Abstract:
In this study, I combined the personality and social indicator approaches of authoritarianism to determine if these separate approaches reflect similar constructs, and also examined whether economic distress increases authoritarianism and its internal coherence. The writer, in contrast with the time-series designs used in previous social-indicator studies, controlled for extraneous historical events by sampling individuals within the same time period. One hundred and sixty-one employed and 41 unemployed adult manufacturing workers completed a ninety-five-item questionnaire. The questionnaire contained a short version of the right-wing authoritarianism scale (RWA), items reflecting the social indicators of authoritarianism, and both objective (family income, employment status) and subjective (worry about the economy, worry about personal finances) indices of economic distress.

Lindsey, James. "The Relationship of the Authoritarian Personality & Social Identity Theory." TopSCHOLAR®, 1993. https://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/2538.

Full text
Abstract:
Since social identity theory and authoritarian personality theory have been presented as opposing theories of discrimination, the present experiment explored whether authoritarianism could explain discrimination in social identity theory's minimal group paradigm. High, high average, low average, and low authoritarians were given three measures of in-group favoritism in minimal groups (two point -distribution tasks and a group -rating task). An authoritarianism main effect and an authoritarianism by order interaction on the point -distribution tasks indicated that authoritarianism significantly enhanced discrimination, but only when these tasks followed the group-rating measure. This interaction indicates that authoritarianism has greater influence on discrimination as in-group/out-group distinctions are made more salient. Authoritarianism did not influence discrimination in group ratings. Social identity theory proposes that individuals use discrimination to enhance their self-esteem, but only high authoritarians appeared to do so in this study.

The present PhD dissertation discusses the relationship between the Critical Theory of Society and empirical social research as elaborated in the work of the Institute of Social Research of Frankfurt, particularly after 1931, during the period in which it was under the direction of Max Horkheimer. Thus, it investigates to what extent such a nexus considered part of this theory s immanent coherence can be found in the research carried out in the United States and published as The Authoritarian Personality. The first chapter is dedicated to the reconstruction of Horkheimer s notion of interdisciplinary materialism. The discussion is based on his inaugural lecture as the Institute director, and on his essays published during the 1930s. In the second chapter, the main empirical social research projects carried out by the Institute members, in Germany and in the United States, are presented. The third chapter is dedicated to Theodor W. Adorno, his critique of Sociology and his views about the accomplishment of empirical research in the scope of Critical Theory. The last chapter is dedicated to an analysis of The Authoritarian Personality, seeking connections between the theory and procedures and instruments, and also between theoretical elaborations on their results.

Hall, Jesi L. "An Examination into the Relationship between Self-Compassion and Parenting Styles." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2015. https://dc.etsu.edu/honors/283.

Full text
Abstract:
High self-compassion has been shown to provide many benefits for overall well-being. Some studies have suggested that the environment in which an individual grew up could have some effect on this trait in adulthood. The present research examined the relationship between the parenting style with which an individual was raised and their later adulthood self-compassion and compassion for others. It was hypothesized that the responsiveness of the parent would be directly related to the way that an individual learns to respond to themselves and others. Authoritative parenting style was expected to be related to higher self-compassion and compassion for others as it is characterized by parents who respond positively to their child. Authoritarian parenting was expected to be related to lower levels of each construct as it is characterized by negative responses to the child’s actions. It was found that both authoritative and authoritarian parenting styles are associated with higher levels of self-compassion. The two parenting styles considered to negatively affect children raised in the style, authoritarian and permissive, were found to be related to higher levels of compassion for others. Future research directions for the relationship are discussed.

Abstract:
There are several leadership archetypes, some more well known than others. A leadership style which has been studied for a long time is the authoritarian. It can briefly be described as sovereign and controlling. The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the authoritarian leadership style and find parallels between management literature and the portrayal of a fictitious authoritarian leader. To answer our questions we have developed a model based on relevant management literature. With the help of the developed model we have analyzed a fictitious leader. We demonstrate how a television series depicts the actions of the authoritarian leader and the effects his actions have on his subordinates. Our study shows that there are links between the portrayal of the authoritarian leader in management literature and the authoritarian leader in fiction. The language of the essay is Swedish.

Abstract:
As Yancey (2003) has pointed out, the intentional character of racially integrated churches tends to lessen the social distance between Whites and minorities. The purpose of this study is to examine how racially hierarchy-attenuating and hierarchy-enhancing environments affect classism and sexism attitudes among congregations. The finding shows that multiracial churches promote H-A environment for class and race diversity, but not for gender equality. The class and race diversity is affected by organizational structure; on the other hand, gender equality is influenced by theologies. This study finds the answers to this discrepancy from the effect of biblical teachings on classist and sexist attitudes and the cumulative effect of structured domination of women.

Facing the world wide recession and the rapid industrial change, it’s very important if the supervisor could guide subordinates to contribute their productivity to the organization. In Chinese society, authoritarian leadership is very common managerial style. When the supervisor forces the authoritarian leadership and unwilling to delegate authority, then there is only top down operation relationship between supervisor and subordinate. This situation damages their communication and interaction. It also decreases subordinate’s morale. When subordinate is under the supervisor who has authoritarian leadership, they will react different behavior in the workplace as they have different personality. Therefore, this research studies the impact to subordinate behavior due to supervisor’s authoritarian leadership and employee’s personality. This research were based on questionnaires collected from 293 individuals, among them 210 were valid. Data was analyzed via ANOVA, to find out the correlation and regression analysis, then get conclusion below: There is obvious difference with the reaction of male subordinate in view of “resistance“ than female subordinate when facing authoritarian leadership. Senior subordinates with higher education have constructive resistance by means of aggressive communication with their supervisor. Compare with ordinary and senior staff, middle level manager easily adopt constructive resistance behavior towards their superior manager. Autocracy which is the factor among authoritarian leadership obviously has impact to subordinate’s “obedience” behavior; Harshness which is the other factor among authoritarian leadership remarkably impact the “ resistance “and “mood shifting ” behavior which resulted to negative influence. Simultaneously, autocracy and harshness has negative impact to subordinate’s constructive resistance behavior. Subordinate’s obedience is positively impacted by their generous personality, on the contrary, negatively impacts subordinate’s resistance behavior. Subordinate’s conscientious personality positively impacts their constructive resistance behavior but negatively impacts their “mood shifting” behavior. Subordinates showing high generosity behavior who are responsible, industrious, upright personality don’t show any negative reaction when confronting their supervisor.

In discussion of work stress sources, many researchers believe that the interpersonal relationship in work definitely is one of main sources in work stress. Previous studies have confirmed that subordinates' physical and psychological health is affected by traditional Chinese characteristics, authoritarian leadership and toxic emotion of supervisors really, but in the actual workplace, these three may exist each other or simultaneously. Therefore, the study aims to explore the two or three factors among traditional Chinese characteristics, authoritarian leadership and toxic emotions of supervisors affecting subordinates' physical and psychological health. Past studies for authoritarian leadership mostly used questionnaire survey that explored influence of authoritarian leadership style of supervisors on dependent variable. However, this study discusses influence of authoritarian leadership compatibility on subordinates' physical and psychological health. This study uses the Chinese Personality Inventory (CPAI-2) compiled by Miaoqing Zhang et al., Authoritarian Leadership Style Inventory in Paternalistic Leadership Styles Inventory compiled by Boxun Zheng, Toxic Emotion Inventory compiled by Shangren Gao and Goldberg's General Health Inventory (GHQ-28) as measurement tools for this study. With convenience sampling for subordinate general workers in Beijing area of China, the invention gets 102 supervisors, 192 subordinates, 192 pairs of superior-subordinate relation and 76% of effective recovery rate in effective questionnaire. In addition to verifying influence of traditional Chinese characteristics, authoritarian leadership and toxic emotion of supervisors on subordinates' physical and psychological health again, the study further observes that simultaneous existence of two (traditional Chinese characteristics and authoritarian leadership or traditional Chinese characteristics and toxic emotion)or three factors significantly affects subordinates' physical and psychological health, but authoritarian leadership and toxic emotion have no effect on subordinates' physical and psychological health. The authoritarian leadership compatibility really affects toxic emotion and physical and psychological health of supervisors and subordinates, and only subordinates' toxic emotion has complete or partial mediating effect to authoritarian leadership and subordinates' physical and psychological health while no significant effect to supervisors.

The purpose of this research is to explore the relationships of elementary school teachers'''' attitudes toward punishment to teachers'''' background variables, authoritarian personality, teaching efficacy, and belief of student behaviors. Total of 1588 teachers from elementary schools, which is nationally representative sample, participated in a questionnaire survey. In result, some findings are corresponding to prior studies. The multiple-regression analyses were used to explore the influence of background variables and median variables to dependent variables. The administrative position has great influence upon teachers’ attitude toward corporal punishment; teachers with administrative position were less approving corporal punishment than homeroom teachers. In median variables, teachers who accepted the hierarchy ( which concerns the teacher-student relationship) were prone to the use of corporal punishment while teachers with higher teaching efficacy were less approving the corporal punishment. In addition, the more negative attitude teachers have toward the student behaviors, the less approval of corporal punishment they have. Initially, two background variables were significantly affecting dependent variables. One was school administration position; the other was class size. When the median variables were considered, the latter becames less influential, and the R square increased 15.35%. That is to say, teachers’ background variables are not the main effects of teachers’ attitude toward corporal punishment. It is the median variable (teachers'''' personality, teaching efficacy, or belief of student behaviors) that really counts.

Various factors result in increasingly fierce competition among enterprises, including the advancement of society, the rapid changes in technology, the globalization acceleration and the growing complex market environment. Then enterprises transfer this fierce competition to the employees. Employees have to live a busy life under too much pressure and tension to some degree. This fierce competition creates stress to the employees and it is harmful to employees’ physical and mental health. If we see from organizational perspective, it leads to a series of problems, such as increasing quit rate, decreasing organizational performance, increasing cost for employee selection, training, hiring and keeping. However, enterprises and organizations can not bear or afford these problems for a long time. Under this background, some researchers have focused on and studied some physical and mental problems in the subordinates of the organizations. They find that some items shall have significant effect on subordinates’ general health, such as personality, leadership style, improper leadership behaviors. But most people fail to pay attention to the organizational leaders’ health problems. Certainly, the leaders play a more important role than subordinates. Therefore, the author chooses three items, namely, Chinese personality with traditional features, authoritarian leadership style, toxic emotions caused by improper leadership behaviors as the single variables of this study to explore their influences on supervisors’ general health. In the study, questionnaires are given out based on convenient sampling method. The sampling objects are from administrations of Beijing colleges and universities, government agencies and state-owned enterprises. In total, 404 questionnaires were issued, and 294 ones were recovered. Among 294 questionnaires, 102 ones are from supervisors and 192 ones are from subordinates. The study results show: there is a significant correlation between the supervisors’ traditional Chinese personality, toxic emotions and the supervisors’ general health. Mianzi, harmony are greatly related to the supervisors’ health. The correlation between the authoritarian leadership style and the supervisors’ general health are not reach significant. Based on the results above, the author also finds that when the supervisors have traditional Chinese personality, authoritarian leadership style and toxic emotions at the same time, their general health shall be affected badly.

The theme of this study is to explore the role of identity and the authority of the Master Chief Character, study of the effects of conflict behavior to lead the satisfaction variables for the study of interference. The survey will be using literature review and empirical methods to investigate and conduct survey base on the Armed Force Reserve Command of the Master Chief. To define the factors that influence conflict behavior through the aspect of role of identity, the authoritative character and the variables of different demographic variable and master chief to whom the relationship of conflict behavior. The study can lead management class and related unit to emphasis on conflict management and suitable procedure to settle the conflict. This research study adopts the convenience questionnaire survey method of investigation for Command Master Chief in the Department of armed Force Reserve with a total 360 valid questionnaires. After a factor analysis, we extracted the role of identity into two factors – “the role of identity” and “role of responsibility”; and authoritative character is extracted into three factors - “class order”, “draconian punishment” and “obedience to authority”; and extraction conflict behavior into three factors such as – “program conflicts”, “emotional conflicts”. We also extracted leadership satisfaction into – “relationship satisfaction” and “task satisfaction”. The research results showed as follows: 1.The recognition of the role of Master Chief has some impact on the conflict behavior; and the variable combination of “the role of approval and leadership satisfaction," also showed some of the interference effect in the relationship with conflict behavior. 2.Master Chief’s authoritative character is only part of the impact of conflict behavior. The satisfaction with the leadership of the authority does not interfere in the relationship between the authoritative characters towards the conflict behavior. 3.There is a significant difference result on variables of different population regarding Master Chief in the role of identity, organizational identity, conflict, satisfaction and leadership behavior.

Abstract:
The aim of the Master Thesis is to identify the proportion of authoritarian personality of future social workers. In line with the objective of the work, the research question has been formulated in the following way: On what factors does the proportion of the authoritarian personalities of future social workers depend? Based on the research question the following hypothesis has been determined: Students of the programme Social Work in Public Administration are more authoritarian than the students of the programme Rehabilitation Psychosocial Care of Handicapped Children, Adults and the Seniors. Students of part-time studies are more authoritarian than students of programme Rehabilitation Psychosocial Care of Handicapped Children, Adults and the Seniors. With the increasing age, the proportion of authoritarianism grows. The quantitative research strategy, which was implemented using the questionnaire method through a standardized questionnaire, was selected to achieve the goal. The questioned team consisted of future social workers, namely students of Faculty of Health and Social Sciences in České Budějovice programme Social Work in Public Administration and Rehabilitation Psychosocial Care for Children, Adults and Seniors. Translation of F-scale was taken from the publication of T. W. Adorno. Data analysis were evaluated using descriptive statistics in MS Excel and hypothesis testing was performed in the SPSS statistical program. The research shows that in the first hypothesis statistically significant relationship has been captured in the properties of conventionalisms, authoritarian submission, authoritarian aggression, anti-intraception, power and toughness, destructiveness, projectivity and sexuality. In the second hypothesis, it was tested whether the students studying part-time are more authoritarian than students of full-time studies. A significant relationship was noted in attributes of subordination and authoritarian aggression. In the third hypothesis, it was demonstrated that a statistically significant relationship was detected in the attributes of subordination, authoritarian aggression, and superstition. The outputs of the Master Thesis research can be provided as a feedback for students or social workers. The results could be of interest to the students of the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences at the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice. Authoritarian personality has not yet been processed for social workers.

Abstract:
The Holocaust represented humanities first confrontation with unparalleled destruction and evil unchecked. It continues to impact upon the lives of survivors, their children- the second generation- and generations thereafter. The study aimed to provide the second generation with a voice. Their roles within their respective family systems and the impact of the Holocaust upon them are explored. The theoretical framework is social constructionism. One-on-one in-depth interviews were conducted with three adults whose parent/s are survivors. The manner of analysis was `Hermeneutic.' The participants' narratives took the form of interview transcripts. These were analysed and themed by the researcher. Themes that repeated themselves were elaborated upon and later linked with the available literature. The researcher hopes that the dissertation will contribute to existing research on the multigenerational effects of trauma in relation to familial and individual roles and memory.
