Abstract:
This article aims at showing that, in The Meditations of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius, Book I and chapter 30 of Book VI create a synthesis between the roman pietas and the stoic piety of Books II-XII. Book I is a list of what Marcus owes to his relatives, masters and gods ; it represents an act of pietas towards them as well as a spiritual exercise which helps the author to memorize and imitate their virtuous actions. Chapter 17 of Book I and chapter 30 of Book VI dedicated to Emperor Antoninus, give provisional utterance to a piety that cannot be reduced to the conceptual categories of stoicis

Abstract:
We reconsider a recently published equestrian career from Vinča, which is the career of Marcus Ulpius Cerialis. He was praepositus during the Parthian war of Lucius Verus (AD 161–166) and commanded legionaries from Cappadocia and auxiliaries from Hispania. His second military decorations were obtained during the Germanic war from 169 to 175, but was awarded to him during the triumph of 176. Consequently, we propose a new chronology of his career and link it with other important actors of Marcus Aurelius’ reign.

Abstract:

Favorinus is chiefly known, besides the brief account in Philostratus and three speeches of his own composition, from his admirer Aulus Gellius and his enemy M. His engagement with philosophy was sufficient to bring him into conflict with Galen. His close friend Herodes, a man of high birth and immense wealth, enjoyed a great reputation as an orator that did not secure the survival of any speeches barring one miserable effort almost certainly spur

Abstract This chapter covers the Empire at the height of its power and glory. As captured by Edward Gibbon: “In the second century of the Christian Era, the Empire of Rome comprehended the fairest part of the earth, and the most civilized portion of mankind. The frontiers of that extensive monarchy were guarded by ancient renown and disciplined valor. The gentle but powerful influence of laws and manners had gradually cemented the union of the provinces. Their peaceful inhabitants enjoyed and abused the advantages of wealth and luxury.” In this chapter I discuss the reigns of the five “good” e
