Abstract:
This article focuses on the photographs of Augusto Malta, the official photographer of the city of Rio de Janeiro, made between 1904 and 1929. It departs from the work of Brian Massumi, Sara Ahmed, and Anna Gibbs on affect theory to argue that Malta's images were responsible for supporting a rhetoric of contagion used to justify the violent biopolitical policies of the Brazilian republican government. Furthermore, I assert that this rhetoric depended on the mobilization by Malta of affects widely circulated in the popular media of the period. This study aims to bring affect theory into dialog with the vast body of existing historical, visual, and sociological literature on the so-called Brazilian Belle Époque. This period in the history of Brazil, and especially of Rio de Janeiro, has been amply studied by scholars from diverse disciplines. Nevertheless, engagement with theories of affectivity and the work of Malta, especially in English-speaking scholarship, remains limited. This article speaks to the implication of photography, architecture, and urban planning in medical and biopolitical discourses, contributing to the study of the mechanisms that produce and reproduce myths of progress and the emancipating power of reason in early twentieth-century Latin America.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractThe Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya has, since 1980, been involved in no fewer than three important judgments at the International Court of Justice at The Hague, dealing with Libya-Tunisia, the Libya-Malta and the Libya-Chad boundaries. The Government of Libya accepted all the judgments made at the ICJ without equivocation. The settlement of the Mediterranean continental shelf issues with Tunisia (1982) and with Malta (1985) may be seen as technical adjustments leading to a fixing of boundaries in undemarcated areas. Both judgments were comparatively favourable to Libya and extended Libya's area of hydrocarbon activities off-shore.In the matter of Libyan land claims to the Aouzou strip on the Chad borderlands, the situation was rather different. The international boundary between Libya and Chad was laid down under a 1955 convention. In 1972 the Libyan Government annexed the Aouzou strip. The ICJ gave its judgment on 3rd February 1994, by 16 votes to 1 finding that the boundary between the Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya and the Republic of Chad is defined by the Treaty of Friendship and Good Neighbourliness concluded on 10th August 1955 between the French Republic and the United Kingdom of Libya, thus restoring the Aouzou strip to Chad.A select bibliography of sources dealing with Libya's international boundaries is attached, itemising key texts in Western languages.

Abstract:
Abstract. Eastern Sicily is affected by earthquakes and tsunamis of local and remote origin, which is known through numerous historical chronicles. Recent studies have put emphasis on the role of submarine landslides as the direct cause of the main local tsunamis, envisaging that earthquakes (in 1693 and 1908) did produce a tsunami, but also that they triggered mass failures that were able to generate an even larger tsunami. The debate is still open, and though no general consensus has been found among scientists so far, this research had the merit to attract attention on possible generation of tsunamis by landslides off Sicily. In this paper we investigate the tsunami potential of mass failures along one sector of the Hyblean-Malta Escarpment (HME). facing Augusta. The HME is the main offshore geological structure of the region running almost parallel to the coast, off eastern Sicily. Here, bottom morphology and slope steepness favour soil failures. In our work we study slope stability under seismic load along a number of HME transects by using the Minimun Lithostatic Deviation (MLD) method, which is based on the limit-equilibrium theory. The main goal is to identify sectors of the HME that could be unstable under the effect of realistic earthquakes. We estimate the possible landslide volume and use it as input for numerical codes to simulate the landslide motion and the consequent tsunami. This is an important step for the assessment of the tsunami hazard in eastern Sicily and for local tsunami mitigation policies. It is also important in view of tsunami warning system since it can help to identify the minimum earthquake magnitude capable of triggering destructive tsunamis induced by landslides, and therefore to set up appropriate knowledge-based criteria to launch alert to the population.

In the 19th century was given to the photographers the function of recorders of a world passing through many changes. Those professionals were hired as the responsibles to keep the images that were changing quickly, especially in the cities. There was a desire to build an album dedicated to the memory of times, and prove of the changes in the world. This was the work that Augusto Malta did for the mayor Pereira Passos. Through this way the photography is analyzed as a faithful representation of the visible world. The Kiosque s images became a prove to the project of modernization of the city, in a relation to the national mobilization around a modern identity.

The objective of this paper is to perceive the way as, in Rio de Janeiro of belle époque, the idea of Carioca, the modernity and its counterpoints are constructed, thought and given to understand through the photography of Augusto Malta. We aim, therefore, to understand as Malta, while social person, presents the Carioca society elaborating representations through photographic images. We intend to show as these images describe the reality of belle époque Carioca, not as a mirror, but as a “vision of world”, among other possibilities as an interpretation of what the society was at the moment of click of the photographer or, of what it could be in the future. We understand, thus, the workmanship of the photographer Augusto Malta as one particular “visual proof” of the Carioca context of belle époque, which was be always between two ways of existence: as direct, objective message, culturally established by its origin of applied technology and, apparently, without necessity of decodings, and as a polissemic message, ambiguous, that give us the refraction of the reality.

In this work we present an analysis of the role of photography in two different moments in the history of the city of Rio de Janeiro: with Augusto Malta, the official photographer of the municipality of Francisco Pereira Passos, in the early twentieth century (1902-1906), and the collaborative project via Instagram Rio 365, in the current management of Eduardo Paes (XXI century). By establishing an anachronistic relationship between the two historical periods and photographic models, these scenarios are approximated in order to understand questions (similarities and differences) that underlie them. Aiming the understanding of these images, we investigate the social-technical networks in which these pictures operate and are inserted, articulating aspects related to memory, materiality and languages.

The city of Rio de Janeiro, especially in the first decade of the twentieth century and its cultural environment are considered as key partners for this thesis, which is concerned to think three wide themes from the relationship between different actors and the city. The first bundle articulates three movements: an attempt in Rio, to seek the identity or specific features; recap some points presented in academic literature that most directly contributed to elaborate distinctions between the space of the capital and city places; and reflections on the possible links between projects of civilization, culture and progress during reforms led by President Rodrigues Alves and the mayor Pereira Passos, from differing views over the city and the capital. The second line works a ratio of four movements: first, the chronicler João do Rio and the city of Rio de Janeiro are placed facing each other as subjects, whereas both interfere with one another on the built each other s vision; in the three following movements, there are dialogues established between João do Rio and some of his contemporaries, watching the game waving borders between some of the systems of interpretation. The third and final axis consists of three movements: the first one interweaves the fields of photography and memory; the next inquires on the statutes that photography has taken since its appearance in the nineteenth century; and the third notes the job of the photographer Augusto Malta as a privileged spot to list the changes that happened in the city, so some photos of Central Avenue and snack bar sets are analyzed in order to distinguish, again, some views on modernity constructed in Rio.

Augusto Malta (1864-1957), despite having occupied the position of the municipal official photographer of Rio de Janeiro between 1903 and 1936 and has numerous particular images of the city, had his name linked to Francisco Pereira Passos, from his time until this days. The proposal of this dissertation is to analyze Malta as a subject behind the objective, that is, someone who has an entire field of technical and visual possibilities, choose to each click a way to represent the world. At the same time that the experiences of the city lived by Malta incite and constitute his looking, I believe he reconstructs the city from the rectangle of his machine. In addition to question the training of historical epitome Malta, photographer-of-Pereira-Passos, the analysis is based around two sets of photographs: the images produced on the kiosks of the city between 1903 and 1911, and the photographs that had caught the Avenida Central/Rio Branco between 1904 and around 1930. From these pictures, I observe that Malta search recreate both the civilization of the boulevard as the delay of the kiosks, and on the other hand, the multiplicity of apprehensions made possible by their images presents a game between fixity and movement in the records of these urban spaces.

In this dissertation are identified centers and sub-centers from the perspective of Space Syntax and empirical analysis uses and values of urban land. The Centre, as explanatory category of urban form is characterized by identifying a single core composed of more integrated way in the urban system, while the sub-centers are connected to this core through arrangements morphological relatively less integrated than the Center. Using such an approach, we carried out the investigation of the centrality applied to recent economic and spatial transformations of the Região Metropolitana de Belém (RMB), focusing on the area of Rod. Augusto Montenegro, called "Nova Belém". Considering the important role of real estate developers in the process of urban recovery, we sought to understand the economic growth experienced by this settlement and at the same time, view their gradual consolidation as a new real estate space, possibly a new metropolitan center. This research also appropriates the theory of urban sprawl to analyze the creation of centers, subcenters and centralities are products of daily movements along the main roads of the urban area, raising the question of accessibility decisive factor in the differentiation of Use and land value in RMB. The centrality is taken, as well as a specific condition that the settlements might acquire as a result of the combination of two factors: i) the attraction and concentration of land uses and ii) road accessibility and fluidity of the road network, taking up in view of its influence on the choices of land use.

Abstract:
In 1777 it was revealed that there were not only white negroes and other weird and wonderful hybrids in Loango, there were also black Jews with some striking customs. This was revealed in a book by Christian George Andreas Oldendorp. The scientists of the Enlightenment were as fascinated by these black Jews as they had been by the white negroes and other hybrids. Some, such as Theophil Ehrmann, were dubious about Oldendorp’s revelation. But leading Enlightenment figures such as Anton Büsching, Conrad Malte-Brun, Johann David Michaelis, Eberhard August Wilhelm von Zimmermann, Kurt Sprengel, and others debated their importance from a racial and historical standpoint. Other black Jews were invoked by Paul Jakob Bruns. The Ethiopian Jews had been introduced to Enlightenment thinkers by James Bruce. Jews, who were anxious to be seen as white, were not much interested in black Jews. An exception was Ludwig Markus, who wrote about Loango Jews and others, including the Falashas of Ethiopia. Black Indian Jews were brought into the conversation and became an important object of Enlightenment speculation about race and color determinism. The idea of a color spectrum for Jews was born.

Abstract:
The meteorological factors study in the beetle population dynamics, as well as its association with vegetation, is of fundamental importance for understanding the variation that occurs in its population. Thus, it was reported the influence of temperature, humidity, insolation and precipitation on the beetles in general and it was presented a case study that examined the relationship between time and population fluctuation of curculionids in Mata de Cocal and an area used for crop rotation and animal grazing, in the city of Teresina, Brazil, from August 2011 to July 2012. It was verified that beetles populations certain are governed and conditioned by meteorological variables to a greater or lesser extent depending on the characteristics of the community itself and the biotic and abiotic environmental factors of the area where they live: the temperature that changes the its metabolic rate, the insolation and humidity that can affect its fertility and longevity can be cited as examples. From the case presented, It was found that the Curculionidae community has a positive association with precipitation and humidity and a negative association with insolation and temperature, being that in native forests curculionids are not as dependent on meteorological variables as in agricultural fields.

Abstract:
In the course of the seventeenth century the character of the relationship between the European states changed dramatically, with important repercussions in the Mediterranean. Until the end of the Thirty Years’ War in 1648, Catholic confronted Protestant, and confessional identity was an issue of surpassing significance for the competing powers in Europe. After 1648, a greater degree of political realism, or cynical calculation, began to intrude. Within a few years, it was possible for the English arch-Protestant Oliver Cromwell to cooperate with the Spanish king, while English suspicion of the Dutch led to conflict in the North Sea. The character of English involvement in the Mediterranean changed: royal fleets began to intervene and the English (after union with Scotland in 1707, the British) sought out permanent bases in the western Mediterranean: first Tangier, then Gibraltar, Minorca and, in 1800, Malta. The period from 1648 to the Napoleonic Wars was marked, therefore, by frequent about-turns as the English switched from Spanish to French alliances, and as the whole question of the Spanish royal succession divided Europe and opened up the prospect of spoils from a declining Spanish empire in the Mediterranean. While Spain’s difficulties were obvious, it was less clear that the Ottomans had passed their peak: the Ottoman siege of Vienna in 1683 was unsuccessful, but in the Mediterranean Turkish galleys still posed a serious threat, and their Barbary allies could be relied upon to give support when naval conflict broke out. Even so, the Venetians managed to gain control of the Morea or Peloponnese for several years, and, interestingly, it was they who were the aggressors. Bolder than they had been for some time, the Venetians ambitiously aimed to crack Turkish power in the regions closest to their navigation routes. In 1685 and 1686 they captured and demolished a number of Turkish fortresses on either side of the Morea, culminating in the capture of Nafplion on 30 August 1686. This was only the prelude to an attempt to clean up the Dalmatian coast, starting with the Turkish base at Herceg Novi, which they captured in September 1687.
