantitative method, PLS-SEM analysis, and structural model evaluation. Data collection was carried out through online questionnaires. Results and Discussion: The study supports the role of Perceived Ease of Use (PEOU) in increasing Perceived Usefulness (PU) for audiobooks. Attachment to physical books seems to be a complex factor not solely influenced by ease of use or perceived benefits of audiobooks. Research Implications: The study highlights the importance of user-friendly audiobook platforms. Providers should design intuitive interfaces and emphasize ease of use to attract new customers, communicate the practical benefits of audiobooks, such as convenience and utility, consider offering resources or programs that improve technology literacy and comfort, and develop strategies to address attachment by emphasizing how audiobooks can complement, rather than replace, the traditional reading experience. Originality/Value: This study contributes to the literature by highlighting attachment to traditional reading formats as a factor influencing audiobook adoption. Previous TAM studies primarily focused on perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness. This study suggests that emotional attachment to physical books can be a resistance mechanism hindering audiobook adoption.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents a Brazilian perspective on audiobooks. It contextualizes the past and current realities of the format in the country, on the basis of surveys coordinated by national associations connected to the book market and of archival research we have undertaken, and shows some examples of recorded literary works and recent initiatives in audiobook production. The ‘acoustic-editorial project’ idea is proposed as a way to highlight and deepen the materiality and production process of audiobooks, and to understand the editorial elements through which the listening experience is created. Authors from book history, bibliography, communication theory, and audiobook studies influenced this investigation and strengthened our construction of audiobooks as a research object.

Abstract:
Purpose This article explores, identifies and conceptualises everyday audiobook reading practices amongst young adults.Design/methodology/approach Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten Swedish audiobook users aged 18–19. The material was analysed using qualitative content analysis and focused on their audiobook use during an average weekday, as this was the time that they listened the most. The theoretical framework consists of theories on practice, time and everyday routine.Findings Five timespaces emerged when audiobook practices were most prevalent: morning routines, commuting routines, school routines, after school routines and bedtime routines. Within these timespaces, several practices could be identified and conceptualised. Three mobile practices were commute listening, exercise listening and chore listening while more stationary practices were homework listening, schoolwork listening and leisure listening. An unexpected finding was how audiobooks routinely were used to aid respondents’ wellbeing. This wellbeing listening was used to alleviate stress, loneliness and help listeners relax or fall asleep. Furthermore, respondents switch between Music, Audiobooks and Podcasts, which is conceptualised as MAP-switching.Originality/value There is a scarcity of research on audiobook use, and this paper contributes with new knowledge on audiobook reading practices, how audiobooks fit into everyday routine and provides concepts to aid further research on audiobook practices.

Full text
Abstract:
In this degree project we present a way to construct a synchronization system that is able to create a timings file, which is the file the system uses to know how to sync the eBook and audiobook, using speech recognition and estimation algorithms. This file is then used by the system to let the user select a sentence and have the audiobook start reading from that sentence, or vice versa. This system can create these files with a mean offset from a manu-ally timed file which is within our expectations for the system. We use estimation algorithms to fill in the blanks where the speech recognition falls short. Speech recognition accuracy is typically between 40-60%, sometimes dipping lower, so there are blanks to fill in. Using basic algebraic principles of calculating velocity we can ex-trapolate the speed of a reader, using the duration of the audiobook as the time and the amount of characters written as the distance. For increased accuracy we derive this value on a per-chapter basis. Using this method we are able to create accurate files, which the user can use to freely sync any location in the book. Our system is designed to work for any book in the world that does not have an audiobook which cuts off between sentences in the audio files. We manually create timings files for four different books with widely varying publishing dates, author styles, reader style and gender to create as wide and representative a testing pool as possible for the project

Sheinberg, David. "Audiobooks as artworks : a framework for analysis & appreciation." Thesis, Goldsmiths College (University of London), 2017. http://research.gold.ac.uk/22341/.

Full text
Abstract:
Audiobooks, although largely unexamined, should be perceived as the aural artefacts of a distinct artistic genre. It, in turn, should be identified as part of an interdisciplinary aesthetic category—one which has not been defined hitherto. To classify audiobooks as artworks, I turn to the New Institutional Theory of Art (NITA), which currently provides the most effective explanation available to determining not only what makes something into an artwork, but also whether or not a particular artwork can be deemed beautiful (i.e. aesthetically good). In utilizing NITA, instituting a context—a framework governing the artistic praxis of recording written texts and delivering them to a designated audience—I consequently create a unique aesthetic category. As an artistic institution in its own right, it determines the criteria for identifying aural performances as works of art, and, in effect, establishes audiobooks among all forms of aural performance. In rendering aesthetic evaluation and appreciation crucial aspects to defining art, the implied notion of internal logic—while not explicitly expressed—prevails as a core concept, inherent to a comprehensive understanding of NITA. In articulating its meaning, I suggest its association with the idea of informed intuition, thereby introducing them both as pivotal in illuminating the contribution of my expanded application of NITA. Effectively, in recognizing that to define art necessitates more than mere classification, one is able to employ an institutional analysis on different kinds of artistic case studies. By surveying three major case studies—all manifesting the first-person narrative as a fundamental aesthetic property of audiobooks—the concrete analysis of audiobooks as artworks proves essential to my methodology. Ultimately, by ascertaining their aesthetic quality, I propose to identify the manner in which the craft of casting aural performances necessarily, albeit unconsciously, consolidates aesthetic evaluation, and, effectively, illustrates how it pragmatically works in action.

Abstract:
This study explored the question of whether using recorded texts in conjunction with written texts might improve gifted students’ reading comprehension. Participants were thirteen gifted readers from two elementary schools, in grades 1 to 5. Participants alternated reading texts at their reading level with, and without, the aid of audio recordings. Immediately following the reading of the text, participants took a short comprehension test. Participants completed pre- and post- treatment surveys to determine to measure their attitudes towards listening versus reading and how they may have changed during the study. Five participants scored higher using the Read / Listen treatment; four did equally well using either treatment; and four scored better on the Read Only treatment. Participants who scored better on the Read / Listen treatment scored at least a full letter grade higher than with the Read Only treatment.

Abstract:
This study aims to investigate how the choice of media form, i.e. printed format, audiobook or reading and audio combined, affect the ability of ESL students to achieve comprehension, and how different ways of asking questions can affect their comprehension ability. Lastly, the study aims to investigate the relationship between comprehension and students’ proficiency levels in their L2. To answer this question, 155 students were recruited and divided into three groups and assigned one type of media form. The quantitative data was collected through an online comprehension test and analysed. The results showed a significant difference between the media forms and revealed that printed reading was superior. However, a printed and audio combination was the most time efficient way for students to achieve comprehension, which indicates that the inclusion of audio does not impede student learning. Previous research in the same field shows that the results are inconclusive, but shares one common conclusion, that students enjoy the audio format. As a result, the educational system should make every effort to media choices for students to choose their preferred media, and more research in the field needs to be done, as students enjoyment leads to increased learning.

Abstract:
The streaming of audiobooks is a new and fast-growing phenomenon amongst Swedish consumers. There exists a lack of knowledge on this topic as it is previously unexplored within academia. As the audiobook streaming services are growing it is important for providers and competitors to understand the key factors determining usage intention from an end-user’s perspective. This thesis therefore examines what factors influence end-user’s adoption of audiobook streaming-services, the examination extends both for consumers intention to begin using as well as continue using the service. Factors related to the end-user’s usage intention were explored and identified in a Swedish context. A theoretical model consisting of eight hypotheses was constructed to examine the relationships between five variables. The model is based on previous literature of technology adoption and in particular the technology acceptance model (TAM). Additional theory was gathered on previous research on similar technologies such consumers adoption of E-books and E-readers. To achieve the research purpose of the thesis, a quantitative method was used and data was gathered through an online questionnaire with 935 (769 valid) responses. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used with RStudio to test the collected data on our theoretical model. The results showcased that our model was successful in explaining key factors influencing usage intention. The findings indicate that perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use influence usage intention positively, while end-user’s attachment to paper books and reading impact usage intention negatively. Further results and the implications of these results are discussed.

Abstract:
Perhaps nothing explains the concept of interactive stories better than The road not taken by Robert Frost. His poem tells the story of a man following a road through the woods, when he comes to a fork in the road. Which way should he go? And how will this choice affect the rest of his life? In an interactive story, the author expands their story along multiple branches, and invites the reader to choose for themselves which path to take. They can also restart the story to go back and see what would lie down that other road. When an interactive story is played on a smartphone, there are additional ways of making those choices besides simply using vocal input. For example, going left or right at a fork in the road could be done by walking left or right, so that the phone's positioning service detects a change in position. A long journey could require the user to wait until the next day to find out what happens.  Based on an existing system for creating and playing interactive stories, we added new interaction possibilities for the listener and made the creation of stories easier by improving the user interface and adding features.
Kanske förklarar ingenting begreppet interaktiva berättelser bättre än The road not taken av Robert Frost.

Abstract:
Independet silent reading - Out of old habit or a lesson with purpose?  The aim of this study was to examine whether teachers use the method of independent silent reading purposefully or if they do it out of old habit. The research focuses on what purpose the teachers have and which working methods they use when working with silent reading. I investigated who it is that chooses the books to be read and what factors are determining this choise. Finally, I wanted to find out how the silent reading time is used by the pupils and the teachers. In order to investigate this, observations were made in classes during silent reading time and semistructured interviews were conducted with teachers and students. The results show that most teachers have a clear purpose with silent reading and that they work with different reading strategies to teach the children to become independent silent readers. However, an important part of succeeding in silent reading is that it happens on a regular basis, preferably every day.     Finally, I would like to thank my supervisor Yvonne Knospe, university lecturer at the Department of Language Studies, Umeå University for all the feedback and guidence during the work process. Abstract:
This study reveals attitudes among pupils in upper secondary school about the usage of audiobooks and its connection with motivation about reading fiction. The data material is gathered through poll surveys that takes place in an upper secondary school in the Västra Götaland county. The poll survey participants were informed about that the survey was anonymous and were accompanied by a teacher while doing it. In the study the concept of motivation, and audiobooks are discussed. Further more the study discusses the Swedish tradition of listening to fiction read aloud. This has to do with the usage of audiobooks as it’s an extension of that, since it has to do with a recorded reading of a book. The result reveals patterns pointing out positive attitudes among the pupils. This is due to the majority of answers that points to a desire of increased usage of audiobooks in school. The connection of audio books and motivation is therefore revealed in the results as the majority of pupils answer that they wish for an increased usage of audiobooks together with physical books. This could be interpreted as that the usage of audiobooks could work as an incentive for pupils to read fiction.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate how a selected group of educators work with and experience the use of audiobooks and read-alouds at preschool. The study is focused on how educators reflect about and work with audiobooks and read-alouds and whether there has been any change in the use of audiobooks at preschool, with the increasing popularity of audiobooks in society. The study rests on interviews conducted with a total of four educators from two preschools. The results show that the educators believe that read-alouds are an important part of children's language development, while audiobooks are seen as a complement to the read-alouds. The result also shows that audiobooks are rarely or never used in the preschool activities while read-alouds are taking into practice at least once a day, often more.

Abstract:
Abstract The development of digital media technologies like the MP3 file and the smartphone has changed the status of the audiobook from being a by-product of the printed book to being a mass medium in its own right. This chapter takes a context and user perspective on audiobooks and asks the fundamental question: to what extent can one say that one ‘reads’ an audiobook? Based on the Danish author Helle Helle’s novel Ned til hundene (Down to the Dogs, 2008), the authors discuss how the audiobook experience as a whole can be analysed regarding ‘technological framing’, ‘reading situations’ and ‘the performing voice’. They also investigate audiobook reading in relation to the experience of time and depth.
