Abstract:

This thesis begins the process toward a concept of [authenticity] that is both fragmented and performative. I outline a history in philosophy and performance studies where authenticity has been deployed, and demonstrate how it is often tied to modernist ideologies. I then offer "[authenticity]," with brackets, as a means to allow for this term to challenge these modernist conceptions of the self. I then track the ways in which "[authenticity]" opens the possibilities for a new approach to performing by exploring my performance of the poem, "Hydrangeas."

<p>This paper deals with an object donated by a group of members of the public to the Royal Armoury in Stockholm, Sweden. The donators claimed to own a horse bit that had been used by King Gustav II Adolf's mount in the battle of Lützen, where the King was killed. The bit was a gift to the donators' ancestor, the farmer and politician Petter Jönsson, from the King of Sweden, Oscar I, in the 1850's. This dissertation examines Lennart Sjögren’s conception of life as revealed through his poetry and other written documents. Light is shed on his writings in three chapters, with an Introduction that opens the investigations, and a Conclusion that sums up the findings.
