This research will experiment with poetry as a source of archive, adding to the more commonly deployed materials such as film, still photographs, or letters used in documentary production. In this thesis, I examine in Peter Carey’s early fiction the portrayal of Australia’s struggle to imagine a unique identity for itself. Three different, but overlapping, approaches will be woven together to serve as a lens through which his work can be read. First, it will be useful to situate the work within the context of Australian history and popular culture, which suggests an obsessive search for an “authentic” Australian identity, as well as the theoretical work on the social construction of such identities. Second, I will draw upon the work of Benedict Anderson, paired with that of Phen

As an island nation, Australia is heavily dependent on its ports. Ports are essential infrastructure, acting as a gateway connecting domestic and international markets. However, the resources boom has highlighted significant bottlenecks in the supply chain. Port regulation has at times been criticised for impeding port development and investment. There are concerns that the level of investment in port infrastructure in Australia is insufficient to sustain the increase in trade we will see in the future. It therefore seems an appropriate time to review port regulation in Australia. This paper s

Abstract:
[Truncated abstract] Currently, Alcoa World Alumina Australia (Alcoa) mines and undertakes procedures to rehabilitate approximately 550 ha of jarrah forest each year at two open-cut bauxite mines in South-West Western Australia. Alcoa aims to establish a self-sustaining jarrah forest ecosystem that maintains the functions of the landscape prior to mining, including biodiversity, on areas that have been mined for bauxite. Indigenous terrestrial orchids form a significant proportion of the indigenous geophytic plant species that either fail to colonise rehabilitated areas or do so very slowly. T

Abstract:
The thesis analyses post-colonial relations between Aborigines and Europeans in a remote region of Australia - the Kimberley division in the north of Western Australia. Post-colonial relationships stem from the political and economic enfranchisement of Western Australian Aborigines consequent on a series of legislative changes, and changed material relationships, from about 1963. Post-colonial relations are conceived of as occurring between cultural systems. The thesis initially describes traditional Aboriginal culture and the early period of colonisation.
