Dutta, Hemonta K., and Pradip Deori. "Anterior encephaloceles in children of Assamese tea workers." Journal of Neurosurgery: Pediatrics 5, no. 1 (January 2010): 80–84. http://dx.doi.org/10.3171/2009.8.peds0912.

Full text
Abstract:
Object Anterior encephaloceles are rare congenital malformations. Most of the cases in the literature are reported from Southeast Asia. In India it is seen more frequently among manual laborers in the tea gardens of Assam. A brief background of the patients, clinical presentation, operative treatment, and outcome are discussed, with a review of the relevant literature. The causes and pathogenesis of anterior encephaloceles are discussed. The authors‘ surgical approach to repair of the defect, postoperative complications, and results are described. Methods Twenty-eight patients (mean age 38 months, range 1 month–12 years) with anterior encephaloceles who presented between 1998 and 2007 are included in the study. Patients were assessed for physical and psychological growth and development; any associated anomalies were noted. A detailed history of the patient‘s family, including the prenatal history, was obtained. Lesions were classified with the help of neuroimaging studies (skull x-ray, CT, ultrasonography, and MR imaging studies) and confirmed at surgery. Results Sixteen patients had nasofrontal, 9 had nasoethmoidal, and 3 had nasoorbital encephaloceles, and 12 patients had associated hydrocephalus. The modes of presentation were nasofrontal swelling, watering from the eyes, CSF leakage, fever, and vomiting. Parents of all the patients were ethnic tea garden workers. The average parental age at the time of marriage was 24 years for men and 18 years for women. Consanguinity was present in 6 patients. Alcohol consumption and tobacco chewing were a common practice in both parents. A total of 42 surgical procedures were done in 16 patients, one of whom died of postoperative meningitis. The mean follow-up duration was 38 months (1–92 months). Conclusions Anterior encephaloceles are rare in Western countries and other states in India, but this defect is more commonly seen among the ethnic tea garden workers in Assam. Transcranial repair is the treatment of choice. Unlike encephaloceles in other locations, anterior encephaloceles have a better clinical outcome after surgery.

Abstract:
Folk literature has come to be identified as one of the priceless resources of an indigenous community. Folk literature is an important carrier of culture, heritage and tradition of a particular cultural or linguistic community. In this context, Assamese „Biyanaam‟ are one type of Folk literature which falls into this mentioned description. The biyanam presented during such ceremonies reflect the socio-cultural life of the Assamese community. This trend showcases the myths, outfits, jewellery, food habits, the cultural ethos etc. This folk songs are called ‘Biyanaam’ (Marriage songs) as they are sung or played only on occasions of marriage ceremony. Rather it is the reflection of collective emotions as well as collective consciousness of Assamese people surfacing as or in the form of oral literature. It transforms and travels along with the changing currents of time. The „biyanaam‟ or “wedding songs” sung in a traditional Assamese wedding ceremony is an integral part of Assamese culture. An Assamese wedding household is practically incomplete without these wedding songs that are sung throughout various ceremonies by the ladies present there.

Abstract:
The essay attempts to explore some possibilities of Comparative Literary History with respect to Assamese literature. Writing a literary history is a complex business, and the tenets underlying its conceptualisation and execution have often been determined by factors other than purely ‘literary’ ones. In the essay, the conceptual dimensions of literary historiography are examined in relation to its recently developed nexus with comparative literature and cultural studies. Within this theoretical framework, the essay briefly touches upon the development of literary historiography within the Indian context in the precolonial, colonial and postcolonial periods, and subsequently moves on to discuss its position vis-a-vis Assamese literature, particularly in the latter’s institutionalisation as a subject for graduate and postgraduate study under Gauhati University, Assam, in the post-Independence period. The essay deals specifically with the efforts of Professor Satyendranath Sarma, prominent academician and literary historian of Assam, towards the academic study of Assamese literary history. It explores the possibilities of comparative literary history in Assamese—one that is not based on a linear narrative of succeeding generations of poets and writers recorded and documented under a progressive model of impact and response, but rather a history of literary reception with many complex and multidimensional narratives often at loggerheads with each other.Key words: Literary Historiography, Comparative Literature, Comparative Cultural Studies, Indian Literature, Assamese Literature, Satyendranath Sarma

Abstract:
Jyotiprasad is one of the leading cultural architects of twentieth century Assam. The life span of Jyotiprasad Agarwala (1903–51) corresponds to a historical phase of transition of Assamese and Indian society to a modern era. This phase was marked both by achievements and setbacks. The freedom movement got enriched during this phase and attained intensity through different experiments and achieved the most desired independence amid the tragedies of partition and communal cleansing. This was also a period when both the Assamese and the rest of India attained the consciousness of modern self-entity in all aspects of art, literature, science and culture. In Assam, too, which was the hinterland of colonialism, the creative and vibrant consciousness of the new age awakened the general masses. Jyotiprasad was a true representative of this age of cultural awakening of the Assamese society. The present article is an attempt to explore the revolutionary cultural philosophy of Jyotiprasad Agarwala and its relevance for social transformation.

Abstract:
Postcolonial India is a complex and paradoxical mix of sociocultural practices and modernity. This tension is especially apparent and holds particular significance, with respect to women’s changing roles. Driving this research is a concern to probe the position of women, pursuing higher education, as daughters/daughter(s)-in-law and wife within the family. The article focuses on the specific case of Assam, located in the northeastern region of India and, within it, a sub-population of young, middle-class Assamese women. The research considers the notions of Pierre Bourdieu’s ‘symbolic violence’ and ‘misrecognition’ as well as feminist literature to examine how unequal gender relations in Assamese society are reproduced and sustained. It draws upon in-depth interviews conducted with a sample of students pursuing higher education in five different educational institutions of Assam. The narrative analysis reveals the conflicting but often-contradictory process of women’s changing roles, particularly of those women who are married and play simultaneously the roles of daughter(s)-in-law and wives. The findings demonstrate that the subtle process of socialisation (and cultural values) that stem from patriarchal power relations are so deeply entrenched within the Assamese society that these highly educated middle-class women continue to be subjected to symbolic power maintained by misrecognition.

Abstract:
Purpose of the study: The purpose of this study is to understand the concept of ethnic Identity projected in the early novels of Assamese literature. This study also investigates a colonial narrative in the text and tries to understand the present scenario highlighting the past. Methodology: It is a descriptive analysis based on qualitative method research. Focusing on the concept of ethnic Identity the research has been done under the discourse of postcolonial literary theory. The data and speculation are drawn from the secondary sources. Any kind of technical software has not been used in carrying out the research. Main Findings: The research brings out to the forefront that even in the colonial period; the native writers seem to be conscious about their own culture and the society. They were aware of the marginal boundary created by hegemonic colonial products. The writers raise the question of constructing ‘self’ and ‘other’ and a developing sense of cultural hierarchy. Applications of this study: This study would help to locate the space of marginalised society in that colonial construction and help the researchers to understand the gap between the early Assamese literatures of the colonial period. Moreover, the study also finds out the awareness of the writers even in the colonial rule about the peripheral boundary and ethnic Identity of a multiethnic/multilingual society. Novelty/Originality of this study: It is certain that Assamese novels have been studied under various theoretical frameworks, but as we are concerned this theme has not been discussed yet for this particular novel. The presentation of the colonial past in the text is the originality of this research.

Abstract:
Through computerized text analysis, the psychology of literature is on the threshold of becoming a dominant force in psychology and the social sciences. The ways people use words in their writing and in everyday life reflect people’s social and psychological states. Whereas most text analysis research has focused on the content of people’s writings, the current paper demonstrates that almost-invisible function words can be psychologically relevant as well. Through the analysis of pronouns, prepositions, and other function words used in literature, several studies demonstrate how authors’ emotional states, aging processes, theories of mind, and the nature of their romantic and collaborative relationships are revealed through their words. The function word approach provides a glimpse of the rapidly expanding methods available to psychologists interested in tracking the social and psychological worlds of authors. With the upcoming release of data sets such as Google Books, the analysis of literature will likely serve as a foundational method used in the fields of psychology, linguistics, history, and other areas of the behavioral and social sciences.

Abstract:
Due to the enormous application, handwritten digit recognition (HDR) has become an extremely important domain in optical character recognition (OCR)-related research. The predominant challenges faced in this domain include different photometric inconsistencies together with computational complexity. In this paper, the authors proposed a language invariant shape-based feature descriptor using the refraction property of light rays. It is to be noted that the proposed approach is novel as an adaptation of refraction property is completely new in this domain. The proposed method is assessed using five datasets of five different languages. Among the five datasets, four are offline (written Devanagari, Bangla, Arabic, and Telugu) and one is online (written in Assamese) handwritten digit datasets. The approach provides admirable outcomes for online digits whereas; it yields satisfactory results for offline handwritten digits. The method gives good result for both online and offline handwritten digits, which proves its robustness. It is also computationally less expensive compared to other state-of-the-art methods including deep learning-based models.

Abstract:
Indira Goswamy popularly known as MamoniRaisomGoswami an icon of Assamese Literature presents the contrasting effects of peace as well as protest in her novel pages stained with blood. It was written in Assamese and later translated by Pradip Acharya in English. Actually Goswamy desired to write a book on Delhi with its pride and pomp. She settled in a small cooped up flat in Sather nagar, Delhi. She came across a few Sikh people who helped her in one way or other. She had learnt various anecdotes about the Moghal and the British rulers. Some were tell- tale stories and some were records of the past. She even visited whores colony to collect sources for her material. Where ever she went she showed courtesy to her fellow human beings and tried to help them in all possible ways. The novel is an out pour of her bitter memories during the anti -Sikh Riots caused by the assassination of Smt. Indira Gandhi when she was the prime minister of India. Neither the politicians nor the administers bothered much about the communal calamities. Negligence of the authorities and heart rendering cry of the suppressed have left a deep scar in her heart. She is unable to accept the cruel reality. She highlights some of the good qualities of the Sikh people such as not accepting money even in their worst condition. Their sincere prayer to forgive the people who caused severe damage to Gurudwara. Madan Bhaisahab’s timely help to the injured are some proofs. She also presented an amazing fact that no one has touched the politician’s house during the agitation. As the author feels these pages of Indian History are stained with blood. It is an eternal stain which could not be washed away.

Abstract:
Bodo literature is a developing literature after the Assamese literature in Assam. Monoranjan Lahary is a popular and prominent writer. In the mentioned topic, it will be criticized concerning some economic earning methods and systems inherently followed by the Bodos, portrayed by Monoranjan Lahary in his novels. He has used different kind of original habits of the Bodos, which are not alike to the contemporary dwellers of Assam. In his novel, he reflects the genuine technique or habits of the Bodo people to earn the money. He uses concrete idea in his novels having used the genuine picture. The readers can enjoy and earn knowledge so much, as they have required from the novel of Lahary, about the Bodos. The works and the habits always influenced to other communities to follow the same. This paper attempts to show the nature of living of the Bodos, that the Bodos do physical hard labor, where there was no impact of modernism. In the discussion, the dialogues and the quotations are given in the same language i.e. Bodo, as used in the novels by the novelist Monoranjan Lahary.

Abstract:
According to the belief system of conventional Indian patriarchal culture, the roles of women are firmly entrenched with the notions of chastity and motherhood. A woman is never considered as a life partner, who shares her life with her male counterpart. Rather, she is looked down as an unpaid servant, or a mere sex object who has to weigh down and take responsibilities for an entire family. She is always commodified as an asset which is transferred from the hands of her father to her husband. She is indebted to look after the children and a full grown male who couldn’t look after himself. Several Indian women authors have incarcerated this double standard of the misogynist, patriarchal Indian society in their works. The predicament of their fellow females who are suffering under this gender biased system has prompted the women authors like Kamala Das, Arundhati Roy, Shashi Deshpande and Kamala Markandeya etc to fight against mainstream patriarchal Indian society. North East Indian women authors have also tried to highlight the predicaments of women through their literary works. Mitra Phukan, an Assamese writer, in her work The Collector’s Life has reflected the attempts made by the lead protagonist Rukmini to attain individuality and freedom from her security bound, disciplined, lonely life. At the fag end of the novel she transforms herself from a dutiful wife to a new woman who bravely stands against the traditional notions of chastity and purity. My paper seeks to analyze the journey of Rukmini from the self proclaimed loneliness to the actualization of her own identity and individuality as a woman.

Abstract:
This paper reviews the literature on the inadequacies of the Library of Congress Classification (LCC) schedules for African literary authors and describes a modified practice that collocates African literature and facilitates patron browsing. Current LCC practice scatters African literature across the multiple European language classifications of former colonial powers. Future strategies could place individual authors more accurately in the context of their country, region, culture, and languages of authorship. The authors renew the call for a formal international effort to revisit the literature schedules and create new classification practices for African literature.

Abstract:
Objectives: The aims of this study were to investigate authorship trends among publications in high-impact, peer-reviewed specialty journals published within the last decade and to assess how publication practices differ among medical specialties. Methods: The National Institutes of Health’s Portfolio Analysis platform, iCite, was queried for PubMed-indexed case reports, review articles, and original research articles published between 2005 and 2017 in 69 high-impact, clinical journals encompassing 23 medical specialties. Overall, 121,397 peer-reviewed publications were evaluated—of which, 45.1% were original research, 28.7% were review articles, and 26.3% were case reports. Multivariable regression was used to evaluate the magnitude of association of publication year on the number of authors per article by specialty and article type. Results: Original research articles have the greatest increase in authorship (0.23 more authors per article per year), as compared with review articles (0.18 authors per article per year) and case reports (0.01 authors per article per year). Twenty-two of the 23 specialties evaluated had increase in authorship in high-impact specialty journals. Specialty growth rates ranged from 0.42 authors/year (Neurology), Psychiatry (0.35 authors/year), General Surgery (0.29 authors/year), Urology (0.27 authors/year), and Pathology (0.27 authors/year). Specialties with a greater percentage of graduates entering academics had more authors per article; surgical specialties and length of residency were not found to be predictive factors. Conclusion: There has been substantial growth in the authorship bylines of contemporary medical literature, much of which cannot be explained by increased complexity or collaboration alone.

Abstract:
Introduction. Congenital pyloric atresia is a rare malformation of the stomach outlet which amounts to about 1% of all atresias in the gastrointestinal tract. The gastric outlet atresia may be either isolated or combined with other abnormalities.Material and methods. There are few publications on the surgical treatment of pyloric atresia with extraluminal and intraluminal endoscopic interventions; however, at present information about it is not enough to assess their effectiveness and safety in young children. In literature, one can also find only few detailed reviews on clinical observations of pyloric atresia; most of which describe anatomical type I. Membranectomy and pyloroplasty are used for surgical treatment of pyloric atresia of type I. Surgery for pyloric atresias of types II and III which includes the resection in atresia zone and the formation of anastomosis between the stomach and duodenum causes complications due to the duodeno-gastric reflux in postoperative period. To prevent these complications, there is a surgical technique which was first described by A. Dessanti, et al. and later was modified and detailed by S. Yokoyama. This article is a literature overview on the topic and authors’ own experience in treating pyloric atresia of type II in 2 patients and of type I in one 1 patient.Conclusion. The choice of surgical approach depends on the anatomical type of pyloric atresia. Currently, there is no any unified approach to the surgical treatment of atresia of types II and III. Membranectomy and gastroduodenoanastomosis seem to be the most appropriate surgical techniques to correct this abnormality what has been confirmed by our preliminary findings.

Abstract:
Only since the 1960s has the Asian Diaspora been studied as a historical movement greatly impacting the United States — affecting not only socio-historical cultural trends and geographic ethnography, but also culturally redefining major areas of Western history and culture. This paper explores the reverse impact of the Asian America Diaspora on Mainland China or the Chinese Motherland. Mainland Chinese writers Ha Jin and Yiyun Li have left China and today teach in major American universities and reside in America. However, the fiction of both authors explores themes and landscapes that remain immersed in Mainland Chinese culture, traditions and environment. Both authors explore the themes of “cultural collisions” between East and West, choosing to write in their adopted English language instead of their mother Putonghua tongue. Central to this paper is the idea that ethnicity and race are socially and historically constructed as well as contested, reclaimed and redefined

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present the evolution in notions from bibliometrics to altmetrics and confront them taking into consideration specific criteria. The objective of this paper is to present the evolution of research, regarding the above fields, the study of metrics and indicators used, and the strength and weaknesses resulting from the current literature. Furthermore, the authors present the manipulation techniques for both fields as their main weakness, as well as further key points, analyzing the alternative options of bibliometrics and altmetrics. Design/methodology/approach First, the authors present the evolution of the literature, concerning the specific field and metrics used, following with a brief description of basic indicators related to the field of bibliometrics (journal impact factor (JIF), eigenfactor, article influence score and h-index) discussing their advantages and disadvantages. In the second part, the authors describe altmetrics and present the differences with bibliometrics. Findings Both bibliometrics and altmetrics remain weak indicators as fraught with disadvantages with manipulation being the greatest of all. Nevertheless, the combination of the two is proposed in order to export safer conclusions on assessing the impact. Regarding the manipulation there is yet not a clean technique to eliminate manipulation. In specific, regarding bibliometrics, the manipulation of indicators refers only to the human factor intervention. The theoretical implication of this study constitutes of collecting the relevant literature regarding scientific indicators. Research limitations/implications We must consider the study of new indicators, which combine metrics and methodologies used in both bibliometrics and altmetrics. The theoretical implication of this study constitutes of collecting the relevant literature regarding scientific indicators. Therefore, researchers are encouraged to test the proposed propositions further. Practical implications The practical contribution, on the other side, provides scholars with the knowledge of how making their work more accessible, increasing their impact. Originality/value The authors add to the originality by providing a framework of the relevant literature for bibliometrics and altmetrics for future researchers. The authors describe altmetrics and present the differences with bibliometrics. The authors conclude the research with the implications of the conducted analysis and the potential directions for future research. Regarding manipulation, the authors provide with the techniques so researchers are aware of the methods in order to protect their academic profile.

Abstract:
Publishing the results of research is the final outcome of a research paper - what has not been published is considered not to have existed. The aim of publishing research is to promote an original idea or to improve existing ideas, with the use of reliable sources. When writing different types of publications (research and professional papers, doctoral theses, books, etc.) it is necessary to state the sources that the ideas or text related to that publication were taken from. Science did not start with the authors of any individual research paper nor will it end with them - whatever the topic of the research is, there is a high probability that someone has already written something about it. If other authors' ideas or text are used in one's research, this must be stated in the text of that research. The standardized method of referring to sources is citing. Sources are cited in three ways: by quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing. Citing sources may be direct and indirect. Sources may be referred to in the text (citing), at the end of the page (footnote), or at the end of the paper (endnote). Different sources may be cited: books, scientific journals, pictures, videos, audio sources, etc. The basic citation unit is a reference. Software for reference management enables the authors of publications to gather and organize references, insert quotes into the text, and create a bibliography. There are many such different programs. Some can be used free of charge (Mendeley, Zotero), while others must be purchased (EndNote). With the development of Internet technology, this type of software is also developing new functions in order to facilitate cooperation and networking amongst researchers, as well as to assist in the development of academic social networks. Accurate citing ensures the integrity of existing scientific knowledge that is being presented, it contributes to the reputation of a scientific journal and strengthens the credibility of the author and the research itself.

Abstract:
The article illustrates the major trends and strategies in employing multilingualism in Hungarian literature, especially that written by authors born and raised in the countries that surround Hungary in areas populated by polylingual groups including Hungarian-language minorities, as well as in texts describing ‘internal’ multilingualism within Hungary. The author explores the tendency of using multilingualism in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries as a method and medium of expression, and provides examples of how authors shift from merely stating the facts of polylingual speech and avoiding foreign language inclusions to keep up with mainstream Hungarian literature, to including foreign words, phrases and whole fragments from other languages into their Hungarian texts, while reflecting on the multi/transcultural environment that Hungarian minorities have inhabited over the last hundred years. The article reviews prose by Hungarian authors, who were either born in Hungary or in neighbouring countries (and who later moved to Hungary). The article features excerpts from works previously not translated into Russian, thus allowing the reader to get a closer look at the versatile and polycentric Hungarian literature created in the environment of the national literature of Central and Eastern Europe.

Abstract:
Abstract This article conceptualizes translation within the theoretical framework of world literature and discusses the role of translators in the multilingual leftist literary journal International Literature. It focuses on the biographies and work of three translators into English: Leonard Mins, Niall Goold-Verschoyle and Anthony Wixley. Living in Moscow in the mid-1930s, they contributed to the international circulation of authors that later became part of the canon of world literature: Georg Lukács, Bertolt Brecht, and Isaac Babel. Exploring these translations within the historical context of Soviet cosmopolitanism, this article aims to uncover the mechanism by which Moscow in this period became a temporary sub-center of world literature.

Abstract:
Even though none of the recent reference works on Holocaust literature mentions the Mexican output on this topic, there exists a substantial tradition of literary works in Mexico that address the Holocaust. This essay offers a survey of this tradition, with a focus on how the authors of these works relate the Holocaust to the Mexican context from which they are writing. I argue that most of the Mexican authors I study treat the Holocaust as part of a shared history, rather than a history towards which they adopt an outsider’s perspective.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to conduct a literature review to provide an overview of surveys focussing on business process management (BPM)/business process orientation (BPO) or on BPM-related topics in order to describe the status quo, uncover trends, classify survey contributions and assess the possible further development of survey research. Design/methodology/approach – In order to achieve the research goals, the authors conduct a literature review. The authors analyze the retrieved literature by means of a developed analysis framework which allows the authors to examine the surveys from the meta-perspective and content-based perspective. Findings – A lot of surveys focussing on BPM/BPO or on BPM-related topics have been published in German- and English-speaking literature over the last years. Nevertheless, the authors find out that while some topics, countries/regions and industries are well explored others were neglected in the past. Moreover, the authors provide first evidence that companies have a different BPM demand. Finally, the authors conclude that although the implications of the incorporated surveys provide a good starting point for practitioners they seem to be too abstract to be helpful for them. Thus, the authors recommend the conduction of qualitative research endeavors to develop adaptable theories for practitioners. Research limitations/implications – This literature review focusses on survey research in BPM. It could be repeated in order to verify the findings and moreover to track progress. However, although the authors followed the steps proposed for a literature review, the selection of relevant articles might be a limitation of this paper. Originality/value – The literature review provides an overview of surveys focussing on BPM/BPO or on BPM-related topics that have been published so far. The developed and strictly applied analysis framework supports a systematic analysis of survey research and could therefore provide a detailed picture of the current state of this research field. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no comparable literature review has been undertaken until now.

Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to analyze the state of the art in Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM), outlining the CCPM literature to date, in an effort to guide future studies.Design/methodology/approachThe paper is based on a bibliometric analysis using Scopus and Web of Science databases. The authors identified the principal journals, articles and authors regarding the research theme, as well as the authors elaborated co-citation and co-occurrence network maps to support the analysis.FindingsThe authors described five co-citation clusters: Fundamentals of Critical Chain, Scheduling, Operations Research, Multi-project and Network, and General Project Management. The most frequently occurring keywords were: “project management,” “critical chain,” “scheduling” and “theory of constraints.” Observing the distribution, the expression “project management” occupied a central position, connecting two other clusters, represented by the keywords “scheduling” and “critical chain.” The authors proposed an evolutive framework for the CCPM state of the art in three stages, according to the most frequent topics identified: Conceptual, Deepening of Applications and Methodological Maturity.Originality/valueThis research adopts a systematic approach based on bibliometric tools, which allows a more rigorous organization of the literature. Co-citation and keyword co-occurrence maps provide evidence of how the main themes in CCPM relate. Besides, the presented historical framework allows new research in CCPM to be directed to the most recent topics of interest that have gaps to be explored.

Abstract:
The present paper is devoted to the overview of the beginnings and development of the genre of science fiction in Latvian literature. Similarly to other popular fiction genres, science fiction in Latvian literature has not been very popular due to social and historical reasons; however, during the course of the 20th century several authors have at least partially approached the genre and created either fully fledged science fiction works or literary works with science fiction elements in them. The paper looks at the first attempts to create science fiction-related works during the beginning of the 20th century; it then provides an insight into three epochs when the genre received comparatively wider attention: 1) the 1930s produced mainly adventure novels with elements of science fiction mirroring the correspondent world tendencies of that time period; 2) the period between the 1960s and 80s saw authors who had the courage to leave the strict platform of Soviet Social Realism, experimenting with a variety of science fiction elements in the postmodern literary context which allowed for a wide metaphoric interpretation. This epoch also saw the emergence of a specific phenomenon – humorous / satiric science fiction which the authors employed in order to offer social criticism of the Soviet lifestyle; 3) the beginning of the 21st century saw the emergence of several science fiction works by a new generation of writers: these works presently comprise the majority of newly published science fiction. The paper outlines the main tendencies of the newest Latvian science fiction such as authors experimenting with a variety of themes, the preference for dystopian future scenarios and humour. The paper offers brief conclusions as to the possible future of Latvian science fiction in context of the current developments in the genre.
