Abstract:
This article discusses L. W. Sumner's theory of well-being as authentic happiness. I distinguish between extreme and moderate versions of subjectivism and argue that Sumner's characterization of the conditions of authenticity leads him to an extreme subjective theory. More generally, I also criticize Sumner's argument for the subjectivity of welfare. I conclude by addressing some of the implications of my arguments for theories of well-being in philosophy and welfare measurement in the social sciences.

Abstract:
Studies on the concept of happiness have led to questions about whether all symptoms of happiness correspond to a real and healthy emotional state. Therefore, in this research, a scale was developed to examine the concept of “authentic happiness” coined by Seligman. Firstly, literature that explains authentic happiness and defines its relationship to other psychological concepts was reviewed, and then a theoretical framework was developed based on this information and the psychometric characteristics of the scale were introduced. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis revealed that the fit indices were compatible with twodimensional structure. These two dimensions have been entitled as “Authentic Happiness” and “Fluctuating Happiness”. Based on the findings of the present study, the Authentic Happiness Scale (AHS) is a reliable and valid scale to determine the authentic happiness levels of university students.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Purpose This study aims to investigate the relationship between perceptions of authentic leadership (AL) and affective commitment (AC) both directly and indirectly through the mediating effect of happiness at work. Design/methodology/approach Empirical research has analyzed the data from a questionnaire administered to a sample of 543 employees belonging to various public and private organizations in Cape Verde. Structural equation modeling was used to test the model. Findings It was found that the perceptions of AL explain employees’ happiness at work. Perceptions of AL also predict AC both directly and through the mediating effect of happiness at work. Practical implications The findings suggest that AL predicts happiness at work, which, in turn, explain employees` emotional bond to the organization. These results provide evidence that the quality of working environment created by leaders plays an important role in the extent to which employees develop a better emotional bond at work. So, the organizations, particularly in Cape Verde, should focus on training leaders with authentic characteristics. Originality/value In addition to verifying the direct relationship between AL and AC, this study introduced the mediating effect of the happiness, providing a model that depicts the chain effect between AL, AC and happiness, integrating these concepts in a single study.

Abstract:
AbstractIn Buddhism, happiness is achieved when a person can perceive the true nature of reality, unmodified by the mental constructs we superimpose upon it. This authentic happiness comes from having an exceptionally healthy state of mind that underlies and suffuses all emotional states and that embraces all the joys and sorrows that come one's way. The mental states necessary for authentic happiness are not simply found or happened upon. Rather, happiness is achieved through mental training that purges the mind of afflictive emotions, such as hatred and compulsive desire, which literally poison the mind, and above all through the eradication of ignorance. This article discusses the Buddhist conception of happiness and its attainment. In particular, the article addresses the methods and practices that Buddhism employs to train the mind to achieve authentic happiness and the recent developments in contemplative neuroscience that complement and advance these methods.

Abstract:
Adaptation and Validation of the Steen Happiness Index into Polish Authentic happiness is a construct comprising 3 factors: pleasure, engagement, and meaning (Seligman, Parks, & Steen, 2005). Three studies involving altogether 464 participants adapted and validated the authentic happiness measure Steen Happiness Index (SHI; Seligman, Steen, Park, & Peterson, 2005) into Polish. In Study 1 the Polish version of the scale was developed and its convergence with the original SHI was assessed using bilingual response method, r = .98, p < .001. In Study 2 cluster analysis confirmed the theoretical profiles of happiness, testing the proposed 3-factor structure of the scale, χ2 (116) = 180.62, GFI = .95, CFI=.97, SRMR = .04, RMSEA = .04, RMSEA 90% CI [.25 - .45]. Test-retest reliability (Study 3) yielded satisfactory results, rtt = .87, p < .01. This is the first study providing empirical support for the structural validity of the authentic happiness construct. It also shows the cross-cultural generality of the construct. We discuss some practical applications of the scale.

Abstract:
The main objective of this research was to test central assumptions from the Self-centeredness/Selflessness Happiness Model. According to this model, while self-centered psychological functioning induces fluctuating happiness, authentic–durable happiness results from selflessness. Distinct mediating processes are supposed to account for these relationships: afflictive affects (e.g., anger, fear, jealousy, frustration) in the case of the former, and both emotional stability and feelings of harmony in the case of the latter. We tested these hypotheses in two studies based on heterogeneous samples of citizens (n = 547). Factor analyses revealed that self-centeredness (assessed through egocentrism and materialism) and selflessness (assessed through self-transcendence and connectedness to other) were two distinct psychological constructs. Second, while self-centeredness was positively and significantly related to fluctuating happiness, selflessness was positively and significantly related to authentic–durable happiness. Finally, distinct psychological processes mediated these relationships (study 2). On one hand, the relationship between self-centeredness and fluctuating happiness was fully mediated by afflictive affects. On the other hand, emotional stability and the feeling of being in harmony partially mediated the relation between selflessness and authentic–durable happiness.

Abstract:
Positive psychology emphasizes growth, adaptive functioning, and human potential. The present study contributes to this literature by examining the impact of exposure to a positive psychology curriculum among nontraditional students taking foundational courses in a career college. Mixed methods were utilized to assess changes in student well-being and goal setting quantitatively through pre- and post-tests of the Authentic Happiness Survey and the Satisfaction with Life Scale as well as identifying emergent themes from qualitative analysis of student reflections and written assignments over a 9-week term. Twenty-five students participated in foundational courses, which placed an emphasis on positive psychology. Paired samples t tests, Cohen's d, thematic analysis, and a researcher-designed Likert-scale assessed changes from the beginning of the course to the end among the quantitative and qualitative measures of overall well-being and goal attainment. Some of the notable findings included significantly positive changes in students' reports of authentic happiness, and 76% of students reporting that they had attained an academic, social, and personal goal over the course of the 9-week curriculum. Change in self-reported satisfaction with life approached, but it was not statistically significant. Thus, the implementation of a positive psychology curriculum in a nontraditional student population created positive social change in this particular sector of academia and was associated with increased overall well-being and attainment of goals.

Based on the model of authentic happiness (Seligman, 2000), this study aims to (1) explore the core concept of Taiwan adolescents’ authentic happiness;(2) develop adolescent authentic happiness questionnaire; and(3) evaluate the effect of happiness enhancing activities. In Study 1, we investigated adolescents’ core concept about authentic happiness and the activities that adolescents would engage to obtain short-, middle-, and long- term happiness. The author asked two groups to report how and what they did in so-called “altruistic activities” and the “pleasant activities”. To obtain short term happiness, they tended to engage in physical pleasure activities; while long term happiness were mostly gained through self-actualizational activities. Adolescents understood two conflict sources, pleasure and pain, were of the same importance in achieving happiness. They believed that the realization of positive social relationship and self- actualization were crucial factors of happiness. In Study 2, Taiwan Adolescent Authentic Happiness Questionnaire was developed with 978 subjects recruited from five junior and senior high schools. The principal component analysis with Varimax rotation and confirmatory factor analysis were used to examine the factor structure of the scale. The results showed that 18 items were grouped into 4 dimensions: self-actualization, altruistic happiness, interpersonal relationship, and family happiness, that accounted for 53﹪of the total variance explained. All of the18 items had factor loadings higher than .40 and external validities were pretty good: AAHQ were significantly (positively) correlated with (1) Seligman’s Orientation to Happiness Scale, (2) Diener’s the Satisfaction with Life Scale, and (3) positive emotions in a Emotional Scale; it also significantly (negatively) correlated with Beck’s Depression Scale. The internal consistency reliabilities ranged from .77 to .83, and the test-retest reliability was .631. Academic achievement, family income, and time spent on homework were three most successful factors among other background variables in predicting authentic happiness of Taiwan adolescents. In Study 3, the participants were 7th grade students from five different classes. One class was control group, and the others are experimental groups. The experimental groups participated in 4 various intentional activities to obtain hope, gratitude, strengths, and the best job; while the control group simply recalled life experiences. All of the five groups were administered the pre-test before the experimental treatment, the post-test two weeks after the experimental intentional activity, and the delay test one month after. The results showed the experimental groups had higher authentic happiness and lower depression than the control group on both the post-test and the delay test. The intentional activity could increase happiness and decrease depression. The most effective intentional activity was the gratitude group. We discovered each intentional activity had different optimal frequency. In sum, this research suggests that it is possible to enhance adolescents’ happiness. Educators need to develop more intentional activities that are attractive to adolescents. Educators also need to encourage students to make the best of their strength/virtues to enhance happiness.

In an increasingly competitive market, brand images must satisfy the spiritual needs of customers to earn their loyalty. Various philosophies and religions throughout human history have emphasized a sense of happiness. In Taiwan, the Directorate General of Budget also publishes an annual report on the happiness of Taiwanese citizens. Happiness is a life goal pursued by people worldwide and has a substantial effect on society and the economy. As an emotional marketing strategy used to create brand differentiation, happiness was a key factor that influences brand image. This study was divided into 4 phases. In the first phase, based on positive psychology and a literature review, it constructs a scale of happiness brand image according to the Modified Delphi Method. In the research process, it obtains four evaluation dimensions and 21 strategic indicators. In the second phase, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is used to rank the indicator strategy decision-making of items of the happiness brand image scale in order to recognize key factors of happiness brand image. The results indicated that the top factors regarding brand images were “intention of brand image to commit to and participate in Corporate Social Responsibility,” “environment friendly,” “brand image shows an impact on society,” “brand image is meaningful and shows goals for society”, and “brand image results in aesthetic affection”. In the third phase, analysis of the subjects by cluster analysis, and are classified into 4 types of consumer. In the final phase, based on the happiness brand image scale constructed in this study is used to measure the tea shop brands in Taiwan, and to check the practicality of the happiness brand image scale. By construction of the scale, strategy indicators of happiness brand image and 4 different types of consumers, this study argues that the originally-abstract concept of happiness can serve as a reference and provide a research contribution to academic and practical fields.

Abstract:
This dissertation explores Aristotle's concept of human flourishing, or eudaimonia, through the lens of the flourishing self. Connections will be made with Heidegger's concept of authenticity, as seen through the lens of authentic selfhood. It is argued that there is some type of authenticity or self-appropriation already present in Aristotle's ethical thought. For both thinkers, however, the particularized self is subsumed into a type of universality--the universality of excellence or care.

The bustle and bustle of modern women’s life is even worse compared to the men and leisure participation plans an important role to release pressure and also to pursue happiness. This study focuses on women’s "active leisure participation" and "passive leisure participation" and examines their effects on perceived stress and authentic happiness. Five major purposes are specified: (1) to explore women's active and passive leisure participations; (2) to examine the relationship between women's leisure participation and perceived stress; (3) to discuss the relationship between women's leisure participation and authentic happiness; (4) to inspect the direct and interference effect from social support; (5) to compare the relationships among leisure participation, perceived stress, and authentic happiness based on women’s active and passive leisure participation. Subjects of 30 years old to 60 year old of woman, were sampled by snowball sampling method and conducted investigation. Total 322 effective questionnaire were gathered and used in this study. Five main results can be concluded. First, for woman active leisure activities more likely are “the outdoor activity” and “the sports”, and “the mass media” and “the social activity” were perceived as passive participation. Second, women's active and passive participation significantly reduce their perceived stress. Third, only active leisure participation can significantly enhance women’s authentic happiness. Fourth, social supports are important to the relationship between "active leisure participation" and "authentic happiness". Especially when low social supports, the frequency of active leisure participations will increase women’s authentic happiness. Finally, perceived stress and authentic happiness are negatively correlated. The management application for women, community recreation and leisure business are proposed based on study findings.

The study was based on Fredrickson’s broaden-and-build theory of positive emotions; it aimed to investigate the relationships among optimism, gratitude and authentic happiness of university students. Furthermore, the study constructed the model and verified if interpersonal relations and coping strategies were the mediators of the model. A questionnaire survey was conducted in this study. The first data obtained from 282 students was employed to test the reliability and validity of all the scales. The second data from 1251 students was meant to explore the difference between demographic variables and optimism, gratitude, interpersonal relations, coping strategies and authentic happiness; in addition, they were used to construct and verify the structural model. The samples completed self-report instruments including Basic Data Questionnaire, Optimism Scale, Gratitude Scale, Interpersonal Relations Scale, Coping Strategies Scale and Authentic Happiness Scale. Data obtained from the survey were analyzed by Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), Descriptive Statistics, one-way ANOVA, one way MANOVA and structural equation modeling (AMOS). The major findings of this research were as follows: 1. The scales were appropriate to evaluate university students’ optimism, gratitude, interpersonal relations, coping strategies and authentic happiness. 2. The university students’ optimism differed according to gender, college and grade; their gratitude correlated with gender and college; their interpersonal relations differed according to gender, public/private school, college and grade; their coping strategies correlated with gender, public/private school, college and grade; and their authentic happiness differed according to gender, public/private school, college and grade. 3. The university students’ optimism had a direct and positive effect on their authentic happiness. The relationship between optimism and authentic happiness was also mediated by interpersonal relations and coping strategies. The indirect effect was greater than the direct effect. 4. The university students’ gratitude directly and positively impacted their authentic happiness. The relationship between gratitude and authentic happiness was also mediated by interpersonal relations and coping strategies. The indirect effect was greater than the direct effect. According to the findings and conclusions, this study proposed the suggestions for university students, universities and future research.

This study selected the lodging industry, and lodging tourists as the object. The purpose of this study is exploring lodging types in the difference on the experiential value, authentic happiness and behavioral intention. Many of the literatures that explore the value of experience and behavioral intentions are rarely related to authentic happiness, and the literature that is specifically discussed for the lodging industry is even less. Therefore, the main contribution of this paper is to incorporate the authentic happiness of the accommodation travelers into the model. Considering it, further examine the mediating effect between experience value and behavior intention. A questionnaire survey was conducted on 2017 Taipei International Travel Fair, and the researcher validated the hypotheses by One-Way ANOVA and demonstrated that different lodging types have significant differences in experience value, authentic happiness, and behavioral intention. In particular, the International Tourist Hotel almost always obtains the highest rating on tourists in all aspects of experiencing value, authentic happiness and behavioral intention, and only the meaningful life part in authentic happiness is behind to Bed and Breakfast (B&B), and the researcher validated the model by hierarchical regression analysis and demonstrated that experiential value significantly and positively influenced behavioral intention; authentic happiness plays an important role as an mediator, especially the mediating effect of entertainment on authentic happiness and behavioral intention is significantly higher than the mediating effect of investment reward and sensibility. Finally, based on the findings, this study proposes managerial implications and suggestions for future researchers.

Abstract:
This research project explores whether the delivery of positive psychology interventions in the workplace through an employee assistance program (EAP) can improve employees’ authentic happiness/flourishing as well as decrease symptoms of depression. A small convenience sample of 13 Manitoba public school educators accessing employee assistance were recruited for a quasi-experimental research design. Nine participants were randomly assigned to the experimental group and the remaining participants assigned to the control. Experimental group members participated in a six session psychoeducational, experiential, and process-oriented positive psychotherapy group that met once a week over six weeks. Experimental group participants’ scores on the authentic happiness/flourishing measure increased by a statistically significant 9% and depression scores decreased by a statistically significant 45% from pre-intervention to one month post-intervention. The study’s findings therefore provide promising confirmation that positive psychology interventions delivered through EAPs can make a meaningful difference as both secondary prevention and primary enhancement strategies in the workplace.

Abstract:
The attention now turns to the Pensées. Futility and wretchedness are two aspects of the human condition as depicted by Pascal (his ‘anthropology’). All our efforts to attain happiness are doomed to failure. The pursuit of glory is pointless; we sacrifice real goods for the sake of our imaginary existence in the eyes of others. The pursuit of wealth or knowledge is precarious. Our activities are mostly distractions from an unwelcome present. We pursue our goals with all seriousness, while partly aware that they are futile. History is governed by chance and social order has no relation to justice. If there is an ideal authentic justice, we are unable to realize it—witness the variety of moral and political values. This is only one example of a general weakness of our cognitive powers (which Pascal emphasizes by appealing to Pyrrhonist sceptical arguments). Our capacity to reason is swamped by the power of imagination; we are vulnerable to forces beyond our control. Pascal’s view of the human condition is compared to Camus’s conception of the absurd.
