Abstract:

Every year, many thousands of people worldwide lose the ability to speak due to receiving a laryngectomy, typically for treatment of cancer. At some point in their recovery, most will use an electrolarynx to recover their ability to speak. Typical electrolarynxes utilize a piston to strike a disc pressed to the patient's neck which delivers a pressure wave into the soft tissue. This pressure wave mechanically couples with the vocal tract and generates the fundamental frequency necessary for creating vowels without which speech is not possible.

Commonly available electrolarynxes suffer from poor frequency control due to the nonlinear character of their impulse driver. They also create a great deal of "self-noise" which is distracting to listeners and makes using voice communication systems difficult.

We propose a novel electrolarynx implementation which utilizes two interfering ultrasonic waves to generate a fundamental frequency in the vocal tract required for speech restoration. The device is light weight, compact, inexpensive, and offers excellent control of all aspects of the output waveform. In addition, as the primary waveforms are above human hearing, there is little "self-noise" that can be heard by listeners and most communications devices filter such noise as part of their standard digitization process.

This device offers the potential to greatly improve the lives of those who have lost their voices and must rely on technology to allow them to communicate in the most efficient manner.

Šiuolaikiniame pasaulyje bei mene akcentuojamas kokybiškas rezultatas, gaunamas per trumpą laiko tarpą. Audimas rankomis (pvz., rankinėmis staklėmis, ant vertikalaus rėmo) – imlus laikui procesas, vis labiau tolstantis nuo kasdienės šiuolaikinių tekstilės menininkų praktikos. Nors tekstas yra populiari meno forma, austą tekstą galima sutikti retai. Šis meninis tyrimas analizuoja audimo ir teksto sinkretiškumą. Bandoma atsakyti į klausimus: kokias reikšmes šioje sąjungoje galima įžvelgti, kokia prasmė jai gali būti suteikiama. Austas tekstas, kaip tyrimo objektas, virto pagalba kalbėti apie tekstilės menininko tapatybę šiuolaikiniame mene. Contemporary world and art emphasise a high-quality result produced within a short period of time. Manual weaving (e.g. by handloom machine or on a vertical loom) is a time-consuming process which is broadly becoming an obsolete practice amongst contemporary textile artists. Although text is a popular form of art, woven text is very rare. This study intends to analyse the syncretic association between weaving and text. The following questions are raised: what are the meanings of this association and what purpose can be derived from it. Woven text, as the study object, has become an assisting instrument in the discussion of a textile artist in contemporary art. A textile artist, who decides to create art by means of weaving, finds himself standing at the crossroads of tradition and contemporary environment. The following study sources were used: interviews with Lithuanian woven text creators, as well as literature, art journalism, articles in periodic publications, and other data which allow finding new meanings of woven text. The objective of the study is to assemble the possible meanings which define the relationship between weaving and text. Meanings found in the study were the following: opposition; time, transience, longevity; escape, isolation, salvation, halt; meditation, empathy; history, tradition; tactility/touch; durability, strength, genuineness; communication, intimacy, reminiscence; sacredness, religion; politics, economics; suffering, complexity, hard work... Abstract:

Oliver, Morris Bernard. "Audible pedestrian signals: a feasibility study." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/44130.

Full text
Abstract:
This report represents a concentrated effort that determines the feasibility of audible pedestrian signals. These signals are devices which give auditory cues to help the visually impaired cross safely at difficult intersections. Surveys were sent out to over 100 organizations, audible signal manufacturers, and cities who have knowledge of the devices, and responses were analyzed. The devices were found to be feasible but only at certain complex and confusing intersections. Twelve criteria for the installation of the devices were developed as were twelve criteria for the operation of the devices. Buzzers, constant tones, bird calls, and voice signals were examined by obtaining information from traffic engineers who had experience with each sound. It was determined that intermittent tones were the most effective for human localization. For the most widely used devices, cost data were developed for the products, installation, and maintenance. A partial listing of the U.S. and foreign cities which have the devices was compiled along with a partial listing of audible signal manufacturers. The problems the visually impaired face as well as their suggested solutions are listed. Topics for further study include the use of hand-held devices which activate sound signals at intersections and the development of tone schemes for 4-leg and multi-leg intersections which are not north south and east-west. An additional topic for future study is the development of tone schemes for traffic circles.

Abstract:
In this thesis I aim to uncover the nature, quality and implications of audience engagement with popular music in everyday life. Specifically, I look at two post-war generations in modern Japan and analyse their listening practices and interpretations of music encounters. To investigate this, a mixed-method approach is used based on focus group and individual interviews, questionnaires, participant observation and expert interviews with industry representatives – 100 study participants overall. Emerging patterns and themes are identified through qualitative thematic analysis. In two case studies – of idol groups and vocaloid music - I focus on how audiences, especially fans, and producers interact, with a close bond emerging over a process of cultural co-evolution of production and reception. Then, I position this map of engagements within the experiences of two Japanese cohorts, “the lost” and “the relaxed”. I argue that their generational experiences and localities guide the frames through which they interpret music. I argue that listening to music is a complex social practice whose significance has been undervalued in audience research. Audiences make music choices and engage with musical texts according to specific modes and routines which should be analysed together. Following the legacy of literary and television audience studies, I propose an account of music listening in terms of a spectrum of audience engagements linked to texts, contexts, performances and authorship. The concepts of proximity (cultural proximity and the proximity between performers and audiences) inform the analysis of the circuit of culture, offering new insight into modes of engagement and production processes. Japan, home of the Walkman and karaoke, emerges from the analysis as not only the land of technological innovations in music, but also as a culture with wider implications for media and audience research.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines the commercially released nature records that were produced by naturalists, scientists, recording engineers, teachers, musicians, and hobbyists from the 1890s through the 1970s. Though some of the general concepts about natural sound have remained remarkably consistent over time, their specific definitions and implementations are marked by moments of contestation and change. Early recorded natural sound practices were often both musical and narrative, relying on human intermediaries to set the scene and explain the sounds. Later developments in microphones and recorders allowed humans greater access to natural sounds, but they also increased the levels of detachment between those sounds and their sources, resulting in nature sounds being understood, measured, and visualized in abstract and mathematical ways. Concurrent with these technological developments was a cultural shift away from nature sounds as a way to understand large-scale environmental and scientific issues, shared experiences, and actual physical spaces, toward the use of nature sounds to facilitate a personal and psychological relationship with a generalized idea of "the natural world." These issues were not simply the province of a small group of specialists, or mere background noise to larger cultural issues. Debates about natural sounds were often debates about "nature" itself, touching on fundamental questions of race, class, gender, science, technology, and environmental politics in American culture.

McCardle, John Richard. "The application of artificial neural networks to interpret acoustic emissions from submerged arc welding." Thesis, Brunel University, 1997. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/5463.

Full text
Abstract:
Automated fusion welding processes play a fundamental role in modern manufacturing industries. The proliferation of joint geometries together with the large permutation of associated process variable configurations has given rise to research into complex system modelling and control strategies. Many of these techniques have involved monitoring of not only the electrical characteristics of the process but visual and acoustic information. Acoustic information derived from certain welding processes is well documented as it is an established fact that skilled manual welders utilise such information as an aid to creating an optimum weld. The experimental investigation presented in this thesis is dedicated to the feasibility of monitoring airborne acoustic emissions of Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) for diagnostic and real time control purposes. The experimental method adopted for this research takes a cybernetic approach to data processing and interpretation in an attempt to replicate the robustness of human biological functions. A custom designed audio hardware system was used to analyse signals obtained from bead on mild steel plate fusion welds. Time and frequency domains were used in an attempt to establish salient characteristics or identify the signatures associated with changes of the process variables. The featured parameters were voltage / current and weld travel speed, due to their ease of validation. However, consideration has also been given to weld defect prediction due to process instabilities. As the data proved to be highly correlated and erratic when subjected to off line statistical analysis, extensive investigation was given to the application of artificial neural networks to signal processing and real time control scenarios. As a consequence, a dedicated neural based software system was developed, utilising supervised and unsupervised neural techniques to monitor the process. The research was aimed at proving the feasibility of monitoring the electrical process parameters and stability of the welding process in real time. It was shown to be possible, by the exploitation of artificial neural networks, to generate a number of monitoring parameters indicative of the welding process state. The limitations of the present neural method and proposed developments are discussed, together with an overview of applied neural network technology and its impact on artificial intelligence and robotic control. Further developments are considered together with recommendations for future areas of research.

Middleton, Christopher B. "Caring, control and compliance : nursing's struggle to be audible." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2013. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/13520/.

Full text
Abstract:
There are many situations in healthcare delivery in the UK where nurses are the dominant workforce or have expert practitioners working directly with clients, yet rarely, apparently, are they involved in national healthcare policy development nor do they have significant input into how they are expected to practise. Given the large number of nurses compared to other healthcare professions and the long history of the profession it is not immediately clear why this should be the case. However the impression is that this situation is somehow embedded in our culture and history. One clue here is the widely held perception that nursing is women’s work which in turn reveals an apparent parallel between the historical treatment of women in society and the status of nursing. The lack of value ascribed to the skills of the woman nurse can, I believe, be found in our Christian heritage In this work I have explored this phenomenon by examining the development of nursing through history to try and identify and expose the barriers to nursing being able to lead in public healthcare policy determination. I have used an historiographical approach to review the literature using, where possible, contemporaneous accounts. Through this approach I have highlighted the historical, impact of Christianity on the status and value of women in society overlaid with the struggle nursing has had with the enduring legend of Florence Nightingale. This exposure of nursing’s history and the roots of the embedded attitudes of and towards nurses offers the expectation of its use by nurse educators to better prepare future practitioners to take on the challenge of influencing national healthcare policy in Britain.

Abstract:
Sound localisation is a complex perceptual process that involves the integration of information derived from multiple audible cues. Human sound localisation is mediated by these audible cues. The primary audible cues are the interaural time difference (ITD), phase difference (IPD) and intensity difference (IID) that result from diffraction of sound waves around the head and pinnae. The ITD and the IID have received much attention in the literature as they are considered to be the most important binaural cues. These cues result from a neural comparison between the signals at both ears. Although these cues are signal-dependent, they have not been investigated using day-to-day life signals due to the experimentation complexity. Many research studies employed either single frequency or unnatural signals to draw conclusions. Further, the IPD could not be distinguished from the ITD for multiple frequency signals. This thesis presents new experimental techniques which are developed to investigate the role of primary audible cues in sound localisation. These techniques independently control and investigate the cues with multiple frequency signals. Listening experiments are initially completed with single cues which are followed by experiments with cues in conflict. The stimuli are chosen to include representative day-to-day life signals. Two audible cues at a time are used simultaneously in conflict so that their relative importance can be determined. Experimental techniques included a mathematical approach to manipulate the phase of all the component frequencies in a multiple frequency signal, whilst leaving the amplitude structure unchanged. This approach is adopted to distinguish the IPD from an equivalent ITD for multiple frequency signals. It is therefore possible to investigate the IPD independently with multiple frequency signals. The experimental results indicate that the effect of the IPD can be compensated for by an appropriate opposing ITD. In general, localisations become centrally diffuse when either the ITD or the IPD is placed in conflict with the IID. A localisation model is developed to provide predictions for the effect of one cue against an alternative cue, similar to the experiments. The results from the model are in agreement with the experiments. It is not evident whether the ITD or the IPD is more effective. The new techniques and the localisation model provide the opportunity to investigate the primary audible cues with representative day-to-day life signals. It has become possible to independently assess these cues and to draw conclusions based on their role in sound localisation.

Herron, David. "Vibration of railway bridges in the audible frequency range." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2009. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/151141/.

Full text
Abstract:
The noise level associated with a train travelling on a bridge is normally greater than that for a train travelling on plain track. It is sometimes the bridge noise that causes the highest levels of disturbance to people in the vicinity or triggers action under regulations such as the Environmental Noise Directive. Consequently, there is a need to study means of predicting noise levels from proposed bridges, noise control measures for existing structures and principles of low-noise bridge design. This thesis describes a programme of work in which an existing calculation model for bridge noise and vibration has been tested and alternative calculation methods have been developed where required. The existing model is based on analytical models for wheel-rail interaction and the calculation of the power input to the bridge. The response of the various component parts of the bridge for this power input is found using a simplified SEA scheme. In this work, the existing model has been tested against measurements made on railway bridges and the results of an advanced method of structural analysis, the Waveguide Finite Element (WFE) method. This method is well-suited to modelling some important types of railway bridge. Specifically, it allows a numerical modelling approach to be used up to higher frequency than conventional Finite Element methods. It has been found to offer some significant advantages over the existing bridge noise model, particularly for concrete-steel composite bridges and concrete box-section viaducts. The track support structure has an important influence on bridge noise and vibration, through its role in the transmission of vibration from the rail to the bridge. Laboratory measurements have been made in this work to characterise the vibration transmission properties of two important types of track support structure on bridges; ballasted track and two-stage resilient baseplate track. Improved methods of modelling the dynamic behaviour of these track forms have been developed from the measurements, which can be used in calculation models for both bridge noise and also for rolling noise.

The study investigates the meaning of deaf competence (knowledge of deaf, sign language and their culture) when deaf people encounter the justice system. The intention is to outline the consequences of the lack of deaf competence. I´ve chosen a qualitative and explorative research approach in order to reach the answers of the study, to examine the respondents’ perception and experience in the encounter with the justice system. Qualitative interviewstudy with deaf people who´s first language is sign language and who´s been in need of support from the society and experienced the lack of deaf competence. Eight people were interviewed and then an analysis was made to interpreted and understand deaf people who´s experienced the lack of deaf competence. As tools during analysis I use everyday racism and audism theoretical smarting points. The conclusion I´ve reached from the respondents is that the treatment they’ve received from the justice system actually isn´t individual actions, due to these individual actions being repeated by various individual people. The lack of deaf competence as a result of the consequences are often become serious and even devastating for some of the respondents.

The thesis builds on a summary of theoretical sources of the relevant area, followed by a survey conducted by the author. The survey maps current state of data analytics usage in both internal and external audit in the Czech Republic. The added value of this thesis is, apart from the identification of audit areas in which it is beneficial to use data analytics, the design of an analytical procedure and its application. Another benefit is the survey revealing current state of the art and the insights of interviewed auditors, pointing to both benefits and problems of data analytics application to the performance of the audit profession.

The object of the study. Short impulse acoustic signals in the frequency range from 500 to 4000 Hz and intensity from 30 to 85 dB. The aim of the study. To estimate and assess the quality of the speech and acoustic signals from the perspective of various background noises of different frequency spectra. The tasks of the study: 1. To evaluate the effects of noise of various intensity on identification of short impulse signals and speech intelligibility in noise; 2. To analyse the audibility of signals in the frequency range of verbal communication (500–4000 Hz) in noise of various intensity and frequency content and to determine the characteristics of signals to be identified in noise; 3. To determine the influence of signals’ duration to the quality of its qualitative subjective identification; 4. To assess the masking effects of the background noise on speech and other informative signals under the combinations if different intensity. Practical value. The data obtained and method developed can be used for the assessment of the acoustic signals in noise. The method is also applicable to the description of background noise from the perspective of verbal communication. Such methodology and results can be adopted for the quality prognostication of audible information and its loss in various background noises of different spectral pattern.
Temos aktualumas. Triukšmo poveikis darbo aplinkoje dažnai siejamas su dirbančiųjų produktyvumo mažėjimu, o triukšmingoje aplinkoje neišgirsti arba neadekvačiai išgirsti akustiniai signalai dažnai būna mašinų trikčių ar traumų darbe pasekmė. Šie pavyzdžiai aiškiai rodo būtinybę spręsti problemas, susietas su girdimosios informacijos sklaida ir kokybe triukšmingoje aplinkoje. Įspėjamųjų ar pavojaus signalų darbo aplinkoje naudojimas standartizuotas ir dažniausiai sprendžiamas energiniu požiūriu, t. y. teikiant ženkliai didesnio intensyvumo akustinius signalus. Šių signalų girdimumas vidutinio intensyvumo triukšmingoje aplinkoje keblumų nesukelia, tačiau realiomis sąlygomis tokios aplinkybės retai pasitaikančios. Daugelyje mokslinių darbų, nagrinėjant garsinės informacijos kokybės klausimus, keliamos tik visiško arba pakankamo suprantamumo problemos, tačiau praktikoje svarbus dalinis šių signalų suvokimas (egzistavimo fakto nustatymas), kuris tyrinėtas menkai. Šiame darbe tiriami ir nagrinėjami reiškiniai, turintys įtakos akustinių garsų girdimumui triukšmingoje aplinkoje bei girdimumą sąlygojančios aplinkybės o taip pat siūlomi sprendimai garsinės informacijos kokybės sistemoje „žmogus – mašina – aplinka“ patikimumo didinimui. Darbo tikslas – triukšmo šaltinių sukuriamą triukšmo foną akustinėje erdvėje ištirti trumpalaikių informacinių akustinių garsų suvokimo požiūriu ir įvertinti triukšmingos aplinkos įtaką naudingų akustinių signalų identifikavimo kokybei. Building upon recent innovations in the study of auditory culture, Sounds Modern presents a history of ideas produced in reaction to the twentieth-century SoundScape. The audible vibrations of new technologies, mechanised warfare and mass culture set in motion a perceptual revolution either side of the Great War in which sound took centre-stage. Hosting and inspiring this revolution, London and Paris, the case-studies upon which the thesis is based, drew in a generation of sound-sensitive thinkers who were keen to explore the aural dimensions of urban experience.

Roets, Hendrik Adriaan. "Effect of altitude on audible noise generated by AC conductor corona." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/71810.

Abstract:
Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Power utilities are expected to keep the cost of electricity as low as possible. They are also expected to be environmentally friendly and, amongst other things, not to produce unacceptable audible noise. When the electric field on a conductor is high enough corona is produced and this is accompanied by audible noise. Air pressure, which is directly related to altitude, has an effect on the voltage at which corona will start. It is more difficult to ionise the air at sea level (high air pressure) than at high altitude (low air pressure). Altitude does not only affect the corona inception voltage, but also the intensity of the audible noise. A thorough scan of literature revealed that there is very little evidence of prior research work on the effect of air density on corona under fair weather (dry) conditions. In South Africa, transmission lines are built at altitudes higher than 1800 m above sea level. The cost of a 400 kV line is in the region of R2M per km. It is important to predict the noise levels under a proposed line accurately, before it is energised. This research indicated that the altitude correction for conductor corona audible noise, under dry conditions, might be steeper than the general accepted correction of 1 dB/300m. This correction, however, appears to be valid for heavy rain conditions. Under heavy rain conditions the corona is mainly determined by the water droplets, whereas under dry conditions the condition of the conductor plays the biggest role. The air density therefore has a bigger effect on the corona performance under dry conditions. The implication of a steeper altitude correction for dry conditions is that too low noise levels will be predicted for a higher altitude, which could lead to complaints. On the other hand, predictions for lower altitudes will be too conservative.

A parametric array exploits the nonlinearity of the propagation medium to emit or detect acoustic waves in a spatially versatile manner, permitting concise, narrow directivity patterns otherwise possible only with physically very large transducer geometries. This thesis explores the use of the parametric array as an audible sound source, permitting audible sound to be generated with very high directivity compared to traditional loudspeakers of comparable size. The thesis begins with a review of basic underlying mathematics and relevant approximate solutions of nonlinear acoustic systems. Then, these solutions are used to construct suitable methods of ultrasonic synthesis for low-distortion audio reproduction. Geometrical modelling methods for predicting the acoustic distribution are presented and evaluated, and practical applications are explored experimentally. Issues of risk associated with ultrasonic exposure are presented, and the feasibility of a phased-array system for beam control is explored.

Abstract:
An annoying tonal noise is produced by modern electrical trains duringacceleration and deceleration. This noise is caused by electromagneticforces generating structural vibrations, especially from the traction motors. The electromagnetic noise is dominant at low train speeds and affectsboth the passengers on the train and on platforms, as well as peopleliving near the track. The focus on this issue has increased the last years, both regarding legislation, contractual requirements and also because ofexpectations from citizens and travelers. To be able to design low noiseelectric drive systems, a thorough understanding of the cause and thepossibility to predict the electromagnetic noise is needed. This thesisdescribes the modelling and simulation of an complete multi-physicsreal-time environment for prediction and analysis of the electromagneticnoise. The simulation results are validated against measurements of thestructural vibration and acoustic response of a real traction motor fed bya power converter running in the entire operational range.

Nadeau, Luc. "Analysis of influence of cost on strategic choice of auditee/auditor." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/20054.

Full text
Abstract:
The audit of financial statements is set out as a two person game to illustrate the influence of damages imposed by society on the strategic choice of both auditee and auditor. It is assumed: (1) that society can influence the damages regime for the auditee and the auditor; (2) that society might be prepared to restrict damages if the auditor can demonstrate due diligence; (3) that the auditee can vary his level of care as regards the accounting process; (4) that the auditor controls his choice of qualitative and quantitative audit tests and the form of audit report; and (5) that there is uncertainty about material error. There are costs and damages involved. The expected cost is the direct cost of preparing and carrying out the audit of the financial statements plus possible damages incurred by both auditee and auditor whenever the quality of the financial statements and audit are challenged. The highest damages are for the issue of a non-qualified audit report on materially inaccurate financial statements, and the primary focus of the dissertation is to demonstrate how these particular damages influence the strategy of the auditee and the auditor. Two types of game are considered. The first illustration is of a game in which the auditee and the auditor cooperate to find the combined strategy that minimizes the total expected cost. The second illustration is of a game in which the auditee and the auditor do not cooperate. In this case, the joint strategies are found by using the concept of Nash equilibrium. These illustrations demonstrate that: (1) for both cooperative and non-cooperative games, the level of damages determines the auditee and the auditor strategies; (2) if society wishes to give an inducement in the form of restricting damages in order to encourage maximum effort, the size of the required inducement is less for a cooperative than for a non-cooperative game; and (3) there are some levels of inducement which encourage maximum effort irrespective of whether the auditee and the auditor cooperate.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine if preschool children, specifically three- and four-year olds, were able to demonstrate recognition of chord changes and identify implied tonic-dominant chord changes as a result of age-appropriate instruction focusing on harmony. Sixteen preschool children (7, three-year-olds; 9, four-year-olds) were given 10, 15-minute lessons that consisted of activities designed to enhance their awareness of harmony. Following instruction, students were given a test that measured their ability to recognize chord changes with regular and irregular harmonic rhythm. Furthermore, subjects were asked to demonstrate audiation of the implied harmony in three unaccompanied melodies by performing chord changes on an electronic keyboard. Results indicated that preschool children (94%) could recognize tonic-dominant chord changes, especially when they occurred in a regular harmonic rhythm. A majority of students (69%) also showed mastery when chords were played in an irregular harmonic rhythm. Students were unable to demonstrate mastery in any of the audiation tasks. Following the 10-week treatment, eight of the original subjects continued for an additional 10 sessions. Instructional and testing procedures remained the same. The scores from the 10- and 20-week tests were compared using a repeated-measures ANOVA. Students showed significant improvement in their ability to recognize chord changes that were played in an irregular harmonic rhythm. A moderate correlation was found to exist between age and this same task.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis uses sounding objects to explore interactions and affinities between the audible and the material. Throughout, the emphasis is on first hand, practical engagement with resonating bodies. Antiquated acoustic instruments are re-examined, generating personal conjectures and creative explorations. The author submits herself to “therapy” with the sound of the glass harmonica, inspired by controversial physician Franz Anton Mesmer (1734-1815). Helmholtz resonators (circa 1863) are re-made and given new hearings. The proposition that sound can provoke predictable responses from both inanimate and sentient bodies is considered through these encounters. Particular attention is given to interferences, “spillings and minglings” (Connor, 2001) between the senses, and the dynamic between the senses and the imagination. Seven key artworks featuring resonating bodies are employed as case studies. These include Lenses (2008), Carillon (2008-9) and Listening Glasses (2009). The case studies are used to approach contested notions of voice, presence, absence, authorial intention, interactivity, audience participation, and other terms implicated in contemporary debates regarding the use of sound in art. The focus on resonance, in the sense of re-sounding, is carried through into the dissemination of art installations, performances and critical reflection by the author. Works are developed, then re-thought and re- formulated in relation to specific art, music and academic contexts in the UK and mainland Europe. Installations become performances and vice versa. Exhibitions, papers and presentations are regarded not as “receptacle[s] of the artist’s vision” (Bourriaud 2002) marking the end point of the creative process, but rather as opportunities to mobilise and test ideas through new frames of reference. Most significantly, the author uses this thesis to consolidate an art practice, and an orientation towards the world that is grounded in reflexivity and the impulse to remain attentive to the detail of her own sensory experiences.

Abstract:
Atmospheres, events, feelings, every sensation has its own music. And the human being has been highly educated to feel the glamour of them through the hearing sense. We know how a terrifying situation sounds like; what would be the musical accompaniment for a warzone scenario or what is the perfect piece for getting into a state of relaxation. Thanks to music design it has been possible to immerse the spectator into a deeper sensorial perception experience. Users close their eyes, and feel. What if we close our ears, and feel? This thesis aims to transport the qualities of sound that produces feelings into people, to visual values communicated by an approach to architectural lighting design into architectural spaces. A music example is chosen according to the intended emotion to be transposed. It is analysed, evaluated and related to a series of theoretical fundamentals based on visual psychology, human experience, multisensorial connections and lighting design. Laws of correlation are stablished and applied to a case study which ends as a theoretical concept design of an architectural lighting design installation. Closing the document, a statement of guidelines for the conversion of subjective emotional qualities perceived from musical examples is stablished and discussed the use of it in architecture.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper has been to highlight how discourses on disability are portrayed in two different applications for additional funding for students with special educational needs (SEN) of hearing impairment, and two regarding neuropsychiatry. The paper studies a total of 328 applications for additional funding and chosen four of these for a further in depth analysis. The aim of the paper has been to highlight and pinpoint how the four different applications, describes different discourses and perspectives on disability from a perspective of ableism and audism. This ergo in turn creates different fields of transferred discourses from each individual application. The paper has also analyzed what discourses results in granted additional funding from the two municipalities. The paper has used an applied method of Sara Ahmed’s perspective on discourse analysis (2012) and Sara Ahmed’s Queer phenomenology (2006) as a theoretical framework. The purpose of this has been to distinguish use of governmentality and documentality, in order to highlight discourses on ableism and audism. The conclusions drawn from this paper are that the categorical perspective dominates applications regarding neuropsychiatry while the compensatory perspective dominates applications regarding hearing impairment. This in turn points to that the Swedish state should take control of assessing applications for SEN needs from the municipalities. This would possibly lead to increased equivalence and allocation of resources regarding decisions on additional funding for SEN needs. The results show that ableism, audism, governmentality and documentality are predominant discourses in the written applications for additional funding, which works to construct and whole fully connect the SEN need to being the identity of the student.

Abstract:
The goal of this Master’s thesis is to explore the approach and general attitude of public libraries regarding Sign Language Literature. There is a need to study and advance how the deaf can find ways to read in their own language, as it is as important to them to be able to read in their language, as it is to the next hearing person. The purpose is to define and explain the full capacity of the problem. In the process of research, by investigating how library staff approaches and deal with deaf patrons, the nature of the patron-staff relationship is revealed. A closer look at the collections of Sign Language Literature that are found in libraries today, further expose how the deaf patrons’ fundamental need for literature in their own language has been marginalized. In collecting data, the method used was qualitative descriptive alignment. Based on fourteen interviews in total, eight public libraries, three state deaf school libraries and three library advisors were included in the research process. Moreover were previous research and the method of subjective interpretation of law used. As this thesis seeks to put forth, results show that library staff has little or no knowledge of deaf people and their needs. Although the respondents maintain a positive attitude toward Sign Language Literature when asked, they lack specific training in how to successfully accommodate deaf patrons; thus, libraries and their staff remain somewhat ignorant in their approach, failing to take their deaf patrons as seriously as the hearing population.

Abstract:
Today Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB hasn’t got any method to determine how many warning alarms they need on their machines and how they should be mounted to use their full potential. At the moment a travel alarm is usually placed in the front of the machine and a reverse alarm in the back. Then a measurement of the sound pressure level around the machine is performed to see if it is enough to pass the limit according to different ISO-standards. Otherwise they have to mount some extra alarms and then do the measurements again until the standards are fulfilled. The aim of this thesis work is to develop a method for determine how many alarms Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB need on the machines, and also how they should be mounted to fulfil the different criteria according to ISO-standards in the early phase of construction. From the different divisions within Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB (LHD, SDE and TME) arrived four different alarms, which are used on their machines. Sound pressure level measurements were conducted on these, in the anechoic chamber at audiological research centre at the university hospital in Örebro. In the LMS Test.Lab software a measurement sphere was built around the horns and based on the data obtained at the anechoic chamber sound directivity plots were made. Together with earlier machine measurement data from Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB, an Excel program was made constituting an example of how the horns should be mounted. LHD = Loaders and trucks/underground rock excavation SDE = Surface drilling equipment TME = Tunnelling and mining equipment
I programmet LMS Test. Abstract:
In the last few years, and especially since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare services have been moving online. Today, patients can book appointments with doctors and read their medical records in apps and web services. It is important that these services are equally accessible to all patients, regardless of for example disability. This study aims to identify opportunities and challenges in adapting these digital healthcare services towards increasing accessibility for screen reader users with visual impairments. Eight people with visual impairments participated in the study, whereof five had complete vision loss and three had low vision. First, the participants were interviewed about their experiences of using screen readers as well as their views on digital healthcare. Secondly, a usability test was conducted on an existing system at the online health service provider Kry. The interviews indicated that screen reader users face a lot of accessibility barriers online, and therefore might be hesitant towards using digital healthcare. Yet, accessible digital healthcare can bring positive consequences such as making people with visual impairments more independent in handling medical documents and communication with clinicians. Many of the common barriers mentioned, such as unlabelled buttons and missing alternative text for images were found in the usability test of the Kry app. Some barriers even caused dead ends, resulting in that only three out or eight tasks in the usability test were completed by all the participants. From the results of the interviews and usability test, this study proposes a set of recommendations for achieving screen reader friendly online services. The recommendations include for example prioritising simple navigation, always providing alternative text and to test with assistive technology. The recommendations are applicable to other types of services as well, although they might be extra important in the digital healthcare sector where accessibility is of extra high importance.

Jiang, Hui. "Audible noise reduction in the high frequency injection based sensorless torque control for EPS applications." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2012. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/29091/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis has investigated the reduction of audible noise in low speed sensorless controlled drives for automotive electrical power steering (EPS) applications. The specific methods considered employ saliency tracking high frequency (hf) voltage injection in the machine's estimated d axis. In terms of the audible noise reduction, a novel random sinusoidal hf injection sensorless method has been proposed. The perceived audible noise due to the hf injection can be reduced by randomly distributing the injection frequencies around a centre frequency, such that it is perceived as a background hiss rather than the fixed tone heard with fixed hf injection methods. By analysing the A-weighting scales used to classify human perception of audible noise and frequency analysis of the recorded noise, an injection frequency of (lS00±328) Hz is found to have the lowest audible noise level compared to other random frequencies and other fixed frequencies methods. A 10 kHz square wave hf injection sensorless method has also been implemented. The frequency analysis of the recorded audible noise indicates that it also may be lower than for the fixed hf sinusoidal injection. In terms of control performance, sensorless torque control for these methods has been achieved from zero speed to ±240rpm with up to ±60A load (about 63% rated load). Similar position estimate quality has been demonstrated. Dynamic performance for a step change in torque current demand and for a speed reversal has been performed, and the random injection method with (1S00±328) Hz frequency has been found to be able to control a step change in torque demand current of 50A whilst for the 10kHz square wave injection method only a 40A step change can be achieved. On the other hand, the average position error after the speed transient has settled is less for the 10 kHz square ewave injection than for the random injection.

Calarco, Francesca Maria Assunta. "Soundscape design of water features used in outdoor spaces where road traffic noise is audible." Thesis, Heriot-Watt University, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10399/3084.

Full text
Abstract:
This research focused on the soundscape design of a wide range of small to medium sized water features (waterfalls, fountains with upward jet(s), and streams) which can be used in gardens or parks for promoting peacefulness and relaxation in the presence of road traffic noise. Firstly, the thesis examined the audio-visual interaction and perceptual assessment of water features, including the semantic components and the qualitative categorisation and evocation of water sounds; and secondly, the thesis investigated the effectiveness of the water features tested in promoting relaxation through sound mapping. Different laboratory tests were carried out, and these included paired comparison tests (audio-only, visual-only and audio-visual tests), semantic differential tests, as well as tests aimed at the qualitative categorisation and evocation of water features. Sound maps of the water generated sounds were developed through the use of propagation models based on either point or line sources. Three acoustic zones (‘water sounds dominant zone’, ‘optimum zone’ and ‘RTN dominant zone’ (RTN: road traffic noise)) were defined in the maps as the zones where relaxation/pleasantness can be promoted over a 20 m × 20 m area for different road traffic noise levels. Paired comparisons highlighted the interdependence between uni-modal (audio-only or visual-only) and bi-modal (audio-visual) perception, indicating that equal attention should be given to the design of both stimuli. In general, natural looking features tended to increase preference scores (compared to audio-only paired comparison scores), while manmade looking features decreased them. Semantic descriptors showed significant correlations with preferences and were found to be more reliable design criteria than physical parameters. A principal component analysis identified three components within the nine semantic attributes tested: “emotional assessment,” “sound quality,” and “envelopment and temporal variation.” The first two showed significant correlations with audio-only preferences, “emotional assessment” being the most important predictor of preferences, and its attributes naturalness, relaxation, and freshness also being significantly correlated with preferences. Categorisation results indicated that natural stream sounds are easily identifiable (unlike waterfalls and fountains), while evocation results showed no unique relationship with preferences. The results of sound maps indicated that small to medium sized water features can be used mainly in environments where road traffic noise levels are equal or lower than 65 dBA.

Abstract:
This project is situated in Olievenhoutbosch - a still-developing community - within a new urban design framework called the Olievenhoutbosch Osmosis Framework, which is a student project criticizing the original Olievenhoutbosch Ministerial Housing Estate Framework of July 2005. The framework addresses the issues related to connectivity in the area, and the design intervention attempts to address this issue on a human scale, on various experiential levels. The dissertation explores the use of multi-functional theatre spaces with varying degrees of interaction and levels of activity. The primary generators for this design intervention has been its urban connectivity, location, the specific site, human movement, and human activities related to the site and the programme of the intervention. In view of the context, the programme, the design intent of the framework, and the location in the framework, the design intervention will create spaces both in and around the structure in which various activities can take place, through the interplay between different tectonic elements.

Shaw, Patricia (Patricia Hyman). "Relaxation Training in Anxiety and Stress Management Differential Effects of an Audible vs. Imaginal Meditational Focus." Thesis, North Texas State University, 1986. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc332358/.

Full text
Abstract:
The hypothesis was tested that meditation using an audible word-sound would be superior to silent repetition of the same word in producing decrements in autonomic arousal and improvements in anxiety, mood, and the ability to cope with stress. The influence of hypnotic susceptibility upon improvement was also evaluated. Thirty subjects, assigned to one of three groups: audible meditation, silent meditation, and relaxation control, met one hour weekly for six weeks to practice their respective technique and discuss their progress. All subjects were evaluated using the Harvard Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility, a medical symptom checklist, the Spielberger Trait Anxiety Scale, a self-rating of state anxiety, and factors C and Q4 of the 16PF. Finger temperature was taken as a measure of physiological arousal. Confidence ratings of the respective strategies were taken pre- and post-treatment.

Glenn-Smith, Sarah K. "The use of social media as a conduit to promote social justice in the Deaf Community, as a cultural and linguistic minority, through the visual language of American Sign Language: A movement against Audism." Diss., NSUWorks, 2017. https://nsuworks.nova.edu/shss_dcar_etd/81.

Full text
Abstract:
This research employed a case study approach to understand emerging themes that may be garnered through documenting the lived experiences of online Deaf activists who have used the video feature available through social media outlets, such as YouTube, as a way to overcome the language barrier typically present for linguistic minorities who are leading social movements within an English-speaking, hearing majority. The focus of this study was the members of the Deaf Community that have taken to an online podium in their fight for autonomy and equality. They champion their Deaf identity, their right to agency and autonomy in areas of language, access, education and employment, in what has exploded into the largest social movement in their cultural history. Therefore, two questions were at the center of this research: 1. "How has experiencing audism affected the lives of Deaf people?", and 2. "How has the use of social media as a platform to fight against audism through natural linguistic expression in American Sign Language impacted that experience?". The growth of individual Deaf identity has created a community action network for the Deaf Community, and access to the technology of videophones and instant access to wireless Internet has brought with it the use of video blogs, or vlogs, within the Deaf Community at explosive rates. The movement from disability to a place of diversity and cultural, ethnic and linguistic minority personhood for the Deaf is a path that is still being forged. Presented in this study is a glimpse into this journey, through a case study of their lived experience.

Benson, David Howard. "Minimum audible movement angles for discriminating upward from downward trajectories of smooth virtual source motion within a sagittal plane." Thesis, McGill University, 2008. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=18787.

Full text
Abstract:
In virtual auditory display, sound source motion is typically cued through dynamic variations in two types of localization cues: binaural disparity cues and spectral cues. Generally, both types of cues contribute to the perception of sound source motion. For certain spatial trajectories, however, namely those lying on the surfaces of cones of confusion, binaural disparity cues are constant, and motion must be inferred solely on the basis of spectral cue variation. This thesis tests the effectiveness of these spectral variation cues in eliciting motion percepts. A virtual sound source was synthesized that traversed sections of a cone of confusion on a particular sagittal plane. The spatial extent of the source's trajectory was systematically varied to probe directional discrimination thresholds.

"Optimisation of sludge pretreatment by low frequency sonication under pressure." Thesis, Toulouse, INPT, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013INPT0129/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this work is to optimize high-power low-frequency sonication (US) pretreatment of sludge, and especially to investigate for the first time possible improvements by higher pressure and audible frequency. After a preliminary examination of regular process conditions (sludge conditioning, sludge type, prior alkalization, temperature control, etc.), effects of US parameters (power -PUS, intensity -IUS, specific energy input -ES, frequency -FS, etc.) and of hydrostatic pressure (Ph) were specifically looked into, separately and in combination, first under cooling at constant temperature (28°C), then under the progressive temperature rise provoked by sonication. First, it was confirmed that specific energy input (ES) plays a key role in sludge US disintegration (i.e. solubilisation of organic matter) and that temperature rise during adiabatic-like sonication is beneficial through additional effects of thermal hydrolysis and cavitation. At a given ES value, low FS (12 kHz vs. 20 kHz) and high PUS enhance soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) due to more violent cavitation, while hydrostatic pressure gives rise to an optimum value due to its opposite effects on cavitation threshold and intensity. One major result is that optimal pressure depends on IUS (PUS) as well as temperature profile, but not on ES, FS, nor sludge type. Setting the other parameters at the most favorable conditions expected, i.e. 12 kHz, 360 W , 28 gTS/L, and adiabatic conditions, final optimization was achieved by searching for this pressure optimum and examining sequential procedure to avoid too high temperature dampening cavitation intensity and damaging the transducer. Such conditions with sequential mode and Ph of 3.25 bar being selected succeeded in achieving very high SCOD, but only marginally improved subsequent methanization yield

Hilmersson, Christina. "Detection of Cracks in Single-Crystalline Silicon Wafers Using Impact Testing." Scholar Commons, 2006. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/3789.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is about detection of cracks in single-crystalline silicon wafers by using a vibration method in the form of an impact test. The goal to detect cracks from vibration measurements introduced by striking the silicon wafer with an impact hammer. Such a method would reduce costs in the production of solar cells. It is an inexpensive, relatively simple method which if commercialized could be used as an efficient in-line production quality test. A hammer is used as the actuator and a microphone as the response sensor. A signal analyzer is used to collect the data and to compute frequency response. Parameters of interest are audible natural frequencies, peak magnitudes, damping ratio and coherence. The data reveals that there are differences in frequency between the cracked silicon wafers and the non-cracked silicon wafers. The resonant peaks in the defective wafers were not as sharp (i.e., lightly damped) and occurred at lower frequencies (i.e., lower stiffness) with a lower magnitude and a higher damping ratio. These differences could be used to detect damaged product in a solar cell production line.
