Abstract:
On occasion Charles Darwin can seem our scientific contemporary, for the subjects he engaged remain engaging today, but in his role as author he belongs to the past. It is not customary today for scientists to write book after book, as Darwin did, or for these books to serve as the primary vehicle of scientific communication. For Darwin, however, the book was central. He wrote at least eighteen, depending on what one counts; in hisAutobiographyhe entitled the section describing his most important work ‘An account how several books arose’; and in his personal Journal, begun in August 1838 after he had come to a mature sense of himself, he organized entries around his books. A characteristic entry is that for 1846: ‘Oct. 1st. Finished last proof of my Geolog. Observ. on S. America; This volume, including Paper in Geolog. Journal on the Falkland Islands took me 18 & 1/2 months:–’. Further, almost always he had a book under way: when one was complete, the next was begun. He called them the milestones to his life.

Abstract:
The article deals with definitions of «children's book», «book for children», «children's literature», «literature for children», «children's reading circle». The mentioned terms are divided into two groups. The first group includes those authors, who consider material and the structural aspects of book, its reader's purpose, printing and design. This issue was studied by S. G. Antonova, N. Z. Ryabinina, I. A. Zharkov, I. F. Pavlova, S. A. Karaichentseva. The second group considers genre and thematic characteristics of book, its effect on children development. Among researchers should be called I. N. Arzamastseva, I. G. Mineralova, S. A. Nikolaev, E. E. Zubareva, T. D. Polozova. All submitted definitions are discussed in details in the context of those tasks that solve children's editions. The author has collected theoretical and practical views of philologists, bibliologists, historians, editors on definitions of children's book and its essential meaning for each field of science. Based on scientific historicism methods and terminological analysis of general components of children edition, its material and structural sides, genre and thematic characteristics have been revealed. Functions of the children's book are determined: communicative, administrative, cognitive, educational, aesthetic ones. The article objective is studying the phenomenon complex, based on which the author has given an independent interpretation of this definition. Additional information on children's literature specific features and its «special» design is presented at National Standard GOST 7.60-90 «Editions. Fundamental types. Terms and definitions», as well as branch standards: OST 29.130-97 «Editions, terms and definitions», OST 29.127-96 «Publishing books for children», OST 29.127-2002 «Quality requirements of book and journal editions for children and adolescents». The resulting terminological analysis will be useful both for professionals of publishing and editorial business, researchers studying the history and formation of children's books, historians, as well as for teachers in the educational course «Children's Literature», «Bibliology». The conclusion is that the children's book will have a stable cover, which content and variety depends on time, professional activity of authors, artists, editors, publishers, and other persons relating to the book publishing system of the country and regions.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the history of Siberian regional children's book publishing. The author has collected theoretic-practical opinions of historians, bibliologists, publishers and booksellers, librarians and bibliographers, psychologists and sociologists, which purpose is to generalize and reveal regularities of books' flow for children. V. G. Belinsky, L. N. Tolstoy, F. G. Tol’, N. V. Chekhov developed the first concepts of children's book. N. K. Krupskaya, V. A. Sukhomlinsky studied the «core» of the children book repertoire. V. G. Sopikov, B. S. Bondarsky reviewed children's literature of the 19th century in their bibliographic works. The author allocated some organizational components using formal-logical, comparative-historical and structural-typological methods. The first block is related to studying such definitions as «children's book», «children's literature», «editions for children», «a circle of childhood reading», «the repertoire of children's books», their typological signs. The presented concepts are investigated according to tasks, which children's editions solve. S. G. Antonova and S. A. Karaichentseva touched issues of children's literature typology in their publications. The second block of literature reveals the children's book development in Russia in various periods of its formation. I. E. Barenbaum, A. A. Grechikhin, A. A. Belovitskaya studied general fundamentals of the book's history, while A. Ivich, L. Kohn, I. Lupanova considered the history of children’s books. The third block is devoted to printing and art features of the children's book design, activity of universal and specialized publishing houses to distribute literature for children. The fourth block explains such category as «reader - library», considers techniques of work with children's book, offers methodical recommendations for teachers and tutors. Readers’ activity is examined as well. The author analyzes interests, factors, incentives and aims influencing childhood reading. Dissertation researches disclose the regional specifics of children's book publishing in 1980-2013, confirm the considered subject relevance. The historical, comparative, formal and logical analysis carried out by the author will be useful both the specialists in publishing and editorial affairs, researchers studying the history and development of the children's book, historians, and teachers in the educational process of such courses as «Publishing and Editing», «Children's Literature», «Book Science». The author concludes that the children's book has been studied in different periods of its development in the context of numerous aspects, directions and components, which makes it possible to reveal the special patterns of its existence.

Abstract:
Mary Pope Osborne is a prominent contemporary children’s book author, best- known for her Magic tree house series. She creates an imaginary world in which the books in the magic tree house literally transport her child protagonists, Jack and Annie, to other times and places. Osborne’s books are written simply so that young readers can follow a story that engages them, as they learn about diverse cultures, history and science. In Buffalo before breakfast (1999), the eighteenth book in the Magic tree house series, Jack and Annie travel to a Lakota camp on the Great Plains of North America in the 1800s, before the arrival of white prospectors, settlers and soldiers. By recreating the life of a traditional Lakota camp, Osborne gives readers a version of Native American history that has been silenced and marginalised. This article will examine her representation of Lakota history, culture and spirituality in Osborne’s Buffalo before breakfast, and cite research to support the story she tells.

Abstract:
In this paper the author presented examples of academic dishonesty and substantial historiographic mistakes and fallacies - interpretative, methodological and factual - made by the authors of the article mentioned in the title of this contribution. Answering to their deliberate critics of the author?s book Istorija pred sudom, he points out that the authors of the mentioned article, firstly, did not offer neither proper nor sufficient argumentation for their general remarks about his work, labeling the book as one of ?questionable scientific value?. Supporting this and similar other labels they quote several paragraphs from the author?s book, contemplating about them instead of giving argumentative comments, sometimes even erroneously attributing to him the claims that he did not make in his book. Secondly, the author of this paper indicates that the mentioned authors took over some facts and conclusions from his book, without making any references to it. Thirdly, and most importantly, he developed a comprehensive argumentation for his claim that the document these authors founded their alleged research upon has never passed through the process of enactment and empowerment. Namely, the so called ?Decision of declaring Prince Regent Pavle Karadjordjevic a war criminal and an enemy of the people? has never been adopted by the Presidency of AVNOJ, as argued by Aleksic and Krstic Mistridzelovic. The document under the given title, which they used as if it was a historical source issued by the Presidency of AVNOJ, is merely a draft of a decision that has never been passed.

Abstract:
In the article «Genre dominants of Belorussian documentary: A. Adamovich’s and S. Alexievich’s experience» the author analyzes the concept of «documentary», «document» and «fact» in different scholars. The research deals with the process of formation of Belorussian national artistic-documentary proseon the basis of the works of Belorussian authors A. Adamovich «The Blockade book» (co-authored with D. Granin), «Out of the Fire» (co-authored with J. Bryl’ and V. Kolesnyk) and S. Alexievich «The Unwomanly Face of War…». The author reveals historical and ideological connections between these books, in which human voices are composed into a single complete whole, possessing a certain set of genre properties that manifest themselves both at the content and form levels. The focus is on distinguishing innovative features of the genre compared to «classic» documentary of the first half of the 19th century. The researcher views main peculiarities of the narrative, the author’s position while presenting eyewitness accounts, which may bе either objective or subjective. Composition, topic of the work and author’s foundation of the chosen structure are described. In the article there isthe investigation of the history of documentary genre, the reasons for its transformation and the specifics of modern «choir of voices» interpretation. The author of the article also refers to the ambiguous reception of S. Alexievich work by modern Ukrainian writers J. Andruhovich, J. Vynnychuk and O. Zabuzhko.

Derrick, Stephanie Lee. "The reception of C.S. Lewis in Britain and America." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/19765.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the publication of the book The Screwtape Letters in 1942, ‘C. S. Lewis’ has been a widely recognized name in both Britain and the United States. The significance of the writings of this scholar of medieval literature, Christian apologist and author of the children’s books The Chronicles of Narnia, while widely recognized, has not previously been investigated. Using a wide range of sources, including archival material, book reviews, monographs, articles and interviews, this dissertation examines the reception of Lewis in Britain and America, comparatively, from within his lifetime until the recent past. To do so, the methodology borrows from the history of the book and history of reading fields, and writes the biography of Lewis’s Mere Christianity and The Chronicles of Narnia. By contextualizing the writing of these works in the 1940s and 1950s, the evolution of Lewis’s respective platforms in Britain and America and these works’ reception across the twentieth century, this project contributes to the growing body of work that interrogates the print culture of Christianity. Extensive secondary reading, moreover, permitted the investigation of cultural, intellectual, social and religious factors informing Lewis’s reception, the existence of Lewis devotees in America and the lives of Mere Christianity and The Chronicles of Narnia in particular. By paying close attention to the historical conditions of authorship, publication and reception, while highlighting similarities and contrasts between Britain and America, this dissertation provides a robust account of how and why Lewis became one of the most successful Christian authors of the twentieth century.

Abstract:
This thesis consists of two parts, written and practical. The subject of the written part is life and work of the surrealist artist Toyen. Despite the fact that Toyen is primarily known as a painter, I look at Toyen primarily as a first class illustrator and graphic designer in my thesis. The practical part is then the making of author's books inspired by graphic creation of Toyen. The main sources of inspiration for me were mainly the drawing cycles from the war period, such as The shooting range, and her artistically adapted erotic themes that she pursued throughout the whole course of her work. The result is the making of author's book containing fifteen sheets including book jacket and flyleaf. The aim of my work was not only a summary and processing of the creation of this artist, but especially to give a tribute to Toyen in this way.

Abstract:
One of the first Czech research papers on self-publishing. Even though unsuccessful and forbidden authors could publish a book on their own in the past, the current phenomenon of self-publishing can be arranged on-line in just a few clicks and for much cheaper. Self- publishing began to spread since circa 2005 - in the Czech Republic and abroad simultaneously. This thesis shows how the development has unfolded differently in the Czech Republic and in the USA, which is considered the cradle of this technology. The first chapter of this thesis analyzes the history of book publishing and many different ways to publish a book, and defines self-publishing. The second chapter shows how the new technologies and media influenced the expansion of self-publishing. The third chapter analyzes and puts into context some of the Czech and the American self-publishing portals, and compares the providers of these services. Many professionals - editors, authors, and literary critics - criticize self-publishing for its amateurism and low quality content, which this work takes into account as well. This paper also documents some of the rare cases of self-published authors, who managed to succeed despite the tough competition from traditional publishing houses. In the last chapter the whole process of self-publishing...

Abstract:
Chapter 4 traces instances where the Synoptic authors self-consciously draw attention to their tradition’s status as written in bids for authority, often in reference to prior Gospels that they consider inferior. An initial section introduces the terms “textual self-consciousness” and “competitive textualization.” Following this section, the chapter addresses moments in each of the Synoptic Gospels where the author or authors draw attention to their status as written tradition. For Mark, the chapter highlights Mark 13:14, though it also shows how Mark is aware of Jewish Scriptures and positions himself with reference to them. For Matthew, the chapter makes an original scholarly contribution by focusing upon Matthew 1:1’s reference to the Gospel as a biblos (“book”), which shows that what Mark considered a “gospel” Matthew considered a “book.” For Luke, the chapter focuses upon the Lukan prologue of Luke 1:1–4, and specifically Luke’s awareness that he is entering a market for Jesus books by writing his Gospel.

This final chapter draws out some of the key messages of the book—how the behavior of judges on the Supreme Court can be best characterized using legal factors; and that among these, specialization in areas of law plays a key role. A review of the different models presented in the book shows that legal factors predominate when explaining the initial selection of cases, the size of the panel, the identity of the lead opinion author(s), and the final outcome. The conclusion identifies the key findings for different audiences, and sets out directions for future research on judges in common law systems.

Abstract:
This paper, first published in 2000, supplements a monograph by the author, Problems in Quintilian (1970), where many passages of Quintilian’s Institutio oratoria were discussed and often emended. It arose from prolonged discussion of the text of Quintilian with D. A. Russell, who was then preparing his acclaimed Loeb edition of the book (it appeared in 2001), and who contributed much to this piece. Some suggestions of the late W. S. Watt are also included. A large number of passages from Books 4–11 are discussed in detail, and suggestions made for the solution of both old and newly diagnosed problems. A final footnote brings together a series of marginalia and corrections to the original monograph.

Abstract:
In the preceding chapter, the intent was to provide the reader with a broad perspective on the chemical characteristics of cellular phospholipids. At the same time, emphasis was placed on the potential usefulness of this information in dissecting the importance of phospholipids in cellular events, such as signal transduction. There is no doubt that the large number of observations reported on the close relationship of phospholipids to the transduction process has stimulated a widespread (and gratifying) interest in these compounds. Certainly it is very clear now that stimulus-induced activation of cells leads to the turnover of specific membrane phospholipids. The following diagram reemphasizes several, but not all, possible reaction pathways that can be invoked during an agonist (stimulus)–induced activation of a cell and gives the possible sequelae: In each of the above reactions, the substrates phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylinositol bisphosphate normally are considered biologically inactive in membranes. Then, subsequent to activation of cellular phospholipases by a stimulus, biologically active products are formed from these compounds. Thus, inositol bisphosphate triggers the release of calcium ions from intracellular stores, diacylglycerol is implicated in the translocation and activation of protein kinase C, arachidonic acid can be converted to biologically active prostaglandins, and phosphatidic acid can be an agonist in its own right. The major point to be stressed here is that phospholipid turnover is intimately associated with the signal transduction pathway in cells. Hence an understanding of the chemistry of these phospholipids is of major relevance to delineating the complicated process of signal transduction. While investigation of the behavior of phospholipids in this pathway in platelets has been a consuming interest of this author, the main thrust in this book will be simply to acquaint the reader with the chemistry of phospholipids of major importance in signal transduction and also to discuss other phospholipids found in mammalian membranes. Inasmuch as most investigations on stimulus response in cells utilize quite small numbers of cells—for example, a typical experiment on human platelets might use 1 x 109 cells, which would yield ∼50 μg of total lipid—this poses a challenge to an investigator to be able to isolate and identify these lipids.

Abstract:
Abstract: The present work aims to recover the part of Le Corbusier´s theoretical production that can be defined as Manifesto to analyze it since its comparison with the analogue written by Rem Koolhaas. Due to the brevity of the present paper it will be focus on the analogies between two main Manifestoes: Towards an Architecture (Le Corbusier, 1923) and Delirious New York (Rem Koolhaas, 1978). The dialectic between these two Manifestoes is summarized in four main points: the intention of the text -rasion d´être-, its structure, the tone they used for the correspondent Manifesto and the relationship with the architectonic work of the authors. As we will see, theoretical and audiovisual strategies are duplicated from the master to the pupil who, on top of that, is able to reinterpret and manipulate them in a way that makes possible for his Manifesto to be considered even more efficient than Le Corbusier´s, at least, in its intention to involve the largest number of people. This is possible thanks to the knowledge that Koolhaas has over media, cinema and latests technologies that allows him to express what could be identified with Le Corbusier´s original ideas but in a contemporary way, so they seem to be brand new and much more understandable for today´s society. In this way, Koolhaas could be understood also as a kind of Le Corbusier living in the world Through the Looking-Glass organized as Lewis Carroll did in his famous book Alice´s Adventures in Wonderland. Abstract:
In 1969, S. G. Brush and C. W. F. Everitt published a historical review, that was reprinted as subchapter 5.5 Maxwell, Osborne Reynolds, and the radiometer, in Stephen G. Brush’s famous book The Kind of Motion We Call Heat. This review covers the history of the explanation of the forces acting on the vanes of Crookes radiometer up to the end of the 19th century. The forces moving the vanes in Crookes radiometer (which are not due to radiation pressure, as initially believed by Crookes and Maxwell) have been recognized as thermal effects of the remaining gas by Reynolds — from his experimental and theoretical work on Thermal Transpiration and Impulsion, in 1879 — and by the development of the differential equations describing Thermal Creeping Flow, induced by tangential stresses due to a temperature gradient on a solid surface by Maxwell, earlier in the same year, 1879. These fundamental physical laws have not yet made their way into the majority of textbooks of heat transfer and fluid mechanics so far. A literature research about the terms of Thermal Transpiration and Thermal Creeping Flow, in connection with the radiometer forces, resulted in a large number of interesting papers; not only the original ones as mentioned in subchapter 5.5 of Brush’s book, but many more in the earlier twentieth century, by Martin Knudsen, Wilhelm Westphal, Albert Einstein, Theodor Sexl, Paul Epstein and others. The forces as calculated from free molecular flow (by Knudsen), increase linearly with pressure, while the forces from Maxwell’s Thermal Creeping Flow decrease with pressure. In an intermediate range of pressures, depending on the characteristic geometrical dimensions of flow channels or radiometer vanes, an appropriate interpolation between these two kinds of forces, as suggested by Wilhelm Westphal and later by G. Hettner, goes through a maximum. Albert Einstein’s approximate solution of the problem happens to give the order of magnitude of the forces in the maximum range. A comprehensive formula and a graph of the these forces versus pressure combines all the relevant theories by Knudsen (1910), Einstein (1924), Maxwell (1879) (and Hettner (1926), Sexl (1928), and Epstein (1929) who found mathematical solutions for Maxwells creeping flow equations for non-isothermal spheres and circular discs, which are important for thermophoresis and for the radiometer). The mechanism of Thermal Creeping Flow will become of increasing interest in micro- and submicro-channels in various new applications, so it ought to be known to every graduate student of heat transfer in the future. That’s one of the reasons why some authors have recently questioned the validity of the classical Navier-Stokes, Fourier, and Fick equations: Dieter Straub (1996) published a book on an Alternative Mathematical Theory of Non-equilibrium Phenomena. Howard Brenner (since 2005) wrote a number of papers, like Navier-Stokes, revisited, and Bi-velocity hydrodynamics, explicitly pointing to the forces acting on the vanes of the lightmill, to thermophoresis and related phenomena. Franz Durst (since 2006) also developed modifications of the classical Navier-Stokes equations. So, Reynolds, Maxwell, and the radiometer may finally have initiated a revision of the fundamental equations of thermofluiddynamics and heat- and mass transfer.

Pothier, Stephen G., and David Chichka. "A Curious Result: A Combined Heat-Pump and Rankine Cycle Which Supplies Work and Cold Air to the Ambient." In ASME 2009 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. ASMEDC, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2009-12564.

Abstract:
The Kelvin-Plank statement of the Second Law of Thermodynamics states that work cannot be taken from a constant temperature reservoir without putting energy in first. This means a device cannot be built that produces work from ambient air temperature without a constant supply of work or heat into the device. However, this paper presents the analysis of a particular coupling of two cycles that appears to do just that. The machine combines two thermodynamically matched cycles: a heat-pump cycle and a Rankine cycle. Each cycle runs the other, with the net result being shaft work available to the ambient and an exhaust product of cold air. The only input to the machine is 12°C air from the ambient atmosphere. The heat-pump uses ammonia as the working fluid, absorbing heat from ambient atmosphere and supplying heat to the Rankine engine boiler. The Rankine cycle expansion engine uses propane as the working fluid, and supplies shaft work to power the heat-pump compressor. Using standard, well-known analysis, the net result is a machine that, once started, supplies work and cold air to the ambient with no further work input. Under ideal analysis, the heat-pump operates with a coefficient of performance of 6.85 and the Rankine cycle operates with an efficiency of 21%. Multiplying these gives a combined cycle efficiency of 1.44. The heat-pump superheater operates at an average temperature of −44°C, with a mass flow rate of 1.00 kg/s. It absorbs 106 kW of heat from ambient temperature air and supplies that heat to the Rankine cycle boiler. The Rankine cycle expansion engine has a mass flow rate of 2.51 kg/s, and produces 364 kW of work. Of this, 254 kW is supplied to the heat-pump compressor, 4 kW to the Rankine cycle feed-pump, and the remaining 106 kW of work to the ambient. This equals the heat extracted from the ambient; there is no unexplained creation of energy. All analysis was performed from standard engineering text books, and all thermodynamic data was taken from common industry charts. The cycles are common and well known, and the temperatures, pressures, and expansion ratios well within believable values. The analysis has been peer reviewed and no errors found. Yet when these two cycles with these two working fluids are combined, the result is net work to the environment and cold air, with no work or heat input. The authors do not believe the second law is flawed. We expect an error will be discovered, either in our analysis or in the thermodynamic tables of the two fluids that we used. We present the analysis and result in the hopes of having the error pointed out.

Abstract:
Professor M. Zhytaryuk’s review is about a book scientific novelty – a monograph by Professor M. Tymoshyk «Ukrainian journalism in the diaspora: Great Britain. Monograph. K.: Our culture and science, 2020. 500 p. – il., Them. pok., resume English, German, Polish.». Well-known scientist and journalism critic, Professor M. S. Tymoshyk, wrote a thorough work, which, in terms of content, is a combination of a monograph, a textbook and a scientific essay. This book can be useful for both students and practicing journalists or anyone interested in the history of the Ukrainian diaspora, Ukrainian journalism and Ukrainian culture. The author dedicated his work to Stepan Yarmus from Winnipeg, Canada – archpriest, journalist, editor, professor. As the epigraph to the book were taken the words of Ivan Bagryany: «Our press, born under the sword of Damocles of repatriation», not only survived and survived to this day, but also showed a brilliant ability to grow and develop. It was shown that beggars that had come to the West without money at heart can and know how to act so organized. It was also an example of how a modern «enbolshevist» and «denationalized» by the occupier man person is capable of a combined mass action».
