Abstract:
Introduction: Studies in healthy volunteers have demonstrated that peroneal nerve stimulation augments blood flow. The studies described within this thesis aimed to establish whether use of the geko™ neuromuscular stimulation device was effective and augments arterial venous and microcirculatory flow in patients with lower limb arterial and venous disease. The fibrinolytic and angiogenic activity of electrical stimulation within this cohort was also examined. Methods: Ethical approval was obtained for all aspects of the described studies. This study examined historic change of riparian plant communities and fluvial geomorphic response of gravel-bedded streams and their floodplains to over 50 years of hydrologic disturbance. Four tributary basins of the Arkansas River were analyzed. Lake Creek, Clear Creek, and Cottonwood Creek are drainages similar in area, physiography, and vegetation composition. However, Lake Creek may receive an instantaneous discharge of approximately 28 m3sec-1 from the Twin Lakes tunnel, over three times the normal flow of the stream during spring runoff. By contrast, Clear Creek and Cottonwood Creek, no

The objective with the thesis is to research how to match a company's human resources with job assignments received from clients. A common problem is the difficulty for computers to distinguish what semantic context a word is in. This means that for words with multiple interpretations it is hard to determine which meaning is the correct meaning in a given context. The proposed solution is to use ontologies to implement a query augmentation that will improve defining the context through users adding suggestions of relevant words. The intuition is that by incrementally adding words, the context

Real-time scheduling policies have been widely studied, with many known schedulability and feasibility analysis techniques for different task models, that have advanced the state-of-the-art. Most of these techniques are typically derived under the assumption of negligible runtime overheads which may not be realistic for modern embedded real-time systems, and hence potentially compromises the guarantees on their correct behaviors. This calls for methods to reason about the functioning of the system under the presence of such overheads as well as to predictably control them. Controlling these ov

Task-oriented dialogue (ToD) systems need to interpret the user's input to understand the user's needs (intent) and corresponding relevant information (slots). This process is performed by a Natural Language Understanding (NLU) component, which maps the text utterance into a semantic frame representation, involving two subtasks: intent classification (text classification) and slot filling (sequence tagging). Typically, new domains and languages are regularly added to the system to support more functionalities. Collecting domain-specific data and performing fine-grained annotation of large amou

We documented 19 mortalities attributed to a variety of causes including cougar predation (n = 10, 53%), bluetongue virus (n = 2, 11%), reproductive complications (n = 2, 11%

Species augmentation is a method of reducing species loss via augmenting declining or threatened populations with individuals from captive-bred or stable, wild populations. In this dissertation, species augmentation is analyzed in an optimal control setting to determine the optimal augmentation strategies given various constraints and settings. In each setting, we consider the effects on both the target/endangered population and a reserve population from which the individuals translocated in the augmentation are harvested. The goal of the scheduler is to maximize the weighted throughput, that is, the total weight of packets transmitted. Due to the natural lack of information about future, an optimal performance cannot be achieved, we thus pursue competitive analysis and its refinements to analyze online algorithms on worst-case i
