Abstract The Movimiento de Izquierda Revolucionaria (MIR) was a political-military organization of Marxist ideology which between 1978 and 1990 defined and deployed in Chile a strategy of armed struggle to confront the dictatorship led by Augusto Pinochet Ugarte. Its objective was to prevent the dictatorship from completing its project of re-founding Chilean society (economically, politically, socially and culturally) and, in this way, to advance towards the development of a socialist revolution.

Este artículo analizará el proceso de regionalización impulsado por la dictadura del general Augusto Pinochet, a fines de los años setenta. Nuestra hipótesis es que en el caso chileno la modernización económica era condición para la despolitización social, la redefinición de la política y la construcción de una nueva “democracia”. La regionalización permitía escalonar la participación, centralizando las decisiones importantes en el nivel nacional y regional, relegando la incorporación ciudadana al último nivel, el escalón comunal. This paper examines two face-to-face encounters during the Chilean post-dictatorship: the “cueca sola” as a way of facing the disappeared, and the confrontation of Francisco Cuadrado Prats with the corpse of Augusto Pinochet, as an encounter with the face of the dictatorship. I examine the centrality of the face in ethical relationships, and analyze these performances and their connection to silencing, in the “cueca sola”, and to spitting as a mute but significant act when words are no longer enough.
