Abstract:
The scientific legacy of Emilia Konstantinovna Bespalova, well-known Russian bibliographer, theorist and historian of bibliography, includes more than 200 works. She laid her own line in theoretical and methodological understanding of bibliography science and activity. “Formation of Bibliographic Thought in Russia (Up to the 60s of the 19th century)” is the last fundamental work of E.K. Bespalova; it describes the philosophical and methodological explication of bibliography as a naturally occurring phenomenon of information nature. There was formed unique method of analysis that considered historical and bibliographic facts in the context of professionalization of bibliographic activity. The analysis of bibliographic phenomena applied by E.K. Bespalova can be generally described as combination of modern theoretical knowledge on bibliography, methodology of system-activity approach and philosophy of historical process. The historical-theoretical method of studying bibliographic activity at different stages of its development allows a modern researcher to see the institutional significance of bibliographic processes as one of the full-fledged components of the global information picture.Analyzing the initial, original object of bibliographic activity — a book, the scientist proves that it was the process of replication and therefore the need to create the secondary structure of a book in a form of title page, which made a book to be the “book”. Through the concept of “book” E.K. Bespalova also traces interaction and sequential connection of three systems — “knowledge”, “book” (“document”) and “bibliographic document”. From the point of view of cognitive potential of the history of bibliography, bibliographical guide is of historical and theoretical interest being the result of activity and the object of desobjectivation in it of the conceptual theoretical-methodological and historical representations of authors, composers and doers of the history of bibliography. As the main differentiation of bibliographic products, Bespalova puts forward the division into timer bibliographic subsystems (reflection of current, retrospective, prospective primary flow) and chorographic subsystems that restrict documentary flows by the territorial and linguistic principle. The historical method by E.K. Bespalova reveals a wide range of theoretical foundations that enrich modern bibliography science.

Abstract:
The article consists of two parts. The first is dedicated to the 500th anniversary of Conrad Gessner (1516-1565), an outstanding Swiss scholar and bibliographer. He entered the history of bibliography and librarianship as a compiler of «Bibliotheca Universalis» published in 1545 at Christopher Froshower’s Printing House in Zurich. «Bibliotheca Universalis» is the first attempt to create an international bibliography of books printed in Greek, Latin and Judish, as well as biographical information about authors and their writings. In total, he described about 15,000 books belonging to almost five thousand authors. Over 12,000 books were systematized according to 21 sections (pandects), which had more than 250 subject-thematic headings. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of the bibliographic language of «Bibliotheca Universalis». The second part of the article contains a description of the jubilee events dedicated to Conrad Hessner. They were the following: 1916 - the 400th anniversary celebration in Chicago; 1965 - meeting in Oxford, and 2016 - program of events in Switzerland.

Abstract:
The Russian State Library has made significant contribution to the development of Russian bibliographic thought, starting from the period of the Great Patriotic War (holding scientific conferences, defending PhD theses on bibliography topics by library employees). The major achievement is the development of problems of recommendatory bibliography: the works by B.A. Smirnova of the 1940s through 1960s, major collective studies conducted in 1967—1989 under supervision of the V.I. Lenin State Library of the USSR on the problems of “Effectiveness of recommendatory bibliography in reading guidance” and “Recommendatory bibliography as means of promoting books and reading guidance”. In 1976—1989, the sector of bibliography theory played the significant role in the development of Russian bibliography (since 1983 — the sector of general problems of theory, methodology and organization of bibliography). The release of the serial collection of scientific works “Voprosy bibliografovedeniya” [Questions of bibliography science] (1976—1990) was of great theoretical and organizing value. In the 1990s, when there were no divisions on bibliography science, a number of monographs and dissertations on bibliographic topics were created by individual Library employees. In the Scientific research department of bibliography, established in 1999, there was organized the bibliography science sector (existed until 2015), where famous bibliographic scholars V.A. Fokeev and B.A. Semenovker worked. Within the framework of the sector, G.L. Levin researched on the problems of the national bibliography of Russia. Studies in bibliography science were also created by the other employees of the Department (S.P. Bavin, A.V. Teplitskaya). In 2001, there were resumed publication of the collection “Voprosy bibliografovedeniya” and the activity of the Dissertation Council, where seven dissertations on bibliographic topics were defended by the RSL employees. At present, both researchers and bibliographers of the Scientific Research Department of Bibliography carry out scientific research in parallel with the compilation activities. The authors of bibliographic publications are also employees of other scientific and library divisions of the Russian State Library. Of great importance is the activity of the Scientific Research Department of Bibliography on the information support of bibliographic science, such as creation of indexes of bibliographic literature and bibliographic production of libraries.

Abstract:
In the year of the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory, the authors consider the activity of the V.I. Lenin State Library of the USSR (GBL) on preparation and release of bibliographic publications during the Great Patriotic War. This topic was covered in the specialized literature briefly and fragmentally (with the exception of work in the field of recommendation bibliography). The aim of the article is to fill in the existing gaps in the study of this area of GBL activity during the war.In the pre-war years, the GBL transformed into one of the leading bibliographic centres of the country — both reference and bibliographing. Both directions were mainly concentrated in the Scientific Bibliographic Department, where at the turn of the 1930s and 1940s preparation of bibliographic publications was structurally distinguished. With the beginning of the war, the GBL reorganized its work in accordance with the conditions and tasks of wartime. The amount of bibliographic work in the first months of the war was significantly reduced. Publishing activities, including the production of bibliographic publications, ceased and resumed in the second half of 1942. Recommendation indexes and lists on actual subjects were the main type of bibliographic materials created and published by the GBL during the war years. The article highlights the activities of two leading bibliographic departments of the GBL during this period: the Scientific Bibliographic Department and the Military Department. There are two areas of activity of the Scientific Bibliographic Department: general and scientific-auxiliary bibliography and recommendation bibliography. During the Great Patriotic War, the library produced mainly reference manuals, as well as also prepared several scientific publications. The authors present employees of both departments who have made the most significant contribution to the preparation of bibliographic publications. In addition, the article notes several bibliographic publications created in other structural divisions.

Abstract:
The authors consider the possibilities of popular (recommendation) online bibliography in promoting young people’s reading. Basing on the analysis of the modern socio-cultural situation characterized by the rapid growth of digital interaction, the article raises the problem of fast and qualitative orientation in the increasing flow of information. The authors conclude that the real tool of information and bibliographic search for everyone can be online electronic bibliographic resources of libraries. There is insufficient information on the use of these resources by modern young people. There was conducted study in 2018 to obtain data on reader preferences and the bibliographic sources to which they mainly refer. Students of the Moscow City Pedagogical University attended it. The sample group consisted of 43 people. The authors assumed that modern young people are focused primarily on obtaining information on the Internet, while they have a need for competent assistance to find and select the right publications. Respondents got the questionnaire compiled of 13 questions. The processing of the survey results consisted of their qualitative and quantitative analysis. In accordance with the set tasks, the study was carried out in the following areas: analysis of sources of information about books and publications used by modern youth, study of inquiries to information resources of libraries, identification of satisfaction with the quality of bibliographic information. The results of the study showed that the respondents prefer to find complete, accessible and up-to-date information about books and publications, as well as the publications themselves, on the Internet. The most valuable and preferred is the bibliographic information provided in electronic form. At the same time, many respondents are not satisfied with their own search for the necessary and high-quality publications both in the libraries and on the Internet. The authors present the possibilities of network resources of popular (recommendation) bibliography as a navigator in fast and efficient search and selection of the necessary publications.

Abstract:
INFORMATION RESOURCES OF THE NATIONAL LIBRARY AS A SOURCE FOR THE STUDY OF THE ELECTRONIC BOOK MARKET IN POLANDThe aim of the article is to present publications and databases based on legal deposit copies sent to the National Library as potential sources for the study of books on electronic media. The authors carry out a critical analysis of, above all, the statistics provided by Ruch Wydawniczy w Liczbach [Polish Publishing in Figures] 2001–2014 as well as inventories making up the national bibliography system, Bibliografia Dokumentów Elektronicznych [Bibliography of Electronic Documents] 2001–2015 and Bibliografia Dokumentów Dźwiękowych [Bibliography of Sound Documents] 2009–2011. The data obtained as a result of the analysis have been confronted with information contained in the basic component of the national bibliography system — Przewodnik Bibliograficzny [Bibliographic Guide]. The analysis has demonstrated that the statistics provided by the National Library’s publications are not useful to the study of the electronic book market owing to the fact that the data overlook the aspect of the medium. The analysis has also shown that the bibliographic information about the current production of e-books and audiobooks is incomplete. Drawing on the results of the analysis, the authors have concluded that the incompleteness of the National Library’s sources stems partly from the methodology used in their compilation and partly from problems with obtaining legal deposit copies from publishers. In addition, other National Library resources — the main catalogue, digital repository or e-ISBN service — do not, in their present form, constitute alternative sources of information about electronic books published in Poland.

The bibliography presents the list of publications by Piotr Flin (1945–2018), an astronomer and exact sciences historian. This study presents a list of two hundred and fifty (including two hundred and forty-three separate) publications of the late Piotr Flin and a list of three doctoral theses he supervised. It is likely that the list of publications presented is not a complete bibliography of the author’s works. Due to the specificity of the study, the co-authored publications are listed in a chronological order, not an alphabetical order of co-authors. In addition, compared to the standard bibliographical style adopted in the journal, the date of publication appears at the end of each bibliographic record in square brackets. Providing the date in this format follows the convention adopted on the SAO / NASA portal Astrophysics Data System and its enriched copy: “The Science Archive Facility” at the European Southern Observatory. In accordance with the conventions adopted in the aforementioned portals, the list of publications also includes two reviews of a co-authored monograph by P. Flin.

Abstract:
This article aimed to investigate the bibliography of the Study of Brazilian Problems (PBS) discipline at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR) between 1971 and 1984. It was used primary and secondary sources, which unveiled the theoretical corpus that supported BPS teaching at UFPR. Some methodological elements of Cultural History were mobilized based on the understanding that individuals and groups grasp the social world and share it in a particular way, producing strategies and practices (political, social and educational) (Chartier 2002). Finally, the analysis revealed that BPS’ teaching programs were based on a bibliographic diversity, marked by books that were aligned with the Doctrine of the National Security and Development (DNSD), but which appeared alongside the works of some anti-regime authors. And that bibliographic focused on national problems denoted adherence to a larger DNSD policy aimed at encouraging the participation of university youth in the national political and economic plan. The mission of the Institute for Hebrew Bibliography (IHB), located at the Jewish and National University Library (JNUL) in Jerusalem from the early 1960s to the present, is to describe all of the books printed in Hebrew characters since the invention of printing to 1960. The ambitious scope of the project was set only after discussions between historians and catalogers. The IHB created two card catalogs, one for bibliographic descriptions, and a second for biographies of Hebrew authors. The release, in 1994, of The Bibliography of the Hebrew Book CD-ROM, followed in 2002 by an Internet-accessible database (updated in 2004), are benchmarks that allow the public to assess the work of the IHB. Technological advances can be used to deliver a clean and easily searchable database only when basic concepts of cataloging/database retrieval have been fully addressed.

This scholarly bibliography is a compendium of the existing geographical studies of the state of New Jersey. It includes seven sections: general works (atlases, books, monographs, articles, dissertations, and theses), cultural and social geography, economic geography, historical geography, physical and environmental geography, political geography, and urban geography. The search for these entries started with an examination of the contents of the available scholarly journals that publish works on geography. Then, lists of references were examined to search for other journals that these authors published works in. Also found were the main atlases, books, texts, and monographs related to some aspect of New Jersey’s geographical studies. These authors were also located as to their work places, and if available their vitae were searched. Additionally, WorldCat was searched for New Jersey geography topics. Each section is organized in a simple alphabetical sequence, by author’s last name. Where there is more than one entry per author, the earliest is listed first, and subsequent entries listed chronologically after the first. In the case of single versus multiple authors, the entries with single authors are recorded first, and multiple entries after these. The dates of entries reach back into the nineteenth century, and continue to the present. Most entries are written in English, but works written in other languages were recorded as found.

Transcarpathian journals of the first half of the XX century are of interest to researchers both as a scientific and periodical heritage as well as an object of bibliographic research. The article deals with the «Svoboda» magazine published in the Transcarpathian terrains, including Uzhgorod in the 1922―1938s. The latter is stored in the holdings of The Vasyl Stefanyk National Scientific Library of Ukraine in Lviv. Based on the combination of logical (analysis, synthesis, generalization) and specific methods (biographical, bibliographic, statistical), the author conducted research on rediscovering little-known ordinary people by retrieving their obituaries in the journal. Subsequently, all issues of the magazine were carefully analyzed. The obituaries were grouped and separated from common prosopography content, names were put alphabetically, and analytical publications published by authors, directly, indirectly or related to research, were established. The rediscovered bio-bibliography material is of great value to researchers and searchers of information about known and forgotten individuals who lived upon the terrains of the Transcarpathia in the 20th century or related directly or indirectly to the territory during the indicated period. The follow-up studies are further research on rediscovering, systematizing and grouping of bio-bibliographic materials in other Transcarpathian journals of the first half of the XX century. Created in 1967, the Bibliothèque nationale de Québec exists to collect, conserve and disseminate the published documentary output of the province, foreign documents about Quebec and works written by authors from Quebec. All forms of document - including maps, music, posters, art reproductions, software and microforms - are collected, by legal deposit, purchase or exchange. As well as the national bibliography, the BnQ publishes a wide range of bibliographic lists and indexes, and various works on the conservation of collections. It allocates ISBNs to Canadian francophone authors, participates in the Canadian CIP programme, and maintains numerous links with other national libraries and international francophone libraries. Recent developments include an integrated bibliographic computer system based on the UTLAS server in Toronto and the software suite Best Seller; the creation of a Web site for promoting and allowing access to its services; and the expansion of the library's physical resources through major building and refurbishment work, allowing significant increases in both conservation and dissemination activities.

Abstract:
Studying the architectural science bibliography has shown that during 150 years of its history few indices have been created, and recent decades almost all architectural bibliography has not gone beyond the framework of the nation-wide index «Chronicles of Book Chamber». This article examines the fundamental nature of bibliographic science for purposes of architectural research. The article objective is determining ways of architectural bibliography development and generating a unified database of architectural knowledge in the context of contemporary socio-economic and socio-cultural realities. It considers defended dissertations on specialty «Architecture»; describes information resources containing in their thesis structure on the subject area. Attention is focused on the distribution of defended dissertations by years, cities and thematic nests. The paper has revealed thesis devoted to the theory and history of foreign architecture. It emphasizes the need of further large-scale research with an analysis of the entire spectrum of human knowledge, which includes dissertations related to architectural science. The authors conclude: 1. There is no complete systematically presented unified catalog of dissertations on architecture, including resources of the Russian Book Chamber. 2. It is necessary to create such resource, which would satisfy the information needs of different groups of users.

Two other articles look at the sixth-century kontakion-poet Romanos, specifically his ‘Lament of the Mother of God’ and his apparent indebtedness to an apocryphal Gospel.

Abstract:
Author-provided keywords as the basis of bibliographical description in the iSybislaw bibliographyA bibliographer primarily relies on the abstract and keywords provided by the author of the original article. However the author-provided abstract and keywords are rarely sufficient. The bibliographer’s task is to ascertain that they correspond to the content of the article itself, as well as to find the closest equivalents in the language of the bibliography, Polish in our case. Additional confounding factors in determining the keywords corresponding most accurately to the submission in question include terminological inconsistencies within the works by certain authors, terminological inconsistencies within each of the languages as well as possible inconsistencies due to different theoretical backgrounds. This article deals with all of these issues on the basis of two pairs of examples. The first is the Polish term frazeologizm ‘idiom, phrase’ and the Croatian term frazem ‘idiom, phrase’. The second pair is the Polish term dialekt ‘dialect’ and the Croatian terms dijalekt/narječje ‘dialect/vernacular’. The complication inherent in the work of the bibliographer is due to, inter alia, the fact that the bibliographer’s strategy in prepairing the bibliographic description should enable the user to achieve the best possible effectiveness and efficiency in his/her search.

Abstract:
The authors have prepared below a bibliography of core holdings for libraries that include materials for teacher education. All the materials listed are held by over 100 libraries nationwide. Several of the titles are, in fact, held by over 400libraries. When the authors originally began to consider developing a core collection of educational materials they were motivated by a desire to target books that would benefit students in the Graduate School of Education (GSE). With the onslaught of reduced book budgets and diminishing staff in libraries and universities, it has become even more imperative to identify methods of helping students that are less labor intensive. Librarians at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) havedeveloped bibliographies of appropriate subject holdings for years, so updating an existing bibliography of educational materials seemed logical.

Abstract:
Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) is a fresh reasoning paradigm for the design of expert systems in domains that may not be appropriate for other reasoning paradigms such as model-based reasoning. As a result of this, and because of its resemblance to human reasoning, CBR has attracted increasing interest both from those experienced in developing expert systems and from novices. Although CBR is a relatively new discipline, there are an increasing number of papers and books being published on the subject. In this context, this bibliographic categorization is an accompanying paper to a review of CBR by the same authors. The objective of this paper is to help researchers quickly identify relevant references.

Abstract:
The article has two aims: firstly, it provides a holistic account of Zygmunt Bauman’s oeuvre, and secondly, it presents an extensive up-to-date and multilingual bibliography of his published writings. The authors discuss Bauman’s prolificacy, as well as the stylistic, formal and substantive heterogeneity of his work. Taking this into account, they reflect on the curious reception of his oeuvre in the wider disciplinary field of sociology. The bibliography attached to the paper provides the most complete account of Bauman’s writings. Building on previous bibliographies, and drawing on archival research in the Janina and Zygmunt Bauman Papers at the University of Leeds, the bibliography spans 63 years from his first publication to his most recent. Many of these papers – both in English and Polish – are presented for the first time in the list of his works.

Literary studies continues to have a penchant for great men. In 2015, for example, 20% of authors listed as subjects in the MLA International Bibliography accounted for just under 60% of all articles or book chapters published that year. Just the top 1% of authors, or 33 in total, accounted for 1,302 works, or 20.8% of the total. Four of these authors were women, and one was not white (W. E. B. Du Bois). Those numbers are even slightly more concentrated than in 1970, when 1% of authors accounted for 15.9% of all articles and book chapters. In that year, only one of the most frequently mentioned authors was a woman (George Eliot), and all were white.

Abstract:
Abstract There are suggestions that King Alfred’s legendary literary renaissance may have been a reaction to the efforts of the neighbouring kingdom of Mercia. According to Asser, Alfred assembled a group of literary scholars from this rival Mercian tradition at his court. But it is not clear what early literary activities these scholars could have been involved in to justify their pre-Alfredian reputation. This article tries to outline the historical and literary evidence for early Mercian text production, and the importance of this ‘other’ early literary corpus. What is our current knowledge of Mercian text production and the political and literary relationship of Mercia with Canterbury? What was the relationship of Alfred’s educational movement with its Mercian forerunner? Why is modern scholarship better informed about Alfred’s movement than any Mercian rival culture? If our current knowledge of this area is insufficient for the writing of a literary history of Mercia, a provisional list of texts and bibliography, published electronically for convenient updating, may prove useful in the meantime.

Abstract:
In order to estimate the current situation of teaching materials available in the field of semiotics, we are providing a comparative overview and a worldwide bibliography of introductions and textbooks on general semiotics published within last 50 years, i.e. since the beginning of institutionalization of semiotics. In this category, we have found over 130 original books in 22 languages. Together with the translations of more than 20 of these titles, our bibliography includes publications in 32 languages. Comparing the authors, their theoretical backgrounds and the general frames of the discipline of semiotics in different decades since the 1960s makes it possible to describe a number of predominant tendencies. In the extensive bibliography thus compiled we also include separate lists for existing lexicons and readers of semiotics as additional material not covered in the main discussion. The publication frequency of new titles is growing, with a certain depression having occurred in the 1980s. A leading role of French, Russian and Italian works is demonstrated.
