Abstract:
A distinctive feature of the biographies of Suetonius is his methodical and detailed description of the physical appearances of the emperors. This feature was adopted by two fourth-century Latin writers, Ammianus Marcellinus and the anonymous author of the Historia Augusta. This study will explore how ancient theories of the relationship between appearance and character intersect with the physical descriptions of emperors the authors provide. These authors reveal themselves to be engaged with contemporary approaches to the question without being bound by any one theory, and thus presuppose a readership for whom physiognomic questions were both interesting and debatable. The approaches of the authors to this minor feature in their work also offer broader insight into their biographical style and purpose.

Morris, Penelope. "Giovanna Zangrandi : a life in fiction." Thesis, University of Oxford, 1996. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:94e6a200-531e-431b-9726-487c981383d0.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis constitutes the first detailed study of the life and works (published and unpublished) of the writer Giovanna Zangrandi (1910-1988). It is a study of the relationship between autobiography, fiction and history in her writing, in the light of recent developments in the criticism of autobiography and of feminist historiography and literary criticism. It aims to place Zangrandi's work in its historical and literary context and pays particular attention to the periods of fascism, the Resistance and neorealism. The thesis considers the nature of autobiography, and the implications of women writing about themselves, and analyses Zangrandi's use of autobiography, highlighting the inevitable intrusion of fiction into such writing. It uses that analysis, along with material including Zangrandi's unpublished diaries and testimonies of people who knew her, to write a biography of Zangrandi and to examine the way that she writes about the fascist period and the Resistance. The question of representing real life in fiction, rather than autobiography, is also discussed, with reference to Zangrandi's first novel and to neorealism. It is shown that, as well as her constant interest in the lives of women, her attitude to history and traditions of the Cadore, the mountainous region in the north of the Veneto, where she lived all her adult life and where nearly all her novels, short stories and autobiography are set, is of considerable importance. Her writing about the Cadore can be seen both as an attempt to write herself into those traditions, and as a means of expressing her commitment to improving society. Moreover, it is argued, her commitment takes the form of both autobiography and fiction as her concern to write about lived experience is balanced by a constant interest in the story-telling tradition of the Cadore and an interpretation of fiction that judges it to be an integral part of everyday life.

Kirton, Teneille. "Racial exploitation and double oppression in selected Bessie Head and Doris Lessing texts." Thesis, University of Fort Hare, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10353/232.

Full text
Abstract:
During the era of discrimination and disparity in Southern Africa, racial inequality silenced many black writers. It was the white authors that dominated the literary environment presenting their biased views on social and political concerns; the black authors standpoints were seen as unimportant and they were deemed inferior to the white authors. Consequently, it was particularly difficult for black writers to voice their experiences of living in a society riddled with oppression, prejudice and unequal opportunities. The purpose of this study is to critically compare selected texts by African authors Doris Lessing and Bessie Head, which depict the political and social struggles within Southern African society during the era of unequal opportunities. Lessing and Head’s works present incidents of life experiences in Southern Africa from two contrasting viewpoints. The selected texts explored are: The Grass is Singing and “The Old Chief Mshlanga” by Doris Lessing, a white author, in contrast and comparison to the texts: A Question of Power and “The Collector of Treasures” by Bessie Head, a coloured author. The research for this thesis is conducted from an ethnic literary perspective with careful consideration to critical race theory and cultural studies. From this perspective, the focus of the study is on the struggles that affected both the victim and perpetrator during the apartheid era as well as on the idea that those in power determined what was deemed acceptable and unacceptable, behaviourally and ideologically. Specifically, the plight experienced by the female characters living in a patriarchal society, and the segregation and racial inequality faced by the characters of colour is explored by analysing these characters’ influences, pressures and societal manipulations and constraints in the texts. Thus, this study will provide a more in-depth understanding of Southern African society during the apartheid era and the strategic use of literature to spotlight the subjugation and disparity.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis is divided into three parts. Part One treats Beni's life and works from his birth in 1553 to 1604. His birth, his ancestry, his early education, his early careers, his Jesuit career and its aftermath are described from documentary evidence. His works of this period, most of which are inextricably connected with his life, are also briefly treated, Part Two narrates the events of the remainder of his life: his writing, his teaching, his publishing, his polemical writing, his relationship with his family, his last illness and death. Part Three provides a more ample critical assessment of his major writings after 1604, grouped according to subject-matter. Chapters are devoted to his criticism of Tasso, to his linguistic writings, to his theory and practice of poetry, history and rhetoric. The conclusion summarizes the pattern of his life and reassesses his importance. The Bibliography is divided into two parts. The first contains Beni's writings in three sections: (a) published works, with a note on the Opera omnia; (b) MS works; (c) a chronological reference list of his (mostly unpublished) letters. Part Two contains all other works consulted, MS and printed.

Abstract:
Abstract This article analyzes the ways in which journalism comics and biography comics create indexicality through intermedial relations. These strategies include media representations of different qualified media types (journalistic report, biography, and autobiography) and of specific media products (such as familiar images of people and places). The article starts with a short history of comics. It then offers a theoretical discussion of intermediality, media representation, and transmediation, with specific focus on the tactics that journalism and biography comics use to represent reality indexically through media representation and transmediation. Furthermore, the authors analyze intermedial relations in the comic albums The Photographer: Into War-Torn Afghanistan with Doctors Without Borders by Emmanuel Guibert, Didier Lefèvre, and Frederic Lemercier; Il mondo di Aisha—Storie di donne dello Yemen by Ugo Bertotti; Maus by Art Spiegelman; To the Heart of the Storm by Will Eisner; Dotter of Her Father’s Eyes by Mary M. Abstract:
Topicality of the study is related to the in-depth study of the art of works of Van Gogh, Velázquez and Repin by relating art to the biography of these authors. The aim of the study is to explore the symbolism and the biography of the painters using the examples of analysis from the works of Van Gogh, Velasquez, and Repin and also to determine the conditions that contribute to the awareness of the process of perception and understanding of paintings. The methodology of this study is figuratively symbolic method used with the purpose to compare the plots of the art and to relate them to the life experience of their creators. Results obtained and the most important conclusions: This is important for the author of a painting to convey his/her thoughts and feelings to the viewer. Still, there remains a problem. The author uses the language of the image and symbol, which the viewer needs to reveal. Psychology of art offers two main options for solving this problem. The essence of the first option which is the ability of the painter to direct the viewer's sight. It is called the Dutch approach. The second approach to the analyses of art is called the Italian approach. In this case this is important to understand the symbolism and knowledge gained historically by relating one’s art works to the biography of the painter. The authors of this article focus on the second approach by illustrating it with examples of analysis from the works of Van Gogh, Velázquez, and Repin. The results of this study might be of interest for those who are interested in arts and psychology.

Abstract:
The Romanian Language Dictionary is a centralized text repository which contains detailed biographies of all Romanian authors and can be used to perform various subsequent analyses. The aim of this paper is to introduce a novel method to recommend authors based on their biography from the Romanian Language Dictionary. Starting from multiple PDF input files made available by the "G. C?linescu" Institute of Literary History and Theory, we extracted relevant information on Romanian authors which was indexed into Elasticsearch, a non-relational database optimized for full-text indexing and search. The relevant information considers author's full name, their pseudonym (if any), year of birth and of death (if applicable), brief description (including studies, cities they lived in, important people they met, brief history), writings, critical references of others, etc. The indexed information is easily accessible through a RESTful API and provides a powerful starting point which may contribute to future Romanian cultural findings. Based on this consistent database, our aim is to create an interactive map showing all Romanian literature contributors, enabling the identification of similarities and differences between them based on specific features (e.g., similar writing styles, time periods, or similar text descriptions in terms of semantic models). In order to have a clearer image on how authors relate one to another, we employed the k-Means and agglomerative clustering algorithms from the Scikit-learn machine learning library. The results depict the distribution of Romanian authors throughout history and enable the identification of correlations between them based on the emerging clusters. This paper is a proof of concept that makes use of only the first volume of the Romanian Language Dictionary and represents the first step for follow-up analyses performed using the indexed dictionary.

Abstract:
The present work aims to address the role that psychology plays within literary works starting from a "critical" reading aimed at understanding and recognizing the psychological and in some works also psychopathological traits present within the texts. Our goal will be to present the conscious and unconscious aspects of the various characters and identify the reasons that prompted the author to create and analyze certain psychological issues and certain environmental situations. The methodology that will be used will mainly be that indicated by Professor Antonio Fusco which aims and which tends to enhance the contribution of the Author's conscious Ego, of the emotional centers and of the unconscious contents of the mind following in part the line of the psychiatrist Silvano Arieti who in one of his main works illustrates the concept of tertiary thinking and sees it as a synthesis of unconscious, endoceptual and conceptual elements [1]. The aspects that will allow you to better understand the facets of a literary work will be reading, knowledge of the author's biography and identifying with the characteristic features of the characters. On the relationship between mind, art, literature and psychoanalysis over time we have had numerous contributions from not only Sigmund Freud, Carl Gustav Jung, but also many other authors. Just think of the various writers who have dealt with very important psychological and psychoanalytic themes through their novels; in the present work we will limit our attention to a psychological investigation of the work Zeno's conscience by Italo Svevo. Through the analysis of the characters and their inner life, it will be our task to be able to make the reader identify completely with the life described by the authors of the literary works. In this perspective, the psychologist will try to work alongside the traditional literary critic with the sole propose of providing a further humble investigative contribution. In conclusion, it can be said that the thread that binds psychology to many literary works is very thin.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to provide as detailed as possible the biography of Hungarian princess Elisabeth, who has for some time Serbian queen and wife of King Milutin. Firstly, her origin will be discussed in more details, as well as her early life. Furthermore, particular stress will be on her marriages, firstly with King Milutin. Determining the date of that marriage and the children who had born in that marriage are not completely solved in the historiography, but there are indeed some interesting details which are worth concerning. Her alleged second (or for some scholars her first) marriage to Zaviš of Falkenstein (d. in 1290) will also be a special topic of the paper, since this topic is maybe not so well discussed. Finally, the authors will tend to describe one of the most interesting parts dedicated to Elizabeth’s veneration as blessed in the Roman Catholic Church.

Abstract:
The subject of the study is the cooperation of S. Efremov with Western Ukrainian periodicals as a page in the history of Ukrainian journalism which covers the relationship of journalists and scientists of Eastern and Western Ukraine at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries. Research methods (biographical, historical, comparative, axiological, statistical, discursive) develop the comprehensive disclosure of the article. As a result of scientific research, the origins of Ukrainocentrism in the personality of S. Efremov were clarified; his person as a public figure, journalist, publisher, literary critic is multifaceted; taking into account the specifics of the memoir genre and with the involvement of the historical context, the turning points in the destiny of the author of memoirs are interpreted, revealing cooperation with Western Ukrainian magazines and newspapers. The publications ‘Zoria’, ‘Narod’, ‘Pravda’, ‘Bukovyna’, ‘Dzvinok’, are secretly got into sub-Russian Ukraine, became for S. Efremov a spiritual basis in understanding the specifics of the national (Ukrainian) mass media, ideas of education in culture of Ukraine at the end of XIX century, its territorial integrity, and state independence. Memoirs of S. Efremov on cooperation with the iconic Galician journals ‘Notes of the Scientific Society after the name Shevchenko’ and ‘Literary-Scientific Bulletin’, testify to an important stage in the formation of the author’s worldview, the expansion of the genre boundaries of his journalism, active development as a literary critic. S. Yefremov collaborated most fruitfully and for a long time with the Literary-Scientific Bulletin, and he was impressed by the democratic position of this publication. The author’s comments reveal a long-running controversy over the publication of a review of the new edition of Kobzar and thematically related discussions around his other literary criticism, in which the talent of the demanding critic was forged. S. Efremov steadfastly defended the main principles of literary criticism: objectivity and freedom of author’s thought. The names of the allies of the Ukrainian idea L. Skochkovskyi, O. Lototskyi, O. Konyskyi, P. Zhytskyi, M. Hrushevskyi in S. Efremov’s memoirs unfold in multifaceted portrait descriptions and function as historical and cultural facts that document the pages of the author’s biography, record his activities in space and time. The results of the study give grounds to characterize S. Efremov as the first professional Ukrainian-speaking journalist.
