Abstract:
Scientists studying personal identifiers in French scientific discourse incorporate the personal indefinite pronoun “on” into the paradigm. The semantics of the pronoun depends on the genre of scientific discourse. The pronoun “on” can acquire four meanings denoting or including the author. The current paper, based on two databases of native French and Lithuanian authors’ articles, aims at comparing the tendencies of the pronoun “on” usage and its functions in scientific discourse. The analyses has shown that the Lithuanian authors use the personal pronoun almost twice less frequently to mark an author or authors’ denotative or inclusive meaning. In the articles of Lithuanian authors, the pronoun “on” performs fewer pragmatic functions than in scientific discourse of French authors.

AbstractThis paper examines the appropriation of French sociologists by US sociologists over the last four decades. Taking cues from scientometrics and from developments in the sociology of reception, it proposes a blueprint for the study of reception in times of mass digital data. Through this approach, the paper reveals two salient traits. First, out of the 200 authors of the sample, a small minority received considerable attention, while the others are virtually invisible. Second, when cited in the US, French authors are mobilized almost only as social theorists. The article then accounts for this peculiar reception by considering three levels: the intellectual structures of both fields, the local logics at play in the receiving field, and the “multiple lives” of a cited author.

Abstract:
France’s mass media attract the attention of researchers due to their traditionally significant place in the Western and world media space. France’s modern media system embraces the time lapse from 1946 till present. In this article we study the transformation of the French mass media in the context of the digital revolution of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the transition from the étatisme of the IV Republic (1946–1958) and the presidency of Ch. de Gaulle (1959–1969) to the liberalization of the French media sphere in the second half of the 1980s and in subsequent decades. French mass media materials and statistical data from French official online resources of the first two decades of the 21st century made up the empirical base of this research. The authors try to trace the transformation of the French media system in the current conditions of the strengthening of the digital oligopoly of American media corporations, as well as financialization, capital concentration and monopolization in the French media. The authors study the transformation of the French legislation on mass media from the post-war decades to the present. The emergence of many new channels of information thanks to large social networks, the ultra-mediatization of French society in the beginning of the 21st century became a reason for discussion in the French media community, and also gave impetus to the authors of this article to study the process of the strengthening of media giants in the French media space at the present stage. The authors touch upon the issue of the political sympathies of France’s main media monopolies during the 2022 presidential elections. The authors conclude that for more than seven decades of the 20th — 21st centuries France’s media system has significantly transformed, going from the étatist media system of the post-war decades to the digital oligopoly of the current decade of the 21st century.

Abstract:
Following the critical acclaim of Sino-French literature in recent years, an increasing number of Chinese presses have solicited translations of prize-winning novels written in French by authors of Chinese descent. Yet as the work of authors like François Cheng, Shan Sa, Ya Ding and Dai Sijie travels from French into Chinese, it also undergoes a transformation via the politics of translation and publication in China. This essay exposes the inner workings of translation between French and Chinese, as well as the politics that colour its publication and reception between France and China. The act of translating these works back into their authors’ native tongue signals a return to the national paradigms the writers initially sought to evade by writing in French. Translation here functions as a form of aggression, a forced return home that ultimately breaks with the poetic ethos that animates the original creative works.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the question of how and why the images of the British in French literary works of the Hundred Years War period received their reflection. The Hundred Years War became a catalyst for the formation of the French nation and national identity. French authors, whose works are analyzed, belonged to different age and social groups, had different educational levels, and the time of their work covers the period from the end of the XIV century until the first half of the XV century. It is such a rather long period that allows us to see the dynamics in the development of the national identity of the French authors. The sense of homeland, which each had their own (Champagne, Normandy), they intertwined with the awareness of themselves subjects of the French king. In this sense, we can talk about the transfer of patriotic feelings in relation to a particular territory to France within the French kingdom as a whole. The image of the British as conquerors ravaging the French lands, in the views of some of the authors, however, does not mix with a respectful attitude to English culture.

Abstract:
Purpose of the Study: This article aims to analyze and describe the food discourse and terms of the French language, as well as to determine correlations with the French national and cultural worldview. The study also considers the current state of "gastronomical discourse" based on the French food semiotic and communicative model.
 Methodology: The authors of the article used the method of linguistic and semiotic modeling and heuristic interpretation developed by A.P. Sedykh. The authors also utilized tools of corpus linguistics and computer lexicography (National Corpus of the Russian language; a parallel corpus of the French language, n.d.), methods of a sociolinguistic survey and linguistic review. 
 Main Findings: The authors of the article considered and presented the linguistic and culturological features of the French food terms. They determined certain correlations between the national conceptual sphere and the art of cooking. The authors revealed certain similarities between the French ethnos and the culture of food consumption. It is shown that the French communication, modal constructions and nomination methods have ethnocultural features reflecting autochthonous preferences in terms of logic, semantics and strategies for achieving the goals of gastronomical communication.
 Applications of this study: The application of research results. The study results can be useful for teaching French and intercultural communication in secondary schools and institutions of higher education, as well as for preparing university lectures and seminars on stylistics, lexicology and theoretical problems of studying a linguistic identity.
 Novelty/Originality of this study: The scientific novelty of the study lies in innovative elements of the linguistic and semiotic approach to gluttony and prescription nominations in their correlation with the mental characteristics of the French linguacultural.

Abstract:
This paper reports on the French Digital Kitchen, a design-based project which drew on digital sensor technology to take the principles of Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) out of the classroom and into the real-world environment of a kitchen. The project aimed to produce a situated language learning environment where learners could learn aspects of French language and cuisine whilst performing a real-world task. The article describes the blend of TBLT, human-computer interaction (HCI) and user-centred design (UCD) principles the authors adopted in constructing and trialling the kitchen, using multiple data sources. An example of a task cycle is then presented to illustrate (by using CA analysis of transcripts) how learners have used the resources of the kitchen to accomplish the task. The authors’ findings show how the integration of the pedagogical and technological design enabled learners to notice and manipulate new vocabulary items.

Based on our study of the Tombeaux of Marguerite de Navarre (1551), Hugues Salel (1554), Joachim Du Bellay (1560), Remy Belleau (1577), Pierre de Ronsard (1586), de Jean Passerat (1606) and Nicolas Rapin (1610), we identify the main motives that can be found inside and behind the consolatory discourse of the authors participating in this kind of collective work. We attempt to discover what perception of post mortem destiny is proposed to a man of letters by people exercising the same profession or at least aspiring to become recognized members of the guild.

Abstract:
The final decade of the twentieth century in France saw the emergence of a “new generation” of women writers who offered imaginative renegotiations of corporeal representation. Amongst these newly-created textual bodies, monstrous characters came to populate female-authored stories and presented multiple challenges, disturbing readers and social conventions of physical propriety. In this study, the challenge lies particularly in demonstrating how selected authors have envisaged monstrosity as a means of interrogating changing models of corporeal identity, especially when the subject is undergoing typical physical/psychological transformations of the human lifecycle. Literary and cultural critics have tended to regard the monster either as an insight into people’s perceptions of their time and social context, or as projections of fears and desires of the human psyche. Whilst most of these readings fail to consider both the social and individual domains where the monstrous intersects, I posit that monstrosity is most productively approached as an evocation of rejection of corporeal and behavioural difference, as it becomes visible to others and to the subject him/herself. I therefore combine a psychoanalytical approach (Julia Kristeva) and theories of power structures within social institutions (Michel Foucault) to decipher the resulting complex response of social and self-rejection of the monstrous subject. Focusing on four post-1990 French women writers – Régine Detambel, Louise L. Lambrichs, Lorette Nobécourt, and Amélie Nothomb – I explore how these authors have represented monstrosity in terms of limits and demands which are socially imposed on subjects and which are registered upon and circumscribe the body. These authors’ dual social and individual approach to the monstrous allows me to re-evaluate multiple contemporary anxieties around physical difference and bodily changes and gives monstrosity a new voice. I unveil how the texts analysed here creatively offer new spaces to re-think bodily difference and open up other possibilities for human subjectivity.

Abstract:
More often than not, in theoretical discussions about translation, there has been a predominance of Western thought (Tymoczko, 2006). This dominance has been reflected principally in the concentration on linguistic aspects of translation, as well as in the importance given to written texts over any other form of expression. This fact has led to skepticism about metaphorical or non-linguistic studies of translation and non-Western approaches to this field. Nevertheless, there is a growing belief in Translation Studies that translation does not always involve a textual or linguistic practice, but that it can also take place within only one language, and even more, without implying any text at all (Bhabha, 1994; Venuti, 1992; Douglas, 1997; Young, 2003). Moving in that same direction, this thesis offers a metaphorical approach to translation that attempts to expand the boundaries of Translation Studies and resist certain previous Western-oriented conceptualizations of translation. Through examination of the works and a body to remember with and Le pavillon des mirors, written by Carmen Rodriguez and Sergio Kokis, respectively, this thesis contends that their fictional characters may be considered as both linguistically and culturally "translated beings" (Rushdie, 1991). Throughout this discussion, the concept of metaphorical translation refers to the never-ending process of transformation and transculturation that Rodriguez and Kokis' fictional characters undergo in their migrant experience. In other words, this thesis examines Rodriguez and Kokis' literary representations of migrants and their experience with translation as a transformation process. The dislocation caused by migration takes the form of social, linguistic, cultural, and psychological disarticulations, which are typified through images and metaphors of translation. These images and metaphors represent the main focus of analysis in this study. Therefore, this thesis brings about a broader idea of translation than the explicit interlingual transference of meaning. Both migration and its subsequent cultural mingling produce complex situations that are discussed in the works analyzed. First, this thesis examines the spatial and temporal related images and metaphors of translation within Rodriguez and Kokis' works. The aim here is to determine how these characters manage to overcome the loss of their place after migration and how this fact affects their roots. Second, in an attempt to evaluate whether the metaphorical translation of Rodriguez and Kokis' characters symbolizes a successful or a failed translation, this thesis considers specific aspects in characters' identity construction throughout the stories. Finally, their discourses are evaluated to discuss the linguistic conflicts stemming from the tension between mother tongue and adoptive language.

Abstract:
During the twentieth century, the former Czechoslovakia was at the forefront of Communist takeover and control. Soviet influence regulated all aspects of life in the country. As a result, many well-known political figures, writers, and artists were forced to flee the country in order to evade imprisonment or death. One of the more notable examples is the writer Milan Kundera, who fled to France in 1975. Once in France, the notion of exile became a prominent theme in his writing as he sought to expose the political situation of his country to the western world--one of the main reasons why he chose to publish his work in French rather than in Czech. This thesis analyzes the themes of language and memory in connection with exile in two of Kundera's novels, Le livre du rire et de l'oubli (1978) and L'Ignorance (2000). We contend that these concepts serve as anchors and tethers, stabilizing forces meant to help exiled characters recreate their identity outside of their homeland. By exploring notions of language and memory in these novels, Kundera demonstrates how the experience of exile affects the human condition during the latter half of the twentieth century.

The article compares the linguistic markers of political correctness in English and French media discourse. In the present study, the authors applied the Cultural Values and Script Questionnaire, together with language measures (bidirectional translation, listening comprehension tasks), to explore the relationship between Polish-French bilinguality and bicultural identity among Polish migrants in France and Belgium and students learning French at a Polish University. We hypothesized that the Francophone acculturative context will lead to (i) integrated bicultural identity, as well as (ii) a balanced bilingual profile. Thirdly, we assumed there is a link between an individual’s bicultural identity and his or her bilinguality. The data partially confirm the two first hypotheses. An unexpected contrast effect revealed that students in Poland identify more strongly with French cultural values than with Polish values.

Because of the Holocaust, World War II is the focal point for capturing spiritual experience in the 20th-century literature. How did the transformation of French spiritual literature from the poet Marie Noël in the 1st half of the century to the novelist Sylvie Germain at its end come about? Using examples from their work, this paper shows both authors’ sources of inspiration and highlights the means of expressing spirituality of a person going through an inner struggle. Although the authors describe a dark night, both of them they have a desire to overcome it, to reconcile with God, with the world and with themselves.

This paper considers the problem of the use of contemporary songs during French lessons. Its relevance lies in the fact that reflecting realities of today’s modern life, songs are a source of linguacultural material. Inspired in their scientific method by the competence approach in teaching foreign languages, the authors set a goal to examine the selection criteria of songs and to propose the basic principles of work with songs. Providing examples, the authors show that the use of these texts entails building and firmly establishing all the necessary foreign language skills: listening, reading, writing, speaking, underlining the universal character of the use of this method and its practical significance in future.

Abstract:
Interactive forms of teaching a foreign language include modern tools for the teacherstudent relationship within the global Internet. The purpose of this work was to identify these forms of communication, as well as to determine the possibilities of interactive forms of cooperation in the framework of learning the French language. The authors give an overview of the historical transformation of interactive means of teaching a foreign language. It is highlighted that interactive forms of language learning continue to improve, including new technologies such as virtual reality and artificial intelligence. These innovations allow learners to practice their language skills in an even more immersive and realistic environment. Nevertheless, the authors conclude that the best way to learn a foreign language is to combine several of these methods to create a personalized learning plan that suits individual learning style and goals in a consistent fashion. As a result, the advantages of interactive learning were identified, and the platforms through which it can be carried out were considered.

Since the semiotic turn in the 1960s and 1970s, discourse analysis provides a lasting importance on the understanding of literature. Regarding the cultural turn of the 1990s, literary studies have become even more affiliated to each other by using concepts and questions in an interdisciplinary way. Travelling concepts in the humanities (Mieke Bal) have a significant impact on numerous writers who incorporate this discourse into their works. Based on some readings of German and French authors, it will be discussed to what extent such metatextual references have a decisive influence on the form and content of literary text production.

Literature in foreign language teaching offers new cultural and linguistic dimensions with the appearance of the Complementary Volume of the CEFR in 2018. The praxeological perspectives of literature at A2 level are illustrated by the approach of different language activities and the development of specific skills according to the National Curriculum for Foreign Languages of the Republic of Moldova. Literary exploration at A2 level aims tasks with titles of works, names of authors, biographical elements, book covers, etc. The final didactic perspective in the language class derives from the point of view of the teacher on the National Curriculum, the manual and his personal approach.

Review question / Objective: Autofluorescence (AF) and Indocyanine Green Fluorescence (ICG) were used for the first time for parathyroid gland (PG) identification in 2011 and 2015, respectively, during thyroidectomy/parathyroidectomy. Authors reported promising results. We aim to understand the efficacy, technical challenges, cost-effectiveness, and impact on postoperative biochemical and clinical outcomes of such new techniques. Eligibility criteria: The language filter was set to allow for publications in English, German, Spanish, and French assessing the use of ICG and/or AF for PG identification. Only titles and abstracts, followed by the full text dating from 2008 to 2020 have been considered in this review. Existing systematic reviews were excluded from the results.

This policy brief delves into France’s strategy for managing Islamist terrorists and radicalized prisoners (2015-2023). The first part spans the evolution of challenges within the French prison system, covering the return of foreign terrorist fighters (FTFs) and responses to terrorist attacks carried out between 2015 and 2018. The second part details key approaches for managing radicalised inmates, encompassing assessment, prison regimes, rehabilitation, monitoring, and post-release reintegration. The last section explains why it was necessary to identify the Salafi-jihadism threat to tailor prison approaches specifically to this ideology. The recommendations underscore the importance of effective communication regarding the necessity to tailor prison regimes to levels of violent radicalisation while upholding human rights. Finally, the policy brief advocates adapting counter-terrorism strategies to address Salafi-Jihadi ideology. The analysis presented in this paper draws upon the professional experience of its author, who in prisons has dedicated six years to working in P/CVE within the French prison system, as well as insights gathered from open-source materials.

This article explores the rationale behind a performance given by the authors at the Unfolding the Process symposium held in Oslo in November 2015. For this occasion, the authors devised a new version of Bach’s Goldberg Variations that builds upon Emmerson’s arrangement of the work for two pianos in 2012. A shortened version of the work (c.30 minutes) was designed that aimed nonetheless to maintain the original work’s sense of structural balance and coherence. This version involved the transposition of a number of variations into different keys to explore the possibility of adding a satisfying tonal structure to our experience of the work, in a context where both performers see potential communicative value in 'playing with' dimensions of original masterworks with a view to giving fresh perspective to the listener experience. The article is written from the alternating perspectives of the authors; one of which is primarily concerned with the rationale and process of devising the arrangement while the other reflects upon the performative aspects and implications arising from it.

Abstract:
For meat and meat products, secondary processes are those that relate to the downstream of the primary chilling of carcasses. Secondary processes include maturation chilling, deboning, portioning, mincing and other operations such as thermal processing (cooking) that create fresh meat, meat preparations and ready-to-eat meat products. This review systematically identified and summarised information relating to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) during the manufacture of secondary processed meatand meat products (SPMMP). Systematic searching of eight literature databases was undertaken and the resultantpapers were appraised for relevance to AMR and SPMMP. Consideration was made that the appraisal scores, undertaken by different reviewers, were consistent. Appraisal reduced the 11,000 initially identified documents to 74, which indicated that literature relating to AMR and SPMMP was not plentiful. A wide range of laboratory methods and breakpoint values (i.e. the concentration of antimicrobial used to assess sensitivity, tolerance or resistance) were used for the isolation of AMR bacteria.The identified papers provided evidence that AMR bacteria could be routinely isolated from SPMMP. There was no evidence that either confirmed or refuted that genetic materials capable of increasing AMR in non-AMR bacteria were present unprotected (i.e. outside of a cell or a capsid) in SPMMP. Statistical analyses were not straightforward because different authors used different laboratory methodologies.However, analyses using antibiotic organised into broadly-related groups indicated that Enterobacteriaceaeresistant to third generation cephalosporins might be an area of upcoming concern in SPMMP. The effective treatment of patients infected with Enterobacteriaceaeresistant to cephalosporins are a known clinical issue. No AMR associations with geography were observed and most of the publications identified tended to be from Europe and the far east.AMR Listeria monocytogenes and lactic acid bacteria could be tolerant to cleaning and disinfection in secondary processing environments. The basis of the tolerance could be genetic (e.g. efflux pumps) or environmental (e.g. biofilm growth). Persistent, plant resident, AMR L. monocytogenes were shown by one study to be the source of final product contamination. 4 AMR genes can be present in bacterial cultures used for the manufacture of fermented SPMMP. Furthermore, there was broad evidence that AMR loci could be transferred during meat fermentation, with refrigeration temperatures curtailing transfer rates. Given the potential for AMR transfer, it may be prudent to advise food business operators (FBOs) to use fermentation starter cultures that are AMR-free or not contained within easily mobilisable genetic elements. Thermal processing was seen to be the only secondary processing stage that served as a critical control point for numbers of AMR bacteria. There were significant linkages between some AMR genes in Salmonella. Quaternary ammonium compound (QAC) resistance genes were associated with copper, tetracycline and sulphonamide resistance by virtue of co-location on the same plasmid. No evidence was found that either supported or refuted that there was any association between AMR genes and genes that encoded an altered stress response or enhanced the survival of AMR bacteria exposed to harmful environmental conditions.
