This thesis describes the development of a body of theory explaining why the principals of Australian software firms have difficulty in changing the organizational structures of their businesses. The need for change is predicated on the view that availability of capital is an essential prerequisite for sustainable growth in Australian software firms and that firm principals, in the main, have not implemented organizational structures preferred by Australian investors. The conventional accounting notion of ‘going concern’ — that a firm will continue its business operations in the same manner indefinitely — has underpinned accounting practice for over one hundred years. This idea has provided a rationale for spreading costs over accounting periods and for deferring costs as assets in balance sheets. An alternative idea that is widely regarded as reliable in the literatures of economics and deliberate action is that firms continually adapt to changes in market and economic conditions. That is economic behaviour. The implications of that view of a firm for acco

Salvo, Aires Felipe. "Effects of woody weeds on fuels and fire behaviour in Eastern Australian forests and woodlands." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/12839.

Full text
Abstract:
Fire is a common feature in most ecosystems in Australia. Much of the native flora is well adapted to occasional fire and recovers over time in a variety of ways. Invasive species or ‘weeds’ are also a common feature in most Australian ecosystems, particularly in forests and woodlands close to urban settlements. Many invasive species have the potential to recover or recolonise more rapidly following disturbance than native species and may change the fuel load and structure of invaded areas. Invasive species can alter the fuel load and structure providing the fine fuel necessary for initiation

Pascoe, Caroline Myra. "Screening Mothers: Representations of motherhood in Australian films from 1900 to 1988." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/385.

Full text
Abstract:
Although the position of mothers has changed considerably since the beginning of the twentieth century, an idealised notion of motherhood persists. The cinema provides a source of information about attitudes towards mothering in Australian society which is not diminished by the fact that mothers are often marginal to the narrative. While the study recognises that cinematic images are not unconditionally authoritative, it rests on the belief that films have some capacity to reflect and influence society. The films are placed in an historical context with regard to social change in Australia

Abstract:
Business planning is at the core of entrepreneurship as it has implications for opportunity discovery and exploitation. This thesis' objectives are to disentangle the relationships between business planning and venture emergence to reconcile previous inconsistent findings. It reveals that the formalization of planning, the effort invested in the venture and the revision of the plan influence success for entrepreneurs in the process of launching their firm. This thesis provides generalizable results about the phenomenon of business planning by using a longitudinal random sample of emerging f
