The years following World War Two produced a strong resurgence of U.S. intervention in Central America and the Caribbean couched in Cold War terms. Although the U.S. intervention in Guatemala to overthrow the government of Jacobo Arbenz in 1954 has generally been seen as the first case of Cold War covert anti-Communist intervention in Latin America, several scholars have raised questions about U.S. involvement in a 1948 Costa Rican civil war in which Communism played a critical role. One of the main strategies to preserve biodiversity has been the creation of protected areas, and some authors argue that such action will also have economic benefits for the human communities involved. As an estimator of poverty in the districts, the Costa Rican index of social development (ISD) was used. For the whole country, districts wi

This essay applies a vegan ecofeminist queer ecological methodology to a comparative reading of two novels by Costa Rican authors, Limón Reggae (2007) by Anacristina Rossi, and Calypso (1996) by Tatiana Lobo. This approach focuses on the exercise of highlighting the nonhuman, which is urgent in a planetary context that demands that literary criticism explicitly address the numerous interconnections between literature and “nature”. In the novels, the province of Limón exuberantly exceeds the obsolete category of “setting” and becomes key in de-centering the human and queering the diverse and de

Abstract:
The essay provides a chronology for the development of children’s literature in Costa Rica. In addition, it argues that this body of texts subtly resists the popular notion of Costa Rican identity as a homogeneous population of simple white farmers descended from European colonists by including characters of indigenous and African descent. Costa Rican children’s literature has flourished over the last half century and continues to broaden the spectrum of inclusion in the national self-image by confronting gender issues, sexist stereotypes, ableist expectations, and colonial paradigms. Authors of Caribbean ancestry living on the Atlantic Coast, such as Quince Duncan, have made significant contributions to its literary history.

Abstract:
This chapter posits that the 1970s in Costa Rica was a period of sociological revolution whereby dominant ideas of national identity began to be openly challenged. It analyses the protest literature of this period written by three key authors: Quince Duncan, Carmen Naranjo, and Alfonso Chase. Firstly considering Duncan’s Los cuatro espejos, it explores this novel as an example of the harmful practices of stereotyping and the internalisation of norms. It then considers the feminist subtext of Naranjo’s short stories ‘Simbiosis del encuentro’ and ‘A los payasos todos los quieren’, before moving on to analyse homosexual codes apparent in Chase’s short stories ‘La lluvia. El Silencio. La Música’.

Abstract The superfamily Vespoidea is almost certainly a mono phyletic clade which is the sister group of the Apoidea (Brothers, 1975; Brothers & Carpenter, 1993). Unlike the Chrysidoidea and the Apoidea, however, the Vespoidea does not appear to possess any unique synapomorphies, mainly being characterized by the reduced prepectus. It comprises ten extant mono phyletic families (Fig. 14.01). The most recent and comprehensive study of the phylogeny of the families (and some subfamilies) of Vespoidea is that of Brothers and Carpenter (1993) who re-evaluated the work of Brothers (19 75) and subsequent authors. The phylogeny shown in Fig. 14.01 represents our present best estimate of their relationships.

Abstract:
Abstract The authors of this chapter divide workers into six work status groups: formal self-employed, upper-tier informal self-employed, lower-tier informal self-employed, formal wage-employed, upper-tier informal wage-employed, and lower-tier informal wage-employed. In both Costa Rica and Nicaragua earnings are highest for formal work, next for upper-tier informal, and last for lower-tier informal. Mobility out of lower-tier informal is higher than out of all other work status groups, and most transitions are into a higher-wage work status. This suggests that lower-tier informal work in Costa Rica and Nicaragua is not a ‘dead end’ and that there is scope to promote transitions to higher work status groups. Transitions from all types of informality into formality are more common in Costa Rica than in Nicaragua, partly due to the larger proportion of formal workers within Costa Rica. Regressions of transitions on worker characteristics suggest that policies of providing vocational training and formal education to informal workers can promote transitions into better-paying work status groups.
