Abstract:
According to Nazi statistics, in 1945, approximately 10% of concentration and death camp guards were women. And yet, the Aufseherin, or female camp guard, is barely there in both Holocaust historiography and literature. This is due to their relatively low numbers, gendered readings of the Holocaust, including the post-war categorisation of all women as victims of National Socialism, as well as reluctance to examine female perpetration. This reluctance extends into fiction, which has tended to focus on Holocaust victims not perpetrators due to a long-held belief that it’s unseemly at best, unethical at worst, to depict anyone other than the victims. On the few occasions that Aufseherinnen do appear in fiction, they are usually portrayed as masculinised sadists, when, for the most part, the reality was much more banal. This thesis contains an exegesis and a creative work. The exegesis looks at the history the female camp guard and explores her representation in literature, taking into account the changing emphasis brought by the application of women’s studies onto Holocaust historiography, as well as how the concept of all women as victims of National Socialism has created a dichotomous view of female Holocaust perpetrators as either victims or sadists, when the reality was more often somewhere between. It examines the relationship between empathy and sympathy, looking at whether negative empathy has created a taboo surrounding the portrayal of the female camp guard in fiction. It argues that negative empathy is necessary in order to gain a nuanced understanding of the female camp guard and challenges the notion that understanding equals forgiveness. It also explores how The Reader by Bernhard Schlink, which is the only novel to explore a female camp guard with nuance, and The Kindly Ones by Jonathan Littell, which is written from the first-person perspective of a Holocaust perpetrator, a perspective that does not yet exist for a female perpetrator in fiction, address these issues. The creative work is The Mare, historical fiction based on the true story of Hermine Braunsteiner, an Aufseherin who worked at Ravensbrück, Majdanek and Genthin. Written in the two first-person voices of Hermine and her American husband Russell Ryan, the novel seeks to represent a female camp guard with nuance, a feat that has not been achieved in fiction to date.

Diese Dissertation umfasst drei Aufsätze über die Rolle von Informationsintermediären und Intermediäre mit Aufsichtsfunktionen in Kapitalmärkten. Der erste Aufsatz untersucht, ob sich verschiedene Leerverkäufer bei ihrer Auswahl von Zielunternehmen anhand von sichtbaren Merkmalen unterscheiden. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Hedgefonds und Investmentmanager im Durchschnitt größere und jüngere Unternehmen bevorzugen, während sich Banken auf Unternehmen mit weniger Restatements der Finanzdaten und einem höheren Verschuldungsgrad konzentrieren. Der zweite Aufsatz beschreibt, wie Unternehmen auf aktivistische Leerverkäuferberichte reagieren. Es wird festgestellt, dass die Antwortrate erheblich steigt, wenn der Bericht von deutlich negativen abnormalen Renditen begleitet wird und wenn die Leerverkäufer neue Beweise vorlegen. Dies stimmt mit der Vorstellung überein, dass Leerverkäufer als Informationsintermediäre fungieren können. Eine Nichtbeantwortung ist außerdem ist mit einer weniger negativen Aktienkursreaktion bei Veröffentlichung und mit weniger nachteiligen Ergebnissen verbunden. Die dritte Aufsatz fokusiert sich auf so-genannte Monitoring Trustees. Sie sind bei der Überwachung von Banken behilflich, die in der Europäischen Union während der letzten Finanzkrise staatliche Beihilfen erhalten haben. In einer von Hand gesammelten Stichprobe werden die Merkmale und Aufgaben dieser neu implementierten Aufseher und ihre Rolle im Zusammenhang mit dem Berichtsverhalten der Banken untersucht. Die Ergebnisse deuten darauf hin, dass diese zusätzlichen Aufseher die Transparenz und das Berichtsverhalten der Banken bei der Finanzberichterstattung beeinflussen können, insbesondere wenn die Berichterstattung über Kreditverluste und Anpassungen der Geschäftsberichte berücksichtigt werden. This dissertation comprises three essays on the role of information and monitoring intermediaries in capital markets. The first essay investigates whether different short sellers vary in their selection of target firms using observable firm characteristics. Results show that hedge funds and investment managers on average prefer larger and younger firms, whereas banks focus on firms with fewer restatements and a higher leverage. The second essay provides descriptive evidence on how firms respond to activist short seller reports and how these responses are associated with outcomes for the targeted firms. It finds that the response rate increases substantially when the report is accompanied by significantly negative abnormal returns and when the short sellers provide new evidence which is consistent with the idea of short sellers acting as information intermediaries. Not responding is associated with a less negative stock price response when the report is released and fewer adverse outcomes. The third essay shifts the attention to Monitoring Trustees who assist in the supervision of banks that have received state aid in the European Union during the last financial crisis. It explores in a hand-collected sample the characteristics and duties of these newly implemented monitors and it studies the role of these supranational monitors and the banks’ reporting behavior. Results suggest that these additional supervisors can influence the banks financial reporting transparency and reporting behavior when mainly loan loss reporting and restatements are accounted for. Abstract:
Diploma thesis "Female Overseers and Doctors in the Concentration and Extermination Camps of Nazi Germany" deals with life and deeds of these women before and during World War 2. In my thesis I would therefore like to address the possible causes of the Holocaust, I want to think about how we can from the relatively recent past World War 2 learn, or whether there are any options to prevent similar incidents. It will try to hold on to the role of women in the extermination camps, which were the main venue of the program extermination of Jews and other minorities. I will focus on the phenomenon of "bad women" in the death camps, thus nazi women or female doctors. I would like this type of women looked at from a sociological point of view. If possible, a description of their origin, family background, education, interpersonal relationships, behavior in the camp and the like. It is clear that there are more reasons why some individuals become a cruel figure. Of course, some tendencies to violence inside each and every one must be encoded. I believe, however, that the main role is played by education, whether at home or at school.
