Vermittels einer erneuten Betrachtung erhaltener Materialien und der Suche nach weiteren Quellen zur Rezeption von Bach-Aufführungen im frühen 19. Jahrhundert wird versucht, die Kenntnis damaliger Bach-Rezeption zu vertiefen. Dabei stehen zum einen Thomaskantor August Eberhard Müller als Träger der Aufführungstradition, zum anderen verschiedene zeitgenössische Berichte als Formanten einer Rezeptionsgeschichte im Mittelpunkt.

Abstract:
Abstract This article examines the reception of Heliodor’s Aethiopica in German novels around 1700. The ‘Heliodor model’ proves to be remarkably persistent, as the form’s specific affordances offer an attractive variety of possible uses. At the same time, writers stick to the legitimized form of the novel for reasons of genre politics. In analyzing Eberhard W. Happel’s Afrikanischer Tarnolast (1689) and August Bohse’s Letztes Liebes- und Heldengedichte (1706), the article shows how these exemplary novels transform the ‘Heliodor model’ in idiosyncratic ways, and argues that these transformations aim at exploring and expanding the potential of literary characters.

<h4><span>Noticia del texto</span></h4><p><span>El escrito cuya traducción el lector tiene entre sus manos nunca llegó a publicarse en vida de Kant, sino años más tarde por obra de Dilthey (1889). Fue redactado en el contexto de una polémica intelectual que, por ese entonces, agitaba la vida académica alemana. En efecto, luego de la publicación de la </span><span>Crítica de la razón pura</span><span> en 1781, las reacciones –tanto positivas como negativas– no se hicieron esperar. Entre las negativas se cuenta la de Johann August Eberhard (1739-1809), férreo defensor de Leibniz y Wolff, quien edificó una trinchera en contra del kantismo desde la Universidad de Halle. Para estos fines, fundó la </span><span>Philosophisches Magazin </span><span>(1788-1792), órgano destinado a difundir las ideas en contra del filósofo crítico. En 1790, Kant respondió a estos ataques publican</span><span>do el escrito </span><span>Über eine Entdeckung nach der alle neue Kritik der reinen Vernuft durch eine ältere entbehrlich gemacht werden soll</span><span> (</span><span>Ak. VIII</span><span>)</span><span><sup>1</sup></span><span> y dio la disputa por terminada.</span></p><p><span>En lo que respecta al texto que hemos traducido, ocurre que, en la cuarta sección del tomo segundo de la</span><span> Philosopisches Magazin</span><span> (1790), se publicaron tres artículos del matemático alemán Kästner (1719-1800): “¿Qué significa “posible” en la geometría euclideana?” (</span><span>cf. </span><span>391-402), “Sobre el concepto matemático del espacio” (</span><span>cf. </span><span>403-419) y “Sobre los axiomas geométricos” (</span><span>cf. </span><span>420-430). Estos artículos tenían el objetivo de demostrar la superioridad de la postura de Eberhard. Sin embargo, en un osado movimiento, Kant redacta (también en 1790) una recen</span><span>sión argumentando que, por el contrario, las afirmaciones de Kästner le dan la razón a él y no a Eberhard.</span></p>

Der Artikel widmet sich der Beschreibung mehrer Bach-Quellen, die ihren Standort ein- oder mehrmalig gewechselt haben. Anhand dieser Auseinandersetzung sollen exemplarisch verschiedene Probleme der Quellenkritik deutlich werden. Abstract:
Kant famously criticizes Leibniz for his apparent neglect to observe the difference between two sources of cognition: understanding and intuition. This is the reason that Leibniz supposedly intellectualized the phenomena by identifying them with things in themselves. In Kantian terms, Leibniz fell prey to an amphiboly of concepts which, in the case of his understanding of substance, has led him to assume monads—that is to say, ideal unities which exist in a state of pre-established harmony; for this is the only possible form of community between ideal substances. Distinct versions of this argument can be found in Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason, notably in the notoriously difficult passage entitled “On the amphiboly of concepts of reflections”, and in some later writings, such as the Kantian reply to the self-declared Leibnizian Johann August Eberhard (On a Discovery whereby any New Critique of Pure Reason is to be made Superfluous by an Older One, from 1790) or the late fragment What Real Progress has Metaphysics made in Germany since the Time of Leibniz and Wolff? (originally from 1793, but published post mortem in 1804).

Der Autor stellt sich der tradierten Auffassung entgegen, Bachs Vokalschaffen sei seinerzeit lediglich ausnahmsweise außerhalb seiner eigenen Wirkungsstätten erklungen und er lediglich als Tastenvirtuose von weitergehendem Ruf gewesen. Er skizziert die Genese dieses Bach-Bildes und zeichnet parallel die Entwicklung einer gegenläufigen Sicht nach, die sich auf verschiedene nach und nach zu Tage getretene Dokumente stützt. Um solche systematisiert und stichhaltig auswerten zu können, werden zunächst die Grundlagen der Auswahl und Auswertung solcher Quellen festgestellt. Vier Beispielbetrachtungen zu mitteldeutschen Kirchenmusikerkollegen Bachs (G. G. Wagner, J. T. Krebs d. Ä., J. A. Matthaei, G. F. Abstract:
The thesis examines three enlightenment textbooks of literary arts of that period, which were all published in 1783 and significantly contributed to dissemination of aesthetic ideas. Its primary aim is to determine how aesthetics, as a separate philosophical discipline, entered into these three selected textbooks of literary arts of that period, and in what ways it has influenced their interpretation. It raises a question of how the presence or absence of aesthetics influenced the concept of these texts not only as a whole, but also in developing specific theories, themes and ideas that are further compared in this thesis. It analyses the main sections of the textbooks and introduces their basic structure and specific opinions, which are then critically evaluated. The aim of the thesis is to examine the character of the interpretations and grasp the theories of particular kinds of arts depending on whether they were performed within or outside the framework of aesthetics. The presented thesis should contribute to a better understanding of the differences and similarities between German and Scottish reflections of aesthetic questions at the end of 18th century based on these three examples of textbooks.

Abstract:
This chapter is the second of three chapters to look at the relationship between a Thomaskantor, who oversaw the church music, and a Kapellmeister (music director) of the public concerts. Thomaskantor Johann Adam Hiller and Kapellmeister Johann Gottfried Schicht are examined. Schicht succeeded Hiller as Gewandhaus orchestra director in 1785, and eventually became Thomaskantor in 1810, succeeding August Eberhard Müller. At the Gewandhaus, Schicht increased the amount of sacred music performed, while adjusting the concert repertoire to reflect changes that Hiller, in partnership with Church Superintendent Johann Georg Rosenmüller, implemented in the churches. The invasion of Napoleon into Saxony affected the public performance of music. When Schicht became Thomaskantor, church attendance was down. Schicht geared the performance of church music to attract middle-class concert audiences to the church. The Gewandhaus was now the dominant music institution in Leipzig, and church music would imitate it.

In 1777 it was revealed that there were not only white negroes and other weird and wonderful hybrids in Loango, there were also black Jews with some striking customs. This was revealed in a book by Christian George Andreas Oldendorp. The scientists of the Enlightenment were as fascinated by these black Jews as they had been by the white negroes and other hybrids. Some, such as Theophil Ehrmann, were dubious about Oldendorp’s revelation. But leading Enlightenment figures such as Anton Büsching, Conrad Malte-Brun, Johann David Michaelis, Eberhard August Wilhelm von Zimmermann, Kurt Sprengel, and others debated their importance from a racial and historical standpoint. Other black Jews were invoked by Paul Jakob Bruns. The Ethiopian Jews had been introduced to Enlightenment thinkers by James Bruce. Jews, who were anxious to be seen as white, were not much interested in black Jews. An exception was Ludwig Markus, who wrote about Loango Jews and others, including the Falashas of Ethiopia. Black Indian Jews were brought into the conversation and became an important object of Enlightenment speculation about race and color determinism. The idea of a color spectrum for Jews was born.
